Tru is a Mobil four star and AAA five diamond restaurant that has received four-star reviews from Chicago Tribune, Chicago Sun-Times and Chicago Magazine. Accolades from the James Beard House include Best New restaurant nomination in 2000 and Outstanding Service Award in 2006. Tru also has been honored with the Wine Spectator Grand Award since 2004 and with one star in the Michelin guide since 2010.
We are an adult environment with a dress code policy: jackets are required for gentleman and elegant-casual, business or evening attire for ladies.

"I last ate at Tru when Tramonto-Gand were in charge. I was not so impressed. But Gale's desserts were terrific. Service was indifferent. Now everything is turned around. We ordered eight courses (seven and a morel custard), and five were terrific. The scallop crudo was divine as was the salmon in ginger broth. The Waygu beef was boring; beef courses often are. The problem were the two desserts (a dry pistachio cake and English peas and strawberries) were mediocre at best; the peas were unpleasant. Anthony Martin is a terrific progressive and restrained modernist chef, but whoever is doing the desserts need to rethink them. Service was cheery and professional, but we worried about being up-sold - on the caviar, the cheese, and tea (twice)."

"My wife and I had dinner here last evening, she is not big on tasting menus so I had to twist her arm a little. She also doesn't like salmon or carrots. The menu included both. Harrington our waiter and the kitchen were most accomodating substituing courses she liked. The 7 plus 1 course tasting menu was delightful and the wine list extensive. We had to forgo the last two courses (dessert) as we were quite full but they packaged them for us to take away. All in all a terrific dinner. Expensive but hightly recommended."

"Our group of six had an amazing experience this Saturday. We like to show our California friends that the Midwest is not just a "flyover" zone, and places like Tru really do the job. The wine list was extensive, the sommalier knowledgeable, and the presentation of each course was a delight. As an art fan, I enjoyed the contemporary decor. The attention to detail -- synchronized pouring of drinks, purse ottomans, and customized menu -- are unmatched. It was a thoroughly enjoyable evening and I look forward to another visit. Just beware: the bill is not for the weak of heart! (But it's worth it!)"

"Unfortunately TRU now only offers a tasting menu which is more pomp than substance, with some elements of stuffiness. A few years ago I had one of the best meals ever here, but I'm not a fan of the ultra-tiny, meted out portions with nothing on the table but drinks in between, despite the enjoyable coordinated service with a flourish."

"So disappointing.We have been to Tru several times in the past and had fabulous experiences.Since our last visit,they have changed the menu format.Previously, you could select from either an a la carte menu OR a chef's tasting menu. Now, the only selection you can make is the full tasting menu or an abbreviated one.You pay the same,but the abbreviated one has larger portions.You also can't choose the items you want on the abbreviated menu,that has also been pre-selected. We were celebrating our 18 year old's birthday and despite my skepticism upon seeing the change,he wanted to try it. Not only did he leave his birthday dinner hungry,but my husband and I tried everything and were left horribly unimpressed. Sad to say we won't be going back."

"Definitely a memorable dining experience... but I TRUly don't believe it was worth the cost. I've got no problem spending lots of money on great things, even on a single meal, but TRU's ambiance, aesthetic appeal and the overall conduct of our servers seemed very underwhelming for such an "extravagant" and expensive restaurant. My expectations were certainly high, and I'd love to go on and on as to why our experience wasn't up to par, but this website will cut me off before I can finish... so I'll just leave it at that."

"I was planning on going to L2O an the beginning and then found this restaurant rated higher on zagat. Food was reasonably good but nothing super exciting. With a restaurant with this type of menu and rating I would expect a bit more. The seating does not provide good privacy and the restaurant overall is a little loud.

"We were not satiesfied with the food, we had the 13 course tasting meny, the desciption of each course did not live up to what each dish actually tastet like, the dishes were generally blend and it was difficult to separate the flavours, it was a little bit that they "overdo" everything. "The food was just phenomenal. I am surprised it doesn't have at least one more michelin star. We eat at Alinea regularly and while the molecular gastronomy 'surprises' are not there - everything about the food, the ingredients, the melding of unique flavors, the stunning presentation - there was nothing left to be desired. It was gastronomical perfection. We had been to Tru 3 years ago and were underwhelmed - this time it was like we were at a whole new 3 Michelin star restaurant. Can't wait to go back."

"Tru has some innovative ways of serving food - sorbet in an apple, chocolate truffle on dry ice, etc. Of the 5 courses I had, my favorite was the salmon poached in miso & ginger and the beef dish. The carrot soup was disappointing - such a tiny serving and served cold so you didn't really taste it. Cheese tray serving size was ridiculously small. Service was good, but a little up-tight. I appreciated the nice birthday tribute and the sweet treat that was a giveaway at the end of the meal. I compared Tru's tasting menu to one's I've experienced at SuSur's restaurant in Toronto and one in my little town of Bloomington, IL (Station 220) and that's why I was not as impressed."

"TRU is possibly the best restaurant in Chicago with wonderfully prepared and served food, an excellent wine list and a quiet, sophisticated yet modern ambiance. The menu is structured as a tasting experience but you can abbreviate it and have only seven courses--don't worry, each plate is small but enough to reveal the creativity and talent of the chef. Wine pairings are offered if you prefer (although you should at least read the wine list!) and extras such as caviar and cheese can be added. It is not cheap but it is a TRU-ly wonderful experience and I can't wait to return."

"We ate here based on a couple of web searches indicating TRU is one of the best Chicago restaurants for fine dining. We knew it was expensive and we were not surprised by their prices. That said, we found it to be pretentious and most of the food average. It seemed we were paying for highly choreographed service more than anything else. Have three great meals for the same price somewhere else."

"This was an excellent evening. We were celebrating two birthdays. The food was delicious, we didn't feel rushed. The wait staff was, and has always been professional but friendly. I have food allergies and they were noted from previous dinners."

"What a dining experience! Food, ambiance, service were all outstanding. From the moment you pull up for the valet parking until they return your car to you, everything is just perfect. Food is so creative and has so many unusual tastes and textures to be experienced. One of us had the small tasting menu and the other had the full tasting. This allowed us to sample everything and we were very happy with that combination. The vibe is elegant without being pretentious. Service is attentive without being overbearing. I felt like I was being welcomed into someone's home. Love the purse ottoman!"

"It's quite an experience. 14 tasting courses with wine pairings requires 2.5 hours and $273 per person , not counting tip and tax. Food is truly delicious and exotic. The room is minimalist in decor, which is all part of the Tru concept. I'll not likely return but I'll not forget this either"

"So far in the new year we have visited 2-Michelin star Graham Elliot and L2O. This week we visited 1-star TRU. We are hard pressed to understand why TRU is rated any less highly than the other 2 outstanding restaurants. The service and ambience are outstanding. Each dish on the tasting menu is a perfect bite, presented beautifully and on creative, fun serving pieces. This is not a restaurant for a casual meal but for an evening-long dining experience. If you love fine dining and great wine pairings, don't miss TRU."

"I do like the tastings option; however, unlike most experiences where you finish a tastings menu and you're full and had a lot of different tastes, I felt like this was heavy on the fish, a little rushed, and when we got home, my fiance had to make a sandwich. While I understand that a tasting menu isn't going to have huge portions, I'd say that at least two courses were not worth trying."

"Our severs were wonderful and accommodating. Food presentations were unique and special. Non alcoholic drinks were the best that I have ever experienced and for a moment there I had a buzz. "My husband and I went to TRU for a special night out. We were not prepared for just how upscale this restaurant was. The service was unique - very over the top. We are easy to please, but we will not be back nor would we recommend this restaurant to friends. My plate broke while I was cutting a meat portion in half, which (I guess) can happen, but the server came over and asked me to pick up the shards of glass and hand it to him. This didn't make sense considering the level of detail regarding the service at this restaurant. I was then treated as if I had intentionally caused the plate to shatter, which I hadn't. I expected a portion of the meal to be discounted, but nothing was deducted. Sadly, it was overpriced and we were disappointed."

"Tru is in a transition phase as they are attempting to turn an already stellar product into something even better. Gone is the three course prix fixe option and bread service in favor of two tasting "experiences" (seven courses for $115 or thirteen for $158). There are bread pairings for a few courses. The food is outstanding (though portions quite small) with beautiful presentations. Nice elegant and romantic ambiance though the dining room is just a tad old fashioned. Service at Tru is first rate; everybody is extremely attentive and polished, yet warm. Dining at Tru is a luxurious experience; while they need to do a bit of tweaking during this transition they have the potential to ascend into a truly mind blowing culinary journey."

"My husband and I were in Chicago for a few days. While he was at a business dinner, I had a great dinner with a girlfriend. The next night was Valentine's Day and we almost opted for a cozy room service evening. Going to Tru was the best decision that we ended up making 45 minutes before our reservation. To think we could have missed this evening makes us shake our heads. We had the most absolutely perfect and romantic evening. Three and half hours flew by so quickly. Yes, we've been to Paris, London, Italy, New York, New Orleans and our own Bay Area and more. Tru is solidly on the favorite list now.
