The signature dish at Legal Sea Foods – really fresh fish.
One of our first restaurants and still a popular lure, we are located on Route 9 in the Chestnut Hill Shopping Center. We are still keeping things fresh at our bar, our open dining room and in our take-out counter and Fish Market.
Legal Sea Foods has long proven that a consistent, high quality dining experience never goes out of style. With over 40 varieties of fresh fish and shellfish available throughout the year as well as an award-winning wine list, there’s no doubt why legions of fans have fallen hook, line and sinker.
We’ve received a boatload of accolades including “Most Popular Boston Restaurant” (Zagat, 2011/2012), “Best Seafood Restaurant” (Improper Bostonian, 2010), “Best Chowder” (Boston Magazine, 2010), “Best Seafood Restaurant” (Boston Phoenix, 2009) and the honor of serving our legendary New England Clam Chowder at every presidential inauguration since 1981.

"Food was as usually great; however, service was close to disturbing.
Our waiter was ignorant and made us feel like we must eat fast and leave.
I asked for the supervisor/manager, but it was actually ignored as well.
Very unusual negative experience in this area, if not the only one.
It was my wife’s birthday and we invited our kids and grandchildren. Even though the food was great as usually, I can’t say that we enjoyed this evening."

"Went as part of a group of 7 friends. The waiter was excellent: friendly, helpful, and available when we needed him. I had the seasonal fried soft shell crab. It was just okay. They were having a special on some Chilean wines. We tried both a bottle of the pinot and the malbec. The pinot was not like any pinot I've ever tasted: no one liked it. The malbec was better -- my guess is it was about a $10-12 bottle retail, so not a fine wine, but drinkable."

"The food here is great - especially the grilled shrimp or fish. The reservation desk seemed overwhelmed. Our reservations were for 7:45. We arrived on time and were told "Give us a few minutes to clear a table." We sat right in front of the desk with our pager. When it hadn't gone off after 25 minutes, we inquired politely only to be told that they had crossed off the reservation because they had written down the wrong pager number and had been paging that incorrect number, which, of course did not produce a response. No one thought to call our name? No apology and we were seated for at least 20 minutes before the very nice but very busy waiter brought us even a roll. An apology from a manager would have been a nice touch."

"Have been to Legal Seafood a number of times (numerous locations) and the food has always been great. We were disappointed in the service and all other aspects of the experience this time, however. Starting with poor signage as to the location of the entrance to the restaurant (manager said that recent construction of the shopping center has created the chaos), to having to wait at the hostess station for 3 minutes while the two hostesses were arguing about how to enter a reservation for another party that was for a different night a week later. And finally, being taken to our table only to be told that the table wasn't actually available and waiting in the middle of the restaurant."

"I guess since it was the holiday, the kitchen was rushed. My stuffed shrimps looked like they threw shrimps on top of the stuffing. The shrimps were dry. It almost looked like they just put new shrimp on old stuffing. They just threw 1 tablespoon of rice on the plate. Too much money for the portions they gave. I generally like the restaurant and the food is good, but I guess not for a special occasion where they were swamped. They couldn't handle it."

"We have been Legals customers for decades and, sadly, that dedication is coming to an end. On Mother's Day, like many holidays, we reserved a table @ 7:15 pm for 11 people. Although we asked the manager to a great server because we wanted to have a speedy meal on a school night, our meal was a disaster. Appetizers came an hour after ordering and they forgot half of them. Servers didn't know where they belonged, requests were not noted and several items were incorrect. The meal arrived another 45 minutes later after assurances that it would 'be right out'!!!. Food was fair and lukewarm. We left the restaurant at 9:45 with exhausted kids. Happy Mother's Day!"

"Over all my experience here was good. It was difficult to figure out how to tell them we had reservations - we waited in the only obvious line for 5-10 mins only to discover that we needed to go further inside for reservations. Then, it was hard to physically get there because they were allowing a large party to wait in the walk way. Once we were seated, the waitress took her time to make her way over to us. The waitress seemed a little distracted all evening - she had other tables, but it took her 15 minutes to take our drink order, 20 mins to bring us water (which we had to request, which is unusual to me), The food came quickly and was very good. It was a Saturday night, so I can't really complain too much. Would go back."

"The bartenders at the bar were great and drinks were very good. Loved my seafood and asparagus. I did not like my salad. The salad ingredients were not on the menu so I asked the waiter what they were. He didn't know and seemed hesitant to find out so I didn't push it. I wish I had asked him to find out because I do not like cranberries at all and there were a lot in the salad. It was very crowded, but we got a nice little booth that suited us."

"Our table for 8 was ready when we arrived and we were seated immediately even though only 2 of our party had arrived. Our waitress was Amy and she was efficient, professional and extremely friendly. the food was delicious and quick and she offered to take a group picture of our gang. had a wonderful time!"

"This is a frequent spot for us. It is always good. ?the staff is great. They are friendly, knowledgable, and gracious. The fish is always the freshest, and they are great with special requests.
We are worried there won't be enough parking when all the surrounding construction finishes and the movie theater opens."

"It was Easter Sunday our reservation was 2:15 and we were seated at 2:45 or so.....not too bad.... salmon was undercooked and sent back and clearly was put in a microwave....the lemon sole was very good...baked cod was good ...swordfish good....salads arrived before 4 out of 5 cocktails....the steamers were succulent....had to ask for the last drink. Waiter was very helpful and over worked"

"Poor, poor, poor service. We felt like he was there just for the tip until near the end, then I'd guess he realized he may not get one so thus stepped up his game. Because we had to get moving the executive chef made it happen. The 2-stars is for all other and our wait person averaged. He'd have gotten a 1 others a 4. The food was GREAT!"

"My husband and I went here to take advantage of the Restaurant Week specials. We discovered that the value of the "specials" depended very much on what was ordered. My shrimp wontons and crabcake combo with boston creme pie for dessert were all delicious and an excellent Restaurant Week deal. My husband had a cup of clam chowder, the wood grilled assortment, and cheesecake. His fish was mediocre and the clam chowder, while very good, is an inexpensive appetizer. So while we generally find the food here to be fresh and tasty, how much the Restaurant Week menu is worth depends."

"Although the seafood was good, the portions were small and the side salads were both small and soggy. The clam chowder & mashed potatoes were very good but the rice pilaf tasted like "boxed rice" and the desserts were clearly frozen/pre-made. Given the expensive menu, I would expect better quality."
