"My friends and I went there for dinner since we wanted to enjoy a nice steak. When we got there after making reservations a few days before, it was completely empty. After our experience there, we later understood why the restaurant would be empty at 6:30 on a Sunday night. The waiters just hung out together talking while we sat there waiting for them to acknowledge us for anything and they reacted as if we were interrupting them in their conversation. The food was fantastic so compliments to the chef however, the staff will most probably give you an upset stomach."

"As the name says..Steak Frites is the way to go. Delish food, Frisee, Moules, Steak and a potent Martini, Staff friendly withour overdoing it. We'll be back! Also, nice to be able to converse in a Manhattan restaurant without screaming."

"And tasteless. Took forever to get a bottle of wine. Union square cafe up the block has similar prices and is years ahead on quality. I have eaten many times at steak trite and I'm not going again. They really don't care abou the quality of their food. I think it's a tourist trap."

"This restaurant has been around for at least 20 years and its survival is a mystery. In the old days it was a just-okay, inexpensive neighborhood restaurant that had delicious fries, and chewy-tough steaks which were not the best quality. We ended up going there a few nights ago. It is still a just-okay boite with tough-chewy meat but at higher prices."

"The food was average, service was not good. Seemed like no one cared we were there. "Union Square" hamburger is not to be confused with the real Union Square restaurant burger next door!"

"Onion soup, oh Onion Soup.... you are the best at Steak Frites. Some of the best Onion Soup I've ever had is at this wonderful steak house in Union Square. There are all kinds of flavors in the actual soup and the cheese on top is just enough but not too much. It's simply perfect.
One of my friends had their steak sandwich, which was delicious with an over abundance of steak. I had the parmesan-encrusted salmon salad, which I would recommend highly. It was too big - just the right size. I've also had the steak salad there before which was delicious.
Great place for lunch meetings."

"Steak Frites -- the name says it all. The menu offers good steaks, mussels and other French bistro items. My friends had scallops with risotto that got raves. As always, my burger was juicy and cooked to perfection. Their Onion Soup is reason enough for a visit. The three of us shared profiteroles for desert -- which was a great capper to our meal. Its entire staff makes dining a pleasure. Steak Frites is a great place to enjoy what will always be a fine meal with friends."

"Food was OK but it was a long wait -- about an hour; manager admitted kitchen screwed-up. Finally, my order was confused but I was hungry so I ate it anyhow -- I received Steak with Bernaise Sauce (same as my dining companion) but mine was supposed to be Au Poivre. Steak was very good but the administration was apparently disorganized. Manager did apologize and we received additional wine and bottled water. Also, looks like they are catering more to tourists now: the french fries (frites) are the pre-made variety; this used to be a really good restaurant -- is becoming so-so."

"an actual restaurant - not coffee shop or diy in this neighborhood - without being hugely expensive. had omelet - tasteless and uneventful. had to ask for bread since they don't bring it unless... wouldn't mind if they spiffed it up a little - it has gotten to look a little scruffy -- still..."

"Steak Frites reminded us of a French bistro. There was a consistent hum of conversation, but we were always able to hear the server and each other. The black & red decor was very Parisian. The prix fixe menu was a great value. For $39, you get an appetizer, an entree, and dessert. The crab cakes were light and had large chunks of crab. The delicious dressing made the frisee and lardon salad something special. The bouillabaisse and the petite filet Oscar were both very good, and the desserts-warm apple tart and mocha pots de creme--were fabulous. The service was efficient and gracious."

"The food is always good at Steak Frites. I particularly like the hamburgers and steak salad for lunch. I also like the fact that the restaurant isn't loud, crowded and rushed. It's a great place to meet for a business lunch for that reason."

"Dinner this past Sunday was fine, very nice waiter and the manager checked on us a couple of times. Although the restaurant was virtually empty, the hostess first took us to the worst table in the whole place, dark, by the kitchen... We've had several meals there before and realize that Sunday might not be the best night for dinner there..."

"This weekend was the second time I have dined at this Resturant. The first time was amazing with great service. This time my waiter seemed to be confused and not paying attention to our table and our needs. The food is GREAT!!!! I will be back in NYC next month and I will be dining at this Resturant again."

"We have always liked this place, consisently good food and decent service. Went there for Valentines Day and it was one of the worst service experiences we had in manhattan. They screwed up our appetizers, screwed up our dinners twice, and the desserts took forever - and this off a prix fixe menu. The meal lasted a painful few hours. Seemed as if the whole restaurant staff was fighting with each other. Would take change in mgmt for me to go back."

"The bar at Steak Frites Union Sq has good prices for this Union Sq area. Everything else about it was just average. Overcooked ravioli, overcooked duck, and had to send the desert choice back twice and ended up selecting a different desert. However, the oysters and Maryland crabcake were very good. As a neighborhood bar it wasn't a pit, but it wasn't great either."

"The Valentine's Day menu was absolutely amazing. If you get a chance to eat anything resembling the Duck Comfit (with crispy brussel sprouts no less!) or the Braised Short Ribs (with these ribs, you'll be grateful for the horseradish mashed potatoes to soak up the juices!) at Steak Frites, don't miss it."

"came here with 2 co-workers for restaurant week lunch to check out this place. The mussels were delicious, the french onion soup was a nice large portion, and the beef ribs were yummy as well as the apple tart for dessert. The wait staff was available when we need them and were attentive. Nothing stood out about this place but I will be returning for lunch again."

"This vibrant restaurant is next to the famous USC, and likely gets the no table available crowd from them. Hoever, I think that this restaurant, albeit nosiy is a good find. I have lways loved steak and this restaurant gets it right. The side dishes were also delicious.
My colleague was impressed with both the food and the price (he's cheap). So I will definitely return for another round. Of note, the restaurant can get a little loud, so if you are ooking for a more intimate setting, be sure to alert the hostess."

"We went for Restaurant Week and all thoroughly enjoyed or meals. The crabcake appetizer was superb, and the bouillabaisse was delicious. The atmosphere is quite lovely, although I felt like the dress form in the corner behind my chair was going to fall on me at any second. My friends had the short rib and steak frites and were pleased with both meals. Be sure that the host/hostess notes your arrival if you have a reservation."

"Great classic French bistro, from food to service to ambiance to wine. Beer is overpriced, so just have wine. Good price points on the food make up for it.
Menu combines well-executed bistro fare (moules frites, escargots, steak tartare), but also features the steakhouse method of picking your beef and choosing your sides. It sometimes seemed our food runners were trying to pull our plates out from under us before we were finished, which was irritating, but better than being ignored. Our server seemed a little forgetful (the table beside us never got their appetizer), but was also attentive, personable and genuine.
Good date atmosphere, but the general crowd seemed to be pairs or more of friends. Some large tables too."

"Everything was overly salty. Even though the place was pretty empty, service was bad. Waitress kept rushing us and when we needed something she was too busy chatting with her coworkers to pay attention. Steak Frites were bad. It was incredibly salty au poivre sauce, and steak was medium rare when I asked for mediuem well. It wasn't even trimmed, the inedible fiberous tendon were still on the steak. French onion soup was also incredibly salty. Ordered profiteroles and the pastry was at least a few days stale. Complete waste of my money. Don't waste your money here."

"My wife and I went for the first time and loved it! Mussels appetizer was great. Shrimp cocktail was a generous portion (4 large) but we were mixed on the sauce/seasoning aside from the traditonal cocktail sauce. Signature Steak Frites was excellent! Service was friendly and efficient. Wines were affordable as we enjoyed a bottle of Malbec. Overall great value for restaurantweek in NYC!"

"We went here for restaurant week and it was just ok. The cocktail sauce tasted like ketchup, no kick whatsoever. My date's food was cold so he sent it back. The main item was warmer (still not hot) and the new sides were still luke warm. The majority of the time we were there the maitre d was talking to various wait staff and looking/pointing at our table. This started before there was an issue with the main course. We just didn't feel relaxed. It was ok but probably a spot we won't return to."

"Good restaurant week lunch. They do not limit the menu to cheap option like other restaurants. Classic French brasserie. I took soup onions, steak poivre (+6), French fries and profiterolles. It was very good. Avoid mussels or ask that they cook it well. Decor needs some upgrade."

"The restaurant Steak Frites had a $6 surcharge on the steak frites on the menu for lunch. Better steak deals can be found without the surcharge in other steakhouses participating in Restaurant week (The Porter House, The Capital Grille)."
