Asia de Cuba - New York reservations Asia de Cuba - New York

237 Madison Avenue
New York, NY 10016

Set in the Morgans Hotel on Madison Avenue, Asia de Cuba combines Asian flavors and cooking techniques with home-style Cuban cuisine. Dishes are dramatically presented and meant to be shared. The centerpiece of this Philippe Starck designed restaurant is a 25-foot long communal table overlooked by a two-story holographic waterfall. Enjoy exotic cocktails in our lounge and bar, voted "Most Popular" in the 2003/2004 Zagat Nightlife Survey.

Review 2 for Asia de Cuba - New York

Overall Rating 3.0 out of 5 (Good)
"Overall the experience was pretty memorable, although the appetizers were significantly better than the entree. Do not order the pork; it is so fatty and extremely unappealing to say the least. The calamari salad and the beef dumplings however were very tasty. We also ordered the lobster mashed potatoes, which were a bit sweet for my taste but had massive chunks of lobster…YUM!"

Review 9 for Asia de Cuba - New York

Overall Rating 1.0 out of 5 (Poor)
"Appetizers that our server suggested was the scallops and the thai basil shrimp. Scallops were cooked well, but lacked any flavour. We were not sure what it was served over, but tasted some type of berry (cranberry)? It was not explained when dropped. The shrimp was very bland also. We ended up asking for salt and pepper- even after that we left half the dish. The best thing on the plate for the appetizers was the pineapple- which tasted canned. Entree: we ordered the sustainable sea bass. Again, this was dropped and no one explained what we were eating. The dish was overabundant with some type of vegtable, the flan was the best thing on the plate. The Sea bass was cooked well, but bland. A very non memorable dinner."

Review 11 for Asia de Cuba - New York

Overall Rating 5.0 out of 5 (Outstanding)
"The food is worth its weight in gold. Even the first bite is something unforgettable. The entrance is easily missed. Its just a door but when you walk in its beautifully lit with beautiful white curtains cascading towards the ground. The staff is the friendliest, ask them anything and what food they suggest. The drinks are great too. It is pricey so expect to pay a pretty penny but it is worth it."

"I was so excited to return to Asia de Cuba. I hadn't been there since 2004, and I took my girlfriend for her birthday and wow was it great. The food was better than I even remembered and of course the Calamari Salad is so incredible!! I really loved Randy, our server and think he is worth the evening. He makes it all so extra fun. We can't wait to go back!!! Thank you, thank you, thank you!"

Review 16 for Asia de Cuba - New York

Overall Rating 2.0 out of 5 (Fair)
"I dont know how its possible that I had read good reviews. Maybe b/c it was restaurant week? With the exception of chicken wings - the food was horrible. Both of our rice dishes were dry. Salmon was charred. Lamb was like rubber. And the famed calamari salad was boring. Felt like an all you can eat buffet - but at your table. I really wanted to like it but they fell short. Maybe I just hit it on a bad night."

Review 19 for Asia de Cuba - New York

Overall Rating 3.0 out of 5 (Good)
"The mojitos are the best in the city. The starters (beef dumpling and coconut chicken) were very good, but the main course of cuban chicken with a tamirand sauce was dry and disapointing, although the coconut rice was excellent. The dessert (chocolate cake) was beautifully presented, but was also dry and tasted old. The atmosphere is very "stark" like, and the claim of being the original location in the chain means the other locations have to match their excellence - to be blunt, the San Francisco location at the Clift is much cooler and the food and service much better. I think it is time for the mother to learn from the kids."

Review 23 for Asia de Cuba - New York

Overall Rating 4.0 out of 5 (Very Good)
"Overall, simply very cool.

The place makes you feel like you're in South Beach but with a clientele in less revealing dress code than they would be wearing in Miami. The space itself is very modern, with a lot of white, mood lighting and clean lines. Overall, very hip. The upstairs bar area has a smallish bar but small tables and chairs overlooking the dining area below, which has a long shared dining table in its center.

As for the food itself, it was very good and very lovely in its presentation. Note, the portions are HUGE and meant to be shared. We were three and still couldn't finish all of it all. Everything we had was a perfect fusion of flavors -- Thai with Indian, etc.

Review 24 for Asia de Cuba - New York

Overall Rating 3.0 out of 5 (Good)
"The cost outweighs the benefits. The food is hit or miss. The ribs on the appetizer menu was the best thing I had. The Strip Steak was just okay. If the restaurant was not so expensive and because all of my friends love this place, I would go back to try other foods. But based on my experience, I feel that it's not worth it. One final note, the coat check girl's attitude was extremely nasty!"

Review 27 for Asia de Cuba - New York

Overall Rating 4.0 out of 5 (Very Good)
"The staff was attentive and friendly. The appetizers were amazing! The drinks were great but WAY over-priced. The actual entrees were very bland. The taste was as if they poured sauce on the meat or fish without seasoning it first. That was the consensus at the table. I would not return for actual dinner just for the appetizers. The ambiance was chic and hip. The lighting gave a cozy but upbeat feeling to the space. The booths around the perimeter of the lower level make for an intimate setting even for a group of 6 or more."

Overall Rating 3.0 out of 5 (Good)
"I normally get the chicken as I do not eat red meat and the waiter recommended the bass, which I didn't like. I didnt enjoy the vegetables or the usually good lobster mash. Perhaps it was because we had a late reservation, but there was a significant difference in the taste of the food that night. I would have loved to have enjoyed my dinner since my boyfriend spent almost $300 on that meal."

Overall Rating 3.0 out of 5 (Good)
"not the resturant for resturant week. They did not stick to the bargain price of $35-on the menu it said if you order scallops-$10 mor,Ahi tuna $20 MORE-AND WE ENDED UP SPENDING MORE then a regular dinner .So I think its a ruse to get people in and then make us spent more. The resturant ownrer if he decides to participate in the resturant week-then he should only have the items which are included in $35 MENU and not charge extra like NCL cruise line.-very DISAPPPOINTED in asia de cuba."

Overall Rating 4.0 out of 5 (Very Good)
"Excellent food and plenty of it. Fun place for large groups w/enough food for all to get a taste. Service is friendly and professional from the hostess, the bartenders and waiters. Large drinks that won't break the bank. Decently priced wine list. The best part is now that it's not the "in place" anymore its much easier to get a table. If you haven't been here in a while give it a try."

Review 43 for Asia de Cuba - New York

Overall Rating 2.0 out of 5 (Fair)
"I met friends for lunch here during one of winter restaurant weeks promo periods. The food was okay to good but nothing exceptional. Salmon was on the dry side, rice was flavorless, the chicken unexciting. The side dishes that you are encouraged to include with your meal are very over priced. Service was good. I'm beginning to feel restaurant week is for suckers or hopeless dreamers."

Review 46 for Asia de Cuba - New York

Overall Rating 3.0 out of 5 (Good)
"the restaurant week menu was nothing to write home about. however i did leave there very full. them trying to charge you an extra $10 per person for lamb was absurd, because in the end the lamb was ok. the best part of the meal was the sorbet. the service was good (we were there when they were trying to close down). i was told after dinning here that they are known for their sea food. i mean they must be doing something right to still be in business and charge that amount of money for the food. i hope you have a better dining experience than i did. if not at least you can say you went. good luck!"

Review 51 for Asia de Cuba - New York

Overall Rating 3.0 out of 5 (Good)
"I believe the food could have been "very good," but I offered a rating of "good." Since there were two of us there for dinner during restaurant week and Asia de Cuba's entrees are meant for sharing, we ordered two appetizers and one entree. Unfortunately, we did not like our entree, although it had a nice flavor and presentation.

We ordered the "Honey-Rhum Glazed Pot Roast Of Pork" which was served on a bed of sauteed bok choy. It was mostly fat and not enough meat! For us, that meant scraping through fatty gelatin to get to the substance of the meat and scooping up greasy bok choy that was sitting in the pork gravy. Again, the flavor and presentation was very good, but the tactile experience of all that fat was off-putting.

Overall Rating 4.0 out of 5 (Very Good)
"Asia de Cuba is my favorite restaurant in the area for lunch. I brought my three women colleagues/friends here last Friday, although very busy due to restaurant week, we were promptly seated as soon as we arrived. Our waiter was friendly and service was great. We enjoyed the calamari salad, beef dumplings, cuban chicken and pork were really delicious. We were so excited to bring back to work our desserts, the coconut cake was to die for . . . really try it. We were given $25 gifts certificates each, another good reason to go back soon. I can't count how many times I've been here, it has not disappoint me one bit . . . We LOVED THE FOOD!!!!"

Overall Rating 5.0 out of 5 (Outstanding)
"Went to Asia de Cuba for the first time during restaurant week and I was not disappointed. It's a good place for a date or just a dinner with friends. The bar was packed and even though it was close to the seating area it wasn't distracting. The food was amazing. We were given the choice of 2 appetizers, 1 entree and 1 dessert. The appetizers (a salad and beef dumplings) were full of flavor and then for the entree we ordered the Cuban BBQ Chicken, which was delicious! We were nervous about there not being enough food, but we ended up having some left over. We even had a great experience with the waiters who were all very attentive. I will definitely be going back!"

Overall Rating 1.0 out of 5 (Poor)
"Too crowded and stuck up! We had a 7:45pm reservation and were not seated until close to 8:30pm. The upstairs bar was packed and half of it was roped off for a private party.

The crowd was pretentious and rude. The staff was overwhelmed by too many people.

Will not go back!

Since each starter is about 25$ in the regular menu, the 24$ lunch is a great catch!

"I had been to Asia de Cuba a few times for dinner, but not for lunch. It was very good all around. More than enough food. We ordered our 2 appetizers and one came with a $10 additional fee. When the check arrived, we were charged $10 each additional charge. I didn't say anything, but it seemed unclear on the menu. $20 extra dollars for scallops? "Went to Asia De Cuba as part of restaurant week. Great ambiance and the food overall was good. The beef wontons had a little heat to them which was a nice touch. Their BBQ chicken entree was ok- the stickiest sticky rice I've ever had. Their chocolate cake with coffee icecream was delicious."

Review 78 for Asia de Cuba - New York

Overall Rating 5.0 out of 5 (Outstanding)
"The food inspires a feeling of simple elegance. You are familiar with what you are eating but still feel it has been elevated to a much higher culinary level. There are 2 dining levels. The 2nd level seemed to be a bit more interesting. It has a comfortable lounge and had better viewing angles to see the attractive decor and diners. The waitstaff was extremely attentive and attune to your every need. Asia de Cuba also have a gluten free menu and the waitstaff was well acquainted with gluten allergies."

Review 80 for Asia de Cuba - New York

Overall Rating 5.0 out of 5 (Outstanding)
"we were a party of four. we ordered 2 apps; calamari salad,(to die for) and beef dumplings 2 ways. then we had 2 entrees; seared tuna over wasabi mashed potatoes and short ribs, (to die for) and a side dish. the carrot cake is not like any you have ever tasted and it was quite wonderful. we went during restaurant week and found that it would cost about the same ordering off the menu minus some dessert."

Review 81 for Asia de Cuba - New York

Overall Rating 3.0 out of 5 (Good)
"We went for restaurant week which was $35 pp for 3 course meal. One appetizer, the beef dumplings, was delicious. The calamari salad seemed too simple for my liking. We shared the roast pork as a main course, and it was excellent. The pork was slow cooked and could be cut with a fork. Dessert was medicore, really nothing special, but our bill was quite pricey because they charged us $16 a drink."

Review 84 for Asia de Cuba - New York

Overall Rating 3.0 out of 5 (Good)
"One reason we chose this restaurant was the availability of a gluten free menu. After ordering and being served the platains a staff member ran over to tell us that they are fried in the same oil as everything else which means they may not be gluten free! That ruined part of the meal for our guest. Also they have price fixed menu but we had to ask for that menu, it was not offered to us. The waiter was hard to find most of the time. Great place to have drinks, small pltes and enjoy a beautiful lounge upstairs."

"My boyfriend and I ate here for the first time during restaurant week and had a great time. Review 91 for Asia de Cuba - New York

Overall Rating 4.0 out of 5 (Very Good)
"The two of us went here for Restaurant Week. We knew that there would be a different menu for the discounted price, but we weren't ready for such a paired-down selection. Our waiter (whom was pretty odd) did his best to help us choose a varied dinner. We never felt rushed or forgotten, but we were a bit put off by our waiter. The food was flavorful, fresh, and interesting. We were not as pleased with our entree - the Pork Pot Roast. Being that it was a pork belly, the meat was pretty fatty; it definitely had a lot of flavor, though. The Thai Salad was pretty nice."

"OK, I did enjoy my dinner. However, I awoke with stomach discomfort and had the runs for a good part of the next day. I don't think it was the food. "Pretty place, but tables were way too close together upstairs. Portions were abundant and tasty, but the service was just adequate. Food came way too fast, felt a little bit like a chinese restaurant. Looks like it would be a fun place to have a party att he long table in the center downstairs, but that was empty so the ambiance was lacking. Don't think I'll go back despite the good food."

"My friend and I went for Restaurant Week, and wasn't that impressed. We were seated in the hallway in the midst of the hustle and bustle of the waiters, uncomfortable chairs, and mediocre service. We had the 2 way beef dumpling and chicken on skewers - both were good, but not to die for that I'd order them again. We had to share the main course and dessert, and we got the pork with bok choy (too salty) and coconut cake, which was probably the best part of the meal. Overall, not impressed."

Overall Rating 4.0 out of 5 (Very Good)
"This is one of my favorites in NYC but as always the waiters and busboys apparently do not understand what a refill is. Are water and ice tea glasses were never refilled unless we asked for them to be. We ate lunch here and there were only around 5 tables in the entire restaurant - busboys and waiters seem to just keep walking around and around the long table in the middle yet they didn't bother to refill empty glasses. I brought this up with the manager. I live in Dallas and travel to NYC only once a year for 4 or 5 days and we always make this restaurant one of our picks yet I'm always amazed that each and every year it's the same issue at this restaurant - THEY DON'T UNDERSTAND THAT THEY'RE SUPPOSED TO REFILL THE WATER GLASSES!!"

"A hidden gem in Midtown East that offers an option to the stamped out steak places. Grat food, good service, a nicely interesting wine list. A bit on the noisy side for a business meal, but the staff turned down the volume a bit, which made it fine. Will return and look forward to it."

Review 110 for Asia de Cuba - New York

Overall Rating 4.0 out of 5 (Very Good)
"It was great. We loved it. Our table was one of the round ones and it made a great sight/seeing spot. The food was very good. We had teh 38$ prefix menu for the 4 of us. Not only did my husband and I like it *we live in NYC* but also my brother and his wife who were visiting from Spain. The service was great also. The Mango-margarita cocktail was nothing special though, wouldn't recommend it. The champagne cocktails was good though."

Review 112 for Asia de Cuba - New York

Overall Rating 5.0 out of 5 (Outstanding)
"I wrote a note to the restaurant when I made the reservation letting them know that this was a special evening for us. We were traveling to NYC to celebrate my wife's 50th birthday. They gave us a very special table with a curved bench (designed for a much larger party) and treated us to a wonderful evening of service, food and made us feel very special. They topped off the evening with a dessert (compliments of the restaurant) with happy birthday written on the plate in chocolate. As we left, even the folks at the front desk were aware of our special evening and quietly wished Kathy a Happy Birthday. Asia de Cuba pays intention to detail in every way and gave us one of our most memorable dining experiences ever."

Review 120 for Asia de Cuba - New York

Overall Rating 4.0 out of 5 (Very Good)
"Our experience at Asia de Cuba was very pleasant. My wife and I decided to spend the evening on the upper level for drinks and dinner. The view was outstanding as was the service pervided by our waiter. The menu provided a variety of appetizes as well as main courses. Each course was timed perfectly providing time to engage in conversation and rest a bit. Our only issue with our dinning experience was that we both felt that our food did not come to the table hot. We both felt that it was due to our table being located up stairs, and the time it took to get to us. My recommendation would be to tell patrons to sit downstairs."

Review 125 for Asia de Cuba - New York

Overall Rating 5.0 out of 5 (Outstanding)
"We had a great time for dinner. The ambiance made it seem like we were going to another place, with lighting and curtians. The servers were very attentive, from start to finish. A sharing menu is a great idea, and the prix fix allowed us to sample a few items we wanted. The portion sizes were very reasonable for the price, and the food was freshly cooked with inventive and savory flavors. The only minus is that it's a little hard to find from the outside, if you're not really looking."

"As always the food and ambiance was great...but i thought that this time the staff didn't had their act together. Review 136 for Asia de Cuba - New York

Overall Rating 1.0 out of 5 (Poor)
"Grossly overpriced -- the menu looks fancy but the food is nothing above what you'd get at a middling hotel in a small city. The final insult was a slice of cake for dessert that was absolute cardboard, much worse than you'd get in an average diner. We couldn't imagine what self-respecting chef would allow such garbage to be served in his kitchen."

"Perhaps not as "hot" as it once was when first opening 12 years ago, but we were there on a Sunday night so it was a little quieter. Food was inventive and delicious. Service was excellent, just what you would expect in NYC and the decor is inviting and comfortable. Really, one of the best meals we have had in a long time. Nice to see that this asian/cuban fusion still has it."

Review 139 for Asia de Cuba - New York

Overall Rating 3.0 out of 5 (Good)
"My wife and I went to Asia de Cuba on a Saturday night after a matinee. We arrived early and had no problem finding a seat in the upstairs lounge to have a cocktail before our reservation. We were seated promptly and ordered the tasting menu to get an idea of the restaurant's flavors. I can say that everything was good, but nothing was outstanding. For instance, the cod was quite tasty and buttery, but the edamame that came with it was bland while the beef spring roll could have been seasoned better, but had a tasty, good black bean salad that came with it. My favorite part of the meal was dessert, which was a pineapple cheesecake with passionfruit while my wife liked the Amuse Brioche (sp?), a dumpling with salmon and something else."

Review 144 for Asia de Cuba - New York

Overall Rating 3.0 out of 5 (Good)
"While the appetizers were excellent and the portions were well sized, the staff was either right on top of us or non-existant. This was my second visit to Asia de Cuba, and while I would return for the food (although the lamb entree is not something I would order again) the service definitely subtracted from my experience and like most places in Manhattan, it doesn't completely justify the pricing.

Bring your friends, grab a bunch of appetizers, but don't expect a great service experience.

Review 147 for Asia de Cuba - New York

Overall Rating 4.0 out of 5 (Very Good)
"Food and service was great. The black cod was exceptional.

The staff manning the reception desk were a bit disorganised- a number of people were complaining about the time taken to be seated.

Review 148 for Asia de Cuba - New York

Overall Rating 5.0 out of 5 (Outstanding)
"We were entertaining friends from outside of the city over the weekend. We had a moderate size group (7 people) looking for an elegant place to eat. The whole table ordered the tasting menu which hit the highlights of the menu. All of the food was absolutely delicious. Additionally, the cocktail selection kept all our guests happy. Finish it off with a trio of marvelous deserts, to make a wonderful dinner."

Review 149 for Asia de Cuba - New York

Overall Rating 5.0 out of 5 (Outstanding)
"Asia de Cuba is the perfect place to take your date for drinks and appetizers at the 2nd floor bar overlooking the main dinning area, or fine dinning on the first floor. I had 10:30pm reservations and showed up 15 minutes early with my date. Normally I would have had to wait around in a crowed lobby, but at Asia de Cuba they have you wait at the bar and find you when your table is ready. The food was exceptional. I must warn the $38 pre fixe menu for 2 guests is 2 appetizers,1 entree, and 1 desert but all the food is ment to be shared. I was weary at first that such little food would suffice my appetite, but I was completely satisfied right to the last bite of desert. Full but not to full. Overall great place to have a good time in style."

Review 154 for Asia de Cuba - New York

Overall Rating 5.0 out of 5 (Outstanding)
"This restaurant was recommended to me just before arriving for our short stay in New York but luckily we managed to reserve a table. Our dining experience at Asia de Cuba was an unforgettable one and quite possibly the best restaurant we visited. One thing that made our visit even more special was Randy, our waiter, who's recommendations on wine, cocktails and food were excellent and his character and sense of humor just added to our very memorable evening. Excellent food, excellent service and a restaurant that I will be going back to on my next visit to New York!"

"Yes, our reservation was early, but the place was pretty empty.
The service was aggressively indifferent.

Thank goodness the kitchen produces magic. I can get ignored lots of better places.

"Great ambiance and very stylish interior. Food (huge portions!) and cocktails were great. Service generally great but let down by confusion over charging us full price on cocktails when it should've been happy hour prices!! Great place though!"

Review 159 for Asia de Cuba - New York

Overall Rating 4.0 out of 5 (Very Good)
"Don't go to see the "holographic waterfall", it's just a picture, but do go for the scene and the food. The place is very trendy and well laid out, but a bit noisy when full. Fortunately for us we were seated at a table for two that was off to the side and were able to share a romantic meal. The tuna tartar, braised beef ribs and shanghai noodles were out of this world. We weren't as impressed with the crab croquettes, but they were good, just not great. Two appetizers, an entree and a side are more than enough for two and we like our portions large. The wine list is reasonable with a good range of wines, but not extensive. We liked it better than China Grill! Note to chef - do a cookbook, it will be a best seller."

Review 160 for Asia de Cuba - New York

Overall Rating 3.0 out of 5 (Good)
"It was a Sunday night therefore the restaurant was not packed...the temperature outside wasnt too cold so I guess they had the AC on I felt the restaurant was a bit cold. The waiter recommended 2 entrees and 1 appetizer for 2 people because the portions were to suppose to be shared. I agree with 2 entrees and share them to get different flavors before the main course but If I decide to go back I would definitely have 2 appetizers not to share. The portion of the appetizer was a normal portion for 1 person. The drinks were good. We had the duck for entree and we both agree it was a little chewy but good in flavor so overall it was just OK..."

"The food was great. We had a theater commitment and our server did his best to get us out in time to take a casual walk to the theater. The bar was very nice, overlooking the dining area. A little pricey, but we knew that going in. In all, we were pleased with the experience."
