Located in the former Lowenstein Theatre Complex, adjacent to the Tattered Cover Book Store, the restaurant features a long elegant bar, a slim modern dining room flooded by natural light and a comfortable atmosphere for the Congress Park neighborhood. As an American bar and grill, Encore's menu is seasoned with homegrown traditions and culinary twists by executive Chef Paul C. Reilly. The menu features flat breads pizzas, such as prosciutto paired with fig jam and arugula pizza, appetizers, such as the roasted artichoke with truffle butter and herb aioli, and signature main courses, such as Moroccan style beef short ribs. Steve Whited, co-owner, opened the Black Pearl restaurant in Denver's South Pearl Neighborhood in 2005. Whited then partnered with Chef Reilly in 2007 to bring creative takes on American fare to the Colfax Avenue corridor.

"My book club typically plans one brunch outing per year. This year we elected to eat at Encore since we usually hold our monthly meetings at the Colfax Tattered Cover bookstore.

I have eaten at Encore at least 3-4 times before. I have to say that it holds a special place in my heart because several former high school students I know currently work there. They are part of the service/bus staff and it makes my day when I see them.

One of the things I love about Encore is that the menu does have something for every palate. When I arrived on Sunday, I wasn't very hungry but left very satisfied. Several of the folks dining with me came in ravenous and their dining needs were met as well. The food is always well-prepared and delicious"

"The food was wonderful--nothing more to say about that. The service was fair--but our waiter kept on forgetting to give us the basics (silverware, water ...). We had to ask twice for two glasses of wine that finally came with the main course. The main drawback is the noise level. We went on a Friday night, during Denver Restaurant Week, so, of course, the place was packed. We could not hear each other (a table of 4) and when we walked out our voices were strained because we had yelled so much to try to talked to each other."

"The low rating for the food is just my fault. I didn't like the sauce on the Encore Burger. The waiter was very nice and apologized and even offered to get me something else. So it was really just my uneducated palate. Everything was great, and my friend had a bite of my burger and loved it."

"Horrible! Almost as a taunt to the decent food served during 2010 Restaurant Week the inebriated loud bar patrons blocking the aisle from the entrance to the dining area, the constant yelling of the folks at the bar, the bare low ceilings and walls resulting in the diners shouting over the ambient noise, and the sound system which seemed to be cranked up each time the racket increased - all this really destroyed any enjoyment of the good food. It is obvious that the Encore kitchen should be moved to a more appropriate location, or the bar area closed off completely and the hard surfaces of the dining area treated with sound absorbent materials. After two visits with the same experience Encore is now a "nevermore" restaurant for me. Pity."

"Food here is reliably good, but rarely great. We're not big eaters, so the portions are appropriate to our tastes. That said, prices are not exorbitant, but not inexpensive either. I would rate that "value" as average. Encore always has very good service. Polite, professional and cheerful staff are the rule. Beware: the dining room is deafeningly loud. I don't what it is about this space in particular that makes it so, but, boy, it's loud. Of course, that makes the ambiance very lively; it's always like a big party."

"Really wanted to like this place but was very let down. Their wine list was unimpressive at best. The hostess was rude, barely acknowledged when we arrived and said nothing when we left. Our waitress, Chris, was so rude to us I felt guilty for even leaving her a tip. The food was alright, realy the only redeeming factor.

If you eat her and the red head hostess is working and/or Chris is your waitress...run for your lives!"

"Well for the price I expected more food and it was not much it was pretty but not feeling and worth the money. "I came to Encore for 5280 week with a group of five. I ordered the scallops, which were amazing! My friend, however, ordered the steak at medium, and it was very rare. It was still good, but very undercooked. The rest of the food was delicious!
The service, on the other hand, was fair. Our server was friendly, but we ordered an appetizer off the regular menu, and he forgot to put it in. We politely reminded him, and he brought it out after our entrees. He apologized, but we were still charged. When it came time to pay, the server put all of the tax on one person's card, which was significantly more than the rest of the bills.
Overall, a pretty good experience!"

"I've eaten here several times and really like the food. Moreover I like that they emphasize the use of locally produced food. I’ve had everything from lamb to chicken salad here and everything just pops with flavor and small, well chosen surprises. It’s clear a lot of thought goes into everything on your plate. "This was my 3rd trip to Encore, and my 2nd disappointment. On my first trip, I had a burger which was wonderful. On my 2nd 2 trips, however, the food was disappointing. When I went for brunch (2nd trip) 5 of the 6 of us in our party were not happy with our food. (The one person who was happy with his ordered the burger!) Last night I went and had the 5280 menu. My dining companion couldn't even finish her entree it was so bad, and although she should have sent it back, she didn't. The bus person took her uneaten plate without inquiring if there was anything wrong. Tacky. But our drinks were good. Fine place if you want burgers and booze."

"Our food was great and the ambiance was nice. Our service was very poor at best. From the rude bartender to the extremely slow wait staff this was the only thing that was bad but it probably is the most important part of dining out. We had two separate servers and they were both really slow."

"Excited to check this place out, my anticipation soon lead to dismay. Entering the restaurant reminded me of a cheap diner, instead of an upscale restaurant one might expect based on the menu prices. I thought I'd order a drink while waiting for dinner, but was refused by the waiter who claimed my ID appeared to be "tampered" with. They offered me a ginger beer instead - slightly insulting. For an appetizer, my girlfriend and I split the $9 Pear Waldorf salad, which looked and tasted like coleslaw with sliced apples laid on top. I went for the $22 steak special, which had zero flavor except for the burnt taste from the charred outside. The braised beef short ribs (about 50% fat) weren't much better. An overall very disappointing experience."

"This second visit to Encore confirmed our first impression: good food & good service, but it's a little noisy. The pork porterhouse is magnificent: the wood-fired grilling gives it a smoky edge, topped with red onion confit and pear. The Morrocan-spiced short ribs were succulent and amazingly were not at all fatty. The cous cous was tad bland, but a nice counterpoint to the wonderful spices of the short ribs. And the bittersweet chocolate souffle was the perfect balance of light yet dense chocolate. One souffle is perfect for two."

"We decided to try Encore for lunch and made a reservation for 11:30. We arrived a few minutes early and were bruskly told to come back in about 15 minutes as they were cleaning up from a private party. We were seated immediately when we returned. The service was excellent once we were seated. The food was quite good. We started with the jalapeno poppers and I think they were the best we have had - red jalapenos, oozing melted cheese all wrapped in bacon and served with raspberry jam. I had the mediterranean platter - it was a nice assortment of usual bites. Husband had burger which was quite nice but the fries with the sauce were the standout - chinese hot mustard cut with mayo/sour cream (my guess) but really nice pairing."

"The food was delicious. Our group of 4 ordered a variety of items with no complaints on the taste. However, the couscous in Moroccan Ribs was cold; the entire dish should have been warmer. The mussels were not hot enough either. Service was slow. We sat for 30 minutes with our menus closed, waiting to order. Bread plates were on the table, perhaps for decor; no bread was served. Worst was the noise. We all felt that we had been shouting to each other to have a conversation the entire time we were there - very stressful!! We will not be back."

"Encore has kept it's basic menu so that you can always find a favorite that you enjoy eating again. Friday night they had trout, which was fresh and delicious, a rarity on Denver menus. Plus, the unusual vanilla and nutty cauliflower made for the perfect side dish. All in all, we enjoyed this dinner. The lowered ceiling in the room makes it very noisy, but the aromas from the wood fired grill make the environment so nice that I am willing to forget the high noise level for the sake of a wonderful dinner. We don't "linger" because of the noise, but if we could eat in the bar area, we'd probably stay a lot longer. We are very happy to have Encore just blocks from our home and we look forward to "patio season", which we REALLY enjoy!"

"We were there on a very slow night-Tuesday. No host to be found, rest of party was already seated so we wandered in to find them. No waitress appeared for 10-15 minutes. I stopped one who had walked past us on several occasions. She apologized and said she didn't know we were her table. After that service was clunky at best. Mussels were very good, hamburgers just ok. Might go back but not too likely. Would have gone back if waitress had done anything to rectify bad service e.g offer to buy a free dessert for table."

"We don't eat out often so when we do, we want the food and the environment to be worthwhile. Encore was a great value and a great experience - excellent food prepared creatively and unusually, relaxed and comfortable atmosphere, prompt service. The broccoli could have been a little less salty and the room could have been a little quieter but all in all, it was wonderful. This occassion was a family holiday gathering prior to a concert at the Denver Performing Arts Complex and no one in the party had been to Encore before. No one was disappointed. We will return when another special occassion arises. It is great to have this quality in a local, neighborhood restaurant."

"My friend and I were disappointed with our lunch choices. I had a flat bread pizza which was burnt--with their 2nd try it was not baked well enough and the bottom was still partly blackened (burnt?). My friend had a chicken salad--but the dressing overwhelmed the taste of the entree and the shredded lettuce was of "poor" quality. The wait person did not check back with us after we were served. I asked another wait person, standing around in the kitchen talking to the "chef", if the burnt pizza was too well done. He was very nice and quickly said he would replace it with another--though once served no one checked on us again and their second try was quite awful though I ate a few bites (I was hungry!!) I will not go back to this restaurant"

"I like Encore and I think their food is good, but often what you get is a little heavy-handed. A couple of notes:

I'm a huge fan of artichokes and theirs is nice, but it always arrives soaked in butter or oil and is very messy to eat--not to mention a little off-putting.

I also had a side of really tasty fries that came out absolutely covered in a sauce that I don't recall being mentioned on the menu. It kind of felt wrong, and it was lucky I actually liked the sauce, because I would have not been able to eat even one piece otherwise. My partner, on the other hand, couldn't stand the sauce.

On a positive note, their burger is one of the best I've had in Denver, and they have some killer non-traditional jalapeno poppers."

"Our trip to Encore came after debating 1/2 a dozen other restaurants - in the end, we decided just to go to our local favorite. Encore's fall menu is terrific and affordable for the quality of food, service and ambience. Also, it's worth stopping by if only to see what the specials are - the chef has some real surprises up his sleeve, including the incredible elk stew over house-made gnocchi that I had on this visit. It truly was one of the most unique & flavorful dishes I've ever had in Denver."
