Nota Bene was named Canada's best new restaurant by Toronto Life & Air Canada's EnRoute magazine and was voted as one of Canada's Top Ten New Restaurants by Where Magazine. Located at 180 Queen Street West, Nota Bene bridges the Toronto business district with funky Queen West; steps away from the Theatre district and the Four Seasons Centre For The Preforming Arts. "Had a great experience at Nota Bene. Was with a group and we ordered a variety of dishes and all were excellent. The salads were fresh and crunchy. I had the rabbit pasta and the noodles were perfectly done. The molten chocolate cake was wonderful. The waiters were very attentive. Only complaint is that when the restaurant filled it did get slightly loud making conversation more difficult. The bill was pricey but felt it was worth it with the fine food and service. Would definitely return."

"I was rather disappointed with my food. The lobster in my lobster salad had absolutely no flavour and the Tuesday Night Special - "Roast Suckling Pig with Raviolo" was rtehr misleading as the pig consisted of about 6 dime sized shavings. Side dishes of frites and onion rings were very good."

"Nota Bene is now my favourite restaurant in Toronto. The food was excellent and the service impeccable. I had 'jamon iberico' to start, and I am glad I had the large dish instead of the small one. Then I had the tuna which was perfectly cooked, and served with a nice bed of tender and tasty beans. Our friends had the sea-bass which was spectacular, and the beef and tuna tartare (2 different dishes) to start. I chose a table on the side and we could easily talk to each other without too much noise. The ratio quality/price of food is excellent, the wine is a bit too expensive ...
Great experience, I strongly recommend and I'll sure come back"

"service was definitely not as finely tuned as it could be. casual is good in my books when it comes to service, but this was a little TOO casual for a fine dining establishment.

i.e. my dinner guest asked for a sharper knife for her steak and was told that she didn't really need it. Also, we wanted to put in our order for starters and then decide on our mains while we had some wine and chatted. We were told by the server that he would only take the order of mains and starters together because they were busy. This place really needs to bump the service up a notch."

"All in all this was a good experience - the service was excellent - very attentive, but in no way overbearing. The only potential knock was the portion sizing - the mains were on the small size. Having said that, the quality of the food was excellent. Would come back again."

"An excellent restaurant. I would not hesitate to recommend this establishment. We were going to the ballet that evening and were dining early. Everything was prompt and paced well. This permitted us the opportunity to relax and enjoy our dining experience prior to our later engagements. The service was notable for its detail and not its intrusiveness and the food left nothing to imagination except that which was produced by the wonderful food itself. It was just the type of evening I had been craving."

"A totally wonderful dining experience, from the opening cocktails to the dessert. The main courses were fabulous - chicken, scallops and osso bucco were what the four of us had. The Asian soup was very, very good - just the right mix of spice and flavor. A definite go-to restaurant in Toronto."

"Nota Bene serves a full menu late at night -- an excellent feature for people who normally eat at a later hour and do not wish to eat prior to attending a play or show. The food and ambiance are excellent. The wine list is extensive, but rather pricey. Initially we were seated in an area that was rather noisy. Without even asking for a change, the waitress anticipated that we would like a more quiet area and inquired about this. She promptly had the hostess find us a table that allowed us to converse more easily. We will go back to this restaurant."

"Absolutely wonderful food!. The ambiance was great.
I was dissapointed with the service from our waiter. All the other wait staff/hostesses were very gracious and attentive, however the waiter himself was mia for a lot of the meal. We found ourselves waiting and waiting and waiting to get a dessert menu, as well as the bill. Once we asked the bus boys we got service right away, the waiter was very unattentive.
Unfortunate, because aside from that everything was fantastic."

"Had Steak tartare. Well-presented and perfect portion. Great with the pickles and chips it came with.
For main course, had plumpy sea scallops with pineapple salsa. Scallops were perfectly cooked.
For dessert, had apple crumble with cream cheese ice cream. The ice cream is still haunting me! Great way to finish a lovely meal!"

"The food was good, but not blow-your-mind. One thing they could work on is serving size/presentation. Our first course seemed lost in greens. My date's salad came in a huge bowl that she struggled to even finish a third of. I ordered a smoked salmon, which was wonderful but served on such a bed of greens that the salmon looked an afterthought. With our mains we ordered a side of onion rings. It came as an overflowign bowl. When they cleared our table 20 minutes later, and after consuming many onion rings, we hadn't even got the bowl down to lip level. The service was attentive and courteous. But we probably had 8 servers stop by our table over the course of our meal. We didn't know who our actual waiter was. Timely, but a bit impersonal."

"Nota Bene was rated as one of the best new restaurants in Toronto just over a year or two ago. This is when I first went, and enjoyed one of the best meals of my life. Since then, I've went twice more, and both times I've walked away very dissapointed. I had the sea bass for the main course, and it was absolutely bland. The skin was completely soggy and the lentil side dish was flavourless. The restaurant was fairly busy, but not full. Despite this, the server rushed us through every course. The quick pace was just frustrating and you felt like you had to chug back your wine to keep up with the pace. This was a very unpleasant dinner out and I felt the $265 price tag should have provided a better quality/experience."

"There were six of us for dinner and we had a round table. It was so noisy you could barely have a conversation with the person beside you. We ended up changing seats between courses so we could at least have a visit with our guests.The food and service were excellent...I would not go back unless there were two of us!"

"Took my girlfriend out on a V-day date. We split an appy, two mains, side of fries, and dessert. The food and service were top-knotch so it was well worth the $145 including tax and tip.

My fave was the dessert. Chef David Lee having grown up in England has mastered the sticky toffee pudding. It was phenomenal!"

"This was my first visit to Nota Bene, and definitely not my last. The service was very friendly and professional. Our waiter was quite knowledgeable on the menu and specials. The sommelier (Otta) was incredibly friendly and quite eager to be of service. His descriptions of the recommended wines (both main course and dessert wines) were spot on! The appetizers (crisp duck salad & Nova Scotia lobster salad) were the perfect size and very fresh tasting. The main courses (9oz Beef Burger & Pulled Braised Beef Short Rib and 8oz Beef Tenderloin) were simply mouth watering!! Desserts were just the right size and very tasty. The only downside: it's a very noisy atmosphere that makes an intimate supper challenging."

"Fabulous food, love the sharing options for sides. Great buzz and ambience, unique for a large space. Attentive service, although there was a feeling they were trying to turn over the tables quickly if they could. "Lots of energy in the place but definitely not the spot to take someone for a romantic one on one - waaayyy too loud!!! The place has changed since I was there a year ago - much less attention to detail - felt like I was being processed at Customs as I walked in to acknowledge my reservation - nothing about the service that made me feel special - could have been at Kelsey's for all I knew. Toronto has much better high end restaurants to spend money at."

"The food and service at Nota Bene was fantastic. We were very impressed by the taste, presentation and portions of all our courses. The clientele was clearly very business-oriented, so the noise level was louder than expected. This also made the atmosphere seem less cozy than some other restaurants. Overall, it was an excellent meal and an excellent night and we would definitely come back again."

"Boudin noir&pulled pork tart brought us back a 2nd time,but our second visit was a disappointment. Ordered the tart once again, but this time there was no tart eventhough that is what it's called. In true cafeteria style: large plop of pulled pork, atop are a few meager slices of boudin noir, then an oversized Yorkshire pudding that was fighting its way to stay on the plate. The tart first time around was thin, flaky, warm, and not at all soaked through-requiring much skill and time. Yorkshire pudding as replacement? Are you joking me? The boeuf-bourguinon should be renamed as paparadelle with stewed beef. "Hard to find the way in.... ! Pleasant reception once inside, but overall rather noisy for a quiet dinner for two: probably better for groups. Duck/Papaya Salad excellent, Tuna Tartare tiny (but also tasteless, so probably just as well). Pork/black pudding dish good, rabbit/pasta tasty, desserts excellent. Service excellent: maybe a tad hasty (we weren't drinking much) .... there was to be no lingering! I guess they're busy on Friday nights. Quite expensive: $190 for two, with only three glasses of wine."

"I went to Nota Bene prior to an opera and took advantage of the pre-theatre prix fixe menu (5 to 6:30 prior to a Four Seasons performance). Three courses for $38 and I found it to be much better experience then all the Winterlicious dinners I have participated in. I started with the Irish salmon and I was underwhelmed. The presentation and taste was good, but I expected more. For the entree I had the beef short ribs and it was exceptional. Fall off the bone tender and the sauce matched it beautifully. It left me wanting more. The panna cotta was a nice finish to the meal. Our server was very very good. She did not rush us, but was attentive and professional. Overall it was a very good experience, but I can see dishes being hit and miss."

"Wonderful. The menu was simple but offered enough choice between chicken, fish and beef. Had the Yucatan Hot and Sour soup for appie and it was perfect, hot and sour flavourful broth with just the right amount of smokiness from the smoked chicken. Cilantro added a freshness, very appealing and light enough for an appie. For the main, I enjoyed the black cod done in an asian soy sauce with rapini and pickled ginger. Absolutely perfect flavour combo. I'm still salivating and want to go back soon! The only downside of this menu is that they have a very expensive wine list... you don't have to order $100 + bottles of wine to get a very good wine to complement the meals. Suggest more wines in the $50-80 price range."

"I found service so-so; asked for a few items (butter to accompany bread), but the server took a while. Some servers are quite busy and other servers less so; if you have a server who has a busy section it can be hard to flag someone down. The food was well-prepared and excellent, as I expect from Chef Lee. Ordered hanger steak and my companion ordered steak tartare; we each enjoyed our mains. Only caveat is the noisy room (bad acoustics? but what can I say, it's a busy and popular restaurant...) and service could have been a little more attentive. Also, if you are sitting by the door, it can be drafty. The restaurant should look into that."

"Although, the food was good, we had extremely high expectations for our first visit to Nota Bene. The food was good, but didn't blow us away. We ordered a side order of onion rings, and they didn't sit well with both of us, shortly after. Overall, Nota Bene did not dissapoint. The martinis were fantastic, and the wine list was excellent. The service was spot on, and better than most. We had theatre tickets and they met our expectations of being out within 1.5 hours. Again, we may be biased of the food because of our experience with the onion rings."

"I had heard great things about Nota Bene, but was disappointed. The decor is terrific - I could look at the mural-size paintings for hours. The menu was surprisingly uninspiring - very little that struck me as particularly novel or interesting. What put me off the most was the service: our server was pestering us constantly, always trying to hurry us along. Even with some resistance on our part, we were out in 90 minutes... so what is Nota Bene aiming for, a 60-minute turnaround??? I can understand that on a Saturday night they don't want people to linger too long, but this was ridiculous."

"Amazing food: great flavours and textures with beautiful presentation. Nice to see delicate food not being over cooked.
Great service.
Side note, the creme caramel is a bit of a let down compared to the rest of the meal.
Quite noisy. Need a reservation as it is packed even during week days. Good for them!"

"We ordered the crispy duck salad and mushroom pasta as starters, and then hangar steak and suckling pig for mains. Everything was delicious, including the sticky toffee pudding we had for dessert. We brought our own wine and the server made excellent recommendations that complimented the wine perfectly. Service is always charming."

"Four of us went for a birthday dinner, first time there. Food was good but not a "wow" as we thought it would be from the reviews it gets. Maybe it's impossible to keep up with the hype. Service was also good but not remarkable. Sommalier/wine steward was by far the best staff member that night, very helpful in choosing a good moderately priced wine from a fairly pricey list. I am leery of sommaliers as marketers of high end wines but he immediately put us at ease. We found the food menu limited in some ways. That said, I would go back, you can't judge on one visit alone. Interested in checking out the bar sometime, it looked inviting."

"We had reservations for 8:30 on New Years Eve. We arrived at 8:25 and our table was ready right on time. The hostess was very courteous and efficient. Our table was Ok as you will notice the restaurant is one large room with tables. Not very private. Our server was cheerful and very helpful. The food was excellent and well prepared. They have a small wine list. Our dinner experience was good and we will return. This restaurant allows you to bring your own wine after 9 pm and they do not charge a corkage fee. This is a definite plus for this restaurant."

"My family of five (two adults and three teenagers) traveled to Toronto from Oregon to celebrate New Year's in this fun city. We made reservations at Nota Bene for New Year's Eve dinner at 7pm. We had done some internet research, and this restuarant was voted one of the top ten in Toronto for 2009. In addition, it was a place where my sons could get some "normal" contemporary cusine that teenagers might actually eat, like steak, short ribs, etc. When we arrived we were immediately seated in a booth as I had requested. The decor was just what my wife and I enjoy.... clean uncluttered contemporary style with wood, leather, metal and colorful art. Food was very good to excellent. Excellent wine selection but expensive. Canadian taxes high!"

"Great service - on New Year's Eve to boot - very prompt with all orders (so not for the loitering diners), with nice wine-pairing suggestions. Loved the crisp duck salad in particular, but the broth/sauce in the tuna and short-rib dishes were too salty. A bit noisy in the very open space, so moderate conversations accordingly. At least the music was nice and low, and not competing with the ambient sound. The art on the walls (white-canvas, bright pink paint blobs) has to go! Yikes!"

"We went to Nota Bene when it first opened and wasn't too happy with our experience - we thought it was overrated. We felt really rushed with our waitress who was hovering and too quick with service. We thought we would give it another try as our friends from out-of-town wanted to try it. We were pleasantly surprised. It was a great experience all around! "The food was good, but not very good. The sea bass we had was delicious, but it sat on some chewy lentils and some bright green spinach (which should have been show-cased)....There should have been more effort for the price. The tuna was so richly rolled in peppercorns that it kept our guest from eating the second half of the steak. The sticky toffee pudding (10) wasn't significantly different than President's Choice stp which costs (2). Our server was excellent. She was pragmatic, down to earth, comfortable...no unctuousness here."

"As a surprise Christmas gift for my spouse, I wanted him to experience a 60-day aged steak. He is a lover of steaks and has eaten alot of steak in his life in pursuit of the "best ever". To-date his search has concluded that his "best-ever" include those he barbecues himself and the steak for two at Peter Lugers' in Brooklyn, New York and now Nota Bene is right behind Peter Lugers. While fully expecting to be presented with a Crocodile Dundee-type knife to cut the steak, he was most impressed at being able to cut his 12 oz. New York Strip with a basic table knife. It was an excellent dinner, a wonderful dining experience and we will definitely return."

"The charcuterie was great, although I would have enjoyed it even more if it had some pate to go with it. The crispy chicken skin was slightly over seasoned, but definitely creative, interesting, and very good! The scallops were excellent - well seasoned, and cooked perfectly. The cod dish was overcooked, but the flavours were great and lentils were a good accompaniment. The only downside to the meal was the location of the table. We were seated at the table right behind the entrance, close to the end of the wall, and experienced a draft throughout the meal. That table should be taken out, considering there are so many other seats in the restaurant."

"The food was excellent - not unlike Splendido in the early days. Service attentive and unobtrusive. Staff very pleasant and no attitude. Very good experience. "While this felt like you were in a restaurant that could easily be not in Toronto, it did not live up to the high ratings. For a relatively expensive restaurant, they are far too focussed on turning the tables over. Moreover, they are not subtle at all wandering around making notes at whether you are having dinner or on dessert. There was little choice of wince by the glass so to run out of one choice was not impressive - plus the alternative choice was not good at all (despite the price) but they would not know that as nobody asked. Will unlikely return."

More interested in saling wine than making great food....Service under pressure

"Habitués de bons restos à Montréal (Pintxo,Pullman,Toqué, Nuance) nous avons choisi le Nota Bene pour cette rare visite à Toronto en apprenant que le Chef avait gagné un concours pan canadien. Nous avons apprécié le décor, le service attentionné sans être trop présent, les plats composés d'aliments très frais, cuits à point, très bien relevée et la présentation était correcte. Le service d'abord très rapide, a ralenti après une erreur du plat principal (ce qui nous convenait parfaitement) mais que la maison a jugé inadmissible en nous compensant au niveau de l'addition ce qui fut très surprenant et apprécié. Le choix de vins au verre gagnerait à être plus élaboré. À conseiller à ceux qui aiment les endroits animés"

"Considering the restaurant was recommended and promoted in Toronto Life as the new hot spot I was quite disappointed. The bar and dining area were packed -no surprise, I suppose, that close to Christmas - but as a consequence the noise levels were extreme. Conversation was difficult.

The food was adequate but not special. The duck salad uninspired and the pasta with scallops was watery and barely warm. Wine list could use a few more selections under $100.
The serving staff were friendly and efficient. Overall however, I did not think I received sufficient value for the dollars spent. I won’t return."

"The service was absolutely terrible. We had a reservation for 8 p.m. but were not seated until 8:30 p.m. We were told our table was still finishing dessert, but I walked around and saw several open tables. Eventually other parties were seated at the open tables, but we had to wait 30 minutes for ours.

We barely got an apology. Then our waiter was worse. He was just simply unhappy. He never smiled and acted as though it was a chore to do his job. We ordered several side items for the table to accompany our dinner. They didn't show up until 5 minutes after our dinner was served.

After dinner, it took 30 minutes for the waiter to offer dessert. It took forever for the bill too. We spent over $400 that night, never again."

"Our dinner was disappointing. I have been to Nota Bene on several occasions and have finally come to the conclusion that it is not great value. The menu lacks inspiration and the prices (particularly for steaks and so-so Ontario wines) are inflated beyond reason. The restaurant is always busy which tells me it needs more competition in the neighbourhood. The best thing going for Nota Bene is the dessert-course cheese plate."

"The best food that we have ever had in a restaurant. Great service. I would pay any money for this experience again. Now we're spoiled, wee feel that we will have a hard time to go to other restaurants. Try the onion rings (and don't think for a second that they are regular onion rings) and brussels sprouts as a side (sublime), and for an appetizer have the tuna tatar (excellent)."

"This was our first experience at Nota Bene. We would go back again. However, I would caution the wait staff not to rush us through.
I still had my before dinner cocktail half gone when the appetizers arrived along with the wine we ordered. We were asked for our dessert choice while still trying to complete drinking our bottle of wine. He finally backed off and let us enjoy a more leisurely pace."

"The table that we were sitting at should not be even available for dinners as it is too close to the kitchen door and the huge traffic ruines the dinning experience. On that evening there was unbearable draft comming from God knows where, I had to go and get my coat. The menu does not have great variety and definately the food served has too many flavous and is over priced. The staff does not do greatest job of explaining the dishes, instead the lingo in deceving. The dining experience was dissappointing despite someone's recommendations. There is no compations, warmth etc, from staff, very cold and unwelcoming, rushed through the dinner. Overall, did not like it and would not recommend to anyone nor would consider comming back. Tks."

"Food was out of the ordinary.....a memorable dining experience.

Salad was expensive but it is not every day you get to sample truffles and fresh artichokes.

The dessert menu had more common items but the house made pistachio ice cream was unusual and delicious.

It was relatively quiet early in the evening. The noise picked up after 7 PM.

At least 5 staff attended our table at various times. The service was efficient and unobtrusive."
