Commerce, nestled in the heart of Greenwich Village, is an homage to old New York. The historic space that formerly housed the beloved Grange Hall has been restored by artisan craftsmen. The interior features murals by artist David Joel, restored chestnut booths & a stunning art deco Brunswick bar circa 1941. Owned by Tony Zazula—a founder of Montrachet—& Chef Harold Moore, Commerce presents a contemporary American menu combining global flavors & classic ingredients such as oysters, chicken & steak. Formerly the Executive Chef of Montrachet & Chef de Cuisine of March, Chef Moore brings years of experience working in New York City’s top kitchens, such as Daniel, Jean Georges, & Mercer Kitchen. Moore’s menu is casual yet sophisticated & belies the complex construction of flavors & textures that are telling of his extensive training.

"I had heard rave reviews about Commerce for years and I just had to try it finally. The chicken was everything people said about it and more - really amazing but everything else was pretty mediocre, including the service. They forgot part of our order and all of the other dishes we got were just ok. For a family of pasta aficionados, this pasta was close to not edible.
I am definitely going back to Commerce for the chicken and in the hopes of a better overall meal but don't get your hopes too high."

"The restaurant was very crowded, the food was average and service fair to good. Unfortunately they seated up one hour and fifteen minutes after our reservation, so we were not at al pleased despite them agreeing to pay for a round of drinks to make up for the delay."

"Based on reviews, we were very excited to try the pot-au-pho-- the beef was cooked perfectly, however, it lacked seasoning- very tender, but was missing heat or flavor. This may be a great dish for someone else but it skipped a beat with us. Bartender was great- makes rad drinks."

"It's just about as lovely a location as you can find in NYC for a restaurant and the interior and ambiance matches the location. It's a bit cramped inside. We were 5 people at a 4 person table and we were not the only ones. Tables are very close together. Service people were very pleasant though a touch slow. Overall, I give it a strong recommendation."

"Great meals with excellent service in beautiful old guild hall on quiet Greenwich Village street. Sommelier was helpful with useful description of choices. Waitress with the discrete tattoo of Texas on her wrist also provided excellent ordering help. Had excellent Sancerre rouge. Special appetizer of soft shell crab, buratta, and chili remoulade was fantastic. Korean-inspired Berkshire pork chop with kim chi sauce and apples was also superb. Passed on dessert but, as they passed by, they looked fantastic, particularly "The Greatest Coconut Cake." Definitely going back."

"This is the only 1-star review I have ever given. Despite the good food, I feel obligated to give Commerce only one star due to the egregious wait times. I came here for dinner in Dec. and was told there would be a short wait but ended up waiting almost an hour to be seated. I came back Sat night and was told it would be a short wait and I reminded them about last time and politely asked if this would be the case again. The hostess rudely corrected me and said that it would be shorter this time. We ended up waiting over 45 mins again. Hostess was incredibly obnoxious and there was no apology from anyone; they do not care about their customers. in a city with many great restaurants with better service, i highly recommend going elsewhere"

"I was looking forward to trying this restaurant but we were EXTREMELY disappointed from the time we walked in as the hostess Mary gave nothing but attitude. Our booking was made for 8.45 but we got the table at 9.40 only!!! and no apologies were even made about it from anyone at the restaurant. We were very simply and rudely told that many people had arrived late for their reservation due to the rain and we would just have to wait out turn, EVEN though we were there on time!!!!! The place was extremely noisy, packed like sardines. The redeeming factors were that the food was good, the waiter & bar tender were efficient but our experience was ruined from the moment we walked in... THANK YOU MARY FOR THAT."

"Started with Sweet Potato Tortelloni. It was exceptional. Had meatballs w/ polenta for my entree. Very mediocre. Service was rushed. The glass pours and cocktail list were also nothing special. Go here for the atmosphere, and maybe the pastas."

"The noise level here was beyond distracting...music was pitched at such a high level that voices were raised just to go above it, making even a half empty restaurant seem very loud. Service was poor and it took a half hour for our food to come out, even thigh we were seated early enough before the restaurant filled up...wait staff should have been keeping us up to date on the status of our orders but they had to be chased down twice for us to ask. The food and wine list are very good but this is not the place to go for quiet conversation and efficient service."

"Perfect spot for pre-theater drinks and after-theater supper (the Cherry Lane is right next door), with excellent food and attentive service. Everyone at Commerce is committed to patrons' happiness. The spaghetti carbonara sadly had a squiggly non-spaghetti pasta, but the pork schnitzel was a delight. The place was packed before the show (the Negroni was perfectly made) and they seated everyone in one section for after-theater, so it always feels like a going concern. The noise level can get a bit out of hand (we had a table of six screamers next to us), but everyone is clearly having a great time."

"An absolute gem nestled in a quaint neighborhood. Great spot for romantic dinners and special nights out. Great food, unique entrees. My boyfriend and I celebrated our anniversary there while in the city for a long weekend. The deviled eggs and banana cream pie were epic!! Prices average for NYC. Close to the subway! Highly recommended!"

"Having enjoyed Commerce many times, Saturday night was the last straw. Deafening noise prevented us from carrying on any semblance of a conversation. The food is good, but not so good that you just want to sit, mute, eating your meal in silence while a jet engine roars overhead. There are plenty of other enjoyable, and quieter, restaurants in the Village. Service was okay."

"Although OpenTable has a $$ for this restaurant, I have to agree with other reviewers that it's more like a $$$. I went for brunch and eventhough the main courses were mostly in the upper teens, you're paying those prices for breakfast food. I ordered the baked eggs over spinach. It was amazing! I'd go back for it very frequently if I lived in the hood and if it was $5 cheaper. Also, if you like drinking brunches, be ready to either leave sober or burn a great big hole in your wallet. Besides beer, I don't recall an alcoholic drink under $10, with most in the mid teens. Despite the prices, I would definitely go to Commerce again, just not very frequently."

"The food was very good, and had lots of great sounding menu options to choose from making it hard to pick. Lots of great meat options like pork schnitzel, veal meatballs on polenta, duck, steak....all sounding delicious. Whatever we had was great! The chocolate chip cookies are simply amazing! The 2nd best I've ever had (after Levain bakery's epic cookies).
The service however was incredibly slow. Yes it was a Saturday night, but to wait 1 hour to be seated with a reservation, and then the main course coming out 45 minutes after the appetizer plates we taken away is a little too much. The waiters did keep bringing bread and water, so the slow service was not in their hands, but most likely the place was over booked and had a slow kitchen."

"The location is quaint and dining room decor well handled. The menu is thoughtful, preparation and presentation excellent. Not overwrought, just smart and well done. The staff are really top notch and personable. Our wine steward was very helpful in making a wise selection from among many good and decently priced options on the list. It worked perfect before The Cherry Lane Theatre, next door."

"The food was great, and the service was good. But the overall experience was disappointing. The restaurant is too tightly packed. You are basically sitting in other people's laps and it was so loud we couldn't hear what anyone else at our table was saying. This was meant to be a celebratory dinner but we couldn't even hear each other say congratulations."

"The food itself was delicious and we would return simply for the food. The service wasn't necessarily bad, it was just strange/inconsistent. It took us 30-45 minutes to be seated for our reservation. The staff was friendly and attentive, but the kitchen refused to make any substitution to the menu, such as an egg white omelette. At one point, I ask for some bread to go with my pasta and was told that they didn't provide bread at brunch, then after asking a different waitress I receive bread. It was just a meal with odd service. The food really was delicious though. We had a much better experience coming here for dinner. I'd probably return for brunch or dinner, but will need to adjust my expectations."

"We waited almost an hour and a half to be seated, our server knocked over a glass of wine at our table, and no one replenished it. The staff were disorganized and overwhelmed. The food tasted good, but the experience was terrible. The table next to us had a similar experience. I would not go back. The bar was super crowded with other people waiting for their meals, it seemed like the entire dining room was mismanaged."

"Our reservation was for 3 people at 2:30, we were seated at 3:30 at a table for 2, our food arrived at 4, our waiter offered 2 glasses of wine for our patience and then charged us anyway. The food was tasty but salty, the staff grumpy and aloof except for the host who was very apologetic every time he said it would just be a few minutes during our hour at the bar (lucky to have those seats). The ambience was frenetic, too crowded and too loud. I've been to Commerce twice before and had a wonderful experience both times, I guess the rule of thumb is never on a holiday."

"Dinner at this restaurant is great....brunch, not so much! Stay away from the baked eggs with spinach and truffle...its more of a spinach dish than a egg dish. German pancake is pretty good and sausage is made in-house, don't think mine was cooked through! No dessert until after 4 :-/ You know what? Stick to dinner at this place , the chicken and steak are very tasty!"

"This was my fourth time eating at Commerce and one of the best experiences yet. I like to consider myself a foodie and love trying new things and unique flavor combinations, and I can always count on at least a few items on Commerce's menu that I've never had before. I was excited to try the rabbit rillette (like a pâté, the knowledgeabe waitress explained) and sweetbreads with, lima beans, asparagus, bacon and a soy glaze; neither apps disappointed. While I was sad that the kitchen had run out of the pork schnitzel (which I've had before and is both simple and delicious), the pappardelle with lamb ragu was fresh and delicious. I wish I had room at the end for the amazing coconut cake but I would've exploded all over the restaurant."

"The food here is incredible, so I'll definitely go back, but making a reservation here is playing roulette. We were a couple minutes late for our reservation, but we called to let the restaurant know we were running behind. They said "no problem" because the previous party at our table was still there. We arrived 10 min late. A full hour after our 8pm reservation, we were finally seated. In my opinion, it is the restaurant's responsibility to get us seated if we have a reservation. If I had wanted to eat at 9pm, there were plenty of other great restaurants on OpenTable with 9pm availability.
The food is fabulous, though, so if you're willing to wait at the bar (which has great drinks), you won't be upset with your dinner."

"This is my third visit to this restaurant, so obviously I like it. A friend and I went on a Monday night and it was not crowded. I know it is extremely crowded on weekends. The only comment I have is about the wine service. My friend asked for a pinot grigio. The waitress who I believe was in training and was accompanied by a waiter, poured the white wine for my friend to taste. My friend thought it was too sweet. The waiter then said that they did not have pinot grigio so this was something else. Why did he not tell her that beforehand? They served it to her without telling her what it was. This was not a cool thing for the waiter to do. He should have told her that before he just brought her something else."
