Scalini Fedeli - Chatham
Scalini Fedeli was opened by chef-owner Michael Cetrulo in 1995 and very quickly became New Jersey's highest rated Italian restaurant. Rated excellent by the New York Times in 1996 and New Jersey's favorite restaurant in Zagat's Survey in 2001 and New Jersey Monthly's best Italian and top 25 overall in 2007. Highlights from the menu include soft egg yolk raviolo with black truffle butter, pignoli crusted salmon with artichoke and mint agnolotti in a light tomato and basil broth and braised short ribs of beef with a cherry pepper and port glaze. Set in an historic building built in 1740, the atmosphere is slightly formal with Tuscan style vaulted ceilings finished with Venetian plaster. Tapestry and antique mirrors adorn the walls.

"Our group of four friends decided to form a gourmet lunch group. I was the first to pick a restaurant, which I chose Scalini Fedeli, and it turned out to be an outstanding choice. We had appetizers, main courses, dessert and coffee. Everything was beyond outstanding. We also brought our wine with us, which is always an added prize. The food, service, ambiance and noise level was excellent. I would highly recommend this restaurant to anyone who loves food."

"We went here for my dad's 70th birthday, so I had high hopes that it would be something special. I was not disappointed. The food was out of this world, and there's a ton of it. I had the bean soup and then veal scallopini, and would order that again and again. In addition to the 5 star service, there were lots of little extras that made the meal memorable - a small plate compliments of the chef to start, sorbet between courses, and a wonderful pastry assortment before your actual dessert. My only complaint is that the decor is a little dated, but that's just splitting hairs. I can't wait to go back!"

"This is a higher end restaurant. My meat was under cooked. (No it was raw) When I told the waiter he did notify mgt. and the problem was corrected. The owner Michael is never there. He has a chef who is more interested in hanging out with his friends than watching the kitchen. On a saturday night we were there for 2hrs and 15 min. He was out talking to tables that he knew for almost 1 hour in total. Maybe if he was in the kitchen my meat would have come out correct the first time. Dishes are very unique. Capellini with pepperoncini. There is nothing for the calorie watcher. Desserts are either chocolate based or lame seasonal creations. Berries with cold zabaglione. Blah. Biscotti served on a plain plate instead of a tower. Lazy waiter."

"Just had a birthday lunch there. The staff was friendly and the service was great -- very attentive but not annoying. Appetizers were nicely prepared and portions were perfect. For entrees, we had different types of fish and scallops. Fish were very nice but the scallops were amazing. The breads were very fresh and of course very good.
You won't regret dinning there. The only small negative is the exterior. It needs a little bit of upgrade.

However, with this visit, we felt Scalini Fedeli has regained its excellence. Interesting offerings. Wonderfully nuanced flavors. "While I am always impressed by the quality of food and service at Scalini Fedeli, this visit certainly lived up to my expectations. For anyone coming here for the first time, make sure you go hungry, as the all inclusive prix fixe is an eating extravaganza. "The food is wonderful. The service, well that is also outstanding if you happen to be a regular. If you happen not to be, you will watch in awe at how some tables are catered to immediately, the chef visits, the owner visits, etc. while you wait for used glasses to be removed, empty wine bottles to be cleared, your check to be delivered. I won't be going back and I'm sure they don't care."

"The food was exquisite. The only things I food I disliked was because I do not like the food itself.not the quality of it. For example I don't like pineapple, so I did not like the pinapple sorbet although it looked excellent. The service was astonishing in that the server seemed to arrive about 5 seconds before you even knew you needed him/her. An simply exceptional restaurant."

"This was our third time at this restaurant, and if anything it is better than ever. Every dish we ordered was A+ when rated by the standards of the finest NYC restaurants, and the service was excellent. But since we were at the Chatham, NJ, restaurant rather than the one in Manhattan, the fixed price menu was $54 rather than $70. On top of that, their policy of allowing free BYO during the week, including Friday night, even though they have a very fine wine list, is incredibly generous. My only criticism of this restaurant is that it doesn't have enough dishes without meat. Even many of the fish dishes are prepared with sausage or other meat. This limits the available dishes for a non-meat eater, but what they do have is outstanding."

"This place is primed for a major overhaul. The menu is SO extensive that it makes your head spin trying to make a decision. We ordered wines by the glass but the waiter took forever to ask if we'd like more. And they didn't bring the bottle out to our table and pour it in a glass (so you can see what the wine is and if it's the one you ordered). The food tasted good, but both my husband and I had severe indigestion all night afterwards."

"Just enjoyed another outstanding dinner at Scalini Fedeli in Chatham, N.J. The meal is a fixed price [$54pp] with extensive choices for each course;all of our selections were delicious. In addition, a palate cleanser [sorbet], a two-tiered platter of mini-cookies is provided with coffee/tea. The ambiance is beautiful and the service is impeccable. The four of us all enjoyed our entire meal, it was a "Top Ten" dining experience."

"This was our first time here. I am a cooking instructor and one of my students recommended this restaurant to me. It was just lovely. It was a price fix, three course meal. Both my husband and I felt it was a very good value for the quality of the food. We did not have any wine as we both tend to be cocktail drinkers. We found the prices of the cocktails to be very reasonable. A martini for $10 and my husband had a Maccallen 12 for $12. We will definately be back. This is our new favorite spot."

"The food is excellent and so is the service. We tend to go mostly at lunch when it is not crowded but having had dinner there too a few times found the experience to be a good one.
Expensive but you get what you pay for...a wonderful meal with a great staff serving you and we have always walked away with a feeling of "that was worth it"."

"this is an old-fashioned fancy restaurant. the food was of good quality and interesting preparation, though plating could be more appealing. This is not a restaurant for healthy eaters, as butter or cream enters into each recipe. the decor is very dated - faux tuscan maybe? the service is also dated. Waiters tell you that small plates served before the appetizers were "automatic" instead of "amuse bouche" or even " complements of the chef" . when i asked for an Italian white wine, the bar tender recommended a California chardonnay with an Italian sounding label. Once again though,, the food was very good."
