"Not a big fan of a hostess in a nearly empty restaurant suggesting that two of us wait at the bar until our other two guests arrived (seems like a ploy to boost the bar bill), and that should have been a clue as to what the experience would be like. The whole experience was expensive and disappointing. The service was uneven, the waitstaff uninformed and reluctant to deviate from some playbook ("The chef doesn't like us to take an appetizer order until you're also ready to order your entrees . . . it will cause delays"), and two of the three bottles of wine I tried to order were not stocked. The food was only okay, and all in all I felt like Butter is a place with an absent celebrity chef, not a place to celebrate a b'day. Chop it."

"There are many better restaurants in NYC at this price point. Some dishes were good others were overcooked and loaded with salt and sugar (to the point of not tasting the food). That said, the space is beautiful and I would certainly stop in again for a cocktail at the bar or lounge."

"I knew when I made Reservations that it was going to be a great dining experience. The food was fantastic and the service was very good. I felt pampered the whole time. I highly recommend Butter for a Special Occasion or a romantic night out. The lighting and decor was very suttle and it made it feel romantic. I would not go there with children as the menu is very adult and I like that because I got to enjoy my dinner. Not to offend people with children, but it seemed very adult there."

"Octopus appetizer was room temperature. Had expected it to be warm. For my entree I ordered the Pork Milanese. While it was very tasty, I didn't expect to the pork to be so thin and the breading to overpower the meat.
My server was very informative and friendly. Atmosphere was lovely. Overall it was a nice dining experience just a little below my expectations."

"Our experience at Butter was excellent. The service was very good and the food was delicious. Only a couple of quibbles: one is that the plate that my octopus came on was lipless and the sauce spilled onto the dining cloth as I ate, which was unsightly during the rest of the meal. The second was that we decided to have a drink at the bar before dinner, since we got there early and the maitre de had us settle up at the bar before going to the table. The restaurant isn't that big, I've been in far bigger that allowed one to transfer the tab from the bar to the table.

Other than that the Foie Gras was delicious, as was the Octopus. The rosemary biscuit bread was to die for. The fillet of beef I had was perfectly done. Excellent."

"Visiting from VT, we came because we had heard of Butter and wanted a special evening out in NYC for mom, dad, and teen daughter. We loved the ambience, service was friendly and efficient. We considered the tasting menu but decided against it, opting to choose from the menu ourselves and sharing vs. putting the chef in the driver's seat. The couple seated next to us chose the tasting menu and definitely sampled things that were not on the menu.

A few hits and misses. Loved the wild salmon and cavatappi pasta appetizers. The sea bass w/romesco sauce was tasty, but there was an insane amount of romesco sauce on my plate. The pork milanese was flavorful, but very heavy. Raspberry beignets to die for.

"Very disappointing. The restaurant wasn't busy, but the service was terrible. We had to find our waiter to order apps, then dinner, then a refill of wine, then the check. Moreover, the waiter asked if we would like some dessert or coffee after our apps (before our entrees were served!). He forgot to order our meals, thus we had to wait for our meal for far too long, and we were a group of six. I had the ravioli, which was mushy and flavorless.

Being someone working in the television industry and entertaining often, I was embarraased to have brought a group here and do not recommend it to others."

"On the surface it looks appealing, but the ground floor is horrible. A low diner-style divide separated us from a very loud couple who yelled at teach other just to be heard over the noise in the restaurant. By 10pm the hostesses took retreat to the quieter front of the entry to escape the noise. The bartender was incompetently slow and overwhelmed when there were few orders to be made. Our waiter tried to please but the kitchen couldn't keep up with demand. Why they were busy, I'll never understand. The food was just okay. The grilled frois gras was delicious, but not much else. We skipped desert so we could leave. The patrons were the oddest mix of people. Butter is not for foodies... Best for Food Network wannabes."

"Our experience at Butter exceeded our already high expectations. The decor was striking-modern, but soothing. My octopus appetizer was very tender with just enough heat from the aleppo pepper & chilies and a texture & flavor burst from the roe. The snapper was very crisp, but perfectly moist and soft inside-love the beet vinagrette! The Blood Orange Creme Brulee' was the best any of us have had. All of our group completely enjoyed their meal-the adverturous and not-so-adventurous! I would love to work my way through the menu!"

"I have never reviewed a restaurant, but been in nyc for a long time and dine out a lot however, have never gone here. Went for reasons of family wanting to try and it was really disappointing. Quality of ingredients was good. But the food was so incredibly salty I could barely finish it. It was burning my mouth it was so bad. Scallops and prime filet of beef both extremely salty I can't even describe. Never in my life/experience at nice restaurants has this happened. Not really "Iron Chef" quality I would say, pretty shocking that salt and peppering 101 was a bust at a place this expensive. Never will go back."

"Butter was "melt in your mouth" delicious!!! The restaurant was beautiful inside. We loved every bite of our wonderful dinner! We both had the most sensational, succulent lamb chops with glazed carrots and parsnips. We started with the tastiest appetizer of mushroom and ricotta crostada and a lovely Caesar salad. It was all "love at first bite.""

"We had dinner for 4 at Butter. The appetizers were wonderful. Most of the entrees were excellent. The chicken with white beans was just okay. However, the greens on top were so tough that I couldn't cut or chew them and nearly choked trying to eat the first bite. After I discarded the greens, the chicken was okay. All other entrees were excellent (fish, a giant steak, and the ravioli). Desserts were phenomenal (chocolate semifredo and beignets)."

"The food was delicious. We had an 8:00 reservation, checked in at 8:05 and were seated around 8:15...not too bad for a Saturday night. If I had to pick something negative, I would have to point out the noise. I wish it was just a tiny bit quieter...that is me being uber picky, though. I will be back."

"I was soooo excited to go to this restaurant. When I arrived in NYC, our plans had changed and Butter was most cooperative in assisting with the change of reservations. The meal started out with a bang - fantastic food, great service - very attentive. However, after the entrees were served - service went out the window. It's like they forgot about us. There was no follow up. After waiting for at least 30 minutes after we were done with our entrees, we had to ask for the check. No follow up for coffee, dessert, nothing. So although the food was fantastic, with the poor service, it was really a disappointment."

"We had a 30 year reunion of sorts where 4 girlfriends from high school met in New York City. This was recommended to us by someone who wants to go there themselves but has never been. We had a wonderful time. The food and drinks were very good. The waiter was awesome as was the ambiance. I would recommend it."
