A charmingly rustic wood, stucco, stone and wrought iron décor; Escoba seats 175 diners with the capacity to host up to 280 for specialized cocktail and appetizer functions. "the food was awesome but we were looking for a quiet romantic night and it was far from that. we will not return because of the noise level; we had to yell to talk to each other.plus there was quite a long wait even though we had a reservation.if you are going with a group and don't mind the noise; I will mention again that the food was great."

"Went to Escoba for Dine Out...having been to Blink the night before, the expectations were pretty high. The food was good - loved the appie sampler plate - but the dining experience itself was nothing notable. The service was brutal. We had to wait over 5 minute before our server acknowledged us...another 10+ for her to come back again to order drinks...I was dying of thirst and asked for a bottle of Pelligrino asap - which she forgot. But didn't forget to take off of the bill...so I had to have that corrected. Other people brought out our first and last course because I guess our server was too busy? I expected the service to be top-notch and attentive regardless of Dine Out; I was disappointed and not going back anytime soon."

"Our waiter doesnt show up till 15 minutes after being seated (took them 25 mins to seat us) We get our drinks and order 35-40 minutes into sitting down. Appetizers came out half and hours later. At this point we are all done our drinks already and not ONCE does she come back to refill anything. Our main entrees don't arrived till and hour and half in. And our waitress never shows up to give us steak knives or to even check if everything was fine. (we ordered 2 steaks, blue and rare, both came out medium well) We were so hungry and couldnt wait after waiting for her about 15 mins. She doesnt show up till we are all done and waiting again. Food was fine but the service and wait times were ridiculous. We got out at 11 from out 8:30 reservation"

"The service was very slow and they got our bill wrong and when asked to fill our water twice that night she forgot both times.

This was probably due to the fact that it was Dine Out week and they had a larger than expected crowd. The food was very good though. We had the $35 per person dine out option and it was very well served. It took the server a very long time to come out with our desserts. Overall, service was the low point of the experience -- although, I don't blame her because it was busy -- and food was the high point.

The temperature in the restaurant was a bit too hot for our liking as well. It could be the ventilation as it did feel a bit stuffy."

"The restaurant itself is old, with beat up tables that slide, crowded seatings and average ambiance. Perhaps we were sitting by a large group of people, but it was loud. Difficult to have a conversation with all the noise, plus the periodic loud music from either the next building or the lounge.

Services were slow. It took 10 minutes to get our water. Just as long for the food and dessert. The salad, even when requested to have dressing on the side came with both dressing on the side and dressing already in the salad. Perhaps they marinated the greens, but we found it too strong.

Strip loin steak was very tough, with again too much sauce.

The only saving grace was the dessert. The creme brulee was well done. 2/5 stars."

"Wonderful service and ambience. The wine samples are always a treat, and are very well thought out, not the most expensive, yet usually great tasting! "I took my girlfriend on Valentines evening and our experience was great! Our server was very friendly and had a great knowledge of the menu. We ordered the vday special which included prime rib that was cooked to perfection and it arrived at our table suprisingly quick. It is pricey but what you would expect from a restaurant of this caliber. We'll definately return and recommend it to anyone looking to have a special evening out."

"The food was good but would have like to get more food on my plate for the money I was paying for it. We came to dinner hungry and left hungry. The portions were small compared to the price. "Service was great, our server was very attentive and had great recommendations. Ambiance was nice, soft lighting and not overly crowded. The Escoba spring rolls were amazing, dip trio was tasty too. Chorizo and chicken pasta was just the right size and had nice flavors. Stuffed chicken was also good, but a small chicken supreme - guys - you might need a bit more to be full! Overall - great experience and will go back."

"I really like this restaurant and always leave pleased. This time was no different. The food was very good. The service was great, especially to accommodate the 2 extra people that I dragged along. I was disappointed that they got rid of their draft because nothing beats smashed potatoes and a pint of Hoegaarden. It's not a quick lunch but I prefer the more social aspects of an eating get together."

"The only issue was the noise from the kitchen behind us. They were watching a Flames game I'm pretty sure, and we were seated right next to the kitchen "door". I would recommend perhaps replacing the curtains with something a bit more insulated. Other than this minor issue, everything was fantastic. It was the first visit for my wife and I, but it certainly won't be the last. Also, our server was fantastic. I don't recall her name, but she had a pronounced french accent, and impeccable timing. Cudos to her!"

"Found the restaurant too noisy to carry on a conversation.

There was also an inconsicency in food quality between parties at our table that had the same menu choice. They had the identical pasta choice (a rose colored sauce), and one had pasta that was dry (i.e. had almost no sauce on it), while the other person's was swimming in sauce."

"Our group of six enjoyed our dinner out. The steak and the lamb/bison duo were very good, as was the tiger prawn pasta. The seafood bake was tasty; however my daughter and husband thought that the "grey" meat (still not sure what it was??) in the dish was very fishy only detracted from the dish as a whole.

The server was very good and the staff extremely friendly. Well done!"

"It has been years since my last visit to Escoba. The comfort and ambiance are just as I remember from the old Penny Lane location. The menu has been updated and the level of food has increased immensely! Our Server was knowledgeable and polite. My husband and I both enjoyed the Lamb Duo and Seafood Bake! What a great way to spend Saturday night!"

"The food and atmosphere at Escoba are really great, but when we questioned the server and the manager why we had been charged $2.50 for a pop refill when we hadn't been warned that there would be a charge, they refused to take any responsibility and take the charge off the bill. We realize that it was a small charge, but a classy establishment should 1.) not charge for pop refills or at the very least inform the customer that there will be a charge, and 2.) graciously accept blame and take unwarranted charges off the bill. Unfortunately, a small thing like this can keep people from returning to a restaurant!"

"I've been to Escoba twice & I've enjoyed it both times. The food is different enough to be interesting but still okay for picky eaters. I like that they have a feature wine that they will let you taste & then decide if you want a glass. It pushes me to try wines that I might not otherwise."

"I had made a reservation 2 days in advance but still had to wait over 15 minutes in the cold, in a line-up that went out the door. There is no point in making a reservation if the staff cannot handle seating people in a timely manner. I had the same experience the last time I ate there. Alos, the very cramped quarters made it rather uncomfortable.
I will not be going back. I cannot afford to waste time like that during a work week."

"The food was very good. All four of us had different dishes and all were good. We started with a plate of baked spring rolls between us and they were great.

It was full and very loud. Although we did not have wine they seemed to have a robust wine list.

Our waitress tried to up-sell us on every decision which was annoying."

"Overall, I was very impressed. Starting with, I was one hr late, due to traffic, and I was still seated instantly. The service overall was exceptional. Our server was very attentive and the food was awesome! The price is a bit up there, but not unreasonable. I would not hesitate to go back and reccommend this for anyone planning a group event, birthday, date, etc... I am generally an easy going person, but I know what a good resturaunt is vs. the bad. This goes up as one of the greats of Calgary!"
