Rosa Mexicano - First Avenue
Our flagship location opened its doors on First Avenue in 1984. From the moment you arrive, old world charm permeates your dining experience through authentic Mexican colors and rustic folk art. Traditional amate gods greet you at the front entrance and brightly colored papel picado hangs from the ceiling. Corn tortillas are made on site and an exposition grill further seduces your senses. With its warm ambiance and outstanding cuisine, this Rosa Mexicano location has remained a perennial New York favorite for over 25 years.

"Don't get me wrong the food at Rosa Mexicano is good. However you can get just as good if not even better food for a helluva lot less at other Mexican restaurants all over the city. To add insult to injury you would think at those prices the portions would be huge, absolutely not. I felt cheated, so does not warrant a repeat visit in my book. I rather hit Jackson Heights or Spanish Harlem and check out some REAL Mexican cuisine."

"First time booking with open table! Easy and the food was great just as we hoped it would be! Flavor filled food that was prepared timely and with excellent service. Complementary dessert because we had mentioned on our Open Table on line reservation that it was our anniversary! A very nice touch! Will definitely be back."

"Let's be honnest, I m really not a specialist of Mexican food and I don't know what is "typical" or not, yet what I got it this restaurant was far from what I got in the other mexican restaurants I went before ! Ok I admit we began with a guacamole, prepared right in front of us that was perfect way to begin but the Mexico City Street Salad with Barbecued Tuna Loin was outstanding ! Fresh, tasty, Piquante but not too much, just perfect ! And according to the reaction of my GF while eating her Shrimp Brochette, this was a winner too ! This experience was worth the 30 minutes walk we took to go there from our Hotel !"

"I thought the vibe of the place was excellent. It was packed as my wife and I left for the evening around 1030pm. Nice ambiance, great service, tequila and mixed drink options were great (only a minimal number of beers however).
Reason for lower food rating: Unfortunately I don't remember the particular chicken dish I ordered, but my first uninhibited impression was "this tastes like somehing out of the freezer from the supermarket"..... and it skewed the rest of the experience. Refried beans were good, and guacamole was very good. I didn't inform the waiter of my impression (my bad - I like to be honest/constructive but didn't wnant to make a fuss that night). Good experience otherwise & I hope it was just a one-off."

"Having been here several times, I remember the food as being better. While the tableside guacamole was tasty, it lacked the deep flavor I was craving. The basket of chips provided with the guacamole was half crumbs or small pieces. At the price charged, I would expect fresh warm tortillas. The entrees were interesting and tasty, however, these also lacked the punch expected and the value seemed underwhelming. Duck mole had good flavor but did not have the heat advertised on the menu. This dish only had meat from one duck leg, which left me wanting more. Crab enchiladas had some nice flavors but again lacked value. Mixed grill, empanadas and pork belly tacos were all okay but did not wow anyone at the table. Overall,enjoyable but poor value"

"Had dinner on a Sunday night with three girlfriends. We got the famous guacamole, which was delectable and nice strong margaritas. Our entrees were great, but the whole experience was outstanding due to our waiter Jay. He was the best server I've had in a long time! He let us take our time, made suggestions and even made a special drink for my friend. Jay was the perfect combination of knowledge, attentiveness, and respect. "I've been a regular Rosa Mexicano diner for years. The food is always delicious however this time I wasn't thrilled with entree. It was OK, but not up to the stardard of Rosa Mexicana. In addition, the house white wine watery. The vibe felt a bit 'chain-like', rehersed and lacked personality.
This visit won't prevent me from going again but I will think twice before booking."

"My boyfriend & I went here for our "post-Valentines Day" dinner. The service could have been better (saturday night after Valentine's Day). The guacamole was AMAZING!! I would definitely go back for that alone. My boyfriend enjoyed the crab enchiladas very much and I had the grilled filet mignon. Otherwise than that, we had a great time. I would definitely go back but not on a saturday night."

"Service was not attentive and was really slow on this visit. Food was not outstanding. Our seating right behind the bar stools in the bar area was not desirable. Hubby did not like the menu, although I did. Highlight of the evening was receiving a jar of fruit dessert sauce and chocolates for Valentine's Day. A fan of the former Zarela restaurant, I'm searching for a similar one. This is not it."

"Had a reservation. Arrived and was seated on time. MAitre D' was welcoming and friendly. Decor is warm and intimate. Wait staff was attentive. The guacamole, made tableside was delicious. Sangria was refreshing- I never thought to add cucumbers to the recipe I use. We had the Chicken Tortilla Pie and Carne Asada which were perfecto. We never felt rushed or pressured.
It was a most enjoyable meal.
Having been to both the 62nd street location and the First Ave. location, I think the First Ave.spot is cozier. The newer restaurant is glitzier."

"We came here to celebrate my husband's birthday and had a lovely dinner. Our very knowledgable server described many dishes and knew the menu inside out. I had the margarita which was perfect and we shared guacamole and crab empanadas. For main course, we had the Chicken Tortilla Pie and the Grilled Salmon. Both dishes were very flavorful and balanced. For dessert, we shared the warm churros which came out in a paper bag and then served with three sauces. Soo good!! Thanks Rosa for a wonderful evening."
