"Impressive Italina/American cuisine while the ravioli apetizer was just perfect. The short ribs entree was very tender while the pre-fixe eco menu is highly recommended. We also had 2 great bottles of red wine with cheese. Will definitely go back again."

"We had a lovely brunch with attentive service, wonderful food and a pleasant, "grown up" ambience. Without being stuffy the restaurant like a real restaurant and not like a "brunch spot". We look forward to having dinner there in the near future. Highly reccomend giving it a try."

"What a pleasant surprise awaited we first-timers but not last.
Our waitperson, Jeff, was a charmer and very efficient.
The food was delicious and creatively prepared. Chef Ed Brown obviously has a developed palate.

"I ate at Eighty-One with with a party of four. We enjoyed it very much. The service was great and the food was pretty good. The mushroom soup was delicious, the basic chicken entree was very moist, the pate appetizer was OK, the skate entree was good but a bit too salty and the dessert was very nice. I would go back but I would order something else."

"Excellent neighborhood find. The tables are far apart, you can hear what you want to hear. The restaurant has a warm, simple, elegant ambiance. The food is very good- all our dishes were cooked to the desired level (excellent rare tuna). The $30 menu is excellent as is the bargain wine on that menu. The service was good- we would have liked a little less appearance of being rushed. Not too bad, but obvious (courses came a little too fast,check before we asked for it-though not too much hovering)."

"Lovely meal. Took advantage of the recession special - amazing! Two courses for $30.81. The duck pate was lovely followed by the crispy duck confit over sauerkraut. The duck skin could have been crispier but the meat was rich and creamy which was perfectly balanced by the tang of the sauerkraut. I enjoyed a lovely Syrah-Grenache blend made for the restaurant."

"There have been a lot of people who compared Eighty One unfavorably to Dovetail (another restaurant on the UWS), but I have to say that dollar for dollar I enjoyed everything at Eighty One much much more than anything I tried at Dovetail. Try the scallop ravioli - it's amazing."

"We ordered off the 2-course prix fixe menu, and unfortunately I felt that we got what we paid for. While the scallop ravioli appetizer is as good as they say it is, the other appetizers and main courses were not particularly notable. The service and ambiance are impeccable though. They really do an amazing job of decorating the dining room, spacing the tables and providing light background music so that you feel like you are in a very elegant space where others are dining, but so that you have privacy to enjoy your meal with the company that you came with."

"We went for brunch and were seated in a side room that is probably normally used for the hotel breakfast. The food was fairly standard brunch fare, tasty and with obviously high-quality ingredients. Don't expect anything particulary creative or inventive though. I hope to get to try 81 for dinner soon to form a better opinion."

"Very nice looking restaurant. Service was above average from the moment we walked in and checked our coats. Wait staff was knowledgeable and attentive without being overbearing. We had asked and were given the table and location we wanted. Great idea in this economy to offer preimium wines by the bottle at a discount. 2006 Duckhorn Merlot for $48 is a no brainer. No rush to turn over the table made the evening very relaxed and enjoyable."

"Interesting concepts and good (if not perfect) execution: the hen egg with pork belly was fantastic, and the shrimp really nice. The bacon mac and cheese was boring and over-sharp; the dover sole was very good but not special. The desserts -- caramel apple, chocolate donuts -- were unreservedly spectacular. Odd choice of 80s music in the dining room (not very loud though, and conversation was easy), which was just barely on the safe side of the "Red Room" from Twin Peaks as far as decor, but comfortable."

"Eighty One is a rarity; from its food to its ambiance, it is a delight. It is one of the few restaurants in New York City that is spacious, quiet and nicely lit. You can hear everyone at your table, and barely hear anyone at the table nearby. The food is excellent; the best lamb I have ever tasted in a NY restaurant. I recommend it highly, whether for a special occasion or just an evening out."

"sunday night it was empty so very quiet...too quiet. Food was tasty although menu is a bit challenging...not sure if it is that the items have too many ingredients or are just too fussy. I wanted a fish but black bass is NOT sustainable. This level resto should stick with the sustainable ones. Desserts were the highlight of the meal...all really yummy. Cocktails good too.
I had the marinated leeks to start, it was boring. Mushroom soup very tasty as was the beet salad.
Despite disappointing food, we had a fun evening!"

"We had a wonderful meal. The Hudson Valley fois gras was very good, but the highlight for me was the Long Island duck breast ... deliciously tender - perfectly cooked. My wife had the Yellowfin Tuna Tartare and Red Maine shrimp and loved them. The Tasmanian Pinot Noir did not disappoint either. We both then chose the Lemon Tart for dessert and were delighted."

"The upscale decor is beautiful and the ambiance is terrific. The tables are a comfortable distance apart -- which is something I really love. Waitstaff is friendly and very well trained; attentive without being intrusive - I felt spoiled. Chef Brown continues to amaze me. He's not afraid to take a risk with an unusual ingredient, or unexpected combination of flavors, and he hits it out of the park every time. Don't tell him, but I took a photo of each plate. The wine list was excellent, and our waiter was able to suggest several that complimented our dishes while not offending our fiscal sensibilities. We will definitely go back, and this time we won't wait for a special occasion. Bravo!"

"The Eco-(nomy) Friendly prix fixe menu at $30 represents a great deal, as do the "cellar specials". The food is very good and the prix fixe has enough selections to satisfy just about everyone. The service is friendly and not obtrusive and the restaurant is very handsome and smart. All in all, this is a great choice in the Upper West Side neighborhood, just a half block from the park and across from the museum."

"Two of us took advantage of the tasting experience and two ordered full entrees, which they were pleased with. The tastings we had were all wonderful. "this cavernous restaurant was nearly empty when we ate there, creating an eerie feeling. the food was good but lacked finesse. for example, a pate appetizer was presented as two nearly one-inch thick slabs with two one-32nd inch thick pieces of hole-filled toast, half of it covered with a mayonaisse-like goo. take a lesson from "the modern" on how to serve pates! the entree, fish on a bed of lentils was good, but the fish to lentil ratio was absurd: 6 to 1, i'd say. 81 is more likely to appeal to guests at the hotel above it than to foodies and/or native new yorkers!"

"Long-time fans of Ed Brown, we paid an overdue visit here a few months ago and have been going back since, with anticipation and satisfaction. A rather non-descript room, though tables are well-spaced. Service is never less than decent and has been extraordinary.. The $30.81 two course meal offrs excellent value and food carefully prepared and executed. This time we tried all 3 entrees: each a winner. Special wine values are most welcome and well chosen. Pity that the place doesn't seem to be doing as well as it deserves. We're trying to spread the word and looking forward to New Years Eve there."

"Overall the experience was poor. We walk in with no clear direction of where to go. When we asked front desk they responded "we are not part of the restaurant"..finally getting to right area it took 5 minutes to acknowlege us during this time we were still not sure if we were in the right area as there was no host podium or directional signage. When I saw the menu I was looking forward to what was reviewed/shown on TV (veg spagetti) to no avail.
I live in the area so not sure if I will go back for brunch."

"We selected 81 for Thanksgiving because we enjoyed it so much the first time. Of the six dishes we selected three were thoroughly enjoyable. The turkey for the main course, however, as it often is, was dry, only extra sauces rendering it edible. The waitress would much rather have been at her own family celebration. The low point, however, was the wine steward, who advised the bottle we'd selected wasn't available, suggested another, more expensive, then fell silent when I responded that the vintage year was unimpressive. We, ourselves, selected another, which was fine. At the end of it, unfortunately, he again materialized, to pour every last drop, including the dredges: He should be sent back to finish his wine stewart education."

"Enjoyed a memorable dinner on a very busy Saturday night. Food was outstanding and included the best striped bass I have ever eaten.
