"The food was fine....certainly not outstanding. It was very crowded which may be the reason the service was pretty poor. We waited 10-15 minutes before being seated, despite having arrived on time for our reservation; we waited 10 minutes or more to get any attention from our waitress, including water and menus. It does have a good atmosphere and ambiance. Just needs to pick up the service level."

"This place always has a good selection of oysters on the half shell. If you can make it to their oyster happy hours, it can even be a pretty good deal. Sit at the back bar next to the oyster shucking area."

"Started going here in the early '80s but haven't been in about 4 years. Boy, has it expanded! Yet somehow the vibe is still there. Bars are overcrowded (in a good way), tables are full, and menu is superb. We had Cape Cod Day Boat Scallops (six of them!) and a huge Grilled Chicken whose formal name escapes me. It's also a good people-watching place.Glad to know that somethings never change!"

"This place is jumping! Must have reservations unless you want to join the groups waiting on the sidewalk.
But the food, service and decor are worth it. Fast paced, a fresh menu and casual antique bar surroundings
make for a pleasant meal. Caution: if you're with a group and want conversation, ask for a booth."

"We were told this was a must do while in DC by others and validated by our concierge at the hotel. Get a reservation in advance. We did and tried to change it but not possible. We were there for an early dinner at 5:30 and it was packed. Nice atmosphere, good food overall, and the service was very good."

"I brought my parents here for the D.C. experience and I have to complement Old Ebbitt and Opentable for giving us my requested (a week before on opentable) window seat in the -somewhat- more quiet room. It was really still quite loud but that was also because it was Happy Hour time on a Thursday. The seating was prompt with reservations, but don't try and come here without them unless you want to wait an hour. Though there was ample bar seating, it still wasn't enough for all those who were waiting (also because it was HH time too).

Service was excellent, decorations nice, food was okay, maybe 7 out of ten.

You cant beat the location if you are doing the whole showing the parents the White House thing, but bustle &noise detracted some."

"The first time we dined at Old Ebbitt Grill was two years ago for a birthday celebration. It was fantastic then and is just as good now.
We were celebrating our daughter's graduation from GWU Law and coincidentally my birthday fell on the same day. We were seated in a terrific location. Our service was top notch and we had a great time. Our food was prepared fast and served hot. We ordered a wide variety of dishes and appetizers and every dish was excellent. We were all served at the same time with efficiency. We ordered a bottle of house Pinot Griggio. Old Ebbitt has their own private label California wine and it was reasonably priced and very good. We were not rushed in any way and our server was friendly and funny."

"This was the second time for my wife and I. We brought her parents, sister, and nephew from out of town. Old Ebbitt Grill was very accommodating with hiccups on our reservation (due to us, not them), had fabulous service, and provided impressive fare. "Went for our son's college graduation. Our waiter Thomas was very personable and efficient. Slightly noisy ambiance but it is a saloon/grille. Our meals , sea-food were superb!. The wine selection is very nice and complimented our meals perfectly. We were taken to our table on time. Food was delivered piping hot and without a long wait for as busy as they are. The only suggestion is that the noise leval is distracting. It is located very near the White House and the Metro. It is casual dress so after a day of sight-seeing you don't have to gussy up to dine. Touristy, but then it is Washington D.C. The history and antiques are very interesting.Prices are very moderate for D.C. Wonderful time."

"My husband and I had dinner at OEG on a Friday night afer work and it was a wonderful way to end the work week. "There were about a thousand "diners" so this is a process and not pleasure. Twenty minutes late to table, expensive average wine, Buffalowings with an awful liquid sauce but nothing to cleanliness, starter pushed over to get main course in front of you but not cleared away away and incredible noise level. "I've lived in Washington for 35 years, and the Old Ebbitt has always been a trustworthy friend, so it makes me sad to say that on my last two visits I've found it tired and wan. Wilted, spotty lettuce in the salad at lunch, overcooked eggs at brunch. The main dining room even smells a bit, like it needs to be stripped and steam-cleaned. But it's always crowded, so there may be little incentive for management to stop living on its history and storied reputation and bring it back up to snuff. Sad."

"A little bit of old world charm and elegance! You walk into old world ambiance and are greeted with a smile. The Maitre d, attired in a suit, seats you at a cloth covered table with fresh flowers. The waiter was great, service was great, the food came in perfect timing and in abundance and absolutely delicious! Wish we had room for dessert. I will definitely recommend Old Ebbitt Grill and will be dining there again on our next visit! The only negative was that it was on the loud side and my husband has a hearing problem. "My friends were looking for a place on L'Enfant and we decided to check Old Ebbitt Grill out after reading several positive reviews.
The ambience was nice but the food was satisfactory, especially given the high prices.
The wait staff rarely checked on the table, which was strange for a higher scale restaurant.
The space was crammed as the added chair at the end of existing booths. Our reservation was for 5pm (they only had that and 9pm available when booked 3 days in advance), I can't even imagine what it looks like during the dinner rush.

Bottom line: Nice decor, historical setting, but average food and service for higher prices."

"We just went for lunch. They do not have outdoor eating, but we were seated in the center Atrium near the fountain which had an outdoor feeling. Our server, Charlie, was attentive and very friendly. I had the seafood medley with crositini. It was just enough and out of this world with flavor. There were many Items on this menu that sounded good. We will be back the next time we come to DC."

"I never go to DC without dining at the Old Ebbitt Grill. The history of this restaurant is very interesting. The decor is fabulous for those who like to feel transported back to an elegant time.

All of my family had wonderful meals which were unique in their presentation and taste.

The bar is quite loud but gives the restaurant excitement.

The only thing I would change would be the bread service, which was tasty but small loaves which were cold. I recommend hot bread basket.

All in all, I am looking forward to a return visit."

"Brought my parents here for a real "DC" experience. The place is huge and does a huge volume of business, but they manage it very efficiently. They were very accommodating and friendly when we checked in. The wait staff was excellent, attentive and professional. As far as the food, the oysters were very tasty. The main courses (we had halibut, crab cakes and ribeye) were solid but not spectacular. The pricing is surprisingly reasonable. I would definitely return."

"Old Ebbitt Grill was wonderful! I had reservations and I was escorted to my table immediately. EVERYONE was extremely pleasant...from the host and hostess to the waiters and manager. I visited Old Ebbitt once a few years ago and wasn't impressed. I'm so glad I gave it another chance. The food was excellent. I couldn't decide between two of my favorites, french toast and crab cakes. When my friend told me that she had never eaten French toast (I couldn't believe it either!!) it was a no brainer...I ordered the French toast, she ordered the crab cakes and we were both in Heaven as I we tasted both entrees. She's a new French toast convert! The crab cakes were pretty good too...not a lot of filler. Old Ebbitt is my new go to spot in DC."

"The Old Ebbitt Grill is an "old-school, Washington institution". I had not been there for a while and it was not my intent to come back (all the other restaurants I wanted to go to did not have any reservations available for the times I needed.) The overall dining experience was very positive- seated promptly for the reservation, consistent service by the wait staff, nice wine list, varied selection of appetizers and entrees- not too many as to be overwhelming, but enough of a choice. I would say the food was very good, and I would certainly come back."

"The food and ambience was great, but the service was not good at all. Waiter did not come to check on us much, we had to ask for the free bread that should have come when we first sat down. Our neighbors received better service than we did and we had the same waitress."

"Celebrated a co-worker's birthday and the restaurant provided a complimentary dessert with a candle. The waiter was very attentive and made it a special occasion. I definitely tipped him extra since he didn't have to go beyond his duties. Such great service is definitely appreciated! Food was good but the dessert (warm Blondie with ice cream and chocolate chips) was amaaaaaaaazing!"

"Impossible to be in DC without visiting Old Ebbitt Grill each and every time. Reception, attention to Open Table requests, food and service are of the highest order. Breakfast there each and every morning is a must, regardless of the provisions of excellent local hotels. Ambience is absolutely great and never to be missed. Tried to book for dinner this time but the earliest they could fit us in was 11.00 pm or on standby! - The lesson we learned: book earlier!"

"I could not find anything special from the food. Service..?? I sometimes felt like I and my family were ignored.. the waitress was not so friendly.. she was just busy..I did not feel like I was treated as valuable.. Imagine that your waitress just puts your bill on your dining table quickly walking beside you without saying anything... At that time, I realized that I was in a wrong place.. Except the fact that the restaurant has a long history and a good location.. honestly, I don't know what makes it special.."

"I found the menu's entree selection limited but may have been due to brunch. The coleslaw was bland and my blackened swordfish sandwich was just okay.
