Liv's is the brainchild of John and Kristine Brescio. He is a French Culinary Institute-trained chef who worked at Tavern on the Green and Judson Grill in New York as well as Aux Delices in Greenwich. Liv's is names for the Brescio's young daughter Olivia, a photogenic tyke whose black and white blowups grace the walls. 'The combination of easy comfort and really good food makes Liv’s Oyster Bar in Old Saybrook such a find' - The NY Times.

"We took our friends to the Sunday Supper Club. The chef's selections, both wine and food, were a consistent delight. An extremely memorable experience. The server was enthusiastic and gave thoughtful explanations of each dish and wine. We will definitely return for the Sunday Supper Club. (we already regularly go on Wednesdays for the $1 oysters)"

"The service from hostess to bartender to server and bus person were STELLAR. We had delicious drinks and were surprised to see multiples of our favorite summer French white, Sancerre, on the wine list and it was available by the glass! The server was knowledgeable about the oyster selection and the food was absolutely delicious. Our group loved the pea soup topped with a sea scallop and New England clam chowder, the Char, the Pork Chop, the Sea Scallops and the Hangar Steak all of which were perfectly prepared. The broccoli rabe and gnocchi sides were delicious and fresh. We shared a bananas foster-parfait and dessert coffees, again delicious. Highly recommend and worth every penny !"

"My first visit to Liv's was a good one and I would return. The oysters lived up to my expectations, and including the early evening $1 special, the prices were right. Clam chowder was tasty and hot, our meals were nicely prepared and original. Dessert (banana parfait) was particularly good. I am glad I ordered it even though I was stuffed! The margarita was excellent too. Service was just right, polite, attentive and professional, not overbearing in any way.
Only issue was ambiance was not what I expected. We went early (5:45) and were one of the few patrons there (even though OpenTable said there were no availabilities until 8:30). The music was kind of strange (Journey?)) and the decor needs some updating."

"Everyone's food was delicious, service was very good; attentive but not intrusive. My companions enjoyed their raw oysters and clam appetizers. All four of us enjoyed our entrees tremendously. Dinner portion sizes were perfect. My halibut was also prepared to perfection and they had no problem accomodating requests to omit certain ingredients. Restaurant was a bit noisy, next time will reserve a corner table. Maybe some acoustic tiles on ceiling would help. But we will definitely come back again for the top quality, delicious fresh food."

"We live about 45 minutes away and have been to Liv's on several occasions. The oysters are wonderful! Always fresh and labeled so you know which ones are your faves. The truffle fries and the grilled flatbread are a must. The shrimp cocktail was sweet and tender ( and huge). Our entrees were delicious; we got the halibut, scallops, and the trout and snapper specials. Our server was very attentive and kept our table clean and our drinks full. We are already looking forward to our next visit!"

"The oysters couldn't be any fresher. The happy hour menu is a great deal - it allowed me to try several items in smaller portions that I will most likely order in the future. An added bonus was that bottles of wine were 1/2 price. Don't know whether this is a weekly event on Thursdays or just a one time deal, but we were able to enjoy a very nice bottle at a very reasonable price. This is always our favorite restaurant when attending events at The Kate."

"I wasdriving from NY and my friend from RI. We picked Old Saybrook as a half way point to meet for dinner. I then picked Liv's by searching online and reading the menu and restaurant history. What a find!!! We were thrilled to find it was half price oyster night. We started with a dozen. We continued on with the beet salad....fantastic! I had the scallops for my entree and my friend had the tuna. We ended with the flourless chocolate cake. Our drinks were made perfectly and the meal was exceptional right down to our cappuccino! The staff....We were seated by a lovely lady. She was delightful. Joe our waiter was attentive and personable. We will be back soon. Thank you Liv's!"

"Overall good experience. The food was good, and the wait staff was good. Little dissappointed on the greeting, host. The woman and man who were working the front were almost irritated that either we were there or they had to be there, or maybe that they were working with each other, not sure. When she sat us, I thought she was just very bland, almost like she had no concern or care that we have a great dining experience from start to finish. Overall staff had kind of a somber mood."

"The oysters were fresh and tasty with a good local and expanded East Coast selection. The seafood was skillfully prepared with sauces and seasoning that were not what I would consider standard and at the same time very nice. There are limited non-seafood options so if your not a seafood lover, you might want to try another spot but if you love seafood, prepared and served well, Liv's will be a treat."

"We were in saybrook for Easter weekend, staying at the Saybrook Inn, and I found Liv's on Open Table. We had a fabulous experience. The selection of oysters was amazing (I loved how they labeled them for you), service exception (very attentive yet not overbearing), the entrees very good (we split the tuna and scallop entrees). Delicious! The portions were perfect. It seems there are a lot of locals who frequently go there and we will make it a point to go back when we are in Old Saybrook again."

The main entrees were superb. I had the short ribs. They were like butter-- over a bed of polenta that was divine.
Accompanied by grilled baby Brussels sprouts and fennel it made for a lovely meal.
My dessert was the best I have ever ever had... Fresh, warm, sweet potato donuts paired with a creamy pannacotta type dipping
bowl with caramel drizzles... I shared with the table and they all had the same reaction: "omg! These are
unbelievable!"
Service was just enough as well-- there when we needed it, not saccharin--just great.

Liv's Oyster Bar "lives" up to it's name with a nice variety of oysters at market value.The decor is fresh and the crowd lively. Nice Bar. However, if you are not coming to Liv's to eat the oysters, the menu is limiting. The chef is "trying too Hard" to be different. The only "meat" selection was a "hanger steak" that did not sound appitising once we inquired about the dish. Another disappointment is that the majority of the seafood selections included "bacon", which seem to be "sprinkled" on every dish. I did enjoy the "Smoked Trout" salad and the "Yellowtail Tuna" was seared to perfection. I thought the main entree Trout at $25.00 was somewhat ridiculus in price and the specialty "Winter Sangria" was terrible."

"Very good food but very small portions for the price. 2 small pieces of cod with some spinach underneath was $26. Put some rice or potatoes underneath. When I got home I had to have something to eat. At $141.00 with tip, I shouldn't leave any restaurant hungry"

"Food and service were excellent as always. I just wish the bar area was sectioned off from the dining area. As it happened there were a couple of VERY loud men at the bar who had very loud voices and loud laughs that were cheering and clapping for someone, possibly the man attending the raw bar. It was annoying to the point that I almost said something and it made conversation difficult."

"Great dinner! My wife and I have recently moved to East Haddam so getting to Old Saybrook is a breeze now and we can take advantage of some great restaurants near the shoreline. Liv's is one of those restaurants! It was our first time dining there and it also happened to be our 9th wedding anniversary. Thank you to Liv's for making it a great time!"

"We always have a lovely evening at Liv's. The food is dee-lish and the whole experience is exceptional. We had the beets salad, the flat bread minus the bacon and the seered tuna. All dishes were excellent. NB: The bar seems to be a magnet for attractive mature singles. Bravo, Liv's!"

"As usual, Liv's was a lovely evening: the receptionist arranged for a special birthday dessert for my wife, our waitress found an oyster course not on the menu, the oysters (Hood Canal and Pemaquid) were first-rate, and the service, again as usual, was top-notch. Thanks!"

"First time there. John our waiter was excellent! Oysters were very fresh and tasty. I had the Seared Tuna which I can not wait to have again. My husband had the special scallops with rice ( my husband has a bear appetite and was a bit disappointed in the size of the scallops and not enough to feed him). The wine John suggested to us was the best I ever had."

"This is not my 1st time at Liv's that is why I went back.I live 45 mins away but it is by far the best seafood around. The chef is excellent I cannot say enough about the flavor of the food and the quantity is perfect. Just one thing bring back the chicken pot pie! Our waiter was pleasant, attentive and courteous. The restaurant is clean and bright. I do recommend to everyone."

"Liv's wasn't too busy the night we went so service was excellent, friendly and attentive (I have not always had service this good here, especially when eating at the bar, strangely enough). Food was delicious, as usual, and it is nice to know we can always have a tasty meal at this local restaurant. It is one of our favorites and we only wish we could eat there more often (hard to get out for dinner regularly with three kids at home!). Spare ribs were perfectly cooked and my husband had the cod which was in a flavorful sauce. We shared the brownie dessert which was very flavorful and a perfect end to a nice evening. I highly recommend eating here!"

"I always enjoy a night out at Liv's. The oysters are always fresh, and an oyster sampler is a must when going. The scallops were so flavorful and although there are only 4 scallops it was just enough for me with the appetizer, salad and oyster sampler. The only negative is sitting by the front door can be a bit chilly on a cold night. They should consider handing a curtain in the doorway to keep out the cold air. Would defiantly go back."
