"This was the best meal I have ever had!! The portions were very small, so I would not recommend this restaurant for robust "eaters" but for exquisite dining and remarkable flavors - this was amazing!!!! I began with the lobster appetizer - when it arrived I was a little shocked not to see a lobster-shaped lump - but is had been pounded flat, and presented with a dressing so lovely that every mouthful was a party! Then on to the gnocchi - again, a small portion, but the truffle sauce was a sensation! My main course was cabbge enveloped cod, with a few scallops on the side - Yummy Finally the dessert - The rum-soaked baba with pear was light and delicious. I would go agaon anytime. The price was worth it."

"The black truffle tasting menu with wine pairings was one of the top 5 meals I have ever had. I actually got a little teary over the pasta with taleggio. AMAZING service. I need to start buying lottery tickets so we can afford to live at the restaurant."

"The food is fantastic.

But, it was our 40th anniversary which they continually asked about, and when dessert came no candle, no comped dessert,

more attention was given to a couple next to us who were receiving a gift and their dinner was already paid.

Do not ask if it is a special occasion, if you are not doing something special for it.

When my husband told the girl greeter, she just laughed and said thank you and goodbye, not classy."

"If I had to pick just one word I would pick "stuffy" to describe this restaurant. The service was prompt and polite but not friendly or inviting. The food taste and presentation were excellent but didn't justify the price. This restaurant did not live up to the ratings and reviews we read before booking. After the fact we talked with friends who visited last fall and they expressed the same opinion. I wish we had asked them first!"

"Although we had a delay in being seated and asked to change tables after being seated, they were very accomodating and provided extra drinks and an appetizer for out wait. The wait staff and sommelier were extraordinary. The food, while beautifully presented, was tasty but we did not find it anything special, given our expectations for the prices. We enjoyed the evening but probably would choose another restaurant next time we choose this level of dining."

"We had two course that were absolutely amazing and one course that was just good. When the total tab is over $500 for two people (ordered off the a la carte menu), I expect everything to be amazing. I recommend trying it once, but I do not think I would go back."

"Spiaggio was highly recommended by a local friend. Although the food was great, not terrific, it was grossly overpriced. I've dined at Michelin rated restaurants in Paris that were not as expensive as Spiaggia, which provided far better service and better food. Service was lacklustre to say the least. Didn't feel that the staff was very attentive and more than likely had too many tables."

"Spiaggia was absolutely fantastic. My partner and I now know how it must have felt to eat like royalty (back in royalty's heyday). Our sommolier was extremely knowledgable, formal but quirky/fun, and even gave us the tidbit that the excellent Italian wine we chose heralded from a vineyard on the side of Mt. Etna, and is run by a diehard Bob Dylan music bootlegger. Our meal(for me, notably the basil bread, gnocchi, and gelato/sorbet dessert) was to DIE for. Absolutely stellar -- you pay for the treatment but we were chagrined to trudge back to our little corner of reality. Still dreaming about the gnocchi."

"Spiaggia was a wonderful experience. The service was impeccable, yet not intrusive. The food was incredible. "What a fantastic experience. I'll admit I felt a bit out of my element at this upscale spot, but I had a lovely time just the same. Our waiter was EXTREMELY accommodating, allowing us extra time to look over the expansive menu, and providing excellent recommendations for wine and food pairings. The venison entree was fabulous, along with the mascarpone mousse dessert. Considering the fine reputation of the restaurant, I understand the high prices, but it unfortunately deters me from returning any time soon. Maybe when I get a raise!!"

"Spiaggia is a phenomenal fine dining experience and those that appreciate the art of cuisine, exemplary customer service and attention to detail, will not be disappointed. You can easily spend 2 or 3 hours savoring all the wonderful flavors in the food combminations the head chef has created. This is not a place to go if you are in a rush, on a tight budget, or feel the need to have a plate heaped with food."

"We went to spiaggia after reading about this on a top ten list, I ove italian food so I made reservations online. First of restaurant is nice but certainly does not appear upscale, (vinyl seats, dated decour). Menu is either fixed price tasting($195 p/p) or antipasti first and second course. As expected for this type of restaurant portions are tiny, and call my palate uneducated but flavor was lacking in all aspects, gnochi were bland, meat had basically no seasoning, ohh and the drinks terible bith my mojito and my wife appletini were obviously watered down. Service was good but for a $400 bill extremely dissapointing. Dessert was very good."

"Sunday is a very quiet night, and so we were virtually alone in a large space. The food was delicious but incredibly expensive for what it was, even compared to New York or London. The service was excellent. But someone needs to teach servers how to pronounce things on the menu idiomatically for the price of the menu!"

"What a perfect evening! The waiter was kind enough to steer us in the right direction with our wine choice, the food was impeccable, and when they took too long getting out our entrees they were gracious and comped us generously. Highlights of the evening include a perfectly cooked diver scallop with crispy meat, delicious parmesan mousse on a salumi selection, and a wonderful lamb three ways entrees. The mint gelato tasted like they had picked the mint that morning, and the texture reminded me of Italy. Altogether a can't-miss restaurant."

"No matter how many top of the line restaurants you've been too across your travels be prepared for a menu that does not explain itself. I could have easily started with the legendary cheese trey followed by one of their outstanding pasta dish's followed by cappuccino & the check. Each entree always added one to three things that either weren't necessary or made the dish to rich for my liking. It's nice to say I have now been there; but I can think of 100 Chicago land locations I'd rather gather for a better meal as well as better atmosphere. The place was packed so I'm probably in the minority here but tourists have a way of making at least 2/3rds of the reservations. No fromager on staff on a Saturday night is terrible."

"This place is magical! We had a great table with the most fabulous view of Lake Michigan and Michigan Ave. The food was fantastic from our vantage point. We chose the rabbit as an appertizer and my date could not believe how tender and tasty it was. I had the veal and the flavors were so prominent and pleasing. A very delectible experience!!"

"The ambiance and service at Spiaggia was incredible. All the food was also very good. I withheld one star from the food for the price and portions (too high and too small, respectively). Otherwise, the food was excellent. We had the beef tartare as an appetizer (good, but not great), and the duck and veal tenderloin for the main entrees. The entrees were both SPECTACULAR. If my ratings were based solely on the entrees, this restaurant would have gotten 5 stars overall. But the appetizer and dessert (chocolate caramel torte) were 4/5 stars. They were also very helpful with the menu, and very attentive to our table. Excellent dining experience. I would recommend Spiaggia to couples and adults. Not the best place to have groups/kids."

"Chose this place for a special occaision and were not dissappointed by the food - a very nice prix fixe menu included lots of mushrooms as well as seafood and game. Though the restaurant is known for it's wine list, I was a little shocked by the expense of some of the options. A $45 glass of Barolo? Though we were celebrating, it seems crazy that two people, three drinks each doubled our tab. The service was good, though a bit obtrusive (that may have just been us since we were seated right next to the servers station). For a decent sized space it felt a little cramped..."

"We targeted a romantic evening to relax, take our time, try a new Chicago restaurant, remember the experience and hopefully find our new "favorite spot." Enter Spiaggia. The food is indescribably delicious; the atmosphere exudes romance, the service is intelligent, expeditious and articulate. The wine list is daunting if you're not an expert, but a server's suggestion is all it takes. You'll see small portions (and I'm a big eater), but in defiance of conventional wisdom, you'll leave satiated due in large part to the impressive bread selection and, more importantly, the rich and substantial nature of the courses - think small package, BIG punch. You'll leave fascinated, lighter in the wallet, but truly delighted. We did and will be back."

"The first time I ate at Spiaggia was 2yrs ago. A memorable delicious evening. I told everyone about Spiaggia and even purchased the book. We looked forward with great anticipation to the same experience. Instead left incredibly disappointed. The food was beautifully presented, however not more than 5 bites worth.
I knew that it would be expensive, but the portions seemed to have been cut in half from 2yrs ago. We had a 3 course dinner and left there hungry.
As we walked to our hotel we passed Rosebud, nice friendly service, ordered each a glass of wine and an order of escargot. Had a very nice time there. FYI: If you are looking for a great restaurant for dinner try EVE on Wabash, OUTSTANDING, will not disappoint. Absolutely fabulous!!"

"We wanted something special for our anniversary that we could remember for a very long time. We were told Spiaggia was great for a romantic dinner for two. The food was okay - portions were very small for the price but I wasn't blown away by the menu. Service was very good and the wait staff didn't rush us at all. "The waiter warned that the 1st & 2nd plates would be small, but not that the main plate was also diminutive. I understood why there was always someone offering us more bread and rolls -- to assuage our appetites.

A "carne crude" appetizer, a version of beef tartare, was outstanding -- 3 tablespoons. Risotto with foie gras is a failed dish; darkly sauced rice completely overpowers the poor morsel of liver. The main plate, honey-glazed duck with duck sausage and polenta, was another mish-mosh. A few .45 Cal cylinders of duck breast were tasty but tough; the sausage was too strong to complement anything on the plate. There was enough polenta to fill a teaspoon. The lobster ravioli was "luscious". Great desserts.

"I hesitate to make this comment, but it seems like reservations made with OpenTable result in less desirable tables, particularly with upscale restaurants. Spiaggia was not near capacity on the evening we went, with many full view tables open, yet we were put at a table with a partial view of the Drake and near the kitchen. The service was fine, but not excellent and no where near the echelon of Charlie Trotters and others of that caliber. We also waited at our table nearly 40 minutes for a wine list or ordering."

"Excellent food. The ambiance isn't as sophisticated or nor is the space as well designed as many other high end restaurants, but the room was passable. And the view out the window is pretty. The server tried to upsell us, which I found a bit annoying for a supposedly high end place. I have eaten at many high end restaurants (Alinea, Trotter, Moto, French Laundry, etc.) and would rank this as one or two notches below most of them. Top of the line prices. "Dining at Spiaggia was a longtime dream of ours and we realized it last Sunday. We have enjoyed many meals in some of the finest restaurants in Chicago and in some of the world's major cities. Our meal at Spiaggia might be the best we have experienced. From appetizers to pasta to meat to dessert, the preparations were inspired and delicious. The gnocchi de patate with black truffle may be the most sublime preparation I have ever tasted. We received expert guidance in our wine selections. The service was outstanding. I was touched that my note accompanying my OpenTable reservation had been read and that my special seating request was honored. Yes, this was a "splurge" dinner, but it was worth every cent, and we will return."

"Spiaggia has the best Italian in the city. It is a rare opportunity to be able to endulge in white truffles, let along an entire white truffle tasting menu. The staff was attentive and generous. I also appreciated that the wait staff adapted their style to that of the guests, formal to fun and interactive, many fine dining restaurants do not do that and end up with a rigid feeling. Delicious pasta, guinea hen, cheeses, squash, dessert, everything. We also enjoy the whimsy of a beer pairing instead of just wines."

"Our meal was prepared impeccably and delicious. We were met and seated promptly in a convivial manner. Although we did not sit next to a window, our table was near enough to one. The '80's decor is a little "tired" and our booth seat was a bit stiff and uncomfortable. Our waiter was initially quite gracious but once we placed our order and he learned that we were not going to order bottles of wine (it was just my husband and I) he passed us off to a "sub-waiter" and did not resurface until he brought us the bill! It was a snub that was impossible to miss. I hesitated with the stars as our "sub-waiter" was wonderful. Overall, it was a nice dining experience but not one to which I would return given all the great Chicago dining choices."

"Great service, great food and great service. It is extremely expensive this is only for those people who enjoy this type of dining experience. It is definitely for serious foodies with big wallets."

"Where was the italian food??? I don't care if Oprah and Obama ate here. Clearly overrated. Was extremely disappointed. Prices too high for what you eat here. Knew it was going to be bad when as we were waiting for the maitre'd to seat us, he sat someone who came in after us first."

"Perfection!!! I dined alone, and felt absolutely comfortable at Spiaggia!! The waitstaff was attentive but not overbearing, and had the right amount of interaction!! The gnocchi with ricotta sauce and black truffle accent was sublime!!! The olive oils were amazing, and the olive oil gelatto was outstanding!!! Could not have been better!!"

"Our wait person was tremendously knowledgeable and attentive. Prices are extremely high but we knew that already. We still wanted to go. Bar area a little crowded and nothing special. Bar staff served us immediately. Food presentation was awesome and delicious. This is a cultural experience not just dinner."

"The bar is amazing. Very comfortable, trendy decor, and the drinks were excellent. Moving to our table was a shock. There was no transition from trendy to steakhouse decor.
Our server was rude and did not want to be there. The restaurant was not full by any stretch. The food runners and bussers had great attitudes and made up for what our server lacked. The food itself was excellent, and very fresh. The sides change daily and are cooked to perfection. We will probably go back, but the server really put a damper on the overall experience,"

"We went here for our anniversary, it was a romantic atmoshpere, but a little noisy for us because we were sat right next to the kitchen. The courses were flavorful and exciting, but small in portions, very small. Though the hostess was cold and uninviting the waiting staff was kind and explained everything wonderfully."

"Dining experience was good. Quality and service as expected. All good. It is still hard to justify the price point. There are other wonderful Chicago restaurants with as good and better food at significantly lower price points. Is the room, view and service really worth the premium? Each to their own."

"We go every year when we're in Chicago, and it never fails to satisfy. Every bite is superb. It is expensive, but as a once a year special treat, it is absolutely the best food we have ever had.....and we travel extensively."

"Food was very good. Quality was very good. Portions were on the smallish so don't go there too hungry. Service was somewhat dissapointing. Waiter spoke very softly and was difficult to understand at times. Also apparently he did not understand English well. One of our party ordered risotto WITHOUT foie gras (made it a point to make this special request when ordering). When the risotto arrived there was the foie gras sitting on top. We did not make a big deal of the error but when you are spending $150 per person you expect to get what you ordered especially since we made it so clear when placing the order."
