B&G Oysters
B&G Oysters is a modern yet classic take on the oyster bar. Located in Boston's South End, B&G Oysters has a decidedly neighborhood feel, combining polished but friendly service with fantastically fresh seafood dishes and food-friendly wines. B&G Oysters has received many accolades over the years for its cuisine and wine program including "Best Seafood" in 2007 and 2008 by Boston Magazine.
This subterranean spot draws energy from its open kitchen which is surrounded by a white marble bar. In warmer weather, enjoy drinks and more on the stone patio; a favorite outdoor dining spot in the city. Please note that all reservations are for the interior of the restaurant. Our patio is available solely on a walk-in basis.

"We asked our server to suggest our appetizers and pair our wine. Wonderful! He then suggested our entrees and again paired the wine. Incredible! For dessest we again accepted his recommendation, and he paired the wine. Excellent! A fabulous date night in Boston for us. Thanks."

"Fabulously fresh, creative, well-prepared and presented dishes. Even the most simple dish, pan-seared hake, had a crispy, light brown crust, was moist, & perfectly cooked, accompanied by butternut squash balls and a fantastic creamy sauce reduction. And the oysters are luscious as well. Excellent service, good wine list, can't find any faults. This is one of the best, well worth the price."

"We had a late (3pm) lunch at B&G and were able to sit at the "bar" watching the kitchen. A great spot. We had an assortment of oysters that were excellent, the pea salad which was very unique and tasty, the fiddleheads were delicious and the lobster orchiette.
The lobster orchiette was outstanding. Wish there was a lot more of it (there were three of us sharing). Each bit was bursting with flavor. For dessert we had two things you must try: the chocolate mousse with toffee, salt and olive oil (obscenely good); and the lemon/coconut tart (super lemony).

"The seafood was fresh and well prepared, the salad was excellent, and ambiance was great -- busy, noisy crowd of people. Our servers were helpful and attentive but not overbearing. Not a place for a romantic dinner, but a nice way to show off an interesting part of Boston to out of town friends."

"First of all - this place is called B&G oysters - so try oysters!!! When we visited them they had 12 or 13 different types of oysters - they were very good!!! Very and very good!
We noticed that a lot of local people eat different seafood sandwiches - did not try as we were full with our choices but they did look very and very delicious.
They do not have a grilled lobster in their menu BUT they do have a fantastic pasta with lobster - my second stong reomendation after oysters!!! It is something great!!!"

"My wife and I have recently been trying restaurants in the South End and found B&G Oysters just walking by. It was too busy that night, so we made a reservation for a weekday night out. We choose to sit at the bar and had a great waitress! Watching all the food get prepared was great! We were happy with our Oysters, peapod salad (very unique) and fish. I would highly recommend this place and can't wait to go back for the lobster roll and fried clams...."

"We went on a Tuesday night and had a great time. The energy was fantastic. The setting is versatile with both inside counter and back patio seating options. The tilefish was perfectly cooked as were the brussel sprouts and mussels/fries. The ice cream sandwich for dessert was the perfect finale for the meal. I would recommend B&G to anyone with friends visiting town. B&G has become my favorite Boston seafood spot. The food trumps Island Creek and other notable seafood rivals and given the South End neighborhood, the setting is much much hipper."

"Hands down the best calamari I've ever eaten. Anywhere. That's all you need to know. But if you want to know more, very tasty and excellently cooked food, nice low key vibe, friendly wait staff who are enthusiastic about their product and not a huge wine list but everything on there goes very well with what they serve. As long as you can get the right wine, who cares how many others there are to chose from? Oh, also, one of the few places in Boston that I feel I can get really good seafood and the quality matches the price. Surprising for a town right on the water but there you go."

"We had a reservation for 2 for dinner and were seated at a large table with a family of four (with two very active young boys) next to us. So basically we were rubbing elbows with this family, and unfortunately I was being stared at and felt the table being bumped by the kids throughout our dinner. Ordered raw oysters and they were great. The clam fritters were rubbery and inedible so we sent them back, but it took forever to get our waiter's attention. Seemed like there were only 2 waitstaff on duty but the restaurant was full, and clearly this was not adequate coverage given the long wait for service. In any case, we were given a couple of fried oysters to make up for the fritters. Ipswich clams were great; lobster roll just ok."

"I've been coming to b&g for years, but hadn't been all winter and was excited to return. I must say, I was slightly disappointed. Our server, although very nice was a bit flighty. I think she was trying to cover too many tables and half of the bar as well. She forgot our sides and it was impossible to get her attention. As for the food, the oysters of course were amazing, as was the fluke crudo, very light and nice presentation. I had the special, which was skate with a polenta crust and porcini sauce. My mother had the swordfish. Both were good, but slightly under seasoned. I would have asked for salt, if I could have gotten our waitresses attention. The presentation was nice, but bare and could have used more mushrooms on the plate."

"B&G is a very small place. The food is quite good. Living up to its name, it had a good selection of oysters. It was full on a Sunday night. It had an an ambiance food an prices of a high priced restaurant while feeling a lot a clam shack. The animated conversation seemed a bit like a bar scene -- without actually being a bar scene. "We came for early dinner during rest. week. Our server gave us great wine to match our food choices. We took the pre fix dinner - all choices were great! While bringing us the first course - tartar fish, she realized it was a mistake but she offered to keep it for free and also gave us the salad we ordered originally. At the end the tartar fish was very delicate dish! The clam chowder soup was amazing. The scallops are to die for! Also notable was the chocolate mousse with the pinch of sea salt. We will come againe - it was a great place to eat before a play!"

"Love the oyster selection. They were shuck to perfection. I used to be a fan of Neptune Oyster but would now head only to B&G - almost partly due to the fact they do take reservations! Crudo was AMAZING. Fried oysters were good but I much prefer the raw version. The choc mousse was also terrific. It was hand whipped (you can tell) and had a lovely olive oil drizzler and cracked sea salt. I'm not a mousse person but this was divine."

"Enjoyed this marvelous boutique sized restaurant with my daughter and two adult granddaughters. Although we were doing the "Restaurant Week" menu one of us ordered from the regular menu and two of us tested the extensive oyster menu. The wine list by the glass allowed all of us to order by tastes. Great German and French wines. Service was knowledgeable and friendly"

"I'm a Mainer, so perhaps I'm a bit picky, but B&G didn't live up to its hype. The lobster roll lacked salt, the pound cake dessert was dry, and the bread was stale. When you pay $30 for a lobster roll, you expect some attention to detail.
If you can muster the drive, head north to Street & Company in Portland for some of the best fish + seafood dishes (and get the Sole Francaise)."

"We were extremely excited to try Barbara Lynch's B&G Oysters, but came away disappointed. The bread they offered at the beginning of the meal tasted stale and the 3-course Restaurant Week menu was weak and unbalanced. They offered no substanative alternatives for vegetarians - salads are unimaginative. The "blood orange lemon pound cake" was tough and not blood orange-y at all. They merely garnished with 3 small slices of blood orange. I expected much more from the meal and experience."

"I have been here before but I noticed a significant decline in quality and attention to detail. The food was decent although the menu for restaurant week was pretty stripped-down. We both had the cod in mushroom broth which smelled a little too fishy. What really went wrong was that they brought out stale bread - clearly yesterdays bread from the refrigerator - who does that? On top of that both of our silverware was crusted with old food. This was a disappointing night out to say the least. Even though we were there for restaurant week which is supposed to be a value, the bill was much higher than merited our dining experience."

"Great food in a vibrant place! We went on restaurant week and share everything, so we can grab a better idea of this place. Everything was delicious, the only downside was desserts..... "Perhaps the kitchen was a little off today. The main course with 2 nicely prepared scallops on a generous pool of something complementary, was the best part of the lunch. The clam chowder was very tasty but the clams were very rubbery and could not be masticsted. The fennell salad lost its shine because of an unbalanced dressing. My queston is this: Is it now popular to serve dry poundcake, or am i not with the latest trend? The server was sweet and did do her best although she had to serve a large area. Folks seemed to have a good time and the place was packed. Perhaps they have to compromise on the Restaurant Week menu."

"Such a great restaurant. Really fresh seafood and fish, with a nice modern twist.
However, we were somewhat disappointed with the service; we booked a table at 7:45 PM and arrived just before 8 PM (impossible to find a place to park) and they had already given our table for someone else, without calling us. They were just trying to call us when we entered the restaurant, but clearly they had already given our table for someone else before trying to reach us. We were celebrating a birthday so it was quite a disappointment. This hasn't ever happened to us in any other restaurant. We ended up eating in the bar which was OK but not what we had expected. So come early, or call the restaurant if you're a little late..."

"If you visit b&g make sure you try their lobster bisque it's absolutely delicious without being overly heavy! The restaurant is small, it's a little pricey but everything is fresh and delicious! You can see the chefs cooking right at the bar which is ideal so you know everything is cooked to order pretty much which is essential for a seafood restaurant! Great wine selection even by the glass! Staff is attentive and I love that they all work together as a team so your beverage never goes empty and your food arrives in a timely manner and to perfection!! My boyfriend had the crab club which was amazing French fries are divine there! He has the lobster club last time which was equally amazing and they don't scrimp on the meat or sandwiches!"
