Red Pony Restaurant
With two floors of casual fine dining (as well as an outdoor deck), Red Pony Restaurant has clearly become the favorite destination for great food on Franklin's historic Main Street. Chefs Jason McConnell and Carl Schultheis have teamed up to create a fun, wide ranging menu utilizing the freshest locally grown produce, meats and seafood. The two chefs have worked together for six years and their diverse cooking styles appear in new items daily. Voted "Best New Restaurant 2006" by Southern Exposure Magazine, Red Pony's eclectic menu has been called "skillful in its simplicity while intriguing in its worldliness."

"The food was superb. We got the free gnocchi for first-time diners and it was incredible. The bread sampler was great and our shrimp and grits almost perfect (too much bacon, surprisingly). Best restaurant we have tried in the Nashville area."

"Imagine an executive chef, decided to take southern-style cooking, fresh, local ingredients, and dynamic flavors, put it in a 100+ year old brick-wood structure, shake up some signature, unique ingredient martini menu. Oh, and they WANT you to love their restaurant, and have an exceptional experience, that is evident. Not very many "misses" here...expect a memorable evening/dinner/experience...in a small town setting. Parking is NOT good...but what you'd expect in a small town square retail area."

"Food was wonderful. Since it was our first visit, the chef sent out a couple of little tasting plates for us between courses. Had the B.LT. which is a Red Pony staple item, Bacon Tomato and Lobster over ravioli and it was excellent. My husband had the halibut which actually comes with beets to our surprise but they were delicious and he ate them all!"

"I picked this restaurant after reading great reviews & it's proximity to the theatre in Franklin. It's a little on the pricey side, but well worth it. The food is spectacular & the service was above expectation. When our waiter found out we had a show to get to later, he made sure that he knew what time it started so that we wouldn't be late.
Because of the price (my meal was around $40 including tip) I would probably reserve it for special occasions, but will definitely go again.
Also, I tried the coconut cake for dessert. It was probably the best coconut cake I've ever had.....and it was gluten free!"

"In a word? Awful. The appetizers were good, my drink was tasty, and the bread basket was phenomenal. Unfortunately all three of our entrees left a lot to be desired. The "slow-roasted" pork was rubbery. The shrimp & grits were awful- tons of bacon and odd spices, and the halibut was nicely cooked but tasted like a salt lick and had too much pepper too. I can understand an occasional mis-step at even the best restaurants, but for all three dishes to be bad, we don't expect to return."

"We loved the decor. The food selection was outside of the box. Wonderful salads and bread basket. My husband ordered the elk and asked the chef to "spice it up" for him, which he did with peppercorns.....he loved it. I had the lamb chops, which were wonderful as well. They not only have a great wine list, but offer quite a few in pony bottles which is great for us because we don't like the same wines. We had the coconut cake for dessert and it was spectacular. Roland was a great waiter, we were very well taken care of. We will be back."

"I was recommended this restaurant by a friend who said the ribeye was the best steak he had ever had. I booked a reservation and it was delightful from beginning to end. The service was perfect, our waiter was very knowledgeable and helpful, offering lots of off-menu options. The drink menu was extensive. We got the special $5 martinis they were offering that night and they were great.
Everything we ate was delicious - deviled eggs, halibut, and desserts were all incredible. The only downside is they overcooked my steak quite a bit. I asked for medium rare and it came out medium well. That doesn't bother me as much as it would some people, but I was still put off a little. Everything else was great, though."

"Saturday evening, Convention in town + big birthday bash going on = VERY busy place and a bit of a wait (even with a reservation). It was worth every minute of wait and had a meal that probably blew away every meal out we've had in the past several years. Personally, Southern style shrimp and grits is one of my all time favorites and theirs was way beyond special ! We'll definitely be back when we're in the area."

"That we dined on Tuesday, for on the night that we dined, we enjoyed half off wine. Our waiter Paul was first rate! Not sure if the restaurant allows service request, but if they do I would request every time that we dined. One note...when my son ordered a beer, Paul asked for ID. He assured my son that he cards anyone he believed to be younger than himself. Strange. He never carded me."

"Atmosphere is nice for date night. Menu generally great. My date loved her fish. Service very attentive. Not recommended for gluten-free vegans as they really did not know what to do with me, but really tried hard. They do have a Med Sampler as a starter that normally would have worked for me, but having had humus for lunch, I took a pass. Undoubtedly the best place in Franklin, but just not for us quirky gluten-free, vegans."

"We had a fantastic experience this weekend. The food was great, the service was excellent, the atmosphere was superb. The guacamole was awesome, but the bacon jam was even better! We were a large group (13 people), but the service was impeccable and all the food was delivered in a timely fashion and prepared exactly as ordered. Will definitely be going back soon."

"I understand the concept here is Southern gourmet, but my experience of Southern cooking is broader than bacon-themed dishes. Way too much bacon on the menu.
The mezze plate was tasty. The brussel sprout salad was equally tasty. The fish entree was rich and on the heavy side, but by the time it arrived at the table I was ready to eat anything. Gave food 3 stars because it does give downtown Franklin a new twist. Wouldn't go out of my way to return.

I have eaten here several times and the only slight complaint would be that the service is a little "uppity". I have had the exact same server the past 3 visits and she has not been the greatest. I will say that this last time with just my husband and I she was a little nicer but the previous two visits with a group, she was not as helpful. She seemed bothered by actually "serving". That being said the good is awesome, the menu is eclectic an the atmosphere is great so I will go back. Just hoping to get a different server next time!"

"We were visiting our daughter who just moved to Nashville and wanted to spend the day in Franklin. What a beautiful city. We had a wonderful dinner at the Red Pony! We enjoyed 2 appetizers: sushi and hummus with pita bread. Both were excellent. I had beef tenderloin. It was cooked perfect. My daughter had the elk tenderloin and it was also cooked perfect. My son had the special dinner of the night which was lobster ravioli. He loved it. But all of us tried my husbands meal which was fish and grits and agreed it was the best. The pecan pie with bourbon ice cream was to die for. We all had a great time and the chef should be commended for excellent food. We highly recommend the Red Pony!"

"We arrived late (8:45) because our out of town guest ran late. We were seated on the outside terrace, big mistake! The noise was so loud from the alley, yelling, screaming and at around 11 a basketball game started right under us. We were very embarrassed since we were entertaining a guest from L.A. The server told us they were changing their menu so they were out of almost everything we ordered. Food was O.K. not as good as I was expecting. We probably would have had a better experience had we sat inside. As it is, terrible experience, would probably not go back."

"Reviewed as one of the best places to eat in Franklin, my wife and I were eagerly looking forward to our first visit. The atmosphere and the wait staff were exactly as described. However, the food was a major disappointment. Everything from my Kale Caesar to even our shared Butterscotch Pot au Creme was super salty. The oily, bread crumb covered, gnocchi (a gift to us as first time guests) was tasteless. We each took a bite and pushed the plate away, somewhat embarrassed to turn down the gift. My wife' Sesame Asparagus arrived with overcooked asparagus and no discernible taste of sesame. I hate to say it, but my beef tenderloin was inferior to what I've had at a Longhorn. Overall, this experience was an unexpected disappointment."

"I dined at The Red Pony twice during my recent visit to the Nashville area. On both occasions I had a thoroughly good experience and would highly recommend this restaurant. The atmosphere is friendly, service impeccable, food fresh and tasty, good wine list and some great cocktails as well. Anyone who lives anywhere near this place, or any visitor should make this a must-do activity!!"

"I was blown away with the wine list and bar menu. Hats off to the person that put that together. The chardonnay line up is class A with Cakebread, Grgich, Rambaurer, and Shafer which are some of the best. My favorite cab producer was there and responsibly priced, Trefethen. The cocktail menu was inventive but also represented the classics. I would go back just to drink and have apps. The guacamole, pizza, and charcuterie were all very good. Our server was James and he was terrific. We had a large group of 9 with 5 kids. A nightmare for any server. He was very professional and met our needs perfectly. I would recommend him highly."

"Couldnt have asked for a better experience from beginning to end. only thing id correct as soon as possible is if youre going to have a menu change. i'd correct that before taking an item off the menu and it still be there. Ala fried chicken. of course the person i happen to be with desires it (lucky us) then has to spend ten more minutes trying to fig it out. outside of that, everything was perfect."

"We had an absolutely wonderful dining experience at the Red Pony, preceding a fabulous live performance at the Franklin Theatre down the block. Everything clicked here, from the moment we arrived until we departed. We started by splitting their fabulous guacamole, a very nice portion, served on fresh lettuce in a black lava bowl with homemade tortilla chips. Delicious! Then we split a grilled romaine salad topped with bacon jam and bleu cheese -- truly one of nicest blends of flavors. Lastly we split a wonderful red snapper preparation with a root vegetables "pancake" that was off-the-charts. The bar delivers very nice drinks, reasonably priced, but they also have a plentiful wine list as well. The various dishes were promptly delivered."

"It doesn't get any better than the Red Pony! We don't dine there frequently as we live about 30 minutes away! When we make the drive, we always agree, it simply is the best gourmet dining in the Nashville area. The food is always creative and succulent. To me, this is a New York restaurant tucked into the quiet charm of Franklin! Parking can be an adventure, but this night, we found a space easily.
The other part of the equation is the service. Attention, EveryonE, Service is not dead, but alive and well at The Red Pony. Ben was our server and when the restaurant did not have the coffee drink our overseas guest requested, he went to Starbucks and brought it back! Ben went over the top for us and it was not over missed !"

"It had been a while since I'd eaten at the Red Pony. Frankly, I thought it was a little over-priced for what you got. However, the ambiance is good and it was a special occasion. They have changed their menu and the portions were plentiful and very filling. (We had the elk and snapper and both were tender and flavorful.
