Balla employs his research into artisan techniques such as sausage preparation, cheese making, pickling and preserving to produce those authentic homemade flavors. "The menu needed an introduction because it was essentially a tasting menu, but when we voiced our puzzlement over the lack of traditional labels , such as appetizer or entree, we got a pretentious description from the waitress of evolving depths of flavour. While the food was mostly quite tasty some items were nor great such as yhe potatoe flatbread. Also there was much difficulty getting a rez but the place was half empty when we were done. The lack of signage outside seemed to perfectly capture the "too special to be named" elitism this establishment exudes."

"I've heard a LOT of wonderful things about this restaurant - I've had their yummy baked goods, which was just as delicious on site. With out-of-town guests arriving, I eagerly made a reservation a month in advance. I should have done my research ahead of time, as the menu was a bit inaccessible and snooty for my guests who couldn't figure out what was what and ended up ordering $12 yogurt with granola. Although I am a bit more familiar with variety of cuisines, I can't really tell you what I ate except it had a lot of green things on it. Was it good? Sure. Was it $17 good? No. There's a market for this type of restaurant, for sure, but with such richness of great (and cheap) foods in that area alone - I won't be going back again."

"I was disappointed about the fact that I missed it because it didn't have an obvious signage outside the building to let me know that it's Bar Tartine. Had to make a u-turn and drive back slowly so I could locate it. What I saw was a Valet Parking sign that has the $12 price (just like it said in your website) so I knew I was at the right place. The valet pointed to the restaurant but my friend and I still weren't sure because again, we couldn't find the name we were looking for. Secondly, your place did not have any WiFi available to customers. Nobody could give us a password to access it because it isn't accessible.I commend you for a great service, great ambience and good food. I just might not go back there again, though."

"Bar Tartine is a gem. The food is not the usual California Cuisine. It borrows from central European flavors and styles. The roasted potatoes were fabulous, as was the Fisherman's Stew. We liked the Kale, but wondered if it was our favorite way to eat Kale - so many options. And don't forget the bread - in a city with many choices, the best in my opinion. Service was very friendly. Can't wait to go back."

"We finally got around to dining at Bar Tartine. It's been on our list of must tries for some time, but we always seemed to go some place else. Frankly, while I enjoyed the meal it was not what I expected. I love that the chef takes risks by presenting an original approach with the mostly Eastern Europe-focused menu, but we found the choices limited and for sharing plates it just wasn't all that diverse. Overall a good but not great place. I would return but might have trouble talking my wife into it!"

"lot's of nice snacks but if you want protein and want to limit your bread intake this is not the place for you. this didn't really have an active kitchen in the sense that they were 'cooking'. most of the items are pickled and prepared in advance.
too few dinner items and too much bread. beef tartare was completely under seasoned and lacked balance of textures. (compare with Wayfare Tavern for your own edification)
drinks made of Soju were trying too hard to be something they weren't. the Soju would make a great component to an overall drink but not as the only component to a drink."

"Love the mason jar presentation of pickled vegetables - curried cauliflower was our favorite. Enjoyed the horseradish with asparagus, especially b/c the horseradish didn't destroy our tastebuds. Moved on to share the amazing roasted kale w/innovative dehydrated yogurt (!) crumbs and other goodies - I need to figure out how to make this at home. Salmon presentation was beautiful and the spaeztle was hearty without being overfilling, all delicious. Was expecting more of a Tartine Bakery dessert so ended up skipping that. Great friendly service."

"The menu is varied and a refreshing view on "vegetarian-friendly" (they happily opt out of injecting dishes with pseudo-meats), with dishes that celebrate kale, tahini, and cheeses. The service was spectacular and honest (when the desert menu came and we nervously whispered to one another that we'd prefer just popping over to Bi-Rite Creamery, our waitress - unable to help overhearing - supported our decision and noted that she would do the same) and the ambiance was lively without being deafening."

"My husband and I visited Bar Tartine while in San Fran on our honeymoon. We thoroughly enjoyed our experience. The food was incredible. Delicate flavors, well balanced, beautifully presented. We were so full after dinner that we could not order dessert. However, the waiter brought us two complementary glasses of sparking wine to celebrate our marriage. Friendly, delicious, and pleasing to every sense. If this restaurant is on your list, we highly recommend you try it."

"Bar Tartine is one of my favorite restaurants in the city. The menu is mostly made up of small plates that are very interesting and delicious and remarkably reasonably priced for the quality and ambiance. I particularly love the potato flatbread and smoked potatoes. The one disappointment is the wine list is really overpriced compared to the menu. The least expensive bottle of red is about $50 and is not very good. If the wine list had a couple of bottles in the $30 range, I would eagerly return to Bar Tartine many more times. Otherwise, it's a drag to feel like I cannot get wine I can enjoy for a price that fits the bill."

"As always, Tartine did not fail to perform for this evening's feast, a seven course extravaganza that left us breathless! It was my first time for the marrow/asparagus half sandwich, which was truly outstanding. The tripe dish that I had for the main was one of the best things I've ever tasted. Tartine scores very high on all esoteric scales, and for me once I experienced the quality of what goes on here at every level, other places in SF seem very shallow and low quality.

"We ate at Bar tartine as part of a west coast food finding expedition. The food was unlike any we have eaten in a long time (we are in the business-have two restaurants on the east coast.) The menu at a glance seemed simple enough, the execution blew us away. Cannot say enough about the food ~the server was informed, unpretentious and truly excited about what Tartine had to offer. A highlight of our trip which began in Portland Oregon."

"For brunch, two of us ordered the Reuben sandwich and two ordered the potato flat bread with fried egg, garlic and cheese. The Reuben was surprisingly spicy and good, but the potato flat bread was sublime. The lucky two who ordered this tasty treat moaned in gastronomic delight while simultaneously fighting off the forks of the two who didn't. We will be going back soon to order four potato flat breads with fried egg, garlic and cheese."

"I was a little skeptical about the eastern European cuisine, but was delighted by the various dishes we tried. Everything was incredibly flavorful and fresh.
Portion sizes are modest (even the entree portions). Between the two of us we split 2 small plates and 2 entrees and that was the perfect amount of food (for those with smaller appetites probably 2 + 1 would be fine). I wish they had more CA wines in their selection, as the Croatian wines were just so-so and it made it difficult to chose a wine to accompany the meal."

"I thought this was an attempt to make "old world" Hungarian food chic by cooking it in very rich recipes, serving it in very small amounts and charging very high prices. No cocktails either - wine was fair. We should have brought our own but the corkage fee was $20 and we had to pay $15 for parking. What a racket. In the Mission yet! I won't go back...nothing to get me back there. Waiter was polite but hardly spoke and never checked in with us on how things were or if we needed more of anything."

"I've recently been exploring SF restaurants and this is my favorite so far. Its interior is warm and yet spacious, the servers are casual yet attentive, the food is flat out amazing. We were all impressed with the blend of flavors -- we enjoyed every bite. The only criticism I can come up with was the wine list was short and way too expensive. We stuck with beer. I would come back to this restaurant, which is not something I say lightly because I know the many I haven't tried still are waiting to be tried! The Mission District has come alive for the evening, so stroll down Valencia further & catch an after-dinner drink at a local bar. It's happenin'!"
