Welcome to Sushi of Gari! This restaurant is the original restaurant specializing in the wonderful taste of Gari Signature Sushi by Masatoshi GARI Sugio. This restaurant is rather a small establishment, but we offer an amazing Sushi as well as many traditional Japanese dishes. In addition to many very fresh authentic Japanese Sushi, let us surprise you by Gari's originality: some area slightly cooked, or marinated, and served with a variety of home-made sauces or other delicacies which enhance the daily marketfs freshest seafood, many of which are from Japan especially for Sushi of Gari.
"On our third visit to Sushi of Gari, I am starting to lose a bit of enthusiasm for this place. We ordered Tuna of Gari set, which we enjoyed - interesting and creative sushi set. However, the deluxe sushi set as well as the appetizers were lackluster - nothing extraordinary. The restaurant is a bit cramped and I was bumped into (by waitstaff and other customers) multiple times during my meal. I think the Omakase or Tuna of Gari is the way to go at this restaurant."

"It started with a $35 sake, it was all downhill from there. Although the cuisine is creative, it is not worth the +$100 pp for the omakase. Save yourself some money, there are plenty of good sushi's and inventive japanese in nyc to go around. Servers spoke poor english, no ambience whatsoever."

"Pricey, because we ordered the chef's special sushi creations, but worth every penny! I have never tasted better sushi, and neither has my niece who is half Japanese and goes to Japan regularly."

"The Best Sushi in New York. Warm & Friendly Staff that welcomes you into their home. I look forward to my return. The Green Tea here is amazing. The sushi rice is some of the best I have found in the city. You will not be disappointed in anyway by your visit."

"By far the most overpriced restaurant I have ever eaten in. We took the chefs menus which was $100 pp for 12 pieces of sushi each, and they were average at best. There was not enough food and the a la carte selection was limited. Service was poor also. Would strongly advise you avoid this restaurant."

"Omakase is spectacular! We plan on returning to try other specialties from the menu. Go for the food, not the ambiance and don' t be shocked by the price."

"Looks like your neighborhood sushi joint but one of the best places around. Tell them your aversions or allergies and say omakase and et them handle the rest."

"3rd time at Sushi of Gari and always great! Only negative was that they were unable to figure out how to use our visa gift card and we have never had a problem in the past with other restaurants."

"The Omikase is overpriced. Good, but not worth the price tag. And upped the price from high to outrageous with slight tricks that waitress asks you. Would not go back. Not worth it."

"We had an early reservation (5:00pm, when Gari opens for business) on a Saturday night. We walked in 2 or 3 minutes before the hour and were told by the witch of a hostess that "We're not open yet - have a seat." We were made to feel totally unwelcome which is stunning given how much you pay for a meal here. We ordered appetizers, sake and two sushi combos, but instead of the standard explanation of what each piece of sushi on each plate was, the waiter simply put our food in front of us an walked off. Seems he didn't feel like doing his job. In a nutshell, top quality at top prices, but not worth dealing with the awful service and hideous attitude. In the future, yes to delivery, no to dining at Gari."

"The taste of the sushi of the chef selection tasting was absolutely heaven! I have never eaten raw fish that tasted so good. The place is tiny and we were seated in a corner against the wall :/ The waiter was excellent. Very pricey: Be prepared to spend $100+ per person."

"The food is really good, but the locations is really bad. We were warned, and yet the place is so run down, cramped and tiny, we were shocked how bad we were set up. Tables next to us were literally inches away."

"Beware the Omakase. There is no pre fixe -- they charge per piece. We had 6 people and thought it would be 125 per person plus booze. The bill was 1400, did not include service, and they didn't give us anything at all on the house. At Per Se they regale you with treats and sweets at the end. Here you feel like you got hustled."

"I came here because of all the hype and everyone's recommendation. Was seriously disappointed! The sashimi was great but the sushi was a let down. Way too much rice that was over-cooked, it was lumpy, chunky and distasteful. Gari-San has a great concept and the fish is definitely fresh but the true mastery of sushi making is in the rice, and if his team can't get it right then it's not a 5-star sushi restaurant. Totally over-hyped."

"Enjoyed very much the specialty sushis prepared daily by the chef as well as the regular menu rolls. Extremely fresh and great cuts of fish! The waiter and waitress who helped us were very attentive and explained in detail the menu, and alternatives. We will definetely go back. The staff was aware that we went there for a special occasion and made sure we had a memorable evening :-)."

"Outstanding food quality and taste. Omakase was delicious however considering the amount of sushi served, it is extremely overpriced. Chirashi is very recommendable and their blue tuna is amazing. Probably the best I had in NYC."

"The worst service I have ever experienced in my 25 years living in and attending many restaurants in NYC (including this one many times). This was a father son dinner on a Saturday night and was completely ruined by the terrible service. We waited and waited and waited for the food to come. One meal finally came. Then part of the other came 20 minutes after the other with no explanation, care, or concern. I canceled the remaining order and left the restaurant. Amazing!! Take this off your list; it is not good for your own reputation. Or get an explanation how this can happen."
