farmerbrown is about supporting local and African-American farmers, using organic, biodynamic, and/or sustainably raised foods, and beverages whenever possible. Our focus is Southern food, a gift that is often mis-represented. We love our food and want you to love it, too. Chef-owner Jay Foster (formerly of Emmy's Spaghetti Shack and BlueJay Cafe) is the creative force behind farmerbrown's unique take on soul food. Partner, Deanna Sison, a former cooking show producer, completes the team, bringing with her years of experience in the hospitality industry and a passion for food. Our philosophy revolves around providing the freshest possible organic ingredients for their wholesome southern American classics, presented lovingly to their local communities.This marriage of farm fresh southern cuisine with local Bay Area ingredients in a down home soulful atmosphere gives farmerbrown its unique vibe. "Food took.a while to come out. We were there at 5:30 pm when the restaurant pretty much.opened. The portions are quite large. The angel cornbreads was cute. The porkchop was a bit dry, not much flavor but could taste the smokiness. Fried chicken wad quite moist . Wait staff very nice. Very helpful in giving her opinion of the plates to choose from"

"It's been a few years since we went to Farmer Brown's, mainly because the vegetarian options consisted of mixing together a few side dishes and appetizers. We always loved it, but as the vegetarian in the relationship, I got bored.
A recent trip to New Orleans inspired us to go back again. And this food is better than anything we had there...because it's local and organic. Definitely soul is included at Farmer Brown's.
I had the vegetarian pot pie with the most delicious crust on top and bottom! He had the catfish and he said it was incredible. We brought out cheesecake and pecan pie home for later, and those were also fabulous!
We'll be back as soon as we can!"

"Food was fair; the jambalaya was a bit greasy, the seafood gumbo was pretty decent. Definitely not outstanding. The service was also fair, our waitress had a bit of an attitude. We'll find another option when in this neighborhood again. SF has so many good restaurants that I won't go back."

"Once seated we enjoyed our meal, but beware, they will not seat you until all of your group is there, so, if you're planning to go to a show at the Orpheum or Golden Gate after the meal, be sure everyone in your group is on time!"

"We'll never go back there again. When they first opened, they had good food and decent service. Now, food is mediocre and the service is HORRIBLE. RUDE, LATE...
We ended up being there for 2 1/2 hours. WOW. I can't believe it took almost 30 minutes to get someone to take our order. Everyone we spoke with pretty much didn't want to deal with us because we weren't in their section. It took almost an HOUR for our food to come out. When we finished eating, it only took 5 minutes for the check to come out though. Not surprised."

"Gritty neighborhood (walked through a gaggle of noisy vagrants a block away) but perhaps that's par for the SF course. Food was served quickly, was hot, tasty and plentiful, and the cocktails were an interesting spin on classics. Service was on par with the other SF restos we've tried. If you're downtown and need a fix of comfort food (ribs, fried chicken, mac'n'cheese) this is a good choice!"

"Food was good and because it was buffet style there was no need to wait on a server. This was a good thing. He did arrive after we had begun eating and took drink orders. The drinks arrived while we were eating desert. Poor service, but he did keep smiling! I don't plan on going back because of the pan-handlers and smell outside. Even the smiling waiter can't change my mind."

"My family and I are on a quest to find the best chicken and waffles in the Bay Area. That being said we ordered the chicken and waffles. There was no option to choose what part of the chicken you would like to order. Most places will give you the choice to pay a little extra for a breast, here everyone seemed to get thighs. The chicken was moist but had no flavor. The waffles had absolutely no taste. We were so disappointed and left hungry. Although our waiter was really friendly it took forever to get water and to take our order even though it wasn't crowded.. They also don't have children's menu. We won't be going back."

"We recently went back to Farmer Brown after having not been for a year or more. Each of us ordered the ribs special, which looked great when the plates arrived. The ribs, while large, had little meat and what was there was tough and stringy. And the ribs were coated with a rub so spicy my companion couldn't even eat most of his, and left my mouth on fire. And I love spicy food! But this was ridiculous. The meal was largely inedible. We were cool about it and the server was gracious. He acknowledged somewhere on the menu or in his presentation of the special, the heat should have been mentioned. Not that it would have made the stringy meat anymore satisfying. Sadly disappointed Farmer Brown."

"What struck me first was..... something was missing. So.. the website says that the place is focused on locally sourced foods and in particular those of African American farmers.. so.. why was I.. a customer.. the only African American in the place for a good 3 hours? Hmmm... not sure that matters.. just food for thought.
My Chicken and Waffles were bland... waffles seemed to be from a mix.. nothign special.. and the chicken lacked any distinctive flavor. My friend had the grits/crawfish/shrimp .. and it was delish."

"While the fried chicken was outstanding, it would have been nice to get at least 3 pieces of chicken for the high price charged ($18.95)! C'mon, chicken is one of the least expensive protein items one can purchase!! A drumstick and half a breast does not a $18.95 meal make!! The beef ribs were just so-so; not worth the "special price" of $20.95. While there were 4 huge ribs, there wasn't enough meat on all of them together to make much of a meal. Must say, though, the mac and cheese was great! Also, our server was really very attentive and cordial."

"My husband and I dined at Farmer Brown based on friends reviews. The ambiance is funky, earthy, cool, and ecletic; as is the personable, friendly staff. My husband ordered the jambalaya with a side of biscuits with strawberry butter. The jambalaya had great flavor and not too "tomatoey." The portion should have been larger considering the price point. The biscuits were absolutely divine. I ordered the catfish which was cooked to perfection. The sweet potatoes were undercooked with an "herby" unappealing taste I cannot name. The green beans were bland and the mac n cheese and was in more of a bland bechamel sauce than yummy melted cheese."

"This place was great! Good service and a small but tasty menu. Ribs are a must as well as fried chicken. It is a good place for a causal dinner with friends. Downside, the music is terrible top 40's. For BBQ, I would have expected a something a little more in line with the food type and the area leaves much to be desired. Drive, instead of taking public transportation, unless you are in a group. I would not suggest a trip alone."

"The hostess was especially professional and thoughtful. I was dining with a co-worker at a two top. My jacket and purse were placed to my right on the bench, as no one was sitting beside me. Another party was shortly seated after us, the hostess offered a chair upon which I could place my items. She was so very proactive in preventing an unpleasant situation.

"I expected more given all the hype, but the food is good. Chicken is OK. My thought is since there is little southern around the area, this ends up setting the standard which doesn't necessarily mean it is that great. However, every time I have gone the service is excellent. That I appreciate and it does stand out. Cocktails are ridiculously strong but good. You might be flammable after a few."

"Was quite disappointed on this last visit to Farmer Brown's. I have gone to this restaurant in the past and the food has definitely changed for the worse. The portions were cut, whereas the prices have remained the same. Also the quality and taste has gone down as well. Based on this experience I would not recommend this restaurant."

"If you're into rich southern soul food, you will love this place! The biscuits, the mac and cheese, the pork chops and of course, the fried chicken are the big highlights on their menu, as is their pecan pie and cheesecake deserts. The ambience is dark, dimly lit and has a New Orleans vibe to it. The staff are on top of their game and very good at what they do. Decent wine selection, good cocktail menu and overall a good price for items on the menu.
I tend to not be able to stomach food that is overly rich so went home feeling stuffed and a bit queasy BUT that is not a reflection on Farmer Brown in anyway...its just a reflection on my inability to digest rich food! :)
But I am glad I checked them out."

"Second visit to Farmer Brown's. Tuesday night featuring a $16 Chicken and Waffle special. The Fried Chicken was cooked to perfection. Two pieces of chicken on the plate, one breast and one wing. Crispy chicken had that perfect combination of outside crispiness and inside juicy tenderness. The waffles were also cooked perfectly. Golden on the outside and soft and airy on the inside. Smothered the waffles in syrup and enjoyed that perfect combination of salty and sweet. I didn't think it would taste much better than your standard chicken and waffle house, but boy FB's do this dish right. I cleaned my entire plate and washed it down with a signature Mason Jar Cocktail."

"Farmer brown was excellent! The food was delicious and the service was outstanding. I highly recommend the southern fried chicken (hot, juicy and freshly prepared). The roasted yams were perfection and the sweet tea will make a southerner proud. But don't leave without desert. You won't have room to eat it there, but the red velvet cake was perfect later. My only regret was that I had my first meal there on my last night in town. Next visit to San Francisco farmer brown will be my first stop!"

"We've had brunch at Farmer Brown's a number of times. There are a few items you can order al la carte, but the buffet is great. Chicken & waffles, grits, salad, biscuits & gravy, and more. The coffee is great and their unique cocktails change with the seasons. It is also the perfect location for brunch before the St. Patricks day parade as it is just a few steps from the parade route."

"The best Jambalaya I have had in at least 10 years - really, the roux is well loved and pretty spectacular. Fantastic bar menu that pairs well with the food. Come hungry, because you will want to finish every bite of your dish. The food was excellent, service is normally better, but we had an especially slow server the night we went. The food is enough to keep bringing me back though."

"Very crowded and loud. I can forgive those two but the brunch buffet was very unorganized, you have to wait forever for then to refill the buffet, VERY VERY tiny space, the buffet table was very tight and the seating as well, you basically feel like you're in the same group as the surrounding tables because your table is only 5inches away. The chicken is the only good part."
