For 16 years, this family-run Argentine restaurant on the west side of Melrose Ave has been quietly filling up with meat and wine lovers, celebrities and Argentine ex-pats. The ambiance is a tip of the hat to 1930s-era Buenos Aires, with masculine dark wood chairs, dim light and pink walls, and at night, there are often live bands so tango and flamenco fills the room. Family matriarch Azniv Bozoghlian is the executive chef, and her two sons Max and Gerard are always on the premises to serve, host and guide patrons through an authentic Argentine dining experience. Price (Price reflects the average cost of dinner, including one drink and tip): $31 to $50
"I took my husband here for his birthday, he loves steak and for steak lovers this is a must try place. The food is perfectly prepared and the flavors are extremely well thought out, everything from the lamb chops soaked in aged Merlot to the pumpkin puree mash with just the right amount of sea salt. I would highly recommend this place for anyone celebrating or just as a superior steak outing treat."

"It was an amazing lunch. Delicious Argentine meat and wine, tango in the correct volume and a great service offered by Maximiliano and Carlos. Want to come back soon."

"Finally a sophisticated Argentinian restaurant Gerardo one if the owners helped us with the wine selection. He introduced us to a malbec blend from Herbert Weber 2007. Outstanding wine. We ate two the special appetizers: the lingua which was very good, but I still prefers my wife. The ricotta-spinach gnocchi was absolutely delicious. Then we had and endive salad, I still feel the taste of the dressing, was extremely special but I can't quite figure what it had. Finally we share my favorite steak: skirt steak. I am glad we share. It was 14 oz. it was so tasty and tender that my mouth still fills with saliva when I think about it. For dessert we had a lemon light cake, it wasn't memorable except for the accompanying dulce de leche."

"our last day in Los Angeles was excellent with the choice of Carlitos Gardel restaurant. We discovered the restaurant because we saw reviews in the internet and were not disappointed at all. the food is delicious and the meat excellent. the prices are moderate, not too expensive and the amount of food is very generous. definitely to recommend! the waiter was very attentive and offered an excellent service."

"When you walk into Gardel, you are in Buenos Aires for the evening, and will want to linger long after you have finished dinner. Gardel continues to be even better with each successive visit. New menu items; great specials; an excellent wine list--the best selection of Malbecs in Los Angeles--and all of them have not yet made it to the wine list! Attentive, personal, unobtrusive service, but there when you need something. The owners and staff alike are truly interested in doing whatever they can for you to enhance your visit. They even make sure to say thank you and good night to you before you leave. Yes, it has gotten pricier, but so have all the other fine dining establishments; it is worth the splurge. Have fun in Buenos Aires!"

"We had dinner here on Easter sunday. The service was excellent! The food was good, not great. The garlic chicken was a bit on the salty side. The Provencal (garlic fries) were very good. The food seemed a bit more expensive than the menu on their website. Don't know if they bumped up their prices because it was Easter, or perhaps they have not updated their website. It did not seem like a special Easter menu, just slighlty higher prices?"

"This is an authentic Argentinian restaurant, and was filled with other diners who appeared to be Argentinian or Spanish, impeccably dressed for an evening out. The wine list is most impressive with a wonderful selection of Argentinian wines in particular. We started with salads, which were very generously sized, and shared the 14 oz flank steak which was cooked to perfection and delicious, with the famous garlic fries on the side. We did not leave room for dessert. The ambience and service is very nice. We will return."

"Cool spot on Melrose. Intimate and relatively quiet. Food was very good, but considering price, I would have expected a bit better. Not offending, but it was basically a high end Gaucho Grill with less healthy options. Items like salad and bread that were great, were outstanding. Other items that were good or just okay, like the steak, vegetables and mashed potatoes were all fine but unspectacular."

"Our waiter was phenomenal. Very friendly, made excellent recommendations, and provided wonderful table-side chat when he knew we were from out-of-town and it was our first time to the restaurant. The owner also came by to make sure our food was to our liking and we were enjoying ourselves. My son had the rib eye with chimichurri sauce and I had the skirt steak. Both were cooked perfectly and super delicious. I also had a burrata salad with fresh mozzarella and melt-in-your-mouth prosciutto. The best I've ever tasted. We'll definitely be back for more!"
