Anchor and Hope
From the owners of Town Hall and Salt House comes Anchor & Hope Restaurant, an oyster bar and fish house located at 83 Minna Street. Housed in a renovated, 100 year old brick building, formerly the studio of sculptor Benny Bufano, Anchor & Hope offers the warmth of an Eastern Seaboard fish house with dishes such as warm sea urchin served in the shell, our lobster roll, and petrale sole…and yes, there are dishes for those who fear the sea.

"The pork loin I ordered was one of the best preparations of pork I have ever had...the flavor combinations with the white corn and the spices of the chutney were excellent.
However, this being a restaurant known for their seafood, I was unimpressed with the seafood options we order.

- Ceviche Mixto: Bland and way too much "green tomato gazpacho"...obviously used to cut down on the amount of seafood given
- Baby Octopus and Chorizo Too many white beans and not enough baby octopus and chorizo, also on the bland side
- Mussels: I personally did not have any, but our friend said they were the best he has had

- Scallops: Overcooked, small in size and not many given. Mussels served with this were not good...wouldn't recommend it."

"My brother and I, both out of towners, we told we just had to try this place. After being turned away the night before, we made reservations for the following Sunday night. We couldn't be happier we did. Everything was delicious. From the extensive beer list down to the homemade potatoe chips served with our appetizers. Highly recommended!!"

"I work a block away so it's easy breezy. I recommend to fans coming or going from a game. Each time I've been there my experience is the same ; ) so I have nothing but good to say, except for one thing. A&H's appetizers are overpriced, yet they are yummy and additive and keep me coming back. So they win and I win, but I also loose - ha-ha."

"The food was great but the service was outstanding. Whoever put together the staff should be commended - each and every person we encountered from the time we walked in to the time we left, we received exceptional service. We were the first to arrive just a few minutes before opening time and even when the restaurant filled up, the caliber of service never waivered."

The fresh oysters were wonderful, as were all the appetizers and the entrees. I wish they had a more extensive dessert menu. We brought wine, so I didn't take a look at the wine list. I did notice they don't do hard alcohol, which is too bad. They have a great bar space, it'd be nice to have a cocktail before dinner.
The food is why you go here, and it's completely worth it."

"While the food was very good, the service was extremely slow. Slow to take order, slow water and tea refills, slow to ask us how our food was, slow to bring check and extremely slow to process credit card. We had been done with our food for over 20 minutes before we even got asked if we wanted dessert. And -- it wasn't that busy. It was a Monday lunch.
I'd be willing to try it again, but I'd ask for a different server if I go the same one. Nice enough, but indifferent and SLOW."

"If you love sea food this is the place for you. There are some dishes for the non sea food lovers too. Husband's favourite was the Bollywood mussels and house made fries. His favourite dishe with curry sauce. He hardly spoke the whole time, just ate. Grilled Portuguese sardines. Nicely seasoned had with the mixed green salad with English peas. Service was friendly and attentive. All in all. Love this place. Would recommend reserving if going at weekend, do walk ins. Serve at bar if prefer. As we both love sea food this place is now on our favourite list."

"This was my second time visiting Anchor & Hope and I was again very well satisfied. The food is beautifully and simply prepared. There is a clean and simple presentation of every dish. The menu is a bit sparse, but the four main courses I've tasted on my two visits were consistently tasty and enjoyable. Probably the most sinfully good item on the menu is the bacon wrapped oyster appetizers... they are absolutely delicious!"

"Very friendly staff and knowledgable. Noise level was rather high, made it difficult to talk to each other. As for some security reason the front door had to be kept open which resulted in a constant unpleasant current of cold air. The food itself was very good."

"The food is way overpriced for the quality. I ordered whole crab and was told in advance it was not pre-cracked. I really wanted crab so I ordered anyway. For the price I paid, it would have been nice to have it pre-cracked especially when wearing dressy attire. I can go to the Wharf and order crab to go and it will be pre-cracked for a lot cheaper."

"Took a group there on a Thursday night. Had to leave a credit card # to hold the reservation, plus confirm it again prior. When we got there the place was packed and our table was not ready. We watched as they set the table, and then seated ourselves as the hostess seemed quite busy. The service was insanely slow. The food was good, but we waited so long for each course that we were no longer hungry. The noise level was very high, so you could only talk to the person next to you. I would never go back and would strongly recommend against going with a group."

"I found the menu limited - lots of starches, but no vegetable options. The seafood, other than what was raw, was usually fried, breaded, or covered in a sauce. There should be more fresh seafood, but non-raw options. It was loud and there was no liquor - not good for talking and a date. Basically, it was hard to eat Paleo here."

"Great seafood here, fun casual atmosphere and friendly servers. I like it very much. It can get cold because of the high ceilings of a former warehouse space, so wear warm shoes and some layers! My out of town guests loved the oysters."

"Came here on a recommendation from my sister. It was definitely a great recommendation. All the food we had had such a great flavours twist! Great flavours combinations that were very much unique. Must try the scallops and the dessert! The clam chowder was only ok, the calamari a bit above average and the lobster roll was quite good but the scallops and desserts...AMAZING! The waitress was nice throughout and service was generally good."

"A modern style restaurant in a warehouse setting. Incredible beer offerings. Rather expensive for everything. Limited menu. My dish,(basically fish and chips for $25) was too salty. Everyone else enjoyed their food. Portions were small. Desserts were good. Waiter was the best part. Helpful and entertaining. Felt very hip, but you have to be prepared to part with a lot of money for the experience."

"As soon as we walked in, the woman in the front of the house was warm, funny and quick. The ambiance was energetic for a Thursday night with lots of groups as well as couples.A great place to come after work or for a special meeting place.We ate all the appetizers and split them between the 5 of us in our party. The oysters were superb as well as the mussels. Our waitress was fun and helpful all night. It was a birthday dinner and we had a blast- we would highly recommend this fun spot."

"Always wanted to try this restaurant since I love seafood. I was impressed. Certainly better than most places at Fisherman's Wharf. I had the Lobster roll and it was truly delicious. Will definitely return."

"Service was horrible. Asked waiter for a basic, plain, grilled white fish and he let me order a fish that had the head, skin, tail, etc. I left the fish untouched on my table the entire meal, but the waiter never knew because we never saw him again until after all the plates were already removed. Nobody from the restaurant came to the table and asked why the meal was not eaten. Clearly, the restaurant does not care about customer satisfaction. I will never come back. There are so many good restaurants in SF that you should not waste your time at Anchor and Hope."

"Mussel appetizers were outstanding. Of two fish dishes, crab was excellent; yellowtail was over-cooked and on the dry side. Overall a great restaurant with very personable yet non-intrusive staff. Will try again. Next time, though, I'll try a whole fish to see if the cook it a bit better. Too full for the dessert, though espresso was excellent."

"Service was polite, but seemed to be "lunch rush" (we weren't asked if we had questions, just if we were ready to order, etc). Food was fine, but not amazing. Lobster roll didn't have much of a lobster taste, and was mostly smaller pieces, as opposed to thick, buttery pieces. It's a fine place for a work lunch, but I wouldn't try it for dinner."
