701 is a modern American restaurant with exquisite food framed by an elegant decor. Join us in our bar & lounge for our signature cocktails and small plates or dine with us in our sumptuous dining room. During the spring & summer, our patio is tucked onto the Navy Memorial plaza, with splashing fountains providing a very Parisian feel.

"I work across the street from 701 and I have been there for lunch on more than one occasion and I have the lunch to take too long. its as if there is one server for the entire restaurant. I like the food enough but at lunch sometimes I want to spend an hour, not a hour and 30 minutes or so. It's a DC classic but the Penn Quarter area has a lot of other great restaurants as well."

"Went for brunch. It was a special chef's tasting menu of 3 courses. My parents and I all tried different things, 9 in total (3 people X 3 courses). Everything was excellent! Great taste and presentation. Service was very good but not perfect - I would have preferred just a little more attention. If it's a beautiful day ask for outside seating."

"Disappointing treatment when midway through the appetizer two of five of the entrees ordered by the table (lobster) were announced as being unavailable because another table had also ordered them ahead of us, I would have expected more classy management given the overall good food and positive prior experiences, ie at least an opportunity to change drinks to accompany the new entree etc Instead this was treated very casually, below par for a restaurant with quality food."

"We took friends here and they liked it so well that they gave us a gift certificate for a return visit. The hot spring egg was a delicious starter and my companion liked the lentil soup. His roasted chicken was juicy and delicious. My gnocchi with oyster mushrooms and goat cheese fondue tasted divine, except the gnocchi were slightly too chewy. The toffee pudding was also delicious. Our waiter was gracious and attentive without being intrusive. He made an excellent wine recommendation that went very well with our food. A very nice experience."

"We were a little disappointed with this restaurant. It had come recommended but did not live up to our expectations. The service was good and the sommelier certainly knew his wines. The food was adequate some of our diners felt the portions were a little mean. The panna cotta dessert was absolutely tasteless - disappointing. On the whole we had a pleasant evening but dont feel we will be rushing back here on future visits to DC."

"This was my second visit to this establishment. While the menu and decor are quite appealing, there was something lacking in the delivery and service of this meal. I felt rushed and uncomfortable this time. This is a complete reversal of my previous visit, in December of last year, when it was much busier and the staff seemed to bend over backwads to make the experience memorable. On that occasion the steak was the best I'd ever gotten in a restaurant, the waiter was efficient,the seating was perfect, and the energy level was high. I hope that if I visit again these things return, or that will be my last visit."

"I came here for my girlfriend's 21st birthday, and was blown away when we arrived. The night before we went, I had placed a reservation online, and at the end there was an additional comments field. I mentioned in the text field that it was my girlfriend's 21st birthday tomorrow, and that I didn't know if they did anything special, but if they did, I would greatly appreciate it. When we arrived, one of the first things they did was bring out champagne for each of us! I really didn't expect this, and was even more astonished when the check showed that the champagne was on the house. Thank you so much 701 for making my girlfriend's 21st birthday the best it could have been!"

"This was our second time at 701-we had first tried it during Restaurant Week, liked the food and discovered that it was not as expensive as we had thought it would be. This time we came for the pre-Theater menu, a very good value at $32.
The carpaccio appetizer was extremely tasty, the entrees were perfect--the sauce on the ravioli was heavenly. Desserts were good, but not as good as the appetizers and entrees.
The room is beautiful--of course since we went early, the noise level was low. they do have live music several times a week.
Our server, Petra, was a delight and her assistants delivered the food quickly and correctly.
We will be back."

"We really like 701 Restaurant and have been many times in the last several years. We loved it the first few times we went: food was great, atmosphere was warm, service was friendly and appropriately solicitous. I'd say the quality of the food went down each successive time we went but I was pleased that it was totally back last Sunday night. Food was excellent. Service was good. Restaurant was fairly empty although we attributed that to the fact that it was Sunday night. Since our very favorite restaurant TenPenh is now gone, it would be great if 701 could become our new very favorite restaurant."

"The service was exceptional - educational and with a smile. I learned of a fairly substantial difference between the Moet and Chandon champaign of France and the firm's Chandon line from California. If you have to choose between Moet's Imperial and the Napa Chandon - go with Chandon.
The food at 701 was fantastic. Its my only regret I couldn't talk my companion into dessert."

The food was good, but not over the top great. The appetizers were very good. The best of the 4 were the crab spring rolls or the sauteed fois gras. The lamb and steak were well prepared and delicious. The rockfish, while popular, left a little to be desired. Skip all the desserts except the doughnuts. They are worth the calories.
The ambiance is modern and sleek. Jazz piano on Saturday night was a nice touch, but it did get a bit loud. If you're looking for a quiet evening ask to be seated away from the piano."

"We were so pleased to find the 701! The food was appealing to all -- including my foodie daughter -- and absolutely delicious but really moderately priced. They were able to accommodate a group of five easily and the service was spectacular: incredibly attentive wait staff but discrete and not annoying. I particularly valued how quiet it was: my elderly parents could actually hear and participate in the conversation. I cannot say enough good about it. We will definitely return to the 701 next time we're in DC. Next time we'll get there early enough to take advantage of their fabulous pre-theatre deal."

"701 was my favorite restaurant years ago when I worked downtown, but I had not eaten there in years. I was pleased to discover that it's still in my "top 10:" of DC area restaurants. I had the Scottish salmon, and it was perfect -- not overcooked and seasoned just right. My only complaint was our server who was a bit too "familiar." When she asked if we needed anything else, my response was "I'm good." She replied "I'm sure you are!" She said the same thing to my friend during a similar exchange later on. We both thought it was weird and a bit much."

Wine is a bit expensive but the pre-fix menu is moderately priced, with good selections available. Valet parking is offered, which is a good way to go in this crowded area."

"We picked 701 because it offered a pre-theater menu and was within walking distance of the Woolly Mammoth Theater. When our waiter introduced himself, he said he had seen our schedule and would be sure we were finished on time. As a result the service was very prompt but not hurried. Our 6:00 reservation allowed us just enough time, I would not try a later reservation.
The food from both the three course ($30.00) pre-theater menu and the regular dinner menu was excellent. My flat iron steak and my wife's duck were cooked perfectly. The vegetables were very tasty and worked well with the entre. The banana cream desert was sinful. As expected the drinks and wind added considerably to the cost. In all it was a great start to our evenin"

"Went for Easter brunch, it was a prix fixe menu. Ambiance was nice, contemporary but classic, they had live jazz piano and bass, but not overpowering. The wait staff were excellent, really great service. I was just disappointed with the food. It wasn't bad, I was just expecting wonderful given the location and quality of everything else. Prix fixe menu had a decent selection, and dishes sounded interesting. Presentation was decent, but not impressive. Food was only warm...cold by the time I finished, steak was tender but dry, hollandaise sauce did nothing to help, and it felt like my plate was missing something. Maybe it was b/c this was the brunch prix fixe, so I'd give it another shot. Coffee was delicious: French press, as it should be."
