Cutting edge vegetarian food with added flavor and no politics in this sleek and stylish underground room that’s a showcase for crazy, pop-tastic dishes from award-winning chef, Amanda Cohen. A below-the-radar wine list, raves from Gourmet and Bon Appetit, and vegetables presented in all their earth-shattering, gob-smacking glory.
"Amazingly creative, but with a higher sweetness level and fat content than you'd expect -- which is why people love it. Add sugar (or bring out sugar) and add fat to anything to make it a crowd-pleaser. The "mushroom" was a rich pate and therefore very satisfying dish. The fennel-sunflower soup cooled too much when poured over greens and pretzels (great as crutons). Primarly flavors: sweet and salty -- it could use some balance with chili, perhaps, or lemon. My mistake to follow this with parsnip pillows, essentially gnocci from parsnip instead of potato. Again, a bowl with sweetness overwhelming, not enough balance. Then salted-caramel popcorn flavored pudding. Delicious and a truly memorable creation. Very rich. And again, very sweet!"

"jelepeno hush puppies andmaple butter- wonderful! Very innovative vegeterian menu. Tried cauliflowe and parsnip dishes. Both were very good. Eggplant tiramasu was delicious, celery cheesecake was ok. Being a sall place hard to get the reservation, however it is worth the try. Over all a great experience."

"we ordered mushroom terrine and scallion pancakes as appetizer and it was delicious! very well executed, beautiful presentation. Main course was smoked cauliflower for me and tofu with string beans for my BF. Again, delicious, but the cauliflower portion was much too small. We skipped desserts as they were really tiny and expensive, but again, looked really good. Over all, we would come back, but this would not be our regular place - too pricey for us for what you get, but definitely interesting change."

"I was impressed from the moment I walked through the door. The staff are charming and the service was perfect - attentive without being intrusive, service was prompt but no feeling of being rushed, perfect amount of time between courses. The food, OMG, the food! Everything was delicious. I'd thought the portions would be small and I'd leave still feeling hungry - I mean, how filling can vegetables be? The joke was on me! The portions were large and the veggies were rich. I'm still boggled at the creativity in all the dishes and how tasty everything was."

"Innovative vegetarian and vegan food with some of the best service in ny. The food is just plain excellent, no need to make exceptions because its veg food, it would stand up as amazing tasting food no matter what it was compared to, will definitely be back next time we are in town, book in advance, this place is small and has a long wait list for a table."

"The menu is imaginative, and very well thought out and executed. The service is very personalized, and attentive. It's become so popular it can sometimes be a bit difficult to get reservations, but try, because it's worth it."

"This restaurant is not for everyone. They serve imaginative, beautifully prepared vegetarian cuisine. Fine dining on vegetables. It is a small narrow space. You don't go for the decor or ambience, you go for creative vegetarian cooking (with vegan options) bursting with flavor and creativity. I recommend it to all vegetarians and to anyone who is skeptical that dishes without meat or fish can be satisfying and sophisticated and memorable. They also have a short reasonably priced wine list with unusual lovely wines."

"I was hapt with Parsnip, and the hush puppies were good, but what I liked best was the maple butter for the hush puppies. Prices were fine but it was overrated on my view. Loved the lighting but it was not sheer perfection as yelpers wrote, which makes me distrust yelp more than I already do."

"We had a very good experience. The food was delicious and unusual, and our waitress picked the perfect wine to go with my meal. I had "Beans" which was spicy, which paired amazingly well with "touch of class" wine. The appetizer, "fennel" combined various flavors so delightfully. I loved the dessert, celery cheesecake and celeriac ice cream. Oddly, I did not taste celery but my husband did- delicious no matter what. We would come back. There is a two Month wait to get a reservation for this tiny place- only 18 seats."

"The food was amazing and the service was just as good. When I mad my reservation months in advance of the night of the dinner, I made a small note about it being my friend's belated birthday. Amanda Cohen was kind enough to add a candle to the dessert dish we ordered, making the evening that much more memorable. Fantastic place all around."

"Everything about this restaurant is wonderful. It's small, intimate and delicious. The staff is not only friendly, but knows their dishes extremely well. I can't wait to go back and try the dishes for the next season.
While vegetarian, its not just about roasting the vegetables, but instead the vegetables are showcased."

"We had struggled to secure a reservation for many months, and my friend was now heavily pregnant. As a warning for others who may be larger than normal (for whatever reason) - this restaurant is TINY. Try going as a group of 4 because then you get 2 tables between 4, rather than 1 table between 3. We ended up getting stuck by the door too which was annoying because everytime they needed to access the basement (frequently) we had to get up. We managed to move, but only because we asked. Food was delicious though - especially the eggplant tiramisu with rosemary candy floss. Service was speedy. Some of the food could have been served a bit warmer for my liking (the fennel soup was a little bit tepid for me)"

"Very creative and well-presented vegetarian food. Some of the flavors were interesting, but overall it was a bit bland. We will give it another shot, possibly in the summer when there is a better (and different) selection of produce. I waited about 3 months to get a reservation, it wasn't worth the wait and certainly did not measure up to all the hype."

"EXCELLENT!! Truly redefines what vegetarian/vegan can be! I dare any carnivore to say they weren't excited and satiated. A rollicking roller coaster ride for the taste buds! I sat in amazement as one bite full after the other delighted my senses. Intimate space with quality minimal design, allows the food to take center stage. I went home with left overs, ate them for breakfast, and ordered the cookbook online! I don't even cook!!"

"Great vegetarian/vegan restaurant. Finally a place where I can take my vegan friend and she can order ANYTHING on the menu! Jalapeno hush puppies with maple butter a must!!!
Very small place - that is why it's so hard to get a reservation. Perhaps a max capacity of like 30? If you come early or the table isn't ready yet - be prepared to wait outside - there is NO space inside for lingering. That said - we never felt rushed out of our table to make room."

"Although it’s quite an experience (and fun) to eat here, we ran into an unexpected problem with the menu -- which was ironic for vegetarians. Two of the people in our party could not eat fresh cilantro (a/k/a coriander), which was in the Beans entrée, as well as in several salad portions of other dishes. Nor could these dishes evidently be prepared without cilantro (not even as a vegan alternative). Where you offer only four entree selections, should you not be prepared with alternative sauces for customers who cannot eat fresh cilantro? Both ended up ordering the Corn entree that they did not especially want and found to be bland. On the other hand, the Onion appetizer, Popcorn Pudding and the wine list were all excellent."

"Terrifically inventive food. A melange of flavors and textures. It really delivers and you never miss the taste of meat. The space is tight but warm and intimate. It was a perfect respite from the cold of the evening on which my party and I went there. The wine list is short but there seems to be something for everyone and our bottle of red was well-paired with the meal."

"My wife and I have been in the high end food business for over 30 years and this was the fifth time we have dined here in the last couple of years, if our schedule allowed us to make it to dinner at 5:30 we would be there once a week. My wife is a vegetarian and I am a life long and committed carnivore yet this is still my favorite dining experience in NYC. It amazes me that there is not one thing I have ever had there that could have been improved with the addition of a meat component and for me that is unheard of. Kudos to Amanda and her staff!"

"I came across Amanda Cohen's cookbook a few months ago: a fascinating account of starting a restaurant and keeping it running in a very expressive graphic novel format, with recipes, which motivated our night out. The restaurant itself did not disappoint. Each dish we tried was excellent. The onion appetizer had a great smoky flavor, the parsnip pillows I had were light and flavorful with a creamy, sweet and tangy sauce. My dining partner's beans were the only misstep, as the slab of tofu was perhaps too heavy and not well enough integrated into the dish. We hope too, that Ms Cohen's success means she can expand her space! We were very happy though, with the experience overall."

"The quality of the food is excellent and the flavours are really good, but it was too rich for my palate. The waitress was great, really attentive, knowledgable and friendly. The main issue with this place is that it is really small and you are far too close to your fellow diners - getting in and out of the wall-side seat is definitely a challenge!"

"The size of the place is a reflection of the intimacy of the food & service, it's well-meaning and sincere. But I had hoped for just a bit more based on the insanely great reviews. I like vegetables but these were almost all fried in some manner, it got a bit tedious. Overall though, it was quite tasty and interesting. Good. And I love a vegetable restaurant. Just not the best thing I've ever eaten. This won't make you swear off all other restaurants but if I had a bunch of money, I'd eat here regularly. Service was New York surly…"

"Great experience on Valentine Day. Had not been here before and was worried it was so small. The staff was very knowledgable and there was a fun vibe in the room. Had the hush puppies (good way to start), the Cabbage Salad (very inventive), the Cauliflower and Waffles (my girlfriend ate most of mine), and the ice cream bar which was some of the best ice cream I've had. I'm not vegetarian but my girlfriend is and I will definitely be back."

"The food was alright but not at these prices. The jalapeno hush puppies are a variant of a common south Indian snack called vadey, and frankly the rest of the dishes we had were poor imitations of ethnic dishes like vege coconut curry. Maybe we're used to the real thing, so this overpriced fusion felt like a bit of a con. Service was much better than at say your regular Chinatown or curry hill dive, but we're more into food than service."

"At first, attitude expressed by the staff both over the phone and in person was a concern and the environment felt a bit uncomfortable (very close to other patrons/awkward silence). However the menu items proved to be playful and bright with clean, smart platings.. knowledgable staff.. Exciting concept brilliantly & wonderfully executed. Looking forward to the spring menu!
*I would suggest better lighting, in order to see and truly appreciate the styling and colors."

"Very enjoyable food and wine. service was mediocre and space was small cramped and not relaxing. We were reached over many times during our meal for wine glasses to be stored and taken. The food though unique and flavorful was not worth the unrelaxed dining atmosphere. Do they do take out?"
