Restaurant Reviews for The Harrison

The Harrison reservations The Harrison

355 Greenwich Street
New York, NY 10013

Opened by Jimmy Bradley in October 2001, this Tribeca favorite is a restaurant remarkably in tune with its neighborhood and the city at large. Featuring seasonal contemporary American cuisine from Chef Amanda Freitag and sincere hospitality in a handsome and casually elegant setting, The Harrison instantly makes you feel like you’ve come home. The restaurant also boasts a private dining room housed in its award-winning wine cellar, outdoor café with Hudson River views and a bar that begs to be dined at for a less formal evening. Be sure to try Freitag’s inspired Parmesan Fritters with Black Forest Ham and Smoked Mozzarella, Char Grilled Octopus with Fingerlings, Feta and Fresh Mint and a killer Pork Chop with Coco Beans, Pancetta, Escarole and Thyme.

Review 2 for The Harrison

Overall Rating 4.0 out of 5 (Very Good)
"The overall experience was very good. The waitstaff knew which dishes to recommend. Some dishes were much more spectacular than others. Thumbs up on the octopus and beet salad appetizers. Solid A for the cod and lamb, middling C for the trout. We had the table nearest to the door and the noise level in the room prevented all six at the table from hearing one another. The waitstaff couldn't have been better...even providing back massages at one point in the evening...really seemed intent on assuring that we had a great time."

Review 6 for The Harrison

Overall Rating 3.0 out of 5 (Good)
"Don't go to The Harrison to dine. go if you like great food, but not if you like to have your wishes ignored by rude waiters and agressive busboys. We could not get the waiter to accept our desire to have a lesiurely dinner, and he was an absolute snob at our wine choice, which was tripled wine store $, not usual in this economy. When we mentioned the poor service on the way out, we got the feeling we weren't the first to complain. You'll eat well, but you won't be dining gracioulsy, which you should be at this type of restaurant. Too many other good choices in NYC to go back or recommend."

Review 12 for The Harrison

Overall Rating 4.0 out of 5 (Very Good)
"No real complaints on the food or service. The Sunday Sauce was excellent over the meats. The only thing that annoyed me were the
kiddie sized glasses. Even though the bus/wait staff was quick in filling the water glasses, they are way too small. They use the same sized glass for soda which is hardly a thirst quencher.

Review 13 for The Harrison

Overall Rating 4.0 out of 5 (Very Good)
"The only downfall for me was the extremely deafening noise level. It was difficult, at best, to hear my dining companion's conversation without leaning into the table. This is not a place to take a friend you haven't seen in awhile, unless you are disinterested in what they have to say. The food (our main course was the skate) was outstanding. Our waiter, wonderful! However, I couldn't wait to leave. My ears were ringing from the unabating noise level which made me forgo dessert--we went to a nearby coffeehouse to have an audible conversation."

Review 18 for The Harrison

Overall Rating 3.0 out of 5 (Good)
"A always, Amanda Freitag and her staff at The Harrison performed superbly. As a "problem" patron I appreciate the care taken with my food and it is a great pleasure to arrive and be told "Amanda has planned your menu for you". The wine was excellent and the service warm but not intrusive. One of the highlights is gettint to have abrife visit with Amanda, no matter how busy the kitchen is and on the night we were there, it was very very busy. The Harrison is our favorite spots for celebrations as well as dinner with good friends"

"We had a good selection of apps and entrees - none of which were beyond adequate. Review 25 for The Harrison

Overall Rating 5.0 out of 5 (Outstanding)
"Wonderful food: fresh, wholesome and simply but elegantly conceived and prepared under the direction of chef Amanad Freitag. Standaouts were the avocado and hearts of palm salad, the arctic char and addictively good duck fat fries. Wine list was great, and offered some excellent choices at moderate prices. Atmosphere was very romantic, and the place had a friendly neighborhood buzz, populated by enthusiastic foodies. Only drawback was the high noise level. Prices were quite reasonable for food of this calibre. This is definitely a place to which I will return!"

Review 29 for The Harrison

Overall Rating 4.0 out of 5 (Very Good)
"Our dining experience was excellent, except for the fact that our waiter left before we ordered dessert and did not inform us that he would no longer be our server. No one did. We were ignored for quite some time while we had our dessert menus, until we flagged someone else down, who told us that our waiter was gone for the evening. Another waiter then promptly came to our rescue and did a fine job (as did the first waiter before he disappeared). It was very bizarre."

"It was my first dining experience at the Harrison. Well prepared food and a welcoming, cozy dining environment. Perfect for a cold winter night. I thought the service was attentive but not over the top. Overall it was a pleasant dining experience but not one that was outstanding. Given the number of dining choices in the city, it is not likely my first choice for another occasion."

Review 38 for The Harrison

Overall Rating 5.0 out of 5 (Outstanding)
"The Harrison is well on its way to being my favorite restaurant in the city. A welcoming and comfortable room that, even when full to the brim, never intrudes. A charming, well-informed and helpful staff. And a menu of beautifully conceived and executed dishes that make you smile from pure bliss. On one visit, what sounded like it was going to be a simple piece of cod was one of the most delicious and satisfying meals I ever ate. More recently, I had a grilled pork chop that was delicately delectable and mushroom arancini that was like nothing anyone's Nonna ever made. And the duck fat fries...well, it's not a choice; you absolutely have to order them. PS: they support Restaurant Week whole heartedly."

Review 39 for The Harrison

Overall Rating 4.0 out of 5 (Very Good)
"Very pleasant experience at the Harrison. It is a warm and friendly restaurant, despite its upscale vibe. The restaurant week menu came with generous portions, and there was a very nice San Giovese offered for $29/bottle. Service was efficient, if slightly abrupt. The only mistep on the menu was the incomprehensible popcorn ice cream, though the accompanying chocolate panne cotta was very good."

Review 41 for The Harrison

Overall Rating 4.0 out of 5 (Very Good)
"Amanda Freitag must be running her kitchen very well. All of the food was executed flawlessly with perfect seasoning and perfect cook-time. Where some dishes lacked in imagination, they were made up for in flavor. The kitchen shows it's skill in dishes such as the English cut lamb and the skate with braised cabbage. The menu is varied in its offered proteins as well as in meatless options. The staff were very helpful and charming. Wonderful location."

"We were a table of four. The grilled octopus was great for a starter and
my main course of the char was prepared fabulously. We were all pleased with
our selections. Our waitress was most accomodating and made the dining experience
all the more pleasurable. We were in a corner so really couldn't judge the noise.

Review 56 for The Harrison

Overall Rating 4.0 out of 5 (Very Good)
"Everyone was so nice! We started with the filleted grilled sardines. They are not as large as in Portugal but the flavor was so wonderful it compensated. Our entres were skate and liver. The food was enquisite and portions were large (I think it was a whole skate wing) - we both took food home. The wait staff was pleasant and informed. Knowledgable suggestions for wine and beer were made when asked. The ceilings are low and the noise level high but the layout is such you do not feel crowded. The small bar was very busy. Near the ladies room in the basement is the winecellar. A private party was in there looking like they were having a great time. We would both go back again"

Review 58 for The Harrison

Overall Rating 3.0 out of 5 (Good)
"Enjoyed the feel of the restaurant--cozy, warm lighting, tables set far enough apart to have intimate conversation. Menu was not that inspired and the food was fair, considering the prices. We enjoyed the country salad, topped with perfectly poached egg. However, when it came to our main course, we both ordered the special of the night (on the waiter's recommendation)--Strip Steak. The steaks came, cooked rare, as we requested, but a little fattier than we expected. We also would have appreciated a tip from the waiter that the steaks were so large, we could have shared our main course. Other than that service was friendly and well-timed."

Review 61 for The Harrison

Overall Rating 3.0 out of 5 (Good)
"While a group of us generally enjoyed our food at dinner last Saturday night, we got off to a bumpy start with cocktails as the restaurant apparently does not carry premium spirits and their wine selection is also somewhat limited. When asked about this, the waiter told us that the restaurant had "taken a stand" against their alcohol distributors by deciding not to carry certain brands. I've never heard of this. While the food was enjoyed by most, 2 of our 6 did not care for their dinner. Probably won't return."

Review 64 for The Harrison

Overall Rating 3.0 out of 5 (Good)
"The food came highly recommended to me... but upon dining at the Harrison, I was disappointed. The Pork Chop was excessively salty, topped with even saltier bacon, and the beans with escarole were bland and just added to the salt predicament. I ordered one glass of syrah, which was nice. The service was very good- hostess was accomodating, as well as our waiter, even the bus boy! The juke box was to my liking (the Beatles, George Harrison, Led Zeppelin, Queen were playing), and it wasn't so loud that it drowned out the conversation, but rather added a fun element to our dinner. We also ordered dessert which I paired with a muscat... it was forgettable. It wasn't too sweet, but it wasn't too flavorable either. I probably won't return."

Review 65 for The Harrison

Overall Rating 4.0 out of 5 (Very Good)
"The Harrison has a hip, yet classy atmosphere with a fantastic mix of all my favorite music from the 80's. The food was excellent overall and service was courteous and efficient. All the appetizers we tried were yummy. The troutlings were perfectly done, mixed green salad was fresh and tasty, sardines and a pasta with a lamb ragu were delicious. For main courses we tried the lamb and salmon special. The lamb was an odd cut, but tasty and perfectly done. The salmon was fresh and enjoyed by our companions. The wine list is extensive with many pricey bottles, but the sommelier recommended a very economically priced bottle from Italy which was delicious. "Birthday Cake" was chocolate and yummy. Chocolate Eclair was really good. Try it!"

"The food and service were excellent. They went out of their way to alter their fixed menue (specific to New Year's Eve)to accomodate my wife who has severe food alergies. And they didn't lie, because she did not have any reaction the following day, New Years 2010. They went out of their way to accomodate me when at the last minute I asked to move my reservation up earlier, and they were crowded - fortunately. It is good to see a crowd in our local restaurants."

Review 74 for The Harrison

Overall Rating 4.0 out of 5 (Very Good)
"The Harrison is one of the next best things to a Paris Bistro. The food is always wonderful bordering on the sensational at times. Great and truly different appetizers, wonderful mains in a warm and inviting setting in downtown NYC. The bar pours a nice drink and the wine list is reasonable without going overboard. We had Char, Octopus and other wonderful things from the sea along with a duck dish, truly a priceless experience, as always."

Review 78 for The Harrison

Overall Rating 4.0 out of 5 (Very Good)
"Had high expectation being in the food/beverage industry....Very good restaurant! Food was really good. The beet salad was amazing!!! We had the bacon wrapped trout and hanger steak for our entrees. Trout was outstanding and the hanger steak was o.k. very chewy and not that much flavor. Wine list was very good!
would definitely recommend to friends. Service was good. could have given us a little more time between courses

Review 82 for The Harrison

Overall Rating 5.0 out of 5 (Outstanding)
"We are from Australia, so our Xmas eve dinner at The Harrison was really Xmas day for us, due to the time zone. The service was impeccable, the food absolutely delicious. We couldn't have had a better experience. Everybody there treated us so well and was of the utmost standard, but I must say that our waiter was exceptional, not only in his attentiveness, the calibre of his judgement, the in depth knowledge of the menu but also by making exactly the right suggestions when we required advice. We will never forget our Xmas there."

Review 84 for The Harrison

Overall Rating 5.0 out of 5 (Outstanding)
"I'm from SF Bay Area and was looking for a restaurant close to the hotel we were staying at in the TriBecca Neighborhood. Since we just had a gorgeous snow storm, it would have to be a short walk, but we wanted something special. I checked Open Table, and after reviewing a few, thought Harrison fit the bill. It was one of the most outstanding evenings EVER! From the greeting at the door, the ambiance, the excellent wait staff and most importantly, to the outstanding food and great wine list, we had one of the best, and most memorable dining experiences ever. We found out that it is the sister restaurant to the Red Cat in SoHo, too! (A friend had recommended that, but it was too far to walk and could not get reservations on Sat) Thnx OT"

Review 89 for The Harrison

Overall Rating 5.0 out of 5 (Outstanding)
"The Harrison is a local classic destination with creative dishes served in manageable portions. The wine list is superb and there is always a good bottle of champagne available for the special occasion. Despite the Tribeca zip code, the pricing is reasonable. There is a little buzz in the atmosphere which provides for an upbeat mood. Staff is friendly and professional from door to table. Money spent here is worth it."

"We had 2 guest from out of town and wanted a restaurant in the hood. I for some reason had never been to the Harrison. Right from the start the food was amazing . The service was seamless they were very attentive without being pushy. I can't wait till my next visit..."

Review 96 for The Harrison

Overall Rating 4.0 out of 5 (Very Good)
"I have grown to love this place. The entire staff is very good from the warm and welcoming hostesses to the attentive waitstaff. The space is attractive with a great vibe to it. The beet salad appetizer is not to be missed - very special! Our group appreciated both butter and olive oil served with the crusty bead. Two of us had a pork special which was delicious and the others had the liver entree which they also said was excellent. Although I don't eat liver, the presentation was beautiful and the crispy polenta side with it (which I tasted) was great. We shared a brownie ice cream sandwich for dessert and it, too, was very good but quite rich. The Harrison has really hit its stride. I will be back soon!"
