Ad Hoc
Thomas Keller’s ad hoc, which literally means "for this purpose," was originally intended to be a temporary restaurant, open during the development of a very different concept. But, due to its loyal following, it was decided that it must be a permanent fixture in Yountville. ad hoc serves a prix fixe, 4-course chalkboard menu, changing daily. Food is served family style and reminiscent of the comfort food with which Chef Keller grew up.

"We made reservations in advance and despite the menu changing everyday we planned to eat there on the Mondays (every other week) when it was fried chicken night. As you would imagine from a place of this magnitude the food was unbelievably good. There is nothing wrong with this place. The only hang-up for some might be that tables are very close together so tables for two are about 2 feet apart from each other. For us it was fantastic because we're outgoing and talked to the couple next to us, shared stories, and were even sharing a bottle of wine by the end of the meal. Definitely a must visit place."

"I think it is pretentious to charge over $50.00 per person for a meal that you have no choice in what is served. It was presented beautifully by a knowledgeable waiter who was helpful in selecting wine, but the meal, lamb shanks, was rather ordinary."

"My daughter graduated from college and requested Ad Hoc. It was beyond perfection. Our waiter made the evening because of his great humor and all the staffs devotion to detail. It's pricey but definitely worth it for special occasions!"

"This was our first visit to Ad Hoc. We made the reservation well ahead of our trip to the Napa Valley and really lucked out in that the house specialty fried chicken was served on the particular Monday that we were in town! "I was very excited that I could make a reservation at Ad Hoc, but the experience was a bit disappointing.
I just read a review about the dry lamb shank here, so probably the night I was dining in was one of those 'down' days in Ad Hoc. However, a great restaurant shouldn't have up and down... but has to be consistent with the food and service.

"I'll admit, at first I was a little disappointed when I read the menu for the day we would be having dinner at Ad Hoc, even though I had heard how great it is! I am from the south and fried chicken is practically a staple. Anyway, I didn't want to put a downer on our experience, so I talked it up to my friends and kept an upbeat attitutude. Since I had been there before, I knew that everything would be great, I had no doubt, I was just thinking about fried chicken being so ordinary. However, I was pleasantly surprised with the entire meal, including the chicken! It was amazing. My friends and family thoroughly enjoyed the entire experience! Thanks Ad Hoc for delivering once again!"

"We arrived in wine country after an evening flight into Oakland and were able to get the last reservation on a Monday night-9:30. This was our third time eating at Ad Hoc. It was very busy and although we arrived on time we had to wait 20 minutes to be seated. It would have been nice to have been offered something while we waited (we had traveled from the Central Time Zone), but once we were seated we had a great meal. Fried chicken was the main course. We did appreciate that even though we were the last diners seated for the evening we never felt rushed. We chose to go with Ad Hoc's wine pairings with the meal and felt that their choices were excellent, complementing the food very well."

"I had heard nothing but positive things about Ad Hoc. We are locals so a last minute reservation was easy. The seating arrangement is not condusive to a nice dinner date. Tables are too close together and the noise level is excessive. Our server basically ignored us. We literally had to chase her down and call for her anytime we needed something and she never checked back with us. The main course, lamb shank, was overcooked and had zero flavor. The Merlot had so much sediment it was undrinkable. I asked for a new glass. The server removed it but brought the same glass back to me, pretending to change it. This is an expensive place to dine and with less than favorable service and food quality, we will not be repeat customers."

"Just got back from a great trip in Napa (6/5 - 6/6 2013). Stayed in Yountville - perfect place to stay if you are eating in town -- the best places to eat in the valley are here. Ad Hoc was good but I wish I would have gone for lunch and had the fried chicken or been there on Monday night when that is what is being served. Family style with a set menu. We did the wine pairing - DONT DO THAT. For the $42 a person it cost us - I would have rather chosen my own bottle or two and not had to wait on the next round (I'm the fast drinker in the group). The food was great, service a little slow and impersonal. After eating at Buchon the night before I was disappointed that I had not chosen to eat at Bottega instead."

"I have heard acquaintances rave about Ad Hoc, so I was psyched to try it with my foodie parents. Our expectations were high, but the meal disappointed all around. The room was too loud even after we asked them to turn down the music - perhaps because the tables are so close.
The entree (short ribs) were cooked perfectly, but the meat was so fatty that I could hardly eat it. The accompanying vegetables were yummy but too few. The grilled peaches with the cheese course were terrific but we each only got two peach slices - hardly enough to savour the flavors. Dessert (pb& j cookies), was an attempt to be cute that failed in execution."

"We've been to the restaurant a number if times and have always enjoyed it. Tonight was a real disappointment. The salad and side veggies were great. Short ribs had a bland barbecue sauce, swordfish for an extra $16 was tasteless and the dessert , a peanut butter ice cream cookie was the most disappointing. At this time of the year I would have expected something with seasonal fruit. At $52 per person this meal should have shined!"

"We had the salad, black cod, lasagna and pork, the cheese course and a sweet dessert pot de creme. I have to say, the lasagna, cheese and desserts were the highlights. The lasagna sauce was sweet and savory, the cheese was the perfect pairing after a hearty main course, and the dessert, while surprisingly sweet was still SO tasty.

"It is extremely loud, to the point the person sitting across from you cannot hear you. The food that was put together by someone who doesn't understand flavors or food. If you are a foodie please miss this one. On the menu the night we went was strip steak. It was chewy and full of fat with uninventive flavors. Then came honey, cheese and salted peanuts. This could be lovely if done right, but it wasn't done right and none of the flavors went well together. Its as if the chef knows that honey and cheese can go well together but doesn't understand what type of honey to pair with what type of cheese."

"ostentacious and very over-priced. Prix-fix menu with only one main course offering, so you're stuck with what ownership decides is to be served. Be warned though, that you can decline the offering and make a request for an alternative (salmon instead of quail the night we were there), but only if you are savvy enough to know (waiter will not offer it to you). Waiter was haughty and flippant. Would not recommend to anyone."

"As usual, Ad-Hoc does not disappoint. This was our first time for brunch and we enjoyed it (especially the salad).

"All the food was great. You should note that each night has a set menu, so not good for picky eaters. They did accommodate a vegetarian in our party with no problem. The dessert was an ice cream sundae, which was a little disappointing. We would have preferred a more unique option."

"With all of the recent press Ad Hoc has received it should come as no surprise that it is a highly sought out meal -- whatever the night, whatever the menu. We were lucky enough to land there on one of the 'Fried Chicken Mondays,' and there was no denying it was everything that was raved about and more. The lovely casual, laid back ambiance was a perfect fit for Napa's rolling hills: very welcoming and enticing. After a short wait (definitely make a reservation), we were seated and greeted by one of the nicest servers ever!! This truly set the stage for what was about to follow -- the most memorable dining experience bar none! The entire meal was amazing, and we couldn't have been happier with our decision. No doubt you will be, too!"

"This was my second trip to Ad Hoc. My first trip was excellent - fantastic service, wonderful food. This second trip was good, but perhaps less enjoyable. The menu deviated from what, at least I view, the style of the restaurant being - more of a Spanish influence than elevated American food. Maybe this is my misconception, and it is inherently the danger of a restaurant with a different menu every day; nonetheless, it is very disappointing to see the menu for the days leading up to and following your trip and see things that look delicious and along the lines of what you expect, while the day of your reservation is not in the same vein. Our server was also a bit sarcastic and not particularly pleasant."

"We absolutely loved Ad Hoc for Brunch! Now, I must say, I've never spent that much on Brunch before but for a one time splurge it was worth it! I think it was around $36. a person for a preset menu. Our preset included a gorgeous salad, then fried chicken and waffles (sounds weird but delic! )and a wonderful sorbet desert. Bloody Marys were good too! Atomosphere is lively so be ready for upbeat music ! We would definitely go back and highly recommend Brunch which I think they only do on Sundays. Make a reservation it was quite packed even at 10 am!"

"The food may not be as pretty as the French Laundry, but it also is about 1/5 the price, yet the quality is still excellent. We went on a Monday night and had their famous Fried Chicken. It was served family style and was enough for dinner and two subsequent picnic lunches. We also opted for the meatballs which were the best I'd ever had. The salad and sides were also incredible as was the decadent dessert! I liked most of the pairings that night, with the exception of the Schramsberg sparkling wine with the ceasar salad. (That didn't work for me).
A fantastic and affordable dinner in Napa!"

"Hi, It was odd to go to brunch and not really be able to choose what to eat, but it was all incredible, dieters beware, you can't resist every morsel, even when you're FULL! And it's multi course! I'm not sure I'd like to be that restricted for dinner, same format, but brunch outside during our visit from cold N.E couldn't be beat.
