"I liked their food, excellent (5 star) service, and a great variety of vodka choices for the truly adventurous.
Only wish the final bill were not so extremely high.. =)
My understanding is that this restaurant is an old school place, where they have high end clientele, but the times has changed and tons of new/cheaper places pop up around it in the restaurant "row". So competition must be fierce, which contributed to their quite empty dining room.
They should come up with a more competitive pricing model or better 3 course menu for $40 or under."

"For pre-theatre was expecting ok food but it was really lovely. Courteous staff (Dimitri, in particular, and he makes a fabulous tableside Bananas Foster). Buckwheat blinis with salmon roe, yum. The lamb kabobs were tender and served with fragrant basmati rice, of which I could have eaten a bowl.The vodka list is endless, and great specialty cocktails (try the one w/huckleberry-infused vodka.) And then there was the terrific Dimitri and his Bananas Foster.....beats any I've had in New Orleans. I live in Manhattan, and know there are lots of choices, but I'd go back to Firebird - for the food, the attentive service, and the unusual decor. Hey, people, give this place a shot. Terrific alternative to the usual pre-theatre fare."

"I've loved Firebird for years. For it's old world decor and atmosphere. The food doesn't disappoint and one cant't beat their prize fixe menu. I'd expect a bit more from the service - the wait staff is certainly polite but they lack in attentiveness and polish which I expect from a certain level of restaurants. Perhaps a bit more training would do the trick. But overall Firebird is a great place."

"firebird is extremely opulent and beautiful and ive never had a better service experience however, the place itself was really empty, except for a few much older ladies dining alone or together. my friend and i (both in our twenties) werent expecting a trendy bar by any means but the fact tht it was nearly silent was really....awkward. the extremely bright dining room didnt help.
the extensive vodka list is SO cool though and the food was amazing. just not for us really. seemed like extremely wealthy pre-theater crowd. like i said we were looking for a nice experience but silent and extremely bright just make for a strange experience in my opinion.

"What happened to those delicious bread choices? This visit we were served a slice of French bread. Other than that, the food was up to snuff - the Herring Under a Fur Coat was creative and tasty, the Belorussian Draniki was very flavorful. Our main dishes were the rich Salmon Kulebiaka and White Sturgeon - both done perfectly. We skipped dessert but had an espresso and Petrushka tea."

"I went there with a groupon for my bf birthday - 45 paid 110 value, when we were seated the waiter said that the groupon was not longer available, because the sea food is quite expensive in this new season. I think I should have been notified before, as I felt embarrased with my bf. I had no option to stay there, i talked to everybody, the chef said that the offer were no longer available since Dec, and that day I still saw the same offer on groupon. They blamed Groupon... I don't care who's fault was.. I think it's unfair that I was not been notified. They offered us two shots, a salad and a dessert on the house. The food was nothing special.. but even with the issue the service was excellent, they were polite and friendly."

"I brought a friend to Firebird for his birthday, and what a wonderful extravagance it was! Everything was super nice: the place itself, the service, and the food. We each tried appetizers we'd never had before, and chose classics (beef Stroganov and chicken Kiev) as our main courses. My friend's dessert was brought out with a candle, by a couple of waiters, who quietly wished him a happy birthday, and went about their business--such an elegant touch."

"I was very disappointed in both mine and my husbands egg dishes. However, my mother and sister did enjoy their chicken dish. The quality of our dishes were not worth the price. I usually enjoy service that is not rushed but that does not mean I don't want ANY attention to service. The waiter was nice enough to our 6 year old daughter which I appreciated. However, I did not appreciate that a child was included in the "party of five or more" for the automatic 20% tip which they did not deserve. I have never had that happen. There was a mistake on the bill as well and upon calling it to the servers attention he grumbled, made a "face", grabbed the check to change it and only after he realized he was wrong did he apologize."

"We recently stopped in to redeem a Groupon certificate and the overall experience was perfunctory. We noticed, too, that many other people that evening had the same Groupon so the food and service felt like it was served cafeteria style. No big whoop. I recall years ago when Firebird first opened and it was exciting and vibrant and had the whole Russian Empire vibe. Now the interiors are still lovely, but the experience could be made more special again."

"I went to this restaurant to use my Groupon voucher for a seafood tower for two. The food was just okay, but way too much overpriced. The decor was very tacky(but I think they tried to make it look "classy"), and the music... omg. It was like some really wierd music from the 70's Russia(I just assumed it would be Russian since it's a Russian restaurant). It does not match the decor at all. I would not go to this restaurant again unless they cut the price in half and change the music."

"The food was supposed to be somptuous, it just left us a bad taste of something that was recycled from the previous day(s) and just pulled out of the fridge to be served.
The restaurant was empty, that could explain the "quick fix" that we got for lunch.
My friend thought that the whole thing was a "joke""

"In the city for an extended weekend... Dine 2/25/13... Excellent service, delicious food. We had the prefixe meal... Beef Stragnoff and stuff Flounder which we both enjoyed for a great value. It smelled and tasted wonderful. The Russian/French influence was excellent. I didn't have my Groupon for the Seafood tower special, but everyone else did and we were envious of their order and they all seemed to enjoy it, and it was huge... We were too stuff to try anything from the Vodka menu.. maybe not time. I would definitely recommend this elegant and quaint restaurant."

"Ordered Chicken Kiev and Beef Stroganof. The food is very expensive and one would think that it would be accompanied by something else - one has to order a side (extra). THe mail complaint is that the Stroganof was barely warm - obviously had been sitting around in the kitchen - implication that there is poor coordination by staff and chef. Also, half the meat tips were stringy and of poor quality - for the cost it should have been the best Filet Mignon. The dessert had a ball of ice-cream on the cake - smaller than a ping pong ball. Summary: very very expensive place, small portions, food comes cold, food not of the best quality for the price."

"This was an over the top experience that we shall remember for a long time. It was so good we decided to take our son and his wife and we live in Pennsylvania. It was that good and that different of any Russian restaurants that we've been to. The staff was outstanding and I would love to have the same waiter again. Wonderful on all levels. This is truly one of New York top restaurants"
