From its inviting corner location at Park and 14th streets in charming downtown Paso Robles, Artisan captures the essence of the Paso Robles wine country on every plate. Showcasing locally grown produce and handcrafted foods, Executive Chef Chris Kobayashi finds much of the inspiration for his dishes through regular trips to the farmer’s market; he combines regional American flavors in new and innovative ways. Artisan’s menu features local and organic produce, and proteins that are wild caught or sustainably farmed with no growth hormones or antibiotics. Chef Kobayashi’s insistence on freshness and quality complements his style which allows each ingredient to shine, but not overwhelm. Designed to complement its contemporary American cuisine, Artisan’s wine list offers a balanced selection of varietals that includes many wines from California regions in small or limited distribution. "Perhaps Father's Day wasn't a good time to visit. And maybe they haven't settled into the new venue. Or perhaps the focus now is on the bar trade?
We wish we'd gone straight to the desserts -- the pudding assortment was spectacular; the chocolate mousse delicious and the coffee flavorful.
The menu seems ambitious and these folks used to be able to carry it off. But this visit... felt like the kitchen was staffed by the JV team and there wasn't any adult supervision. Hot dishes arrived barely warm; battered abalone was soggy; one appetizer seemed a dollop of demi-glace supporting cardboard-consistency piroggi.
This used to be a ** really ** good restaurant and the prices still reflect what used to be.
So sorry."

"I highly recommend this restaurant. The food is outstanding and the service is great. I'd been there in December and wanted to go back on my recent Wine Tasting Weekend. Don't miss it if you are looking for a great dining experience. Owner is great too."

"Had dinner at the "new" (relocated) Artisan on Sat. Great experience. Nice balance of trying to create an urban vibe in Paso Robles, but not over-the-top. Had the rabbit liver pate for my starter - a 10+. Exquisite. I'm a pate freak and this was as good as it gets. Main was wild boar tenderloin and pork cheeks on a risotto base. An 8.5 in my book. Very good. Both dishes get a "10" for presentation. Service was good. On the value scale: an overall 7.5. No entree under $30. Will definitely return."

"Four of us shared four starters and two entrees. The food was is generally of very high quality. However, if you're thinking about the razor clams, you'll do better with the clam strips at HoJos. A wine list with a reasonable selection of California wines is offered at low, medium and medium high price points. Our server was attentive without being in our faces, but it took two requests to get water at the beginning of the meal (which is delivered by the bus staff)."

"The food portions were not equal to th price. 2 pieces of shrip on on piece of flat bread for $14.00. Plus not that great. The service was slow for the small about of patrons present. Went to Artisan the first time it opened a nubmer of years ago and wasn;'t impressed. Hadn't been back for lunch since and will not go back again. Too many other lunch places on the park that give you bigger portions, better service and food for the same price."

"Artisan obviously has some very talented people in the kitchen. The offerings at our table of four were absolutely superb. Here's hoping the service can raise its game to a similar level.
The first courses arrived before the bottle of wine we ordered, so we sent them back and said we wanted the wine first. The kitchen runner gave me a murderous glare. When the waitress arrived with the wine, I said why we'd sent the salads back. There was no apology, no contrition. Thereafter, it seemed we were being punished for having complained. Flagging down the waitress became an ongoing challenge, and the kitchen runner was stone-faced throughout.
We might recommend Artisan to a friend, but with a big caveat: Great food, potentially shabby service."

"My husband and I did not have a good experience. We had a reservation, but still had to wait 30 minutes for our table. Speaking of our table, we were sandwiched in between two other couples. We felt cramped to say the least. The main dining room is very noisy. The halibut we ordered was great, but we had to ask the waitress to tell us what other items were on our plate. Not a great experience."

"Artisan's just opened new location left me with mixed feelings. My main issue is the claustrophobic feeling of the main dining area. The previous spot's open layout and windowed walls spoiled me. The new dining area is much quieter however and that is a very welcome change.
The restaurant is still working out the kinks of the new spot with slower than normal service and less precise food. Our table had two of the halibut, one was great and one clearly not as fresh. The cocktail list could lean a bit more to the aperitif style and clearly our choice of the Mexican Standoff won't be on the list for long.
Overall I love Artisan and look forward to seeing what the larger kitchen and new gadgets the chefs have will bring in the future."

"Artisan is simply the best in Paso. Go for the mushroom toast, stay for the great mixed drinks. the staff is very friendly and even more knowledgable. The menu offers something for everyone and all the dishes we tried were excellent. We started with the mushroom toast and seafood chowder. the mushroom toast was simply the best dish we had in Paso. The chowder, a white based chowder, was well balanced, rich and hearty.
For entrees we selected hangar steak and rabbit paella. Artisans take on Paella is complex and delicious. Highly recommended.
The wine list highlights the best of the best local wines. The mixed drink list reinvigorates drinks from the '30s and 40's. Seating in the dining room is comfy, but seating at the bar is more fun!"

"Overall good. Not exactly what I remembered from before. Lamb sand which my partner had he liked. I ordered the shrimp flatbread . They ere out of flatbread. How do you run out of flatbread? They served on a banquette . Not the same at all. Filling good. Too much bread. Disappointed in the fries. Soggy. Thin fries should be crispy on the whole batch.
Also, not thrilled everything was a'la carte when the sides were not that varied.
We had an advanced res but our table was not ideal.
Desert was AMAZING ! Trio of puddings: butterscotch-sarsaparilla -maple bourbon. Flavors and textures dreamy.
All in all good but could be better as I remember my first experience. I raved to people in Louisiana about the place and they knew it too!"

"Artisan seems to attract visitors and locals alike. They support local farmers and have a great menu highlighting in season items from sustainable sources. The wine list is extensive, and also has many local choices. Our server was knowledgeable about the wineries featured, and gave us many tips on good wine, food choices, and places we should visit while in Paso Robles. She was absolutely delightful, and even arranged our cab back to the hotel. Will definitely go back!"

"I had no expectation before coming here but oh my god the food is amazing.
We had shrimp caesar salad, PB&J meatball and gnocci and pistachio cheese cake with cherry compote.
I really love how the shrimps are grilled perfectly in the salad and the meatballs were and veggies matched so nicely. It was on a bit salty side but still the flavor was really nice."

"Each time the dining experience and food has been great-except this time. The kitchen was struggling to keep up, a very long time between appetizers and entree. the food was Luke warm not as hot as usual. Good, but not up to what I have come to expect. In all very ordinary this time. Artisan is moving closer to the square -corner 12th and Pine. It will be a much larger venue for them so it also has me worried that they will lose some of what makes them an intimate and popular place. But I will be up in Paso next year again so they have some time to get the kinks out before I go there again. I will give it one more try."

"Artisan lives up to its renown reputation and more. Leaving our hotel for dinner a stranger inquired where we were dining. I told him and he replied oh no! You have to eat at Artisan! Our wine tour guide gave us the same recommendation. Artisan is recommended by anyone who's ever visited Paso and of course the locals. Our server was knowledgeable about the entire menu and very patient (one of our party has several food allergies and she competently determined which entrees could most safely be eaten). Our party of three ordered Caesar and mixed green salads--a great mix of flavors/dressing. Our entrees included boar, scallops and steak--all cooked/presented to perfection. Desserts divine! Artisan's GM is warm, pleasant & unassuming."

"We made our reservation upon other reviews of the restaurant. Upon arrival we were impressed with look and overall feel of the place. Note: they are moving on June 1st
I ordered the meatballs with gnocchi as an appatizer which was delightful. Our entrees were the Wild Boar fillet with pork cheeks and the Rabbit paella,both of which were exotic, delicious and totally amazing!!.

Topped off with a Blueberry Crisp that made me wished I hadn't cleaned my dinner plate. Service was terrific and attentive without hovering.

"We were excited to try this place after hearing about it. The menu looked good but our services was so bad from start to finish that it spoiled the whole dining experience. We ordered a pizza and burger which were both very tasty but took 40 minutes without any other visit by our waiter. The restaurant was not very busy so not sure what excuse there could be. None was offered."

"We were visiting Paso Robles over Mothers Day weekend, and reserved a table for brunch. The prix fixe menu was very good (the regular menu was also an option), and the service was great. The food was very well prepared, with fresh flavors and excellent ingredients. Even though it was Mothers Day, the service was unhurried, friendly and professional. I am not at all surprised that Artisan is one of the top rated restaurants in the area, it was certainly worth a visit."

"My husband and I were visiting from out of town and this spot was recommended. The food and service far exceeded our expectations the food was fresh, delicious and original. The servers were very knowledgeable about the wine list and the dessert was fabulous. I am NOT a dessert eater and was pleasantly surprised by the delicious and unique dessert. Highly recommend this restaurant."

"Had another great dinner at Artisan. Can always count on them to do something unusual. While my wife had halibut (done very well, but no surprise they do fish very well), I had a tenderloin of wild boar with pig's cheek. Never had either before, but both were excellent - tender and juicy and tasted wonderful. Only concern is that they are moving to a location nearby that does not have as convenient parking as the current location."

"Visiting the Paso Robles wine country area, we hoped to find a restaurant to make Mothers Day a little special. Heard some good things about Artisan from a relative. My husband and I were not disappointed. I had the Rabbit Paella, which was delicious, but my husband hit the jackpot with his Abalone Tostada starter and Wild Boar, Pig Cheek over Fennel Risotto entree. He put in the top ten meals that he's ever had, and we've dined in many fine restaurants internationally. We both paired our meals with wine tastings. A nice touch was an descriptive sheet under the three choices. We hadn't been to this wine country in a number of years. It has exploded like so many California wine areas."

"I ate here for lunch earlier in April on the recommendation of our wine tour guide. It was amazing then, and just as awesome when we returned. The mushroom toast small plate was absolutely unbelievable. The dessert alone is worth stopping in for. The s'mores are unlike any you've ever eaten, guaranteed! The pistachio cheesecake with cherry topping was great as well. I'm not crazy about the wine selection, but we split a bottle of Shramsburg Blanc de Blancs and were very satisfied with it. I'd recommend this place to anyone stopping in Paso Robles. What a darling little town!"

"The food was beautifully presented except for a salmon entree, which was ordered "cooked through>" It looked burnt on the top layer. My husband does not complain so it was not sent back. We had waited a long time for the entrees already. I was surprised that the chef would be willing to send out such an error. It was a very busy Sat. night although early (6pm). The other entree, scallops and shrimp was divine!. The sald was carefully made although the buttermilk dressing on the salad was bland."

"For a sure bet, even though we have many, many wonderful top-quality restaurants in the county, we are never disappointed when we choose Artisan for a special occasion! The staff is warm, knowledgeable, fast, and give great service. The appetizers are unique and delightful, the regular menu is diverse and delicious, and the specials are always wonderful. Our favorite place in North County!"
