"The service was hurried and careless, the place noisy and the food worse than your average neighborhood Chinese takeout. The whole joint is nothing more than an overpriced, average quality neighborhood Chinese restaurant.

"Shun Lee West features some interesting dishes, nearly all prepared well, and some polite but thoughtless service (waiters forgetting to bring things, occasionally bringing them in the wrong order, etc.). The main problem is the noise level, but if you get there by 5:30 that's not an issue..."

"While the maitre d' could have provided us with a warmer and more friendly welcome, our waiter was a delight with a gracious smile and spot-on service. The velvet chicken and corn soup was heavenly. The spareribs were cooked and seasoned perfectly and the spinach that accompanied the meal fresh and green, just the appropriate crunchiness. I loved the scallion pancake and even though I'd already eaten way too much (it was so good), I would have found room for more as they were so good. My dinner partner had beef with peapods and declared it fabulous.
Then why only 4 stars? I would have given five stars if the maitre d' had been pleasant."

"Shun Lee is a classic! Sophisticated yet relaxed, they provide a great experience, from being greeted upon entering, to the excellent service, to the wonderful food. From the many appetizers shared among the group, to the Beijing Duck prepared for four people, to the noodles and additional entrees ordered, the food was excellent across the board. This is no heavy, sauce-laden food - it is well-prepared, delicate yet flavorful. Rather than have many plates of food cramping the table, the staff divides and plates the food for everyone, which allows you to concentrate and enjoy the people you're with, instead of pushing plates around. I've been coming here for many years, and will continue to for many more...it's still one of the best!"

"My husband and I hadn't been to Shun Lee West in more than 20 years. We decided to go for his birthday and take our teenage girls. We weren't expecting amazing food - we knew the place was always more about the ambiance - but we were really shocked at how bad it was. Each dish seemed blander than the last, not even as good as our local not-very-good Chinese takeout place. A noodle dish had an odd, bitter taste. The other dishes were edible, but completely undistinguished. A major disappointment."

"We have been to - and liked - Shun Lee many times, but our last experience was a disappointment. Neither service nor food was as good as they have been in the past. Next time we have an opera at Lincoln Center we'll eat at Fiorello's."
