After completing a 3 year classical culinary apprenticeship at the restaurant Foerenhos in Garmisch, Germany, Herbert Barnsteiner spent the next 8 years gaining extensive culinary experience in some of Europe’s top restaurants and hotels in Switzerland and Germany including a 2-star Michelin restaurant in The Black Forest, Hotel Barreis. After immigrating to Canada in 1988, Herbert held top positions starting at trendy Acqua. After Acqua, Herbert worked 4 years with the Oliver/Bonacini Group becoming Executive Chef for 2 years with popular Jump restaurant. Following Jump, Herbert and his wife Michelle made a decision to give Herbert a stage for his culinary talents and open up their own restaurant. They found a beautiful historical house, in the foothills of Casa Loma called The Corner House. After 8 weeks of renovations, Herbert and Michelle opened up the Corner House July,1999. Michelle runs the front of the house. The newly renovated Corner House has had a wonderful new beginning..

"This was my second time at Scaramouche - the first being almost 8 years ago. It was exactly as I'd remembered - flawless.
Table of four. Service was outstanding - unrushed, friendly, funny, polite. Portion size was perfect. Left the restaurant exactly right amount of full - not *too* full but not needing another bite not hungry, just perfectly content. To be honest, I'd have had another bite if the plant hadn't been cleaned.
A very nice amuse bouche consisted of apple slaw with smoked salmon (I'm under-selling it here). We ordered the tuna sashimi, goat cheese and scallop with ham hock ravioli (one of the specials) appetizers and all were outstanding. Mains were venison, sea bass and filet and all were flawless.
Everything was perfect."

"This was a second visit -a family dinner with adult children. All of us enjoyed the meal , every course was excellent. With limited notice Chef created an entre for my daughter, (lactose intolerant vegetarion) that was exceptional. The atmosphere was pleasant, service was friendly."

"I hadn't been to the corner house in years and thought to try again. The food was delicious but unfortunately they were understaff so the service was ver very slow and the waiting area was very tight and we were in the way of the servers. Also there was no ice and I love ice in my water. Besides that I would come back"

"The Corner House has become one of our "go to" places for a romantic dinner together. The restaurant is actually an beautiful house on Davenport, and the ambiance is very cozy and romantic. The food is excellent, if not trendy. We are both foodies, and while we love the "new food" scene, we always come back to Corner House for a great meal on a special occasion."

"My wife and I have been to the corner house many times before, and it just gets better every time. This was by far our best experience. If it's on the menu, I have the black Angus striploin. This is by far the best steak I've ever had. It's so tender, you don't need a steak knife to cut it, as only a butter knife is provided. In all the years that my wife and I have gone, we've only had a great experience. Overall experience is always outstanding. The food and staff are fabulous."

"We had heard so much about this restaurant so we chose it for a special 'cozy for two' dinner occasion.
Being set in a house gives it that 'old world' atmosphere... Difficult to find places like this in trendy Toronto!

"A fine neighborhood restaurant. Cramped quarters and loud diners nearby are not a good combination, but a quaint homey atmosphere.
The service was adequate, but not quite as attentive as would be expected from a higher end restaurant (that gives you the "option" of picking the 3 choices of 15, 18, or 20% tip on top of the post-tax total).
The Organic Arugula Salad…with Shaved Pears, Candied Walnuts and Gorgonzola tossed in Apple Cider Vinaigrette was okay, so long as you weren't expecting much of the Shaved Pears, Candied Walnuts and Gorgonzola ingredients, which is a shame for $12.50. However, the striploin steak and rack of lamb were both prepared to specifications and delicious, with tasty vegetable sides. Excellent coffee"

"I've eaten at Corner House several times but always for a special occasion. It's too special to be used just for something casual. As luck would have it, they had extended their Winterlicious menu and their prix fixe was only $25. It was exceptionally good value for an exceptional meal. Our only problem was that they had run out of Lagavulin Scotch just as we ordered it for an after dinner drink but that is a small glitch in what was a superb dining experience."

"I had an enjoyable night out at Corner House. Food was great and I can be quite picky. I had the marinated beet salad with pecorino cheese and sunflower seeds which somehow worked amazingly well together. We had glasses of wines that were recommended for our dishes. They weren't super unique, but they worked really well with the dish."

"Their Winterlicious menu was probably the best in the city - I had never heard of this place before but I will be back with my husband. The food was exceptional!
I am sure it is not news to them that the entrance way is a problem - barely room for four people to stand and with that in mind they may want to lighten their booking load (we almost couldn't get out the door!).
I anticipated them wanting a quick turn around given the Winterlicious date but the bill hit the table before I had even had a bite of my dessert and with a half glass of wine still in front of me. Again, lighter bookings might be something to consider."

"I really enjoyed the food and the atmosphere but I felt very rushed. The waiter brought the cheque while we were finishing our desserts. We had not yet paid when he came back and he said " the line up is startung" I thought that was extremely rude considering I was not yet finished my tea and had to leave half of it there because we were being "kicked out"! I would never go back for winterlicious."

"We were seated at the right side of the ground floor dining room by the fireplace. The tables were set a bit too close together, and the noise level a bit high for intimate dining. Apart from that, the food and service were very good."

"I came to this restaurant many years ago and found the food & service to be very good, but very pricey. When I saw it on the Winterlicious list I thought I would try it again. This time round, we had a marvellous 3- course meal at the very reasonable Winterlicious price of $35 per person. The atmosphere seems a lot more relaxed than the last time I was here, and I am definitely going to give this cozy neighbourhood restaurant another try. We really enjoy attending local restaurants in the area, of which there are many at reasonable prices. We hope Corner House can be added to our list for regular nights out."

"The restaurant itself is not built for a family setting. Rather, it is certainly a restaurant that the parents would need to hire a babysitter for if they wanted some alone time together. However, they could do far worse than spend that time at Corner House. The restaurant itself is quaint, having at one time been an old house, filled with various pieces of artwork. The service was very good and prompt and the waiter himself was professional throughout the evening with a good working knowledge of the menu.I had the venison stew, my father had the steak and my mother the trout. Each one of use found are meals to be very tasty and well cooked. Overall, I would certainly come back here, but more for a celebration or special event."

"My husband and I recently revisted the charming Corner House restaurant near Casa Loma. We celebrated our first anniversay there in 1975 and dined there on many other occasions in the seventies and eighties. After moving to the suburbs, we had not been there in at least twenty years. It still has the same romatic ambience and excellent service that we remembered so fondly. The food was absolutely splendid. Everything was prepared and presented beautifully. We are already making plans for a return visit as soon as the weather is nice so we can sit outside and enjoy the view. This is a definite must to put on your list if you are visiting Toronto."
