Restaurateurs Vittorio Assaf and Fabio Granato brought their love for French culture and cuisine to New York City by giving the Big Apple an authentic slice of France when they opened Brasserie Cognac de Monsieur Ballon in April 2008. Located in the theater district and frequented by celebrities, businessmen, locals and tourists, the setting is both exciting and charming. The Brasserie style menu combines French classics with Executive Chef Florian V. Hugo's modern creations. Guests can choose to dine in the outdoor sidewalk café, casual original French bakery, classic main dining room, lively bar/lounge or the private Cognac Room as they enjoy meals complimented by 102 varieties of cognac and a gorgeous wine list including first-growth Bordeaux sold by the glass.
"Enjoyed the crab meat and avocado appetizer at brunch. The chicken terrine appetizer was less successful. Followed with a hamburger that was very good though cooked more toward medium than the medium rare I ordered. The lemon ricotta pancakes got strong reviews. Very good service. Nice cozy French brasserie atmosphere. Seemed good for pre-theater too."

"Enjoyed sitting outdoors on an early Spring Saturday evening and having Broadway more or less to ourselves for a few hours - little vehicular traffic and none of the crazy chaos of Times Square. Food was good, basic, classic Brasserie fare. This spot has become a go-to option for us for Carnegie Hall and City Center events. Will definitely keep going back..."

"This is a wonderful restaurant with great wine-by-the-glass, an excellent chef, and a menu I never get tired of, with surprises all the time. The French wine is reasonably priced and delicious, the fondu is great fun with friends, and the chef makes the best souffle this side of Paris. Go!!"

"The food and the service for a lunch were both very good. However, the tables are situated so closely together that it made it hard to have a conversation with my guest. A bit too crammed."

"Great drinks, wonderful food (those scallops were fabulous), and gracious, friendly service. Waiter had excellent wine suggestions and was extremely helpful with the menu and with helping us choose that amazing dessert (chocolate shell with coconut sorbet) All six of us loved it- 4 of us were entertaining 2 from out of town and we all had a great time."

"Although the food was good, two points of service really made this a poor experience for me. Firstly I ordered a 2006 bottle of red but presented a 2009 vintage which was not brought to my attention by the waiter, who then consulted the wine list before accepting what I had pointed out. Secondly an 'automatic service charge' was applied to my bill. When I queried this (I have only seen this for parties of 6 or more, we were only 2), the waiter firstly made an excuse that the bill was over $150, but then confirmed it was not restaurant policy to apply an automatic service charge put that this is an option on the machine that he had applied himself. I think he assumed we were tourists..."

"Excellent charcuterie. Crispy calamari. Very good frites. Pot-au-feu very good, fork tender, just big enough a portion. Pousse-cafe dessert option just right -- small glass of cognac, two tasty cookies, and a cup of coffee."

"This was my first time at Cognac and I was very pleased. Food was excellent and prepared just the way I requested. Service was excellent. My server was friendly and came to the table several times to ask how everything was. I liked the atmosphere and it was not noisy. I will definitely return and recommend Cognac to friends."

"In my last review I was very critical of the service at lunch, but not this time. Service at lunch was perfect from start to finish. Richard was the server and he was simply outstanding. Food was, as always, excellent, and Cognac is back on my list as one of my favorite restaurants in mid town."

"I went there for a business lunch. I had the french onion soup and the beat salad. I thought the soup was not that flavorful and that the cheese added too much oil to the soup. For a French restaurant I was expecting it to be much better. The salad tasted very good and the only thing that could have made it better is if the lettuce was cut into smaller pieces and difficult to eat. The nuts, cheese and berries in it were great."

"This is my favorite restaurant and my first pitch every time my boyfriend, family or friends and I decide to eat out. Usually the service is impeccable. On Sunday, unfortunately, it was not. My father ordered the fixed price brunch. His bloody mary did not arrive until we asked for it, with his entree. We needed to ask for our bread basket and water. Our waiter, whom I recognize, seemed distracted, though when we pointed out the things we were missing he apologized and quickly brought them over. Towards the end of our meal, the wait staff shift changed. Ryan took over, brought us the check, and sent us off with smiles that may not have been there had his ever polite and friendly service not saved the day."

"The ambiance of this place is terrific, but the food was mediocre and the food choices were quite limited. They really need to revamp their menu, provide more choices, and improve the food quality. We had the chicken dish that tasted like rubber. Even their famed cheese puffs were bland. Was very disappointed with the food, at least what I ordered."

"Open Table gave us an 11AM resvervation but the restaurant closes from 11 to 11:30 to prepare for lunch. Lucky for us we were early. Breakfast was very good as was any lunch or dinner we've had there."

"Utterly disappointing service this time at lunch. Hostess was less than welcoming, and the waiter disappeared for long periods of time, leaving the busboys to answer our questions and, after a plea, to take our coffee order. I have usually had better service at this restaurant, so I will return, but cautiously."

"The service is four stars, except when you have Anthony (the one with glasses), his attitude deserved less the one. Food is very good, halibut must try. Always cooked perfect, and this is fish that can be easy overcooked and dry (what a lot of restaurant do to halibut). Brasserie Cognac has one of the best halibut in town, and I compare it to top four star restaurants."

"Both the he maitre d' and the waiter lied about food prep time saying souffle would take 30 minutes, when it took over an hour. We asked for other food ordered not to wait, but it didn't come until almost souffle did, even after we complained and asked for the other food. Waiter was insolent and rude. Food came cold and cheese souffle was dry. While they apologized, it took far too long to get any response from management to get our food going. However, small discount for 2 was extended to full party of 8. This is totally uncontrolled chaos with no concern for the customer with no ocncern for unacceptable behavior by staff."

"I recently happened upon this restaurant when I was looking to take my 17 year old niece out for a nice dinner that wasnt overly pricey. I found that although the tables are a little tight, the food and service here are terrific. This was my second visit and it was just as good as the first. I noticed that there were a lot of "friends" meeting for drinks, dinner, and after work banter on a Friday evening, so it seems like a good spot for after work fun. I dont work in the area, but definitely would recommend it to anyone who does."
