"The whole staff was very good to my girl friend and I. It felt as if everyone knew it was our 7 year anniversary which was nice. Whats really unique is that all the workers looked happy to be there. Normally from experience you notice some workers would be unhappy. The room was nice, and everything was really clean. The food is very good. So good it makes me want to try the whole menu. I had the salmon and my girl friend had the prime rib. Portion was perfect even though we ate only half of our food. It was nice that one of the staff helped boxed and bagged our left overs. Overall the place is wonderful, the staff is very friendly even the valet drivers too, and the food is too good. Will go back again."

"The staff and food - all excellent. Yorkshire pudding is the best!

Only two complaints: 1. We had an 8pm reservation, arrived at 7:10pm, and were not seated until 8:15pm. Didn't seem very reasonable to me.

2. It was cold and rainy outside so I was in a turtleneck. Inside there were fireplaces everywhere so it was significantly warmer. I was sweating the whole time we were there. But if I knew this beforehand, I would have just dressed a lot cooler and would have enjoyed the experience a lot more."

"The food was outstanding and the service good. The only thing I didn't like was our table. We sat at a big booth that we share with two other guys. We had planned something more private for our anniversary.

"I Have Been Going Here For Going On 40 Years...I Am 50. Every Time I Look Forward To It, And It Only Gets Better. The Food Is Phenomenal, The Service, From The Bar Staff To The Staff That Greets You, To Our Server, Miro, It Is Treatment Like You Usually, Only Can Hope For .A Reservation Through Open Table Is So Easy,On The Computer And Done. "My husband and I have been planning to try this place for years and finally got around to it tonight. We absolutely loved our dining experience here. From the cocktails to the service to the fabulous food...it was all we expected and more. This is not the place to go for anything other than prime rib (I mean, really..check out the name of the restaurant). They start with a very nice salad and move on to the entree with your choice of cut of prime rib from this marvelous stainless steel cart. Both style of potatoes are delicious and if you don't like spinach, the corn is really very good. We had a nice bottle of wine and then a very good creme brulee for dessert. The service was top notch and we were never left wanting. We'll return!"

"We love the idea of this restaurant, as they carve your prime rib right next to your table. While I normally do not eat prime rib, this restaurant will make anyone change their mind, as the food was excellent. We had the creamed spinach and mashed potatoes as our two side dishes. The creamed spinach was not too heavy and complemented the prime rib perfectly. They have an excellent wine selection and we were treated very well throughout the evening. Overall, we had an amazing experience and for the amount of food you receive, it was definitely worth the cost. The only odd thing about the restaurant for us was that the people next to us on one side were wearing t-shirts and jeans, while others were in full suits."

"I had seen the restaurant featured on Anthony Bourdain - No Reservations and decided to try it out on a visit to San Francisco. The best I could rate the restaurant was good. I have certainly had better prime rib. The selection of vegetables was limited to 2 cream corn or creamed spinach! I was not impressed with the concept of only prime rib and one fish dish. This restaurant is surely only for a limited audience. I will have to think twice before taking an Anthony Bourdain recommendation1"

"The food is fantastic. Very tender meat and a lot of food for your buck. The workers are friendly and do an outstanding job at keeping you happy. "We look forward to our annual visit to House of Prime Rib for my ex's birthday--been coming since our daughter was 5 (she's 15 now). For the food and especially the service, the prices are wonderful. I LOVE the salad, creamed spinach, Yorkshire pudding, baked potato--hey even skipping the wonderful prime rib I would be happy. I used to mix my own horseradish sauce (w/ sour cream) because I didn't like theirs but now they give you 3 choices. The desserts seem to have improved since our last visit--now terrific. They take the party's photo for birthdays --the only Poloroid camera left in existence? And if you really want it, you can have seconds on prime rib (I believe if you order the Henry VIII cut). LOVE this place."

"I love House of Prime Rib, however this might be the last time I will dine here, despite how much I love the food. We waited for our food for over 40 minutes. Normally, I wouldn't care, the food is worth the wait. What got me so upset was, our party of 3 was there maybe 10-15 minutes before this party of 6 sat down and they got their food before us. The table next to us got their food right after we got our food and they probably sat down when the party of 6 got their food."

"If you're going for superlative beef, with outstanding service this is a wonderful restaurant. The menu is extremely limited, but, what is offered is absolutely top drawer. If you or your guests or companions do not care for beautifully aged, perfectly cooked, flavorful, tender prime rib, consider another restaurant; with that caveat, this restaurant is a wonderful dining experience. The service is absolutely flawless, the staff is discreet, but attentive, helpful and friendly but not intrusive. The ambiance is a wonderfully fun time warp from a gentler and more genteel era. The wine list is quite good, very reasonably priced compared to other local restaurants. All in all a great place to have a fantastic meal of excellent prime rib."

"The food is always great here. Granted its not someplace to go everyday its definitely good for special occasions. The Prime Rib was beautifully prepared and the salad was large and filling. There is no way you will go home hungry. Our waitress that evening wasn't the best. She only came to take our order, deliver or order, and drop off the check. I saw other tables' wait staff check on them multiple times but ours was not so attentive. It's ok though, the food was what we came for."

"Perfect service- -our party of 7 all agreed; no rushing even though it was mobbed; our waiter(think he was Tang)was there the minute we wanted anything, but never overdid it. Food, of course, was excellent as it always is. Prime Rib at it's best. A lovely family evening.

Only negative: THE NOISE LEVEL! ! ! Had to scream in order to hear those across the table. Your Noise Rating (above) should be adjusted to include this. Energetic is hardly what we'd call it."

"The house of prime rib is the best place to eat in the world. From the food all the way down to the staff it is empecable.If you have not tryed it make your self a bucket list ( like the movie ) and put it on there 10 times......a must do when you are in the San Frisisco area.. We have been going there for many years and it has not changed at all. Still #1 in my books Great company and wonderful place to eat, and a great reason to come to San Frisisco. Thanks Ray Platt"

"The menu is the exact opposite of complex. There are choices to be made. Size of the prime rib serving you'd like. Mashed or baked. Corn or spinach. That's it. The hardest part is sorting through the extensive wine list.

The food was excellent. As was the service. It's not a place for vegetarians. If you lead a meat-centered life, you must make the pilgrimage at least once in your lifetime."

"The dinner as always was excellent and the remodelled men's room is quite an improvement over the claustrophobic broom closet that preceded it. The most annoying thing was the intrusive 1960's canned music which was WAY TOO LOUD. Something quieter in the nature of a backround piano would be much more appropriate for a clientele of the widest age spectrum of perhaps any restaurant in San Francisco."

"Anybody who complains about this place must already be in a bad mood when they enter. The food and service were outstanding. The place does not pretend to be a dark, secluded,overstuffed booth dining experience and if that is what you are looking for look elsewhere. But if you are looking for great food and great service from everyone from the bartenders to the busboys, then this is your place."

"The food at HOPR is always wonderful. If you're in the mood for prime rib, no other restaurant comes close. My only "nit" is I've had the same waiter on my last 2 visits and I feel very rushed. He might as well just say "I need to turn this table to make the most in tips that I possibly can so hurry up, eat and get out." Next time, if I'm seated in this server's section, I'll request another table."

"Everything was very good. Except... I had requested a quiet area on the reservation form. I explained that my elderly father was hard of hearing. We were seated right by the front door and the bar! Huge, constant traffic, loud bar patrons, and street noise with the opening and closing door of the door made conversation very difficult!"

"We took my mom for her 61st birthday - she hadn't been there in 42 years, but it was still as wonderful as she remembered if not better! Our server was spectacular - her name is April ;) Every time I go to this restaurant it is ALWAYS the BEST dining experience. Everything is always perfect, down to the chilled salad fork. My partner worked in food service for 15 years and she always says that the service here is always the BEST service she's ever experienced in her entire life and I agree 100%!!! Even better than the best restaurant in Paris, France! Go San Francisco! The staff at the House of Prime Rib could teach the rest of the world a thing or two about how to run a restaurant with precision! And the prime rib ... EXQUISITE!!!"

"I'd not been to the House of Prime Rib for years.
A family member wanted to try it, so we did.
I think the prices are outrageous and the noise is way to distracting.
The service person was really super.
Clearly, they have a formula that works and my opinions aren't going to alter that.
The fact that I probably won't be returning anytime soon, will also have little impact, since it was very difficult to get a reservation in the first place.

"I have been coming to the House I think since the 70's. Our family all come there aunts uncles cousins and friends and we are always telling people about this fantastic place.
All 3 of my adult children now go and bring their friends. There is so much history there and the service next to the food is what makes the House so special. I have 8 brothers and sisters and so far 4 of us have celbrated our 50th birthdays there.
This will always be the place to recommend and go.

"The food and service was outstanding. I had the King Henry Cut with creamed corn and mashed potatoes. The mashed potatoes were a little runny for my liking, but they were still pretty good. Next time I will get the baked potatoe. Everything else from the salad to the creme broulee for desert. I have been dreaming about their food since I went there for the first time this past Friday night. I am definitely going back and I am going to get seconds this time. If I was on deathrow, this would definitely be my request for a last meal."

"I was not at all thrilled at the house of prime rib and will not eat there again!!! The prime rib was not seasoned, it was BLAN !!! The prime rib was tender yes, but needed something else. For the amount of money we spent there I would have rather had gone to Ruth Chris up the street than this place. The noise was LOUD, I could not hear what my spouse had to say and she was sitting right next to me!!!!"

"A good choice for great prime rib with all the fixings at a reasonable price. Unfortunately the management is too focused on turning tables to provide that personal touch. Given the number of birthdays and anniversaries witnessed, perhaps that is just too much to ask. I called the restaurant the day of my reservation to pre-order a surprise dessert for my husband's birthday and was told to speak to the maitre d' upon check in. (Note: Expect to wait for a table even with a reservation as this place is always packed, especially with tourists). Tried to explain three times that I wanted to take care of it prior to arriving, but even the manager shut me down. When we got there, the maitre d' told me to order through the waiter. Not impressed."

"Our family was celebrating a birthday on our recent visit to House of Prime Rib. This was my second visit to the restaurant, and we had our two children ages 5 1/2 and 11 with us. The service was superlative, and our waiter made sure that we were well informed and well taken care of. He gave us an excellent wine recommendation and entertained our daughter with his antics as he dressed the salad table side. "My husband and I have been dining here, at the House of Prime Rib, for many years and will never get tired of it! The quality of their Prime Rib is wonderful. Their waitstaff are great and you can tell that they take pride in their work and they enjoy it. Whether you are dining here for two or with a group, the atmosphere is warm and welcoming. "Had requested an "good"table, two weeks ago, and after being seated nearly a half hour past our reservation, we were placed in a corner, near the swinging shutters to the kitchen , with all the tray stands at my back. Asked to move, and they moved us to only a slightly better table. The room we were in is small, so the Cart does not come to your table, they bring your plate to you . Sad as half the fun of HPR , is watching them carve table side and one on one service. REALLY REALLY LOUD. We could not really enjoy each other. Our waiter was kind, but had way too many tables and large parties to give the type of service we usually have had for the past 20+ years. This was a special night our 10th Wedding Anniversary , VERY disappointed."

"My family and I were so excited to go to the House of Prime Rib for our yearly San Francisco vacation. Our reservation was 7:00 and we were not seated until 7:40 which meant we spent way too much money in the bar which is something I suspect they do on purpose. The salad and all of the sides were just as I remembered - delicious. But the real disappointment was the prime rib. I ordered the small serving and believe me, it was really small. My husband's regular portion was very small, also.
Sorry House of Prime Rib, my meal wasn't worth the $40.00 I paid and we will have to find a new favorite place to eat while in the city."

"Had dinner with another couple on Sunday....fabulous as always (we try to go at least once a year but it's been much longer). Have never had a bad meal and it has that "old San Francisco" appeal and charm. This time seemed even better, not as crowded or noisey and the service was impeccable. Were able to sit at the bar, a first! Usually it's standing room only - bartender was very personnable and made a fantastic manhattan. Price is very reasonable for the great food, atmosphere, location....always a good choice! The fact that valet parking is available is another plus!"

I felt stupid for not knowing what comes with the entree, not knowing to take a chilled salad fork, and not knowing what yorkshire pudding was. She could have been nicer to steak novices like us. My only real complaint is that the steamed spinach that I ordered (because the creamed spinach has bacon in it) was so salty that it was inedible. Most people wouldn't order that anyway, so no big deal."

"Always a pleasure to dine here. It's been a couple of years since my last visit .. last night's excursion reminded me why I love the House of Prime Rib. I brought 4 friends (HoPR rookies) to celebrate a birthday .. everyone left with a smile. The service is always outstanding and the food was top-notch. I prefer the English Cut (a bit thinner) .. and the creamed spinach side to the creamed corn. (The table agreed that the corn was lackluster.)

Great place to go to when you really want to feast on some delicious prime rib with all the fixings on the side. "the noise was uncomfortably loud, the table was crowded, the wait to get seated, even with a reservation was excessive. When making the online reservation, in the section that asks about notes for the maitre'd, I mentioned that one of the party was an elderly person with a cane. That was not attended to at all, and no effort was made to help my elderly father crawl past the overgrown plant that grew out into the walkway (which was already very narrow). This place is very much over-rated, tries to pack people in like sardines, and the food is just mediocre. I will say that our waiter was outstanding, and was very attentive."

"Arrived 5 mins early for our reservation and was seated right on time @ our 5:30pm seating. Our server Stephen was attentive and business-like. Both service and food were excellent. We asked for extra corn rolls and even though they ran out temporary, but they did remember to bring us that when the next batch was readied. "My husband and I were in San Francisco for our honeymoon and had seen the restaurant featured on Anthony Bourdain's "No Reservations" so we decided to give it a shot. We showed up a little earlier than our reservation so that we could have a drink in the lounge. He was impressed with his gin martini and I had a really nice red wine. Once we were seated for dinner our waiter was excellent. The food was wonderful. I had the "City Cut" prime rib and my husband had the "King Henry IIIV," the smallest and biggest cuts respectively. We both had the baked potato, creamed spinach and Yorkshire pudding. On a friend's recommendation we also had the Creme Brulee for dessert. Everything was fantastic and we would recommend the restaurant to anyone."

It has 3 kinds of lettuce, watercress, beets, egg and pimento with the house dressing which is a sherry french sort of flavor. "House of Prime Rib is an old standby that everyone loves. The "atmosphere" is a lively, private club where everyone is having a really good time (and always having lots of birthdays, if the singing is any clue). House of Prime Rid does one thing, prime rib, but does that very well, indeed. It is also one of the best bargains in town. For less than $40 per person, you get their wonderful house salad, a generous portion of prime rib any way you like it, Yorkshire pudding, potatoes (either mashed or baked with all the trimmings), and creamed spinach or corn. I try to go to House of Prime Rib once or twice a year and am never disappointed."

"We were disappointed in the minature booth, we hardly had room to move much less fit all the dishes on the table. The mashed potatoes were runny, my baked potato was tiny and the end cut prime rib was tiny compared to the regular cut. We got one ice cream scoop for our anniversary dessert, last year it was a nice dessert for two. Our reservation was 9:00 and it was 9:45 before we were seated.

We'll probably go elsewhere next year."

"No problem with seating, service, sides. Only negative was the prime rib itself; "gummy" texture and tasted sour, sort of a mildewey taste. Also lots of bone and fat which meant the "large" King slice was really a small slice. I live in the East Bay and would rather go now to Outback in Pinole as it has free parking, is less hassle, and has better tasting and more tender prime rib. "The prime rib is definitely one of the best I've had (though my friend's cut was not as good -- lots of tendon near the bone). The service is very cheerful, but the wait to get a table and service are extremely slow. We had reservations for 6pm, but were not seated until 6:40pm. We did not get our wine until past 7:15pm. Very slow. But the meat is definitely good, and servers are very cheerful."

"I lived in San Francisco for 10 years, and moved away 22 years ago. Every trip to S.F. I always include a dinner at House of Prime Rib. It's a S.F. institution--great food, good service and a reasonable price. But after our last visit, I'll never go back. I don't know what happened. The food was cold. The service was horrible. They are selling $48. bottles of Chardonnay that have "turned" to tourists that don't know any better. (The Chardonnay was a 2000 vintage, way too old for a white wine. After they opened 2 bad bottles for us, we chose a bottle that they also sold by the glass figuring that it would at least be new enough to be drinkable). I took 2 guests, and I was embarassed. What a shame! Used to be great..."

"I'm from Florida, my wife is from San Francisco. She has always told me how good HOPR is. So,we make it back to the Bay area for Christmas. We get there and it's packed, we have one drink at the bar and our table is ready for 9 people, fantastic! We sit down and are immediately attended to by friendly staff. The atmosphere is festive (for Christmas it's great, maybe not for a romantic outing) I absolutely LOVE it! I have the King Henry cut of prime rib which is the size of a Fred Flinstone brontosoraus steak. It's melt in your mouth delicious! If no one was around I might have tried to eat another one ......I swear ! Watch out for the horseradish .....it's hot but delicious also! Probably the best prime rib I've ever eaten!!!"

"This is one of our favorite restaurants and of course the food was phenomenal as usual. But my one complaint would be our waiter and hostess both seemed a bit too stressed and it rubbed off on their service.
