Kokkari Estiatorio
Kokkari (pronounced “Ko-Kar-ee”) is a small fishing village located on the islands of Samos in the Aegean Sea, whose name is derived from the small onions that were once produced in the nearby fields. Its fertile soil and Mediterranean climate translated into an abundance of fresh produce as well as treasured seafood and game. Legend tells that Kokkari is the site where Orion, a mighty hunter and a young man of gigantic stature and great beauty, fell in love with the daughter of the king of Chios. For the love of her, Orion forged the island for wild game and seafood to prepare elaborate banquets in celebration of their love. "We had a great meal. Especially loved the duck appetizer. The grilled sea bass was fresh and cooked perfectly with a great char flavor from the fire. The lamb shank was tender and braised perfectly. For desert, we enjoyed the lemon curd tarts with house made pistachio ice cream and a nice Madeira. Jeff, our server, was friendly and attentive without being intrusive or hovering. We had a great time and felt our evening was much fun and delivered value for the price."

"It was so nice to go out for a well prepared and presented dinner on Mother's Day in a quiet setting like we had at Kokkari. The wait staff was very attentive. Probably the only thing was a recommendation for one of the specials over what my daughter was prepared to order. It wasn't that it was not good, but it wasn't to her taste like the entree she was going to have. I can't fault anyone since we all have different likes. I really enjoy this restaurant for special occasions as it can become pricey with all of the delicious offerings."

"Overall I'm very disappointed, the waitress was very rude and scarce. The environment was very loud and not as quiet and romantic as I would have liked. Seating is terrible here, I was practically bumping elbows with the person at the table beside me. Id say this place is more ideal for a casual business outing rather than a date night. The food was decent and the portions were much larger than expected."

"Months in advance, I booked an 8-top for a birthday dinner.
3 days before, Kokkari called to confirm. I confirmed.
The day of, Kokkari called again - do I really have 8 people? Yes, I sure do.
Our entire party arrived 15 minutes early.
Yet 20 minutes *after* the reservation, we were still waiting. Only vague responses from staff. Then a party of ten came in ..and we saw staff prepping a table for them....shrugs for us.
It took some NYC-style elbowing on our part to get the host staff to seat our party prior to the 10-top. I'm not sure we'd have been seated otherwise.
Once seated everything was lovely. I'd go back for the food and ambiance. But having and reconfirming a res sometimes isn't enough to actually get a table!"

"The food at Kokkari is always spectacular. If you like Mediterranean food, this place can't be beat. The wine list is also extensive and includes a good variety of price ranges. The service was great -- our waitress was wonderful -- but we were seated near the door and we had to keep our coats on b/c of the periodic draft coming through. Otherwise, though, it was great."

"My sister and I went on the recommendation of a friend. The most memorial part of the meal was when I had to tell my sister to stop complaining about work and taste the baklava. She loved it and it trancended the previous conversation. It was stunning. For dinner we had the roasted pork and lamb shank over orzo. Lastly, our cocktails were to die for. Love, love Love this place."

"After some uneven experiences in the past, the chef and his team did a great job this time. We ordered old favorites, including the smelts, lamb riblets, and halibut, and were not disappointed. The wines by the glass were also well chosen. Overall, a very fine meal that made us look forward to returning again."

"Last night in San Fran my husband and I had dinner with my brother who works in the city. He had made the suggestion of Kokkari but has never eaten there, By the time we had finished appetizers he wondered why he hadn't. The duck and chicken were outstanding and the appetizer special fava beans was out of this world. I am a lover of rice pudding and this was one of the best. The meal was greatly complimented by the excellent Chablis.
Most interesting was the waiter who owned a property in Maine, where we are from. Small world and a wonderful ending to a great visit west."

"Kokkari is definitely one of the better restaurants in San Francisco. The food is top shelf! I love the lamb but got a chance to taste the oven roasted fish and it was to DIE FOR. The servers are very helpful in giving their opinions on what wine would best suit the dish. It's fairly hard to get a reservation, so you would at least need 2 weeks. WORTH IT!"

"The ambience was warm and luxurious, from the well-stocked wood bar to the huge fireplace with chickens and lamb roasting. Tables were set out with informal comfortable chairs as though you were in a small family dining room, even though the restaurant is quite large. The service staff were friendly and knowledgeable. "All the essentials for a memorable luncheon join to make the diner happy to be here: a warm welcome, sure and careful service, comfortable seating, and -- most important -- a menu that makes one want to eat his way through it, day after day, with dishes that taste as delicious at the table as they appeared on the carte. If the noise is a little higher on the scale than I would prefer, at least it's the noice of people having a good time together. I like this restaurant better each time I try it. "A restaurant is great when it is always consistent on not just its food, but also its service.
I have eaten at Kokkari at least ten times and its food and staff's service level has always met my expectations of:
great food = fresh, well prepared, and delicious
great service = an experienced staff that takes pride in providing excellent service, knows its menu, and is personable"

"Great food, wonderful staff and waiters, priced reasonably. The greek salad is hearty, the halibut is a favorite as is the chicken skewer. It's never too oily, always fresh. Portions bring me back."

"It was well reviewed place that we hit just to check out. The online menu looked great and the wine list looked magical, which actually tempted us. Being a huge fan of mediterranean food, we looked forward to a lot in Kokkari and yes, we were glad we went! It was gem. Jus loved the feta (The waiter kind to let us have big chunk of it when we told him that it was delicious). The lamb dishes are not to be missed either!"

"I took my friend here for her birthday and they were very sweet to offer us extra friendly services. My friend, coming from France, has particular taste for food and she loved this place. I highly recommend going to Kokkari. The food was fresh and the service evoked a great first experience at Kokkari. Will definitely go back.
My friend had the rotisserie, which was lamb on that particular day, and I had the chicken. I usually cannot stand the taste of lamb but it was phenomenal. The chicken was amazing and was cooked perfectly."
