Trattoria Grappolo
Trattoria Grappolo is a casual Italian bistro located in the wine-producing region of Santa Ynez, California (2 hours North of Los Angeles). Grappolo is the perfect place to enjoy with family and friends. Walk though the door and a savory aroma of freshly baked pizza and simmering tomato sauce teases the senses. The combination of the pastoral ambiance of Italy with the lush vine fields and oak-studded hills of Santa Ynez helps create the ideal setting to serve up some of Central California's most creative and authentic Italian dishes. Specialties include: Carpaccio, Rollino Veneto - rolled-up pizza pouches stuffed with smoked mozzarella and radicchio - handcrafted pastas and pizzas, aged New York steaks, rack of lamb, and fresh seafood dishes. Desserts such as lavender creme brulee and warm chocolate torte with espresso anglaise are a hit with guests. Trattoria Grappolo features an expansive wine list, and a large VIP wine cellar that accommodates 40 for private parties.

"Came here after the Wine Country Half Marathon. Place was packed, which was a good sign. Had the carpacco plate, which was excellent. Had the chicken gnocchi, but the chicken tasted funny. Not ha-ha funny, but left-outside-for-too-long funny. Service was alright. Waiter seemed to have the demeanor of a funeral director. Buspeople were OK, but a little slow. Had to ask for bread. Then, butter. Then, a butter knife. Then, while I had my fork full of carpaccio mid-way to my mouth, the waitress was about to take the plate away when she stopped and asked, "Oh. Are you still eating?"
Overall, food was good."

"This is a great, but little, place with a very solid set of offerings. Wine list is excellent if a bit marked up price-wise. The dishes are good. They are not four star quality or to die for; but they are definitely the best option around. The staff were fantastic though. Our server, the hostess, even the waiter's assistants. We had a great time. Note: they cram you in there like sardines. And you want to get the inside out pizza appetizer. Trust me."

Over the past years , the menu has shrunken and become more simplistic and less focused on quality.Maybe is because of the economic crisis, forcing you to become more competitive in prices, but quality shouldn't be the first casualty in this committment.Good wine selection accentuating the local abundance."

"A great little restaurant with white tablecloths, with enclosed open-air porch option to enjoy a relaxing lunch or dinner. Extensive and expensive wine list to choose from. The food was delicious and the waiter was very attentive. My friend and I met for a leisurely lunch and stayed for two hours with no indication from the staff that we needed to hurry off. A lovely meeting place for good food."

"We were in town for the wine festival. We got there early and there was no wait, seated immediately, "Your table is ready", which never happens. We had great service, the waiter knew his wine and his suggestions were excellent. I ordered the clamari for the table and it was grilled with chees stuffing and the perfect amount char yet tender. My wife had afresh salad and the other couple had the special salad, all three was excellent. My capresse was ample but surprisingly bland. However the pork chop more than made up for it. My friend ordered a special pasta combo he likes, and the waiter never batted an eye and said, certainly the chef could accommodate a special request. His dish was delicious. Great place, glad we went!"

"Food was delicious. Service was good, but our particular server wasn't the most outgoing , although the restaurant was slammed when we went, so he was probably swamped (it was the weekend of the Santa Barbara wine festival) - he was professional and prompt. Tightly packed restaurant (very little space between tables), so not the place to go for a quiet, romantic meal, which is what we were looking for. It's much more of a family place. Would go back again for a different occasion since the food was excellent, and the wine list was great!"

"Our server Eric was amazing. We were torn between a couple or food items and he made outstanding suggestions where we could try both the items we were torn between in choosing. He made excelent wine choices to pair with our food choices and what a great combination. The food was awesome and we have been telling everyone that we see to go to Grappolo's. "The food here never disappoints and this time was no different. The pastas are so full of flavor and fresh ingredients and portions are ample. It is a small restaurant so the tables are close together but that just gave us a chance to meet and talk with some interesting people at the table next to us. "Authentic Italian food served in a high energy atmosphere. Every dish our party tried was delicious. The pastas are home-made and each sauce is different. The lasanga was a special and was perfect. Tortelloni was delicious. Try the eggplant appetizer;better than anything in Rome.

"This was my second visit, and i had a much better experience the first time around. Maybe they've gotten too popular - we felt rushed by the server, like they needed to turn the table over. I'm pretty sure we were there for under an hour. Also the dish I ordered was not as described. The server assured me there was just a touch of cream in the tomato based sauce, but it seemed more like the other way around. Just couldn't enjoy and I don't think they cared."

"Normally I love this place and go whenever I am in Santa Ynez. This visit was a rare disappointment as the food was sub par. The wine was great but the Cesar Salad was from poorly selected Romaine and very little dressing, no way worth the price. Tortellini, which I almost always get, had one section that tasted fishy (and shouldn't contain any) and one section that tasted like Comet Cleanser (yech!). Clearly an off night for a normally fantastic place. I plan to come back, and give them another try."

"A favorite for us locals but also for visitors to the area. Grappolo's staff is friendly and attentive, the atmosphere warm and relaxing, and the food is unbeatable. If you are a regular (which for us is only once every month or two), the staff remembers your favorite wines, salads etc. Since Grappolo opened, we have had every item on the menu and many specials, and have never been disappointed. Everything is prepared fresh on site. The recipes are wonderful, and the presentation exceptional. One may sit at the counter and watch the food being prepared.
The wine list is excellent, as are the desserts. We recommend Grappolo 100%."

"We live here in the valley and are foodies. We eat out for a date night every Friday or Saturday night. Grappolo is by far the best restaurant in the valley. Everything we have ever had here is delicious!! The only thing that some may not like about the restaurant that it is very small and they pack them in so it can be quite noisy. The penne pasta with mushrooms is my husbands favorite I love their salads and all the pizzas are the best. The chicken and steaks are amazing too!!"

"The special that evening was sole in white wine, butter and caper sauce which was fabulous. The fish was ample in size, moist and tender. One of their best dishes. The capresse salad is also excellent with generous enough portions for two to share the order. Staff at Grappolos is always friendly and ready to be helpful."

"Very slow service. our dinner order was not taken for an hour and 15 minutes after we sat down. Our salads came out and our entrees did not arrive until 45 minutes after our salad plates had been removed and only when we complained. The waiter was overwhelmed and alone, we were in the private room which had our party of 13 people and 4 other tables of 8 and 6. We complained to the manager but she gave us excuses about them intentionally leaving us alone to enjoy our wine. We were never asked about coffee or dessert and still had to ask for our check."

"The food was excellent as well as the service. My only complaint was there were two tables for two, one was near the water bar (?) and when first seated there, every time one of the waiters went to there, the floor sagged bringing my chair down a bit. We moved to the adjacent table which, as it turns out was near the entrance to the rest rooms so we had that traffic to bear as well. If you were with a group at a big table, this would not have been an issue. Nonetheless, the food and the service made this a great place to go back to."

"The dining room is very cozy and the place is popular so make a reservation. Can get very loud with all the wine being poured and drank before people arrive for dinner. The food is fantastic and worth putting up with some rowdy people. Our server this time around was a bit off standish, but the hostess was great and so were all the other staff members."

"I absolutely loved this resturant. All of their seafood is fresh and all of the veggies are locally fresh. I highly recommend the baked chicken with proscuitto. The service was friendly and always on time with everything. This resturant would be perfect for either a romantic dinner or family dinner. If you ever happen to be in that area and you dont visit this resturant, you will definately be missing out."

"Found this restaurant when visiting Santa Ynez, and now myself and husband return whenever we are in the area (from LA). The food is excellent and we enjoy the atmosphere. The restaurant has an open kitchen which attests to its quality. The staff is efficient and friendly, and the meals are not rushed. As for groups, when we are there, there are sometimes group tables of 6 or 8. We recommend it.
