More festive than a piñata stuffed with a mariachi band and twice as stylish, Calle Ocho’s lively crowd is amped up on Mojitos, Caipirinhas and Spanish wine or beer and shows no sign of slowing down. Those not willing or able to holler over the salsa music retire to the two small lounge areas to commiserate. The bar area is a prelude to their Nuevo Latino cuisine in the dining room that will knock your taste buds for a loop. "When in NYC I always take in a meal at Calle Ocho. Service is attentive and well informed because I guess most non Latins would need some help choosing from the menu. Food is delicious and quite an adventure. I bring corporate guests here and they are always charmed by the place.

"Loved the bread. Loved the ambiance - the dining room is set back and away from the bar and street and you feel a little transported out of Manhattan. The decorations must have been very beautiful when new but there some visible rust stains on the column shades. Try and get one of the 5 booths for 5 or 6 people if you like booths and more elbow room."

"Definitely a must go! This is my second time going to Calle Ocho and did not leave dissapointed. With a purchase of an entree you receive an all you can drink sangria bar, how great is that!!! The food is just delicious. My favorite appetizer is the Chicharron calamari, it's sweet and spicy just amazing.
I will continue to come here for months to come and definitely recommend it to anyone who loves latin food."

"This was my second time here... Again, the food was delicious!!!! My date was very impressed. I had the Cangrejo Caliente, she had the Camarones... Oh Baby!!!! I had the Gaucho and she had Pollo Peruano. Fantastic!!!!! We were so full that we shared the Cubanito. The presentation, the flavor... again, Oh Baby!!!! This is the place to go!!!!"

"As usual, Calle Ocho provided the best service for brunch! The prices are great and there's an "all you can drink" sangria bar with 6 different types of sangria. I mostly prefer "Spanish Harlem", but there are lots of other options. The wait staff and the hosting staff were very friendly and the food was absolutely yummy! I highly recommend Calle Ocho for brunch."

"We finally went to Calle Ocho after hearing much hype and left feeling that it was all mostly hype. The food was above average, but nothing special. Moreover, the service was terrible. The waiter told us that there was a Mahi Mahi special, then when he came to take the order, and one of us wanted the special, he claimed it did not exist. It took about an hour for the entrees to be served after we ordered. After we provided our credit cards at the end of the meal, the waiter disappeared and it took 15 minutes and several questions to other waiters for them to bring the credit cards back for us to sign off. I think people come here for the scene and ambiance, which are nice. But, as a dining experience, there is much to be desired."

"I really liked the ambiance in the bar, but the dining area -- which was too big for my taste -- was sparse on an early Tuesday evening, so I didn't get a good feel for the ambiance in the dining area. I'd like to go back on a busy night.

The food was very good. I had the duck and an appetizer. I thought the portions were just right. I walked away satisfied, but not uncomfortable.

The service was okay. We had to wait a while for the check.

I'd definitely go again."

"As usual the Sangria was great! THis time we had one with lemongrass and one with a hint of cinnamon. I had the cuban sandwich and the bread was nice and soft. "Once again, I had a great time. My party arrived late and larger than I expected and I was accommodated within 30 minutes of my original reservation instead of the quoted hour which was excellent. Though service was a bit slow initially, that was due to one of the Sangria barrels breaking and the staff having to deal with that. Once that was cleared up, service was quick and attentive. Regarding the food, I always go for the larger dishes as some of them leave you wanting more. I recommend the Steak and Eggs or the Burrito Suicio as they both are substantial. My favorite sides are chorizo, plantains, and yuca fries. I will be returning."

"I love Calle Ocho! I was there for brunch on Sunday, so I don't know about the times. There were a lot of people so always make reservations. There is an open sangria bar with 6 different types of sangria (3 white, 3 red). The price of the food ranged from $12 - $16. The food may not have been the best I've ever eaten but it was very good, filling, and there were lots of options (burritos, paellas, sandwiches, burgers, etc.). It's great if you're here to hang out with a group of people and want to also drink a lot. The waiter was also very attentive and responsive."

"While the space is great and the Mohitos are tasty, I would recommend this place ONLY for drinks and appetizers. My pork entree was drowned in a nasty mushroom sauce. I sampled one of the other members of our party's beef entree over rice...the beef was ok but clearly the rice staple had been sitting around. Our waiter was attentive, however he provided a free round of "shots" which, while tasty, contained little or possibly no alcohol. Unfortunately, a couple members of our group ordered multiple "shots" without asking how much the nice-tasting flavored water cost--$9 each.

I attended a party here previously, and the space, drinks and appetizers (try the honey coated calamari) are the stars."

"Heard about this place from a previous patron who said if I liked the restaurants Sofrito & Sazon, I'll love this place. Went on V-Day; had an 8:15 pm reserv., arrived at 7:45 pm & was seated within 10 mins. I was very impressed 'cause most places like this normally make you wait a good 30 mins even w/ a reservation. Unf we had an abbreviated vers. of their menu; however, still had many choices & will definitely go back. I had the chicken peruano (amazing) & my date had the plantain crusted tilapia (recommended). I don't recommend their red sangria (too watered down). I added sugar to it & waiter didn't seem to appreciate it. He seemed a bit overwhelmed/rude @ 1st, but lightened up eventually. Try their bombas for dessert! Overall amazing!"

The food is really good.

"Everything was very good, nice place! it may be a bit overpriced (I'm latin so I know what is the real cost of "our" food!). The other issue I had was that I had seen on open table website that restaurant week had been extended and calle 8 was part of it, when we got to the place they told that that was a mistake so we ended paying the total cost of the food (no special discount!)."

"One of the party members were superbly late and it was closing into 930 before she came. My reservations were at 8. My waiter was completely understanding and just left us until she came occasionally asking us whether the rest of us would like to order or if we changed our minds about ordering first and he was just very likable. The bartenders were also very genial. Food was delish. Seafood Paella is a must. I had so much food that I brought it into work the next day. All the while it wasn't very wallet breaking."

"Food was not authentic; tasteless with no texture. Our appetizers (2) was either too pureed or too greasy. The paella was had more chorizzo than seafood, not what a Pealla is to be. The best part of the paella was the lobster (in the shell) oh and the bread that you get in the beginning. For latin cuisine they missed the boat on flavor! "Went for my girlfiends birthday because she loves the Paella.

Started with the Tuna Tiradito Sliced Ahi Tuna (note...raw tuna) and also the Arepa for appetizers. Both were very tasty. And we ordered a pitcher of the red sangria with rum and brandy in it. Very good as well.

Then had the Paella and the Salmon. The Paella is really good. The Salmon has a great taste. Note the Salmon has a rubbed spicing, so it's on the salty side. The portoins are two medium sized pieces, so do not order it past medium rare if you do not want it dry. But very good. I would order a warm center on my next visit.

Complimentary desert of the chocolate cake because I put a note in Open Table. No singing or fanfare, which was good."

"We had a great experience and the food was deliscious. My only preference would have been better timing on food delivery. We ordered tacos from the cart and we're about to take our 1st bite when our brunch food arrived. "I've been to Calle Ocho twice, with very different groups and both times it was EXCELLENT. The first was for a friend's birthday dinner with a large group, the second was with my mother and two of her friends on a Saturday night. They were visiting from out of town and I wanted to take them somewhere with great food that would be an outing/experience, rather than just a meal.

The drink menu (sangria in particular) is fabulous and reasonably priced. We shared the ceviche sampler and several small plates and literally could not get over how good every single dish was. After spending 2 hours in the restaurant on a busy Saturday night (the place was packed) we left satisfied and raving about the experience."

"I rated Good for the food but cost performance wise I may want to say Very Good. I took a friend of mine on her birthday, and I noted about her birthday when making the reservation. I mentioned about it only in hopes for a good service so that the birthday evening would not be ruined by a bad service. Overall the service was very good but unexpectedly, the waiteress brought her an icecream with a candle lit, which was really a kind gesture I thought. I would come back again."

"Have not been to Calle Ocho in a while. It remains the same - a large restaurant with solid latino based food, mostly Cuban but other Carribean and central american influences. Priced reasonably and attentive service. The food was very good. Not spicy but a mix of other flavors. The appetizers are great for sharing. Order enough of them and it could be your meal. The shrimp dishes were especially good."

"A large group of us dined at Calle Ocho on New Year's Eve. There were teenagers in the group, and all of us had a wonderful time. The food was great, my short ribs were to die for. The restaurant clearly cares about its customers. This is a hot spot, with a huge crowd coming in for the second sitting, and no wonder - with the outstanding food and the low prices!"

"We had a wonderful experience at Calle Ocho, and are looking forward to returning. The decor was colorful, energetic and just plain enjoyable to look at. Service was top-notch...we received just the right amount of attention and our questions were answered sincerely. The food was excellent - every single item that we tried, we loved....from vegetarian empanadas (melt in your mouth) to the beef, pork and chicken dishes. The real bonus was that Sunday was "free Sangria" night - and with eight varieties to choose from, we could not go wrong. This restaurant gets our highest recommendation."

"This is a frustrating restaurant. The kitchen turns out consistently good South American dishes. The bar makes good Latin cocktails and the Sunday free sangria bar is a nice idea. But the service... can leave you stranded for what feels like hours. Last night our waiter was chatty during his rare appearances but could never be founded when needed, and forgot both drink and meal orders. His performance, which unfortunately mirrors that of other servers on past visits, makes us cautious about returning."

"This is not a great restaurant, but...

A pretty quality dining experience. The music was just loud enough to set a good mood, but not so much that you had to shout. The food here is always passable. That night was no different. Waiter showed an appropriate level of engagement.

Down side - had to wait 20 minutes past the reservation for a table, perhaps bc the host changed 5 minutes after we arrived - with a different guest, this could have been terrible. (Steph V) The balloons hanging from the ceiling really do make it look cheap - would be much better if replaced by paper lanterns.

We closed the place, at 11-something on a Friday."

"I had a birthday brunch at Calle Ocho. And let me tell you, it was pretty darn awesome! My friends recommended it for me and they were so right! They had been there before and had told me about the Sangria bar. My imagination didn't do it justice. There are about 6 different vats of really GOOD sangria that you can just help yourself to! I was in Sangria heaven. Then, the food was also really good. The sweet breads at the beginning of the meal, OMG! And then without asking our waiter put a candle in my dessert because he figured out it was my birthday. No big displays or singing, just the simple little act of the candle letting me know they knew. I couldn't have been happier! Thank you Calle Ocho, I will be back!"

"The wait time to get a table from the time the last person in the party arrived was excellent (we had reservations). Our waitress greeted us quickly and answered any and all of our questions fully and cheerfully. The food arrived quickly and in excellent visual and taste condition. The open sangria bar is always excellent and though you had to sometimes wait for fresh glasses, the wait was worth it. We had an enjoyably 2 hour brunch and plan on returning at least once a month."

"Nice open dinning space, friendly service and accommodating. I had a reservation and asked for a more "private" area (not elbow to elbow with other dinners). I was being seated on one of those long benches with several tables side by side (too close for comfort) and I kindly asked to be re-seated. The hostess oblige and seated us in a great spot :)
On to the food...We had a blood orange caipirinha that was great and a glass of wine. As apetizer we tried the arepa it was good. For entree my husband had the Gaucho - Grilled Hanger Steak, Argentinean Chorizos, Chicharron, Homemade Gnocchi OMG it was so salty. I had the tilapia and the flavors were great however on the salty side also. Would not go there again."

"great Mojitos and interesting but uneven Latin fusion cuisine. We loved the bacom wrapped dates, however that was the best dish we had, so it was a little disappointing. The duck breast was perfectly cooked, but a little bland to my taste (although the lentil-sweet plantain-confit salad it sat atop was amazing!), my fiancee's paella was more impressive to the eye than the palette."

"Calle Ocho Brunch on Sundays has become extremely popular due to the free unlimited sangria. They have now extended their brunch special to Saturdays as well. My favorite dish there is definitely the vaca frita. The sangria is a bit watered down but since you can help yourself to 6 different flavors you can still manage to get a buzz before you leave."

"The food was outstanding--as usual. Decor is excellent. The service, however, was a bit slow. While the server was courteous and knowledgeable, the drinks took a very long time to come after ordering (maybe because of the high volume of the bar that night, we went on a Saturday.) Highly recommend Calle Ocho, delicious ceviche, excellent mojitos and sangria. We had a party of five and we each ordered a different entree. Each entree was perfectly prepared and delicious, not to mention the great presentations."

"I usually go for brunch on Sundays, but this time went on a Saturday and enjoyed it more. It was a little less noisy and crowded and still the same good sangria buffet :)

Only disappointment is that there's no sweet items available for brunch anymore. There used to be pancakes and other items but they are no longer there. It would be nice to have some more variety with some sweet dishes"
