Restaurant Reviews for Resto

Resto reservations Resto

111 East 29th Street
New York, NY 10016

Resto, French slang for casual restaurant, opened its doors in April 2007. The concept of a laid back neighborhood gathering place with approachable Belgian food in the style of New York, was created by the owner, Christian Pappanicholas. Resto has become a destination in Gramercy Park/Murray Hill for a delicious dinner, weekend brunch or a late night bite. The knowledgeable and friendly staff is well versed in the extensive Belgian beer list and the thoughtful wine list which focuses on a selection of French, Italian and Spanish wines. The menu is crafted using traditional French technique, with an emphasis on seasonal, mostly local, farm fresh ingredients. Resto prides itself on elements like a revolving seasonal menu as well as large format plates such as Cote De Boeuf, Whole Roasted Pig or Lamb. Resto's dining room can accommodate 55 guests with 10 seats at the bar where we encourage full dining. We also have seasonal outdoor seating which can accommodate 6 guests.

Dining Style: Casual Elegant
Price: $31 to $50

Review 2 for Resto

Overall Rating 5.0 out of 5 (Outstanding)
"What a great place! The atmosphere was warm, relaxed, and the entire staff was pleasant and cheerful on one of the most miserable weekends of the year. (hurricane-like winds and rain). Our waiter was on top of his game, and sent the sommelier over when we were unsure of what wine to choose. She was knowledgeable, personable, relaxed, and EAGER to please us, rather then make us feel inferior for not being familiar with their wine list. The food was simple, straight forward comforting and yummy. Braised short rib that fell apart with a fork. The striped bass was perfectly cooked, crispy on the outside, moist on the inside. Sad that we had to pay the bill and leave. Didn't break the bank, and worth going to again and again!"

Review 3 for Resto

Overall Rating 4.0 out of 5 (Very Good)
"This was my second visit to Resto. I have been once before for dinner, but had heard excellent things about their brunch and wanted to give it a try. I was not disappointed. The food was delicious and beautifully plated.
The service was pretty good. Our waitress was very nice and didn't make us feel rushed. The host, however, seemed to be less than pleased to be at work and came off a bit gruff. All in all, an excellent dining experience. I will definitely go back.

Review 7 for Resto

Overall Rating 3.0 out of 5 (Good)
"The Tete De Cochon was incredible, the beer selection was fabulous, the burger was excellent, the dessert was great. The server's recommendations were great and he was very friendly, but drinks took forever to come, his visits to the table were infrequent, he forgot to bring us bread, and the fish was not properly cooked. They were extra busy and seemed a little short staffed, so it could've been due to that, but still, when one pays as much as one pays here, great service should be expected. I would be willing to try it again, on a slower night, but would not return again on a weekend or busy time."

Review 8 for Resto

Overall Rating 2.0 out of 5 (Fair)
"OKAY- Is anyone who works here excited about working here? Is it truly difficult to crack a smile? Next time, can you provide an explaination for why a person cannot move their chair in order to have a non-yelling conversation with each one another instead of just scolding them?
The wine list should be thrown out if the person in charge of the wine list cannot print it correctly and if it throws the wait staff off when tabulating the bill. These are proff-reading skills we learned in middle school.
The chef still takes pride in the food he/she was serving. This was the only saving grace for Resto. I will consider the RESTOF nyc's establishments from now on.

Review 11 for Resto

Overall Rating 3.0 out of 5 (Good)
"Resto was not exactly what I had expected. It was much more of a bistro than a true restaurant. The Beer list however is commendable and definately worth mentioning. The Wines were also very good. The food however was lacking. The portions were small but perfect sized. If everyone ate like this, our country wouldn't be overweight. Bu the food was only decent. I guess that's my biggest complaint...but hey, that's why we go out right?"

Review 12 for Resto

Overall Rating 3.0 out of 5 (Good)
"Nice enough, especially for those fond of Belgian beers, of which their list is exceptional, for those for whom moules frites is an old favorite. Or for those who love crowds and noise. Although we were looked after wonderfully, I'd rather hear one another. Definitely not romantic dining, but a very enjoyable if narrow food place."

Review 14 for Resto

Overall Rating 4.0 out of 5 (Very Good)
"We went for restaurant week. Both of us got the onion soup, which had an rich, delicious sweet onion broth. The scallop portion that I chose as my entree was unfortunately small, and the fish was a little rubbery. My date loved his pork, though. Beer pairings were awesome. We'll be back sometime to order a la carte - I regret not trying the fries!"

"The restaurant week menu was boring, so we ordered a la carte -- so glad we did! We got to try their moules frites, which were delicious.
They also had an amazing beer selection and our waitress was very knowledgeable and happy to give us suggestions to go with our food.

We will definitely be going back!

Review 18 for Resto

Overall Rating 4.0 out of 5 (Very Good)
"I've been to Belgium many times, so I had many opportunities to sample her cuisine from high end to street stall foodies. Resto didn't disappoint me at all. To me, it is a hearty version of Belgian food. I really loved my country pate, pomme frites served in an adorable mug, and a Liege waffle. I wish I could have Leffe with my lunch, but it was weekday afternoon and I was working. Great pity. I found mussels a bit lukewarm, but still plump and juicy mussels were delicious with light broth containing cardamom seeds.
I'll definitely go back there, and think of organizing office birthday lunch there soon.

Review 25 for Resto

Overall Rating 3.0 out of 5 (Good)
"Had been to Resto before--twice in fact. Both times I had the excellent burger. (In fact, my friend annointed it best burger in the city and, if my memory serves me correctly, it's certainly in the conversation.) Went for restaurant week this time around. Had the too fatty veal and got the distinct Restaurant Week impression that I was eating the joint's leftovers. However, my date's lamb shoulder was excellent, moist and flavorful. The appetizers were mediocre (pate and salad) but the desserts were pretty tasty despite their pedestrian concept and presentation (a waffle and pistachio cake). The service was excellent! Oh, but the wine pairings...terrible. One tasted like cement glue, another like sweaty feet. All in all, good but not great."

Overall Rating 2.0 out of 5 (Fair)
"The appetizers at Resto are much better than the main courses. The salad was delicious and so was the starter tart. Two of us had mussels which were pretty good although the accompanying fries were thick and not the thin, crisp ones we like. Two of us had hamburgers which were probably the worst hamburgers we have ever had--cold, overcooked and tasteless. Do not order the hamburgers. Dessert was good, too, but overall not worth coming back to Resto. Service was pretty clueless."

"This restaurant is on my way home all the time and when I saw it featured on restaurant week, I thought it would be a great time to try it out. It starts out with a nice feel and ambiance. However, we were asked to leave the table after we finished our meal. I found that offensive. The manager did offer to buy us a drink, but apparently that was the case with a lot of people since the bar was too crowded and it became really uncomfortable.

Considering the food is not good, I don't recommend this place- not even for an eat and run.

Thanks.

"Went to Resto on a recommendation from a friend who lives in the neighborhood. Sat at the bar with a friend for wine and dinner. Got the recommended burger and fries. Burger was maybe six ounces. Salad was oversalted. Fries were the greasiest I've ever experienced and they sat like a rock in our stomachs. The pistachio financier dessert seemed drenched in butter. The staff was very nice but I won't be returning because the food was greasy and fatty. I left hungry."

Staff are now helpful, friendly which proves for a great relaxed atmosphere in a really cool venue with fantastic belgian cuisine."

"This is a Belgian brasserie of sorts, despite the potentially misleading Italian sounding name. It has a homey relaxed feel and an outstanding selection of Belgian beers and ales to complement a simple but excellent menu. At lunch, the grilled cheese with porkbelly is still as tasty as ever. The Moules Frites is outstanding. The soups, like cream of celery root, are excellent. Hard to go wrong here."

Review 36 for Resto

Overall Rating 3.0 out of 5 (Good)
"I have been to Resto a few times, often because I am craving their very good hamburger with gruyere and egg. The fried chicken and waffles and hangover pasta are also hefty, tasty dishes on the days when salad just won't cut it. Resto also has a great selection of beers.

However, I am constantly baffled by the apathetic service - when I have to wait at the door by myself while staff members finish a conversation with each other or ask for water after sitting at the table for 10 minutes, it decreases my love of the place...eventually the quality of the food will not be enough to balance out the b.s. and I'll stop going.

"Belgian cooking is more than "moules frites" and Resto gives a chance to sample additional goodies. That having been siad the "frites" are the best we have had anywhere in Manhatten. Couple this with a selection of about 100 Belgian beers and you have a real gem."

Review 40 for Resto

Overall Rating 2.0 out of 5 (Fair)
"Two years ago I lived near Resto and went there all the time for affordable but amazing food served by a down-to-earth staff. My recent return was disappointing. Prices seemed higher and their usually excellent burger was overcooked and textureless. The worst part was our shockingly obnoxious waiter who took every opportunity to vulgarly squeeze another dollar out of us. He tried to shame my companion into ordering a full entrée she didn't want (he asked her three times what else she was having as an entree in a rude tone) and tried to talk us into ordering all manner of extras and upgrades. He did the same to two tables near us. Not the polite, warm service I was used to and I do not plan to return."

Review 41 for Resto

Overall Rating 5.0 out of 5 (Outstanding)
"The food is always of such a high quality and so interesting, right down to the fine points e.g. a great Indian-style lime pickle mayo for the fries that accompany all of the alternative and very different steamed mussel dishes available on any night. This night the mustard and bacon and wine-steamed mussels were up to usual high standards. My wife's carbonade was beautiful. And, although I am reasonablly knowledgeable about Belgian beer, the young waiter was able to help me explore new stuff and her advice was right on. At desert time, I did not need much more beer, and so the waiter brought me a taste of a great dark double that was delicious with our desert. Next time! To me this is what reasonably-priced comfort food should be."

"Amazing experience. The menu doesn't begin to express how good the food is. Descriptions are to the point, the food explodes with incredible flavors. Great Belgian beer selection. Devlied Eggs on crispy pork toast and tete de cochon sandwich (do not be scared - this is not a jellied pate but a GREAT sandwich) were amazing. Hangar steak was a great dish. This is a busy loud place so do not expect a quiet night out. Hoping to go for a feast with a group soon."

"Everyone in our party thoroughly enjoyed the experience. The food was excellent, as was the service. The sommelier was responsive and helpful and pointed us to an excellent bottle.

My only reservation is that I wouldn't recommend it to anyone with a hearing impairment or using a hearing aid. Too noisy.

Overall Rating 4.0 out of 5 (Very Good)
"In short, eating at Resto can change your life. The food is creative, yet couched in tradition. Example: The cheeseburger with fries is a classic pub dish, but the combination of exquisite preparation and attention to detail makes it one of the best in the city; the burger has almost a smoky note and a slightly crisp crust, but is medium rare in the middle with a perfect texture. The fries are thick and actually cooked in oil that's actually hot enough (they are crisp with a soft center, never mushy). And at less than $10, it's like learning what a burger should be."

"This is a great find, just a block off Park Ave South. The food was straight forward and well prepared. The pate was odd looking but tasty, if a little heavy on the garlic. Beer very pricey, as was the wine, but excellent choices. Prixe Fix was a good value. Mussels with curry was a mouthful of flavor."
