Reminiscent of a Paris brasserie it is where old world charm meets the new. Warm and welcoming to New Haven's cafe society it is located across from Yale University old campus. The restaurant offers menu and ambiance in a casual elegant style. Always using the best ingredients of the moment, Union League Café's food combines French classical traditions with a more contemporary approach to flavors, textures and native ingredients. "The food is delicious, the staff is amazing and the atmosphere is wonderful! This is my favorite restaurant in New Haven which I frequent for special occassions, but also for girls' lunch and business meetings. I cannot speak highly of the food quality and staff appreciation! Definitely five stars from me!"

"Everything was beyond delicious. I cannot recommend the restaurant more to anyone. I was with my 14 year old daughter and the waiter did bring our main course WAY too quickly after the starters. I let him know and he brought me a lovely glass of wine on the house to complement the cheese course. I will go back next time we are in New Haven."

"Space is beautiful, but it seemed that management squeezed in too many tables so that we felt uncomfortably close to the tables next to us. The noise level was very high -- we were unable to carry on a conversation. Service was lackluster and slow. The food was good but not really special. Doesn't deserve the hype."

"My girlfriend and I decided to come to The Union League Cafe instead of our senior prom. We were ecstatic with the choice we made of coming here. The food was simply nothing less than perfection. Everything was absolutely flavorful and cooked perfectly. The service was highly professional and they did a fantastic job serving. Over all this was an amazing dining experience and plan to come back for my next special occasion."

"Best dining experience of my life! The food was exquisite, the service impeccable, and the ambiance rich with history. I couldn't have chosen a richer environment to show off New Haven to my out-of-town famIly. When I made the reservation online, I asked for a special table for three and mentioned that my family was driving from Maryland for the weekend. We were delighted to be seated by the window across from a gorgeous Yale University building. We fully enjoyed the dining experience and stayed for two hours at our spot as the sun set. I'll long remember the evening at Union League Cafe!"

"Food was very good, but over priced. $7 side orders is very excessive. Entrees are priced high but dish I had was good. Wine list is too highly priced and limited to high priced wines that don't warrant buying. No New Zealand sauvignon blancs. Noise level is too high. Requires some sound dampening wall/cieling materials. I would not recommend Union League cafe unless you want to pay high prices for food and wine to obtain pretty good food (that can be found equally elsewhere) and want a noisy environment such that civil conversation becomes difficult."

"I was underwhelmed with my experience at Union League Cafe. I went because it was Restaurant Week, but would definitely not return and would not recommend it to friends. The food was nothing above average and nothing on the menu was exciting. The New Haven dining scene is rapidly growing and Union League is going to have to work on its kitchen if it wants to keep a place at the top."

"At noon on Wednesday, we were led through the nearly empty room to a corner by the stained glass windows, where we gazed across Chapel to daffodils and flowering plum trees. As lunch progressed, the volume picked up and the room filled completely; but over the four hours we lingered talking, our conversation was never overwhelmed. The waitstaff was attentive yet patient with our slow pace. We started with bowls of creamy potato sorrel soup, the essence of Spring. Top-notch, mostly French, wine list. We had appetizers instead of entrees: crab cake topped with cress, and octopus with chick peas. Fresh homemade bread. Our waitperson recommended two delectable cheeses. Fabulous dessert and coffee. Altogether lovely, perfect, and memorable."

"This was by far one of the best dining experiences that I've had to date. The food was phenomenal and perfectly portioned, the wine choices immense and the service exceeded my expectations. Our server asked us at the beginning of our dining experience if it was a special occasion, and it was, and ended our dining experience by surprising my companion with truffles to celebrate her birthday. I will definitely go back next time I have a special date to celebrate."

"My only disappointment were the servings of vegetable that were MINISCULE. You needed a magnifying glass to see what was there. Yes I know that that is the style but this was extreme like they had run short. it seemed all I was eating was a plate of meat -very good meat but once the pairing of veg ran out it was lacking. We had a relatively early reservation too.
Vegetarian choices were somewhat repetitive between its and second course in that they used the same veggies . Ie: pea soup peas in risotto.
Dessert s excellent."

"Because we did not have a jacket (which was not noted or required)
we were seated behind a wall in a large empty room. The food was
good, not at the level of sophisticated cities, but good and well presented.

"Recommended as the "Best Place in New Haven"...which sounds like faint praise, indeed. But this is a first-class joint. Charming surroundings, professional service, though menu lacks innovation. That's okay....but watch out for "Duck Confit" starter: skinless below a potato crust. WHY?"

"Always a great dining experience - all four of us had a different meal - all impeccably prepared and delicious. Our server Brian was extremely helpful - knows the menu - the wine list - friendly and gracoius - and actually checked in with us with apologies when table wasn't quite ready - didn't mind as our wait at the bar was very enjoyable. We really need to go to ULC more!"

"Just the thing to rekindle romance (@24+ years). Even at lunch. My lunch was great, but my wife hit it out of the park with her menu choices. Maine Peekytoe Crab Appetizer in a cucumber avocado gazpacho was spring in a bowl. Or so we thought, until they delivered the most perfect dish or risotto ever. Primavera. A pastel green, rife with English peas, asparagus, a lemon confit, cheese, and pea tendrils. Spring on a plate. We were made to feel special, but comfortable. Who could want for more? Love."
