Waterboy
Our Goal at The Waterboy is to provide you with a wonderful dining experience. Taking inspiration from the cuisines of southern France and northern Italy, we feature a new menu every month to take full advantage of our local, seasonal ingredients. Our menu features naturally raised meats, local organic produce and freshly baked breads. Along with great service and a terrific, reasonably priced wine list, we think you will be quite pleased with a visit to The Waterboy.

"My mom and I have lunch at Waterboy once a month when I visit Sacramento from the Bay Area. The food is consistently great, and the wine list is excellent. The space is lovely, with wonderful light and artwork, and the ambiance is sophisticated but relaxed. The food is first rate -- everything is very fresh, and the flavors are subtle and interesting. The beet salad is the best I've had anywhere. The staff is wonderful, and they take great care of us. We love lingering and chatting over a relaxed lunch in this lovely restaurant, and we never feel rushed. It's by far my favorite restaurant in Sacramento, and it alwasy feels like a treat to dine there. We'll be back next month!"

"This was our second visit to Waterboy, and they outdid themselves. My wife and I split the mussels and frites appetizer, and it was either the best or tied for best bowl of mussels we've had. We moved on to salmon for her and scallops for me, and these too were superb. The biggest problem we had was that there were too many things on the menu that we wanted to try. Next time, I'm getting the frisee and arugula salad and more of those mussels!"

"All four of us raved about our dinners. I tried the Chestnut Crepe which was amazing. Lots of chicken and vegetables, all of which retained their individual flavors, which were fresh and delicious. Others who had halibut or bouillabaise thought their dinners were equally well prepared.
As always, Marcella is a delightful waitress, very warm, funny and knowledgeable."

"We always love going to The Waterboy. The food was unbelievably good. I had a lamb rago with rosemary pasta, artichoke hearts and mushrooms. My husband had the sea bass. Both were excellent. I love to go out and enjoy a dinner I couldn't make myself. Everything had several layers of favors, textures and color. Superb. It would not have been complete without our wonderful server, Marcella. She is friendly and efficient. My only complaint is to keep the blinds down until the sun has set and motto rush that. I'm not sure Kevin understood that concept or was happy about me asking him to lower them again. Other than that, good job Rick."

"Our 4th dinner there, we were seated at a quiet table. The menu had changed and only 2 items appealed to us. Husband ordered steak strips in spinach with red onion, which he liked. I ordered the fish of the day (tuna) which was prepared in big chunks with lots of veggies instead of potato. I sent the tuna back because the middle was uncooked, then finished 3/4th of it; as the very middle was still uncooked. The chef went the extra mile with the appetizer as spouse ordered the baguette and I cannot eat bread, so my portion was on a lettuce wrap and so delicious it should be on the menu! My husband had the strawberry ice cream and I the cream brule (yummy)! And, our waitress went the extra mile and her service was excellent."

"Mussels and frites were awesome and the ricotta ravioli. The pork and clams was heavy and fatty and the Humboldt fog salad was sparse. It's very noisy in there as it's packed. We were warmly welcomed and desserts were homemade and a must!

"We shared a mussel appetizer. My husband had scallops and I had wild salmon which was the special of the day. The other dishes were excellent but the salmon was perfection--seared to create a crusty exterior while moist and barely cooked on the inside. Service was friendly and efficient but not intrusive. The dessert was just okay--not up to the standard of the main courses. We will definitely make this a stop the next time we are in Sacramento."

"The veal sweetbreads were excellent, the best I have had so far in the US. The pork shoulder confit, clams, sausage, beans, fregola & greens was an unusual combination but ever so tasty entree. Equally delicious were the house-made sausage appetizer and rock-cod. The wine list was disappointing, favoring "good" French wines over "very good" local wines. For example, there are many wineries within driving distance of this restaurant that produce a Sauvignon Blanc superior to the Domaine Massiac, France, or a light red, better than the Ruffino, Italy."

"We've had this restuarant on our list to try for the last year, and we finally made it! Wish we wouldn't have waited so long to make the visit, but everything about it was really great! Our server and staff were all very friendly. The oysters were a great start as an appetizer, along with the tapinade crostinis were delicious! The watercress and mushroom was salad was light yet had so much wonderful flavor. For our our entrees, the veggie raviolis were wonderful, and the scallops were very good!"

"Recently celebrated a birthday at Waterboy. The food was very good and only slightly exceeded by the outstanding service! The wine list seemed extensive and well rounded, with good price points. Perhaps a few more local wines would be nice.
I could make a meal on the Mussels appetizer....hummm.. I bet they would prepare it as an entree if you asked. Maybe next time.

"The food is wonderful. We usually stick with appetizers and salads, as they are so tasty and satisfying. My partner and I highly recommend the cheese plate and the Waterboy Caesar Salad with extra anchovies on top. When available, the deviled eggs are unique and indescribably delicious. The wait staff and bartenders set the standard for excellent service and pleasant interaction.
Whenever the weather permits, we sit outside at the sidewalk tables on Capitol, which tends to be both peaceful and intermittently entertaining. I admit it's my favorite restaurant overall."

"At Waterboy, everything is absolutely first class--the food, the service, and the overall experience. At a recent dinner we observed the manager of one prominent Sacramento restaurant and the owner of another dining at separate tables with friends. We've often seen Daryl Corti there pairing wines with Waterboy's food. The food is consistently excellent and prepared and with care and professional attention to detail. The service is superb--friendly, proud, and professional with no trace of the haughtiness that infects some local fine dining spots. We've eaten at most of Sacramento's best restaurants on multiple occasions, but none can match Waterboy for an overall outstanding dining experience."

"Always a favorite--whenever I need a 'go to' spot in downtown Sac, I head to Waterboy. The food is always wonderful--fresh, beautifully-prepared, tasty. The menu does change but the standards, which for me are the crostini trio, antipasto or cheese plates and the day boat scallops, are always waiting for me. The burger is yummy too. The service has consistently added to the experience which is why I keep returning. Save room for desert--they serve some of the best in Sac (I dream about the lemon cream cake). The owner (who often greets you at the door) is just lovely and clearly committed to providing a quality experience for his patrons. I can't recommend this place enough--it's in the top 10 in Sacramento."

"The food was great, but it was very noisy. The ceilings are high and the chatter echoes off the walls so that it is difficult to talk to people at your table. Definitely not the right place for a romantic dinner. There are huge windows which allow nice views of the area and lots of light. The food was excellent, however, and service was good. "Enjoyed our meal at Waterboy on a recent weekend trip to Sacramento. Since we live in the SF/Bay area our expectations for restaurants are high, but Waterboy can compete with the best of them. We started with two of the house cocktails which were very good. My main course of the Dayboat scallops was well-prepared and delicious. My husband had the mixed grill, which was also very good. We shared the pineapple upside-down cake, a dessert not often found on restaurant menus, and enjoyed it. The decor is airy and inviting. Our server was competent, if a bit over-bearing. We would go back."

"We had a lovely family birthday dinner and the food was top notch. Everyone loved their salad and entree and would definitely go back. The beet salad was so tasty and the scallops were done perfectly with a lovely accompaniment of gnocchi and veggies. I really like that there wasn't a flavor that over competed with the scallops. The same with the salads. I love a chef who lets the food speak for itself and doesn't try to add so many competing flavors that your mouth gets overwhelmed. Lovely job and a lovely evening for a birthday!"

"I took my parents here for an anniversary dinner and we all really enjoyed ourselves. I wanted a place that was nice enough to fit the occasion, and offered a fine dining experience, but also had an atmosphere that wasn't stuffy and would be conducive to having children as I was bringing my 2 year old daughter. Waterboy scored high on all counts. My mom who is usually very picky ordered a Sole dinner special; it was the first time I'd ever seen her clean her plate in recent memory. I ordered a duck breast and leg confit and everything from duck itself to the vegetables it sat on were incredible. Everyone in our party enjoyed their dinner, the wait staff was extremely friendly and attentive, and overall we had a fantastic experience."

"As always this restaurant is excellent and very accommodating. I am gluten intolerant and they made certain I was well taken care of and my dishes were fine. None of my companions have the same issues and they were sated, as well. We had oysters and a cheese plate to start - oysters were fresh and tangy with a touch of heat and the cheeses were diverse and fit for all palates. For a second course, I had sweetbreads with greens and they were superb; crispy on the outside and soft and velvety inside. Steak specials for the men as main courses and fish for the ladies. Both were excellent. Steak was done just right with au gratin potatoes and asparagus. Fish special was crisp and light. Rick Mahon runs a great place. Eat Here"

"Waterboy is Sacramento's finest restaurant. Our Easter dinner was fabulous,. Each dish was creative and flawlessly executed (try the antipasto platter--it's to die for). And the service was impeccable, as it always is. We have been going to Waterboy for years. It is first class top to bottom and never disappoints."

"I appreciated the fact that Waterboy was very accomodating of our group because we made a couple of changes in our reservation and one person was probably going to arrive 1/2 to an hour late because they were driving from out of town. The restaurant kindly gave us the larger table to accommodate the latecomer and did not make us feel weird because of it. On the phone, and at the restaurant, the staff made us feel welcome."

"This was our first time at Waterboy. The food was impressive - nicely presented and delicious! The service was spotty as I had to remind the server several times about who had ordered what (and my glass of wine never appeared as well). After a reminder about the birthdays at the table, not even a "Happy Birthday" was spoken. We'll try again because the food was so good."

"Excellent service, attentive and helpful but not intrusive. Delicious food--7 people chose 5 different entrees, and everyone was happy, except the short ribs were a little too salty. Duck, quail, squid ink pasta with seafood and mixed grill were great. Loved the pork and beans, sweetbreads, beet salad, caesar, and arugula salad. Desserts were wonderful, too. Tried four of them--carrot cake, creme brulee, lemon cream cake, and apple tart. Loved them all, especially the apple."

"Waterboy was such a pleasure. The food was fabulous! The service was very good as well ~ our waitress was a gem! I only gave Waterboy a 4 our of 5 for overall experience because of the seating arrangements. You have to special request one of the tables by the window or one of the tables with more spacious room in the middle of the restaurant. Otherwise you are seated in a very crowed way, sort of bench like seating with tables very close together and really no privacy to talk with your date. This situation really doesn't take away from the fabulous experience of Waterboy, but my husband and I will definitely being making a special request for seating next time we enjoy this restaurant."

I have never before been disappointed but this time, the food simply was not up to par; at least what I ordered. Very salty and uninteresting. I was surprised. "had a reservation and was taken to the worst table in the room, by the door asked to be move in an empty dining and was told that was not possible due to previous commitments. by the time we were finished those tables were still empty!!!!! this put me off and i could not enjoy my meal."
