The East Village's favorite fish shack is hoping to become the Upper West Side's favorite as well, with a second location at 568 Amsterdam Avenue, near 88th St. Danny Abrams, who has owned and operated some of the city's favorite restaurants, including The Red Cat and The Harrison, is the principle owner, and Laurence Edelman (former sous chef at The Red Cat) will be the Executive Chef. On the menu will be Mermaid Inn favorites like the Lobster Sandwich with Old Bay Fries and Spaghetti with Salad on Top, as well as assorted seasonal seafood dishes of Edelman's own design. The uptown location will also feature an expanded raw bar, brunch and the same casual and cozy "shore feel" as the downtown spot.

"I've been to this restaurant twice and loved the food each time. The Idaho brook trout was a great special and the shrimp cocktail is also very good. The menu may seem limited but I say if you like seafood, you can't go wrong with the Mermaid Inn. The fortune at the end of your meal is a cute little experience that helps you to never forget your time at the Mermaid Inn."

"Love the Mermaid Inn. I have been to both locations and the food and service are always consistent. The oysters are some of the best in the city. The staff is always friendly and attentive. I continue to go back again and again. Well worth the trip if have not been."

"This highly acclaimed seafood restaurant is the place to go for the freshest raw oysters on the half shell. The raw bar selection isn't is ever changing and always features one or two delicious surprises (e.g., Kusshi and Malaspina). I also love the $1 oyster special (5-7PM, always super fresh) and $20 Blue Plate Special (1 beer, a massive lobster roll and old bay fries). The service is friendly and knowledgeable. The food is always fresh and carefully prepared. The ambiance is warm and welcoming."

"Liked the downtown Mermaid Inn when it opened years ago, was curious about new uptown location since it's near our home. It's better than downtown. Not as noisy, better service and the seafood was a home run. I've caught and cooked plenty of my own fish, so I was stunned and thrilled to find the brunch items we ordered were fresh and properly cooked. I've never had lobster salad prepared so well, and my husband's fish tacos reminded him of the ones he used to buy on the beach after surfing. Service was friendly, attentive and unobstrusive. Prices are painless. And have at least one slice from the bread basket before you ask them to take it away - it's very good bread! We'll be back soon."

"Restaurant very noisy. Extremely limited menu--5 entrees, 2 of which were sandwiches. When we asked for a dessert menu, we were told there is none, but you will get dessert! A while later our server dropped "dessert" in front of us--small demi tasse cups filled with gluey, thick chocolate pudding topped with a dollop of stale whipped topping. I must say the total for 4 people was very reasonable, and that must be why anyone eats there. It is certainly not for the food or ambience."

"I liked the diversity of the menu - you could have an updated "twist" of a casual items like a fish taco or a lobster roll. But you could also have some interesting items as well. I had the calamari, frisee and feta salad - OUTSTANDING!! Not an extensive menu, but quality, and something for all sorts of eaters. We had two waiters helping us - one was dull and mediocre, one was fun, pleasant and helpful. The service was good - just 1/2 of it lacked personality, which in a small neighborhood resturant, is part of the draw."

"Perfect fish and fresh, delicious shellfish every time. If the roasted fish is trout, order it. With no dessert menu, the offering of chocolate pudding for everyone is a nice touch. Sit in the back if you want the feel of a New England seaside inn. In the front is a livelier (and noisier) bar and small table scene."

"Maybe I ordered wrong. The fried clams were okay, nothing special. The special beer-battered cod with potato chips and hush puppies was a disappointment all along the line. The potato chips were homemade but soggy. The cod was underseasoned. The hush puppies were inedible. It's in my neighborhood so I might try it again but I'd never go out of my way. Pleasant cozy decor in the back area."

"Mermaid Inn UWS reminds me why I stopped eating at Mermaid Inn downtown.
Pedestrian food and a very limited menu.
The Neptune Room was a neighborhood gem and a sore loss. I know this place is not expensive (save for the lobster roll??) but it's not worth it. Hint:If you need a lobster roll wait till you can sit outside and go to Fairway in Brooklyn where it's almost one third the price and quite good and you get a view of the harbor...boats and all that. Hint:If you need a seafood restaurant on the UWS go to Ocean Grill."

"Love this place. When we lived on the east side we went, frequently, to the location on 2nd ave. The uptown space looks just the same. And the menu is fun, not complicated, and food was terrific. Best of all, it is just 2 blocks from our new apartment."

"I've been to the Mermaid Inn locations in the east village and upper west side. Had a great experience both times. The staff in both places were quick, friendly and helpful. I had the skate wing fish at the east village and cod fish on the upper west and both were delicious. The complimentary little cup of pudding they give at the end is a nice touch. And of course the little "magic fish" fortune. The atmosphere is very elegant and charming. My friends and i love this place and would definitely go back again."

"I dine here with a buddy about once a month. The blue Plate Special is my item of choice. A lobster salad sandwich (on a perfect brioche bun), Old Bay seasoned french fries, a beer (I dont drink so I get a soft drink as a substitute) and a little chocolate pudding to end (too heavy to call mousse); all for $20.00! Sometimes I add the roasted oysters or seared calamari salad (all delish).
The staff is friendly and I find that this is a great place for us to unwind after work.
Get there early (5:30pm) or make a reservation.
FYI- area parking not bad for Manhattan!"

"My friend and I share the appetizers. The fried clams were the best I've had in years - you can actually taste the clams! They went well with the green salad. My friend had spaghetti with clams and mussels garnished with arugula on top - delicious! My Blue Plate special, served between 5:30-7:00pm daily, was a lobster sandwich, Old Bay fries and glass of ale, a steal at $20. It seemed to be a popular dish, as the orders kept coming out of the kitchen to other tables. The restaurant was almost filled on Tuesday night, but the noise level wasn't as loud as it could have been. I would defifnitely go back - soon!"

"I loved the special, which was a mahi mahi over a bed of sauteed veggies and pureed potatoes. The pudding dessert at the end was sweet, and the fortuneteller fish was certainly a unique touch. My only complaint is that the tables are quite close together so that the woman next to me pretty much dominated our conversation - even though she wasn't part of it. However, they were no closer than in most restaurants, and I suppose you just have to be lucky with who sits next to you."

"It was nice to find a good fish place on the Upper West side as my previous favorite closed in the Fall. The shrimp cocktail was fresh and delicious and the shrimp were clearly not frozen as they are in many restaurants. The lobster bisque was innovative and tasty. For the main I had a whole Idaho brook trout which was simply prepared in olive oil and herbs. The fish had been expertly deboned, extra points there. I will definitely be going back."

"We recently moved to the neighborhood and were looking for a good dining experience near by. Three of us went after a performance at Lincoln Center and it was just what we were looking for. Since we didn't know when the performance was out, I left a message giving what I thought was the time. I got a personal call back saying they would do their best to accomodate us when we arrived. The place was jumping when we walked in but they greeted us by name, took our coats and got us a table within a few minutes. The food was great, fresh and with interesting choices. And they surprised us with small chocolate puddings at the end. Has the feel of a lively "our place" - where everybody knows your name."

"It's relatively inexpensive place and not a bad value. But I really thought it would be a bit more upscale than it was. It's really kind of a clams shack in Manhattan -- a lot of fried stuff (good versions but fried nonetheless) -- lobster rolls are fair, nothing special. The night I had dinner there was only ONE grilled/broiled fish choice. Some good, inexpensive wine choices. Not bad for what it is but very simple. And it's VERY noisy (and not in a positive way), especially the back room."
