When Shinbashi originally opened in 1974 waitresses wearing traditional clothing served the then novel sushi and traditional Japanese dishes. Shinbashi became popular amongst Japanese businessmen visiting New York and the restaurant was reviewed in the New York Times by Ruth Reichi in 1998 calling it "venerable Japanese."
The new incarnation is following in the tradition of attracting Japanese guests but does so in a modern setting. The restaurant remains streamlined and cleanly lit so as to showcase the food. Quality of fish and presentation are of the highest standard and it is this attention to detail that is carried into the attentive service. Shinbashi offers an environment for you to appreciate your meal at the pace you choose and the space to enjoy your conversation.
"We really enjoyed the special Omakase 8 course dinner presentation and tastes. As soon as we sat down, our server brought hot towels to the table to refresh ourselves. The chef choice dinner included a mini appetizer of a broccoli rabe type green marinated in a light broth, assortment of three sashimi, cubed rib-eye steak (tender but a little chewy) a piece of seafood and chicken steamed in a clay pot with a generous helping of "meaty" mushrooms (fun to eat and sip the rich broth from small clay cups) assortment of three tempura with a white radish garnish, three pieces of nigiri, a rich full-bodied red miso soup, and a dessert of ice cream with a wonderful red bean."

"The food was very good, the service not so good. We waited a lot to have the order taken and waited a lot to get items such as the soy sauce. Beside this point, that could be easily improved, the restaurant is very nice in any aspect."

"Food and service top notch. For a reasonably priced Japanese-dining experience, this is the place to be. A vibrant mix of casual and business diners as well as couples looking for a romantic retreat. We had the 8-course omakase dinner for two. Each course appeared in prompt succession; service was attentive and friendly and the quality was outstanding. This coming from card-carrying international foodies is high praise indeed. The room, while architecturally appealing, is in need of repair."

"We had just about the worst service I've ever experienced at any restaurant today. We sat down for lunch and no waiter showed up until we had to ask for the waiter at least a couple of times. There were two of us and we both ordered the exact same thing. Only one of our lunches showed up and the 2nd didn't show up for another 20 minutes. By the time we both got our lunches, my food was cold. There were no apologies. And they never brought the tempura sauce for my friend. When I brought it to their attention as we're paying our bill, there were no apologies. As a matter of fact, the waiter didn't even acknowledge my complaint. I am absolutely disapppointed by the lack of service and what was worse was the fact that they offered no apologies."

"Has seen better days. Wash the big windows, paint the walls, make the space more intimate and approachable. For a midtown bigtime address it should speak to that."

"Young servers in Japanese restaurants can be inattentive or not well versed in English. I was offered an alternative sake to the one I ordered and was assured that it was comparable in every way. It was delicious. And it was four times the price of the one I selected. I did not make a stink about it, but next time I will grill the server about what they are suggesting. Buyer beware."

"The food and service at Shinbashi were really great and the price of the bento box specials were very reasonable. The salmon teriyaki was delicious, and liked the option to change the california roll included in the bento box to a spicy tuna roll for an extra $3.00. Most importantly do not miss the green tea crepe cake which is from Lady M cake boutique and is to die for."
