Owned by Chef Charles Tutino and his wife, Jane Witkin, Verjus serves contemporary French/New American cuisine in a stylish, understated dining room decorated with works by local artists. The menu changes daily and seasonally, taking advantage of local markets and direct sourcing whenever possible. Verjus has a full bar and a list of excellent wines, primarily French and American, at surprisingly low prices. Verjus also features an extensive line of single malt scotches.
"We went there for Mother's Day, and normally have low expectations of good restaurants for that day. When I called for directions, i was told there was no different menu for Mother's Day, and the pricing was the same - it was. The food was outstanding - we had the escargot appetizer and the Beef a la Bourguignonne Verjus Style as a main course. Normally, when you got to a French restaurant, you are concerned about portion sizes. That is not a problem at Verjus. Th appetizer could have easily been shared, except I was glad I didn't - it was that good. The main course was amazing - did not need a knife to cut the beef, and my wife had leftovers. The only problem is that we were so full we didn't have desert. Will definitely go back."

"You can always count on great food at Verjus. Spread the word for lunch as they are a bit too quiet. Don't let that worry you - the food is fantastic and it is reasonably priced. You can take your time to talk and relax over a great meal."

"This restaurant was overall good. It was very pricey and I didn't find that the food was out of this world. However, it's a good place for a first date (if you don't mind spending $200 (incl. appetizers, wine, dinner, dessert and tip). They did give us a $20 return credit since our bottle of (French) wine cost almost $50.
There are many other places that are better so, only go if you are bored and want to try it out."

"This is a lovely neighborhood find. They have a unique set of cocktails, some featured wines which were very good and the food was fresh and well prepared. The amuse bouche was a pate filled nosh, the mushroom in pastry appetizer and salad were just right and the Idaho trout sweet and moist. Desserts were unique and just right as well.
We were there catching up with friends not seen for a while and although it was a busy Saturday night the staff did not rush us."

"One issue: as we entered the restaurant we asked to sit in the main dining room which was quite light due to the early hour. We were told that the main dining room was for 3's & 4's only. We were shuttled to an adjoining room. Afterwards we saw many 2's seated in the main dining room. Although dinner was quite pleasant, it left a negative feeling."

"As always, the food and service were both outstanding. The wait staff is unintrusive, but always very responsive to requests, and pays attention to the table. Every course we ordered was perfectly prepared and presented, and portions are ample."

"Excellent restaurant. We have never been disappointed with any food we have ordered. Entree is always perfectly cooked, sides are wonderful, service is always just right. We have dined here quite a few times and will continue to do so. Thank you."

"Went for a business lunch, so I cannot fully review it, for I didn't see the wine list, and I'd really need to also have dessert, but WOW the Salade Nicoise was the best I have ever had, and I've had plenty. Attentive service. Not one complaint. Good rolls, and super-strong house-brewed iced tea. The interior is not terrible, but pretty "meh." Needs an upgrade. Probably looks better in low lights."

"My wife and I have been to this restaurant several times for brunch and the food has always been excellent. The service is not bad but its not great (mostly young kids/adults on Sundays), nonetheless the service is good enough that we have returned several times."

"My husband brought me here for my 50th birthday. The atmosphere was romantic. The food was delicious and the presentation was lovely. Our server was highly knowledgable and recommended a perfect wine to compliment my meal. The owner is friendly and gracious. She appropriately checked in with us to make sure we were ok. We will definitely be going back."

"The food was superb but slow in arriving at the table. In a way it was ok because we were three ladies who wanted the time to talk in an unrushed way. However, our reservation was for 7:30 and we did not have the main food for an hour and a half. The appetizers came quickly which helped. The atmosphere is excellent and very quiet and the staff was very friendly and efficient in everything they could control."

"What a gift to have a great NYC restaurant so close to home! We have dined there a half dozen times and are never disappointed. Great food, civilized atmosphere in the tradition of Chanterelle. Never judge a book by its cover. Doesn't look like much from the outside and location, but is a true gem."

"The service was not at the level of the food and ambiance. Our server rarely checked on us and the time progression of the courses was very slow. It took over 15 minutes to get coffee refills at the end of the evening. Many tables came and left while we at our dinner not because of the timing. The server seemed disinterested in our table.
The service definitely made an otherwise nice meal less pleasurable."

"This restaurant seems to attract a rather senior crowd, possibly because of its prices. The food is really good and the service was caring but Considering the location and the decor, I think it would be much more popular if a mixed salad were included with the entrees if they are not willing/able to lower their prices."

"My husband and I had just returned from Paris and were looking for a neighborhood French restaurant with authentic food that we could enjoy. Verjus fit the bill perfectly. Every course including bread and dessert was delicious. I did not have the snails but our group was raving about them. My scallops with wild rice and haricots vert were excellent. Nice also that is a liquor list with many mixed drink and affordable wine options."

"Great food, friendly owners, unsophisticated but competent servers in a dated uninspired setting. The food is worth it....overall it could be really great....I suspect it once was. Would love for the environment to come closer to the incredible quality of the food. I would still recommend it ...rare to find food that good."

"Verjus has a the decor of a cheap hotel dining room and slow, unprofessional service -- which is quite a contrast with the food, which is nothing short of spectacular. In my view, the restaurant's accolade as a top NJ restaurant is not justified due to the issues with slow. unpolished service. It would be wonderful if they could achieve a redesign of the space or a move to a new location... would do wonders."

"I like to come to this restaurant because of their reliably great food and just as important, the room is quiet enough that you can actually hear what your friends are saying to you. You can have a real conversation. Unfortunately that just isn't the case in most restaurants today"
