Designed to complement the legendary Redwood Room, Velvet Room is a unique venue for corporate meetings and select nightlife events, while offering breakfast and dinner daily. To support our vision of using high quality ingredients to drive the preparation and flavors of the menus at Clift, Executive Chef Thomas Weibull has partnered with local farmers and growers to produce seasonal menu items for Velvet Room that are locally grown in a sustainable and organic manner. The elegant and dramatic room, complemented by lush velvet curtains, mahogany and leather banquettes and hand blown Murano glass lamps hosts an eclectic roster of events created by Morgans Hotel Group’s dynamic nightlife and entertainment team.
"We chose this restaurant because it was said to be quiet and because it is close to the Curran Theater. Also it is in the right price range for a place where we needed to hurry through dinner to make it to the theater on time. We were not disappointed on any of the above. However the food and atmosphere did not seem as, well, "classy" as befits a downtown San Francisco location. We'd probably go back for the quiet and convenience attributes but not for the food."

"We chose this restaurant for my birthday dinner because we stayed overnight at the Clift Hotel. We had 2 starters, chickory salad & bay scallops. Both excellent. For entrees my husband had steak and I had Haddock with chick peas in a tasty sauce. My fish was just a tad dry (overcooked), but delicious. Portions were moderate to large -- perfect for us. Our waiter, Nicholas, was THE BEST! He was also my waiter in the morning for breakfast. So professional and knowledgeable. We were surprised that on a Saturday night there were only four tables occupied in the restaurant at 8 p.m. Why? When it was Asia de Cuba it was hard to get a reservation on the weekend. Interesting how restaurant trends change."

"We went here on a Gilt City deal. Preset 3 course meal and wine for 2 at a very reasonable price. Food was ok but not amazing, wine was pretty awful but I suppose we got what we paid for on the coupon deal. Overall I found the Velvet Room too dark and the decor completely uninspiring. Service staff was friendly and attentive, but then again we were one of only 4 tables seated at 7pm on a Sat eve. The Redwood Room bar one room over was full...they may want to consider how to parlay more of that cocktail crowd over for dinner - and spice up their dishes (e.g, their truffle risotto didn't have a discernible speck of truffle flavor in it)."

"Beautiful room right next to the Redwood Room. Salad starter was vinegary and needed pepper but was the only miss. Soup the other starter was perfect. Main courses - the petit poulet was absolutely perfect and had a good amount of meat. Wine is expensive but the selection is very good. Service on the whole was good but not as polished as Campton Place. Nice place if you in the city and want a vibrant atmosphere - only go on Friday or Saturday otherwise it is empty. Then have a drink in the Redwood Room and party!"

"setting was nice, but background music too loud. Service was very slow even though the restaurant was empty. Blamed kitchen being backed up because serving other venues. Although we allowed almost 2 hours before our show to dine, we almost missed the show as we weren't served our entrees until 10 minutes before we needed to leave. The fish was overcooked and the order was wrong, so there was nothing we could do. Wine was good. Heard they were closing early for a private event - never told us before."

"We used a Gilty City voucher and it was a set 3 course meal. Selections were disappointing (I thought they were different when I bought the voucher). Only had two, one was veggie and other was chicken. No one was really there but service / attention was kind of slow at the end and since we had a play to get to, got a little frustrating when trying to get the check. Won't be going back to eat there any time soon."

"Excellent food and service. Selected A.C.T. theater option for prix fixe menu, which was excellent value and close to various theaters. Room is a bit dark. Probably better suited to middle age crowd & older rather than twenty-somethings."
