"What a great experience! I am rarely rendered speechless, but the rack of lamb shut my mouth. The food was perfectly cooked, the brussel sprouts were fantastic, and the raspberry bengiets were delicious. While Th service wasn't gushing or bubbly, our server was on the spot and efficieant. She let us enjoy our meal and was knowledgable about the menu. Thank you for a great experience!"

"Alexandra needs to refocus on the food and it's preparattion... To overcook the food is not attention to detail. Everything from appitizer to dessert was overlooked and not prepared correctly. A beautiful venue with nothing inside!"

"This was my first time dining at Butter - and it was fabulous. The staff were extremely friendly and helpful. The space and decor are stunning, yet still warm and inviting. And the food was fantastic. The foie gras was as good, if not better, than any I've ever had, and the pork porterhouse was tender and delicious. They have an extensive wine list which should suit every taste (and pocketbook). I would definitely recommend Butter for any occasion."

"Nice space, though looking tired. Water stained walls, large dried-out floral arrangements in cloudy water. Food is "good", not world class. Bar has the ambiance and lighting of a Howard Johnson's, circa 1970. Lastly, the service is outrageously bad to non-existent. Oddly, there a are a lot of people standing around doing NOTHING. A rather severe-looking woman, who I suppose is the boss-lady, roams around glaring at staff and customers. The waiter was way over his head....I poured the wine all evening in his long absences, had to ask passerbys to clear used glasses and plates....you get the picture. Butter has seen its day. P.S., take your BOSE noise blockers. Acoustics of a bowling alley."

"First of all, the staff was very friendly. Butter Cheff's should consider putting less garnish on their meat dishes. I had the Lamb. It was very good after setting aside all the sauce, onions, roasted tomatoes and more on top of it, otherwise, it tasted superb. The meat was tender and it was perfectly cooked. It took 20 minutes for my Malbec to arrive to the table. We ordered Sambuca after dessert and they only had one Snifter, so my boyfriend "Birthday Boy" had to drink his in a whiskey glass. I was not impress!!"

"We hit up Butter on what turned out to be a quiet evening due to a blizzard, and thoroughly enjoyed the evening. The food was delicious (the best chicken I have had in a long time), the drinks tasty & strong, and the vibe was cool and energetic. Our waiter recommended the Sticky Date pudding for dessert and it was yummy as promised. I expected there to be more of a bar scene, but imagine it's busier when there's less snowfall. The dining room was rather loud (I read in another review to request a table upstairs, and I would second that motion if you don't fancy dining in the club), but for us the music was great. All around a great evening, when we left they were closing up for the night."

"It was such a great dining experience!
The Service was Excellent! Everyone was so attentive of everything, and made the night so enjoyable.
The food was to die for! Had the Swordfish Special. Deliciousness.
The wine list was also very well picked, with decent prices, and a great selections.
We finished the night at the bar, and I loved the Butter Martini!

Cannot wait to go back! :)"

"Didn't feel the love from our server which makes or breaks a meal. Appetizers very good, entrees disappointing. When we told our server, after a round of cocktails, that we were looking for a bottle of red UNDER $50 he suggested a $68 and a $58 bottle. Not cool and not appreciated. When we pursued a cheaper bottle he was not happy or helpful. We had emailed the chef beforehand regarding our vegetarian guest and although we had an enthusiastic and personal response from him, there was no follow-through upon our arrival regarding any special dish for him."

"Food is decent, but the service is terrible. There's a saying that you know it's good service when the only thing you need to ask for throughout the meal is the check. Butter did the exact opposite; we had to ask for everything (multiple times for certain requests) except for the check. They were so rude that they dropped the check on our table and asked for our chair while some of us were still drinking our coffee."

"I don't understand what all the hype is about this restaurant. The food was okay. I thought the appetizers were better than our main entrees. The ambiance was great. "If you have the opportunity to dine at butter, I would reccomend requesting a table in the main dining room, My wife and I were seated in the downstairs lounge area and were seated at a cramped table practically on top of the couple seated next to us. There's also a DJ down there spinning records, which is fine if thats what you're looking for in a night out. Overall I enjoyed BUTTER, my meal was excellent and the service was very attentive, I would go back again but request to sit upstairs..."

"We had a lovely dinner at Butter. The waitstaff was knowledgeable and attentive without smothering. We tried several items off the regular menu and some specials too and we were pleased with both. My only concern was being seated downstairs, but that turned out to have a cool easy vibe. On my next visit I plan to try the tasting menu (chef's choice) and request seating in the upstairs dining area. At the end of the night I was still curious about both."

"The Music was SO loud that I couldnt think. We asked the waitress to lower it and nothing was done. Finally a fellow diner leaned over the DJ booth to lower the music. The waitress forgot our sparkling water (I had to ask her twice) and never bused our table. She never came to check on us. It took 35 mins for our appitizer to come and an hour after that for our meals. She never once checked in with us until I flagged her down and she told me the kicthen was running behind. The food was great though. Our reservations were for 6:30 and we left at 9:20. That was way too long for our food to come. I was unhappy with this."

"Have previously had a good dining experience at Butter but this time, our waiter was not very attentive and our food was late. Explained that we had theater tickets but even though arriving with plenty of time, the food still arrived 10 minutes before we had to leave, so we had to rush through our meals. "I went to Butter on a Saturday night and had an early reservation (6:00) so it wasn't too busy but other people were there. The food was EXCELLENT! We had a raw salmon appetizer which was to die for. For our entrees, we had a fillet and a veal chop, both cooked very very well and tasted fantastic! Overall, Butter offers a wonderful dining experience and we will be sure to visit again."

"Butter is a lush fine dining lair. For the most part, everything was amazing. Pros: the steak w/ crimini mushrooms and balsamic reduction was impeccably cooked, the service was amazing, and the ambiance is cozy and inviting. Decent tuna tartare, fantastic trotters. Cons: cornbread served in place of French bread. The cornbread was dense, cakey, and overly sweet. Sometimes, the classics are better. The lobster entree was tasty but had far too much shell and membrane in the mix making the dish quite awkward to eat. Butter's downstairs presented a possibly opportunity in the nightlife department with an intimate little lounge area. Without a doubt, Butter would be worth a second visit."

"There was a wait of 25 minutes as the restuarant was running behind schedule. One of the signature drinks was to have Patrone but I received a lesser quality Tequila. The wait staff was unattentive. Therefore, I left a very small tip. The real saving grace was the food."

"My girlfriend and I went to Butter for Valentine's Day and it was one of the best dining experiences we have had. Gretchen, our precious server, was amazing. She was accommodating and attentive. "The ambiance and interior design was beautiful. We were there for restaurant week, but the waiter remained outstanding and did not rush us at all. It was a Monday night, however, so the restaurant was relatively quiet and not too crowded, noisy, or clublike (mentioned in other reviews). We sat upstairs which was lovely. The bar area was downstairs. The appetizers were tasty (shrimp and butternut squash soup), and entrees were very delicious (duck confit, and spare ribs). The dessert was terribly disappointing. I am a huge dessert fan, and I left the chocolate cake half eaten when we finished. My boyfriend also left his banana topped rice pudding half eaten. Not very moist, sweet, or special. Overall, a great night, but skip dessert."

"Good restaurant. Valentines menu was a gift overpriced for what we recieved. 80$ pp makes more sense than 150$ front of house was not good. Water remain unfilled, Champagne was forgotten until reminded, Time between dishes were long.Ambience was loosely decorated for valentines day and looked a bit cheesy"

"The wait staff was okay, bussers were great and the waiter that actually took our table and stayed with us was great. some of the patrons were on the snooty side, but most were fine. Wonderful looking place. Regular menu not so extensive, I would not bring a large group here, not enough choices. The restaurant week menu seemed better than normal menu. The taste of the food was great! It is a bit cramped so, even for two it can be a bit uncomfortable. Not really suited(upstairs) for parties over 6."

"I went for restaurant week. The appetizers were pretty good, but the entrees (short ribs & duck confit) i found were nothing outstanding and actually on the salty side for me. I ordered a cocktail and the waiter warned me that it would be very sweet which i like but it ended up tasty salty ! the desserts were nothing special too.. & also the hostesses & our waiter didn't smile and weren't super friendly. All in all it was a meh experience. good thing i tried this place out for restaurant week and not at full price. definately expected better from a $$$$ restaurant. but the one thing i must give to them is that the decor & ambiance was very nice"

"Our restaurant week prix fixe meals were reasonable portions, and the appetizers and entrees were very good. The dessert, however, was horrible--inedible--and two of us sent ours back. The banana and rice pudding concoction, which was bitter and crunchy, not sweet and creamy as expected, left such a bad taste that we did not request another option. An unfortunate way to end an otherwise delicious meal. The downstairs area where we were seated was lively, but the decor was nothing special. If I were to return I would request to sit upstairs. Our server was pleasant and helpful, and his overall service was spot-on."

"Went for Restaurant week. I forgot this was a hipster place but the atmosphere is nice. The bread basket was good (esp. the cornbread). I had the shrimp appetizer. I didn't care for it. My husband had soup which was good. I had the duck confit which was tasty but a little to sweet for me. For desert I had the rice pudding and ice cream which was delicious. Our waiter was nice and very accomodating. Overall nice place to go with friends but not a romantic spot. We saw Russell Simmons as we were leaving."

"We dined with two friends at Butter during Restaurant Week, and couldn't have been more delighted. The $35 dinner sampled the best of the regular menu, and the portions were as substantial as anything you would get for conventional pricing. The butternut squash soup was fabulous, and we loved the little bowl of popcorn for sprinkling. What a delightful and yummy combination! The short ribs were succulent, tender, and beautifully sauced, served with purple potatoes. My partner's salmon was moist and delicious and our friend's duck confit was rich and savory. Dessert provided the only misstep. I ordered the carmelized bananas, expecting a variation on Bananas Foster, but they were simply sliced bananas with caramel sauce. Overall: solid A."

"I was very disappointed with Butter this past weekend. We had such high hopes for dining there. We went during restaurant week and part of me is wondering if they decided to slack for that reason alone. Service was horrible, our waitress never came by to see how we were doing and how the food was. As for the food, some of it was great and other portions were just okay. I don't think we plan on returning again...restaurant week is supposed to provide an insight and sampling into different places around NYC and this one left us with a not so wonderful experience."

"The food was rather good, but our bottle of wine did not arrive until after the entree was served and we had to ask for the bottle to be brought. Overall the service was shoddy, too much time between courses and seemingly no respect or love for the food and wine served. Possibly our waiter had too many tables, but this is no excuse. A busy restaurant should know and schedule as many waiters as necessary to not have the mishaps that we experienced. No apologies or even recognition that anything was wrong from our waiter was the kicker. Seemed as if this was how service ran as usual."

"I dined at Butter at the end of January, and me and my girls had a great time. The food was great, the waiter was nice. The only thing we had to complain about was the wait for food. We were eating pretty late (around 10pm on a Thursday night) and it took at least 45 minutes between each course, when we had clearly been done for over half an hour. Besides that, it's was great food (limited menu, though), a pretty & stylish environment, and helpful staff. I'd go back - and go to the club next time, too."

"Given the reputation of Chef Guarnaschelli I expected excellence. The food was good, but the service was poor. Our empty entree plates sat on our table for approximately 25 minutes and our water glasses remained empty throughout the entree portion of our lunch. The Birch Room was full and the wait staff seemed adequate in number, but not much attention given to the diners. Of course, it was during restaurant week, but the service was so poor that I defintely will not return nor will I recommend Butter to any of my colleagues, friends or neighbors. Certainly not up to the standards Chef Guarnaschelli would demand of others."

"I thought Butter was alright. My friend and I ordered from the Restaurant Week menu. The Florida shrimp appetizer was pretty good. The tables were a bit too close together for my taste, otherwise the ambience was nice. When I was looking at the pictures of the restaurant, the website gave the illusion that the trees along the back wall were real. When we got there and saw the "forest" was a lighted backdrop it was a little disappointing and somewhat of an eyesore. Would not go back."

"I went to Butter for Restaurant Week and found it delightful, despite some reviews which indicated bad service; to the contrary, our waitress was sweet, patient, and eager to please. The upstairs room is quite beautiful, although pretty noisy. Not sure about the downstairs room. My dinner (charcuterie platter, short ribs with pomegranate, and cheese plate) was excellent. "My dining experience at Butter was simply delightful :) I was a little bit surprised of its location because I found that I live really close to it. Going inside, it was beautiful and I couldn't believe it existed. The service was pleasant and quick. My friend and I had no problems with anything, and the food came right away. All the courses were delicious (I had the fish of the day, and the creme caramel for dessert - best shortbread ever), and the whole thing was just nice. Sounds too good to be true, but it actually was that good."

"Went for Restaurant Week and sat downstairs, which was a bit too dark and depressing. Service was good...waiter and busboys were attentive but not overbearing. Food was really just ok...shrimp appetizer was a bit overcooked and the flavor profile was a bit off (spicy, but lacking a sweet component to counteract the spice). Duck confit was nice, but by no means earth-shattering. Dessert (had the white chocolate custard and my date's dark chocolate cake) was borderline horrific. All in all, a very average meal."

"One should have high expectations for the food of Alexandra Guarnaschelli, a network TV celebrity chef and harsh judge of other chefs. The food was less than exciting, extremely overpriced, and the size of the portions is...well...insulting. The charcuterie plate was described in detail featuring duck mortadella and venison salami. The size of the one evident piece of meat was see-through thin and slightly larger than a quarter. The ravioli entree featured four shriveled flat small ravioli. The wine list is extremely over-priced with unusual mark-ups on ordinary wines. Overall, a great disappointment. This place is not at all a decent value for the price point, and the mediocre level of gourmet quality certainly doesn't warrant it."

"My boyfriend and I went for restaurant week and really enjoyed the menu they offered. The only negative aspect about our experience was our horrible waiter. He was very inattentive, often took over 20-30 minutes to come back with a request. He also mixed up my boyfriend's dessert order which took about 30-40 minutes to come out after the table had been cleared. However, after observation from the other waiters on the floor, I would like to believe that we just had the worst waiter at the restaurant because the rest seemed to be attentive to their designated tables. Overall, we had a good experience. I would go back again, but under the condition I never get seated with that waiter again."

"I enjoyed the food at Butter and the service was gracious, though a bit slow. However, we were sat downstairs in what had clearly been designated the "Restaurant Week" section. I understand that Butter doesn't make as much money on Restaurant Week reservations, but I also think the mark of a truly stellar restaurant is one that treats all its customers the same, whether they're celebrities, teenagers on a first date, or Restaurant Week locals checking out a neighborhood spot that would otherwise be too pricey. And who knows? I could've been a critic!

Oh, and they played hiphop and R&B all through dinner, which I thought was a weird choice for fine dining."

"Came here for Winter Restaurant week 2010 for lunch. The food here was delicious. I ordered the Roasted Mussels. Savory and a little bit creamy. (Maybe it's from all that Butter? lol) My friend and the Veal Shanks. I tried a little piece of that and it was nice and tender. Felt like I was eating pulled pork. As far as the dessert goes... I had the fruit and cheese plate. One of the cheeses had a strong taste to it. Wasn't fond of that. everything else on the plate was fine. "I was being seated in the basement, which has no window with poor ventilation. Music was way too loud we could barely hear each other. Service was very slow. "We dined for RW and had a nice enough time. We made early reservations to avoid a RW rush and were seated right away. Both of our cocktails were terrible and I sent mine back because I could barely swallow a sip. I ordered a different cocktail which was good, nothing more, nothing less. For $14 a drink, you would think the drinks would be stellar. The food was pretty good, but I was disappointed in the dessert. We've had dinner at Butter before and the food was amazing so we felt a bit let down this time. On the flip side, the server was great. He was very attentive, knowledgeable, and pleasant. "The wait staff hovered a bit too much and the main server bordered on obsequiousness. Our bread was whisked away twice without asking and we had to ask for it back to mop up rthe delicious sauces. The runners/bussers were always looking for something to take away often when we would have liked to be left alone. "Had this been my first visit to Butter, it would have been my last! I have been many times and have always had a great experience so I can overlook yesterday. When we were seated we asked if we could be out in under an hour and were told absolutely.... after waiting 20 minutes for appetizers to arrive, my shrimp ravioli was totally cold inside. Lunch took even longer to get there and we even asked for our dessert to come out while we were still eating our lunch...still trying to figure out why creme caramel and a cheese tray took so long....my friend ended up having to leave and I had to search for a busboy to beg for some bread for the cheese tray. No one asked if everything was okay in between.Service was lackluster to say the least"

"Our reservation was at 9:30 and we got there on time. Our table was not ready until 10:30. I understand these things can happen but the staff acted like this was the hippest place to be and was not apologetic. They would not give us updates and would not be honest about the wait. The drinks we had at the bar while waiting were not good. In the end, we ordered another drink and the bartender kept us waiting to pay while our table was ready for 10 minutes. They would not let us transfer the tab to our table - I was really annoyed about that. Very disorganized and not well run. The dance area after was super crowded and full or young bridge and tunnel crowd. Overall - really not worth it."

"This review is for the downstairs dining area. Try to get a table upstairs. Even with a reservation, unless you specifically ask for it or meet some special case, we were told it would be a 45 minute wait beyond our original 9:00 reservation. The music was great but it was too loud for dining conversation. I had to reach across the table to make my Wife hear what I was saying but had to do it at a volume to also not disturb the people sitting beside us in a row of tables for 2. I would cut it back at least 25%. Great lobster, friendly service and cheaper than expected with drinks and mussels appetizers."

"Unfortunately it appeared that to increase their revenue this restaurant has decided to bus in large noisy groups of tourists for dinner. We only saw the waiter 3 times during the entire meal (he had perfected the technique of passing the table without making eye contact), however the bus staff tried very hard to make up for this. We tried many dishes but only one was worth wading through. Most were gravely wanting. The wine list, which the wait staff didn't seem to have a clue about, was severely wanting and very over priced.

We eat out at least four times a week at various restaurants not only in Manhattan but many of the outer bourghs and New Jersy as well and Butter is one restaurant that we would definitely recommend you pass on-"

"We went to Butter after reading all the glowing reviews on OpenTable. We weren't that impressed. I found the nuts on the appetizer of silky salmon out of place and the green herb tasteless and hard to chew. "The food was cooked perfectly with just the right portions. I ordered the Duck Breast and my guest ordered the Chicken. The duck was cooked with the right amount of flavor and fat and was not tough or gamey. My guest mentioned the chicken was the best she had ever eaten. With a 3 course meal, I left feeling satisfied and not overly full. A perfect place to eat where you can drink afterwords. It was priced right; I would eat there again."

"Great service, outstanding food, and perfect ambiance. My family and I ate there for the holidays and as I recall they said that the lobster dish was the best they have ever had. We had the Caesar salad which was absolutely delicious. The dressing was out of this world. We also had the veal croquettes which were equally as delicious. The lobster was by far my family's favorite. Even though I don't personally love lobster (I prefer steak over lobster), Butter's lobster was pretty addictive for me. The filet steak was very very tasty as well. The service was perfect and the food came out in a timely manner - not too fast and not too slow. A must for any food lover."

"Right across the street from Blue Man Group which I was taking my 10 yr-old daughter and my mother to see. We had pasta appetizer. Duck breast, ravioli, and striped bass entree's. All 3 of us thought it was a home run. We are not "foodies" because we live in a small town and rarely get to nice restaurants; however, we spend time watching food network and cooking great food at home. We all loved this experience and I appreciated the convenience to the show. Of note, Chef Alex of Alex's Day Off came out to talk to one of the young kids who was there and knew her from the show. I thought that was great."

"The food was amazing and the service was impeccable. We had tickets to the blue man group across the street and were running a bit late. The maître d’ was extremely nice and gave us some quick apps and booked us reservations for after the show. When we came back we were upgraded to a booth and since we wanted the tasting (but it takes 3 hours), the maître d’ gave us his own version which was amazing. He paired it with wine in our price range and everything that came out was delicious. On top of all this great service,the waitress was very friendly and accomodating. She even sparked up some good conversation. All and all, my GF and I were very impressed and would recommend Butter to anyone."

"I was happy to finally go to Butter recently. We had a great experience, the food was delicious (albeit heavy, beware), the service was friendly and informative, and the wine selection was great as well. The wild boar appetizer was fantastic, as were the scallops and the lamb entree; the lobster was a little tough. The ambiance was...interesting. When I read some recent reviews, there were many mentions of the show Gossip Girl, we were a bit weary and nearly canceled. However, if you have the same fears, do not let them deter you. Despite the couple of groups of 20-something ladies living out the their gossip girl fantasies, it's still a solid choice. The majority of the patrons did seem to be there for the food."

"The food itself was EXCELLENT! Overall, a lovely experience with a couple of service hiccups. We were first to arrived slightly early for a 5:30 table and wished the bar had been open. The maitre'd escorted 3 other tables first. Finally, from his podium called our name(even though we were now alone in the gallery). He made up for it by indeed giving us a lovely table as promised. Our waiter was attentive without being overbearing, and overall gave us excellent service. However, after leaving the wine list, he failed to follow up & take the order. By the time he came back to us, the entree had been served, so we skipped the wine. In spite of these 2 examples, the experience was excellent."

"The tables are positioned very close together, so it is difficult to have a quiet conversation. The restaurant must realize this because they seem to have over-compensated by playing the music much, MUCH too loud. In trying to shout over the music, adjacent tables are sure to hear your conversation.

Either the waiter or the bartender mixed/delivered the wrong drink; when I mentioned this to another staff member, and asked to send our waiter over, it was more than 10 minutes before the waiter reappeared... The wine list was good, but nothing to really distinguish the restaurant from other expensive places.

The food was excellent, though, and would incent me to try the place again to find out if this was just a "bad night"."

"Let me start by saying that the restaurant was gorgeous and the food was amazing and perfectly prepared. Our waitress, however, was terrible. We found out about the dinner specials after we had already ordered by listening to another waiter tell an adjacent table. She never asked us if we would like a drink while we looked at our menus. When I finished my glass of wine she didn't ask if I would like another..instead she whisked away my empty glass as she ran by our table. I should mention that we were a table of 5 women and we had two 13 year old girls with us. I have been in the food service industry before and this kind of rushed, inattentive service ruined what could have been a memorable dining experience."

"Went the day before thanksgiving...pretty good dinner crowd given the time we were there.

Our server had 9 tables (that I counted) and still gave excellent service, although appeared at times slightly overwhelmed...

I felt bad for the poor kid because the people at the table next to us were total jerks, who verbally abused him for with almost no cause. Even despite the abuse, the guy kept a smile on his face, and remained professional. I shook his hand on the way out.

The food was very good, the pasta app stood out as being excellent...
