Sascha's 527 Cafe is the creation of Sascha Wolhandler and Steve Suser. After more than 20 years as Baltimore's stylish boutique caterer, they have taken a charming 19th century Mt. Vernon townhouse topped with an antique crystal chandelier, dramatic 16' ceilings, warm lighting and candlelit tables and presented a look and a feel that Style Magazine has called "drop dead sexy". Sascha's menu is a comfortable blend of great flavors, both local and global. Organic and natural ingredients are used extensively to bring only the best and healthiest to the table. Small plates, called taste plates, offer a wide selection of grilled, pan seared and lightly fried foods, from bison to lobster, Mediterranean to Deep South. Large plates, from Free Range to Filet and freshly created and prepared specials of the day, compliment the dinner menu. It's a feast for the senses.
"Dined at Sascha's to celebrate my step-daugher's 18th birthday with her boyfriend and mother. The food was very good and misses excellent just barely. The mussels were the best I've had, and were prepared in a smoked bacon-butter sauce to remember. Birthday girl is vegan and had plenty of flavorful options. Prices are reasonable given quality. The wait staff we had was poor. She was slow and inattentive. Even knowing that it was a special birthday and being told twice, no acknowledgment was offered. My fiancé who is always generous insisted a 10% tip be left. Major complaint with OpenTable; this is the 2nd time that I have written in the Special Request section and had the restaurant fail to attend to it. Do restaurants even read them?"

"Fun atmosphere, quiet tables even though the tables are close together. You never felt like one table was on top of another. The funky breadstick and olive/pickle offering was delish. Signature drinks were tasty and the taste plate meals were exceptional. The crab beignets were out of this world!"

"I always tell people. Go to Sascha's for the drinks and the ambiance because the food is just "eh."
However, I have never received poor service until I dined their last week. I was served by an older woman with tattoos who knew nothing about the menu and was peeved when asked, took our drink menu away before we were done looking at it, was surly, inconsistent, and messed up the credit cards when she rang our orders in incorrectly.
However the cocktails are amazing as always and the ambiance is fantastic."

"The noise level is too loud! It is good for a BAD date but otherwise, difficult for good conversation. This should be corrected, especially since it is by the Peabody where sound, music and acoustics are a must!Waitress was overly busy which meant that she could not be allowed to show the customers the proper level of politeness.....it was not her fault....she was overworked!"

"we enjoyed our dinner.. Service was good and food was good too..my only criticisms are: the soup trio was not that great. The mushroom soup was the only one we liked. And the tacos were too spicy for me, but not my partner. The beinnets were amazing and my cocktail of the menu was also very good. And the calamari was okay. It was a little dark for my taste, but my partner found it pleasing."

"Great decor and display of modern art. Food was ok but nothing was "spectacular" on any of our guests plates. despite being a sunny day, the restaurant was so dark we had to pull out our phones to use as flash lights to read the menu and I couldn't see to cut the fat off of my prime rib (which was great after all of the work! But my sides were inedible-cauliflower was burnt and the grand duchess potatoes were hockey pucks. ) Overall, it wouldn't be my first pick when I'm in Baltimore again."

"I really liked the ambiance of the restaurant. The service was OK as was the food. I had prime rib, which was really good, but the potatoes were extremely salty."

"There was a large party there the night we were there so it was very noisie. The menu seems to be greatly reduced in terms of entrees. Also we were told the 10% discount from Walters Art Gallery membership was no longer honored for dinner. This is the second or third time they have not honored discounts they advertise so beware."

"Sacha's has a really cool vibe, excellent food & wine. Wish we lived closer so we could go more often. Our server was fun & so patient with one of our party who is a really picky eater."

"We've only been here once. The bison burger platter and the crab cake sandwich were good but they didn't particularly stand out. The casear salad was disappointing: the greens were limp and tasteless, and they did not seem dressed well. Given that this restaurant is fairly expensive and that the food quality was only average (imo), I can't say I would be inclined to return.
I will say, though: the server was very nice and sent our salad back without issue, and the decor was very nice."

"Overall experience was great. Service was good but not excellent. Food was five star. I had the bison brisket, which was incredible. Everyone in my party was happy with their food. One member of our party had a special request and the kitchen was very accommodating, allowing us to essentially create our own menu item. Cheese plate was generous and tasty, pumpkin ravioli was delicious, but a smidge cold (not sure if it was supposed to be served lukewarm?). The wine lost had an extensive number of wines by the glass for reasonable prices, and the red zin I had was delicious. We live in the neighborhood and had never been. So happy we tried it! Overall, excellent experience, from start to finish."

"I love love love Sascha's! So do my grown kids and grandkids. My late Ps would've loved it too. I wish it were open on Sundays, thoguh. OF course I don't want to to close Mondays like most restaurants. I don't want them to close ever."

"Hub and I went here for my birthday. our waitress was attentive but not overbearing. The food was great. I ordered the taco appetizer and the bison for an entree. I couldn't leave a bite on my plate. Hubby enjoyed his ordered as well. We chilled in the lounge area near the bar for a bit after dinner. It was a nice experience :)"

"We had a party of 4 and the atmosphere was colorful and energetic. The noise level was low enough for us to enjoy our own private conversation. Service was excellent we never had to look for our waiter he was very attentive and the food was tasty as well as it's presentation. It was our first time there but it will not be out last."

"I have to say, I was pleasantly surprised. I loved how quaint it was and the food was really good. I had the filet with the caesar salad and it was a very nice meal. Nice cocktails as well. Filet was tender and cooked as requested. My occasion was "date night" and the restaurant really was lovely and I would definitely go again. The only thing I wasnt a fan of was how close together the tables are - so a romantic ambiance that I was hoping for wasn't exactly there. So if you are looking for privacy or a "romantic table", you probably won't get it here I'm afraid. At the end however, it really was a nice experience and one that I would definitely love to have again for a "girls night out" or even another date night."

"We went for Valentine's dinner before an event at the Meyerhoff. The meal was good, little too pricey for the offerings. Crab soup had very little crab. Very small filet with no discernible lobster in the lobster beignet....tasty, but disappointing. Rockfish was cooked well, but over-breaded and somewhat bland. Expected a bit more!"

"Despite making plans relatively late for Valentine's Day (2 days notice), I was able to book a table for 2. Due to insane downtown Baltimore rush hour traffic, we were arriving late (more than 15 min late), but when we called to let the maitre d' know, he was graciously understanding and we still had a table ready. When we did arrive, the waiter admitted that things were busy and that he is normally in charge of the bar, but we just helping out with table service. If he hadn't told us, we'd have never known--the service was excellent, as was the food. All around a great experience, with a staff that seemed dedicated to quality service. Would certainly recommend for any "date night", not just Valentine's Day."

"The crab cake small plate and carrot cake were phenomenal. We also enjoyed the tacos, green salad and apple crisp. Only thing we would have changed was our seat. We were up against a wall, next to a bus boy station. We couldn’t really enjoy what was a really funky and fun looking place. Another couple came in after us and asked to sit somewhere else and they were accommodating- we just didn't think of it until we had already ordered our drinks. Our waitress was nice. The empty plates were removed quickly and water glasses were always full. Plus for me at least!"

"I just found Sascha's in the recent past and have been there three times. I am sure to return as I love the place. The shrimp and grits is awesome! Not to mention the Salmon! Service was great as well! Not one complaint on my end! Sascha will certainly be seeing more of me!"

"I loved the atmosphere. There is a beautiful chandelier and gorgeous art both on display and for sale. This place was truly lovely. As for the food, I consider myself a pretty harsh food critic. That said, I thought that the food was good, definitely above average, but not spectacular. With so many great places in Baltimore I'm not sure if I will be coming back, however I would not be opposed to returning upon the suggestion from someone else. While there I tried the scallops with soba appetizer. The steak and salmon entrees were both good and cooked perfectly, but the sauces were a bit lack luster. The onions were fabulous, though! For dessert the bread pudding was good but a little on the dry side. The complimentary pickles are AMAZING!"

"Dined for restaurant week. EXCELLENT menu choices. Tried the shrimp and grits for an appetizer. Nicely grilled shrimp, tons of flavor. Grits had a little spice but were creamy and cheesy, deliciousness. Lamb shank was hearty and the demi glace was outstanding. I was introduced to swiss chard and now its one of my favorite vegetables. I tried the squash cannelloni and I wish I ordered it. It was delicious as well. The carrot cake was ok. I like my cake moister and buttercream sweeter. Will definitely dine again."

"The beef short rib appetizer was delicious, but the filet entree was definitely sub-par for the price. Served at room temperature, tough cut of meat, pretty flavorless. It's something I would expect to get at a Chili's or IHOP. The carrot cake and apple crisp for desert were excellent (although I'm not sure if I've ever had bad carrot cake). Overall I was disappointed."

"Our waitress was terrific but the kitchen got backed up so our dinner took longer than it should have to arrive. This has never been an issue on our previous visits. The waitress apoligized and kept us up to date on the status of our meal. Fortunately, we were catching up with an old friend and were in no hurry and had no place else to go."

"I must say the evening started a little slowly. Our server welcomed us warmly, but after giving us our drinks we sat for 30-45 mins without any service. We noticed that people around us were munching on some long breadsticks. When our waiter came back to take our order we asked what everyone else had and he was shocked to find that we hadn't gotten any olives and breadsticks. He promptly brought them over. He also said that as an apology for the wait they wanted to offer us a free cocktail. The bartender personally came over to take our drinks...very nice of him. When I got my appetizer it was warm, not hot. They immediately fixed the problem. Overall the food was great and I appreciate that they resolved our issues."

"Three of us attended a restaurant week dinner. Everything we had was wonderful (and I tried all dishes). The wine pairings were great. I would only suggest to serve smaller portions of desert - it was too good to leave is unfinished but it was too much to have after such a superb dinner."
