The Berghoff Restaurant is a Chicago landmark, serving German-style cuisine and culture since 1898. One of the oldest family-run businesses in the nation, it is now run by fourth generation, Carlyn Berghoff. At today’s Berghoff, menus have evolved to add newer, lighter and more contemporary dishes, but it’s still the same old Berghoff, down to the famous root beer.

"Remembering fondly the Bergoff of 40 years ago, and on the advice of a friend, I was eager to return, having had a not so great experience just a few years ago. As a lover of German food, I didn't need their contemporary additions to the menu, but was pleased at the high quality of the wienerschnitzel and red cabbage. Our server was fabulous. I'll be back."

"Near several theaters and server asked if we were attending a show to make sure we were served without any issue. Consistently good food with great service. Love the "old Chicago" feel with the wood paneled walls and antique light fixtures."

"I love German food and have been to many such restaurants across the globe. The Berghoff has (almost) everything you want, but the night we were there, the food was bland, tired looking, and bleh. I would go back, to try it again, on the chance we visited on an off night."

"We had not dined at Bergoff in many years, and our experience was so good we will be back soon! The place was redone, but the atmosphere is timeless. They still have their own excellent beer and their private label bourbon. The service was excellent and the prices a value. Starting with a fabulous casserole of spinach, cheese and spaetzle and a flavorful brace of mini-sausages, we knew the evening would be memorable. Our entrees were incredible: my wife had a crabstuffed sole that was so fresh, so buttery, it was unrivaled. My Rahm Schnitzel was hammered pork with a coating that was thinner and tastier than any Schnitzel I've had. The portions were huge as well. We can kick ourselves for waiting so long to return. It was wonderful!!"

"The Berghoff is my favorite place to eat in Chicago. My mother is German and I have spent a long time in Germany-- the Berghoff does a great job with their food, especially the various preparations of potatoes (try the potato pancakes with applesauce!). The atmosphere is pleasant and comfortable, and the whole place has a very happy feel. I had my rehearsal dinner for my wedding in the Berghoff (downstairs) and all the guests had a great time. This restaurant is a real treasure in the downtown, and reasonably priced!"

"Hadn't been to Berghoff since it changed a few years ago. I'd heard it was good again so we decided to try it. We were pleasantly surprised by the menu which combined the old German favorites with some new lighter dishes. We went before a CSO concert and will do so again in the future."

"The food here is just ok overall. This is more of a tourist/old school locale. Our server was nice and the management was professional. Our food took a VERY long time to arrive. However, we didn't have to say anything as our server was aware of the delay and had the manager discount the bill a generous amount. I appreciate good customer service so much, that I would return and try something else."

"We dined at The Berghoff Restaurant because it was the most convenient German restaurant to downtown Chicago. The food-- main course was ok, not great. Service was fine. Our reservation was at 7:30pm on a Saturday so the restaurant was vibrant when we arrived. However, it quickly cleared out as diners headed to various shows. At that point the restaurant was quite empty and felt like a cavern. Most disappointing were the desserts which were "store bought" and had not yet fully defrosted. I'd skip this course in the future."

"The food was just OK. Wienerschnitzel was very good, but my companion did not like the salmon. The service was very rushed -- the waitress was pushing dessert before everyone wsas finished, and delivered desserts several minutes before dinner plates were cleared. This happened even though there were a number of open tables and no need to push to turn the table.
I liked the ambiance a lot -- old world feel; vibrant and loud bar (in a good way)."

"Finding two favorite restaurants fully booked, we needed a restaurant within easy walking distance of Orchestra Hall. Berghoff, which we often visited many years ago, was one of several suggested by Open Table. We arrived at 5:30, before the dining room was crowded, and this may have contributed to the speed and efficiency with which we were presented our cocktails and then our main course. Our waiter was pleasant, efficient, and spoke perfect English -- a change from the old Berghoff. Food and drink were excellent and fairly priced. We will be back."

As a mix-race German-South Asian couple we decided to celebrate the South Asian New Year with German food and were very saddened by the experience; regretted not making our traditional German food at home! "We were sad when the original Berghoff closed. When it reopened under new management, we were happy but skeptical. Our first experience was so-so. We revisited last week. Not all of the original dishes are still available, but the creamed spinach (an available side) is still heavenly. Our friends who dined with us had had a not so good experience at the reincarnation, but they were impressed this time. All is not lost."

"A quaint little place in the heart of Chicago famous downtown Loop, well not so little actually - it's a pretty huge restaurant, cafe and bar. The atmosphere would be nice and cozy if it wasn't for bright light killing the vibe of a Europe inspired pub. The menu is all over the place - you get excited about nice hearty German inspired ideas only to roll down to "gnocchi", Nicoise and even tandoori chicken...my fish was very tender and moist though! The portions are giant as per US tradition, so a lot of food is left behind unfortunately..."

"WE used to go the the Berghoff regularly before the CSO. We stopped for a long while, using other places for about 20 years. Then decided to try the Berghoff again, went early before the Symphony to be sure to get a table. Tried our old staple, wiener schnitzel, potato pancakes and red cabbage. These were as good as we remember them from long ago. Same fore the apple strudel dessert, super. Service was fine. We will go back from time to time on Symphony nights."

"I went here for nostalgic reasons because my dad used to bring me here when I was a kid. I haven't been here since the 1970s so it was fun to go back.
The food was good but I think it's odd that the German dishes come with marinated artichokes and/or grilled asparagus rather than red cabbage or sauerkraut. Also, the bread basket has weak--store-bought (dry) rye bread and a parmesan cheese crisp. It's like the new owner can't decide to stay a German landmark or be a trendy restaurant."

"The restaurant was beautiful with images of the world's fair and nice woodwork. Service was fair. We were a group of six with tip included and it seemed our server had that in mind during our visit. Coffee for one of our party was forgotten, cake for another was forgotten and he was over all disinterested in serving us. Food was OK."

"From out of town. Have eaten at the Berghoff in the past. The food quality is still good and still a good selection. They offer other food besides German just in case someone in your group does not want German food."

"Standard favorites were very good. The service was less than attentive. It was adequate. It was St. Patrick's weekend and I'm sure they were inundated!"

"I was here about a year ago and I remember it as being much better with bigger portions. I was in Chicago all week for business and I had left overs from every restaurant I ate at except this one. The sauerbraten was really middle of the road in taste...potato pancakes were excellent as was the house amber ale.
I generally skip desert but had the German Chocolate cake...also very small portion compared to other places I've eaten at in my travels. All in all I doubt I'd go back.
On the plus side I arrived early for my reservation and they did give me early seating on a rather busy night."

"Berghoff is a reliable well-located downtown spot. Service is pleasant and competent. Portions are generous and the menu reminds one of German-Bavarian cuisine - but it's obvious that the cooks are Americans who "imitate" that cuisine but it's just middling when compared to the original and authentic German fare."

"I had not been to the berghoff in years. It's a historic spot in Chicago. The place has a nostalgic, old restaurant look with an updated menu. It isn't all German and is vegetarian friendly. The food was good. I had the vegetable panini and my companions had lamb stew and the lamburger. We all appreciated the friendly, attentive service."
