Restaurant Reviews for Elephant Walk, The - Boston

Elephant Walk, The - Boston

900 Beacon Street
Boston, MA 02215

The Elephant Walk serves Award-Winning Cambodian and French cuisine. We also feature strong VEGETARIAN and GLUTEN-FREE menus! With so much depth and breadth to our menus, both exotic and familiar, we have something for just about everyone. Cambodian cooking is beautiful and delicious, but still rare in America. Less hot and sweet than Thai, richer and more complex than Vietnamese, the complex spice pastes that are the foundation of many Cambodian dishes reflect Cambodia’s Indian ancestry. Our Cambodian menu features both traditional Cambodian dishes and originals created by our Chef/Owners Longteine and Nadsa de Monteiro, a Cambodian mother-daughter team born and raised in Phnom Penh. Why French too? Cambodia was a French colony for a century, ending in the 1950s. Consequently, our chef-owners were French-educated and grew up speaking French and enjoying French cuisine too. In other words, our Cambodian-and-French theme is an authentic reflection of…us!

"I have dined at this restaurant a few times before and have had pleasant dinners and brunches. For those times, I would have rated better. This time, my dish was not as palatable but I think I'll go back to this restaurant but will not order that same dish - Anok Royal! I would recommend this place to friends."

Review 10 for Elephant Walk, The - Boston

Overall Rating 3.0 out of 5 (Good)
"We had a birthday party of 5 adults on a Wednesday night but had to wait a full 20 minutes after being seated before a waiter arrived to even take a drink order and then almost another 10 minutes for the drinks to arrive! This is inexcusably bad service and put a damper on our festive atmosphere. Food was not as good as in past. Shredded pork appetizer more like a goulash and inappropriate as appetizer. Pork & eggplant main course was tender but rather bland and uninteresting. Great selection of interesting wines by the glass as always. Next time I'll stick to the tried and true sea bass which is always excellent."

Review 19 for Elephant Walk, The - Boston

Overall Rating 2.0 out of 5 (Fair)
"The service was mediocre-the host was on the phone when we entered and did not acknowledge us with eye contact or wave or anything else. This is usually enough to send us running out the door (if we are not acknowledged when we walk in the door, what will the service be like) If it matters, this is with a reservation.
The food was okay - I have lived near this restaurant for a number of years and had always wanted to try it.I really liked the ambiance - we were seated in the roon closest to the street (by the windows) and the space/noise level was pefect - a little bit of background music and high ceilings - we could'nt hear the conversations of the adjoining tablesI had french, my dining companion chose Cambodian - both OK but not great"

Review 21 for Elephant Walk, The - Boston

Overall Rating 4.0 out of 5 (Very Good)
"It is so refreshing to be able to go into a restaurant and see gluten-free options on the menu and to have such a wonderful range of really appetising options So often in restaurants the "gluten-free" meals are presented without any sauces or accompaniments since those are the items that contain the flour or breadcrumbs etc. However, this can make for really bland eating experiences. My haddock in creamy mushroom sauce was wonderful and I will certainly look forward to trying that again in the future. The meal size was also just right - not too massive and wasteful, not too small and insubstantial."

Review 23 for Elephant Walk, The - Boston

Overall Rating 3.0 out of 5 (Good)
"While our food was excellent and there was nothing wrong with our service at all, the noise level in the not-even-packed restaurant was so loud that we had to yell across the table to communicate and could not have a normal conversation even after several surrounding tables left. I would not return unless I was coming at an off-hour on a weekday. I would not use this restaurant for a romantic or special occasion place due to the sheer volume."

Review 24 for Elephant Walk, The - Boston

Overall Rating 3.0 out of 5 (Good)
"Dinner was OK. The descriptions were better than the tastes. The items we ordered sounded interesting but ended up being bland or simply weren't able to sustain interest past a couple of bites. The service was amiable and efficient. The wine recommendation was fine. The tables and seating were comfortable and it is an attractive restaurant. However, the lighting was low for ambience but made reading the menu difficult. They should either increase the light level or use larger and more readable fonts. It was just too difficult to decipher. We've been to The Elephant Walk some years ago...after a second not particularly interesting time, we probably won't go back again anytime soon. Just not the "ah-ha" experience that we were hoping f"

"The tasting menu at this restaurant is one of the best deals. 4 courses for $35 and you don't go home hungry! Wine menu is great, too. This was my third or fourth time a this place and the only complaint I have is that I felt like we were rushed. They brought the check with dessert and hovered until I paid. The food is top notch. I will definitely go back."

Review 31 for Elephant Walk, The - Boston

Overall Rating 3.0 out of 5 (Good)
"My date and I both had a three-course tasting menu, which came with an appetizer, 1st course, and entree (a four-course tasting menu is also available with dessert). The price was very good and the portions were just right. Unfortunately, I couldn't pronounce anything on the menu, but it was pretty easy to order by saying "the pork" or "the shrimp." The beer and wine menu had good options, as well.

The service, however, was a little odd. Our waiter was kind of creepy and tended to hover a bit (note: it was pretty dead in the restaurant as it was a late dinner on a Monday). The best part of the meal was the appetizer, and he took it away before we were finish, so I was very disappointed."

Review 34 for Elephant Walk, The - Boston

Overall Rating 4.0 out of 5 (Very Good)
"The food danced an enticing line between exotic and home. The flavors were subtle and unusual without being mad hot nor shocking. Six of us ordered everything from semi-comfort food to completely new and everyone enjoyed the meal. Even the house wines, which I never go for, were good (but not great). Definitely a place where the chef knows how to introduce and bridge cuisines. Even though the service was very stiff and business-like, the overall experience was surprising and very satisfying indeed."

"The food was great -- saturated with butter, decadent, and delicious. I loved the mushroom crepes, the croissants and the omelettes. The Mee Siem was fine. While we really enjoyed the food and were happy to lounge for a Mother's Day brunch, the service (albeit very polite and professional) was slow. We had an early reservation and there were not many people there when we ordered (were only a party of four) but it took quite a long time to be served. We had that experience before when we had our wedding brunch there, but the prices are very reasonable and we like the food, so it's worth it. It's hard to find a restaurant that doesn't jack up the prix-fixe menu on holidays, so I also like to support it!"

"Spot-on service - attentive and knowledgable but not pushy, extensive wine list, entrees well-prepared and well-presented, cooked and spiced to perfection. Recommended - whole trout w/wasabi, shrimp curry, short ribs. Big pour on after dinner port a nice surprise."

Review 39 for Elephant Walk, The - Boston

Overall Rating 4.0 out of 5 (Very Good)
"This was my first visit to The Elephant Walk and I was very happy overall. The menu was great, especially since I eat a vegan diet, and multiple menu items were vegan or veganizable. I started with a delicious chilled avocado soup and then had the Organic Tofu Amrita for my entree. The tofu dish could have used more vegetables, but the flavors were outstanding. My dining companion had a chicken and noodle dish that she was very pleased with. My only complaints are that our waiter was inattentive and when he did come by, he wasn't all that pleasant. My other complaint is of the teeny, tiny one-stall restroom that left a long line of women waiting outside of it.

I will definitely return to The Elephant Walk."

Review 43 for Elephant Walk, The - Boston

Overall Rating 4.0 out of 5 (Very Good)
"Sumptuous, healthy, delicious and engaging range of flavors to contemplate. I found Elephant Walk serving French and Cambodian dishes, traditional or influenced, with aplomb. Having an 8 year old as part of the party we found the essential childrens' menu offering both traditional and adventurous items. One of our guests enjoyed a selection of fine gluten free recipes. The staff was happy to discuss or confirm ingredients, especially those concerned with allergens. Perfect for special moments with friends or satisfy the need to stimulate your pallet. Did I mention nice cocktails and wind?"

Overall Rating 4.0 out of 5 (Very Good)
"The lighting could be better (at first we were put in a table where we couldn't even read the menu), but other than that the ambient is nice. First we ordered rolls, that were too oily, though well presented. But the special part was the main Entrée. The trout was really amazing. One of the best combination of tastes I've ever tried. I was that impressed.

I'm surely going back to eat that same trout again, and really hope the experience will be that good again!"

Review 55 for Elephant Walk, The - Boston

Overall Rating 2.0 out of 5 (Fair)
"All four of our party selected the tasting menu. Our drinks, appetizers and desserts were delicious, but two members of our party were disappointed with the Poulet à la Citronnelle. It was mediocre and tasted like it had been cooked too long, or reheated more than once. The Khar Saiko Kroeung with Shanghai Noodles was delicious, and the Porc Diplomat, was very good as well, but was not served hot.
Service was very good."

Overall Rating 4.0 out of 5 (Very Good)
"We have been to Elephant walk many times and have always come out ful-filled.
The food is amazing, the neighborhood is great, the ambiance is good.
Unfortunately this day we went, they had a big party there and the waiters were stretched. It took the waiter 30 minutes to take our order and a couple of things we ordered never made it to the table.
The manager was very kind and apologetic and I dont think I would want this incident to overshadow my likeness for the place.
I would still recommend this to anyone, especially for the food."

Overall Rating 5.0 out of 5 (Outstanding)
"Fancy place--looks like a bank from the outside. The food was very good, and both dishes that my partner and I tried were quite exotic and delicious. Definitely a place to try new food! We also ended up ridiculously full. The service was pretty good--we were really clumsy that day for some reason, but the server promptly helped us. The only complaint would be that my plate and utensil set-up overall seemed quite dusty, especially the plate. Don't know why..."

Review 60 for Elephant Walk, The - Boston

Overall Rating 4.0 out of 5 (Very Good)
"I went to the Elephant walk looking for interesting cuisine that would accommodate my pension for meat and my girlfriends vegetarian diet. I was very pleased with the section of food and enjoyed experiencing Cambodian food in both traditional and more modern preparations. My girlfriend was simply astounded by the choices she had and thoroughly enjoyed her selections. It was romantic enough to accommodate our 5 month anniversary. The only issue I had with the experience was that our waitress had to tend to a larger party and was a bit slow; it was pleasant enough to allow my girlfriend and I to talk while we waited. We left full and plan to return. My Hendrick's Martini was particularly dry and the green tea mojito was also delicious."

Review 62 for Elephant Walk, The - Boston

Overall Rating 4.0 out of 5 (Very Good)
"What a charming spot. Nice looking space and pleasant staff. We were cautious about going there Saturday evening as the menu seems rather ambitious (dishes are arranged into categories of classic Cambodian, Special Cambodian and French and then a separate menu of gluten free dishes that is culled from the rest). Then another list of evening specials. Whew.
They still had their restaurant week menu (two of the three of us went for the 3 courses for about 30 bucks) which gave us a chance to sample quite a few dishes. The stand out from the regular menu was the Salad Cambodiagn which could easily be split as an appetizer for two or three, or paired with an appetizer; I especially liked the mussels, a reasonable dinner for one."

Review 65 for Elephant Walk, The - Boston

Overall Rating 4.0 out of 5 (Very Good)
"Elephant Walk has been around for decades and they consistently hit the mark. During Restaurant Week, EW offered a 4-course or 3-course menu. I started with spring rolls with greens and a dipping sauce. Wonderful flavor. I had the fried wontons with shrimps and greens. Excellent. And I finished with the boneless shortribs with Shanghai noodles. Everything was delicious. Even though the restaurant was filled to capacity, the server was very attentive. My only criticism is that the restrooms are downstairs and that the Ladies' Room has only one stall, and the dim lighting by the sink does not illuminate the inside of the stall at all. With a seating capacity of at least 100, one stall isn't enough. Nothing can be done, I'm sure, but really!"

"I have always liked Elephant Walk and will always like it. Lots of great choices, great flavors, lovely presentation, and good food. The restaurant week menu was great with lot of choices. The service was attentive and friendly. The tables are placed in such a way that most tables have privacy and the rooms, through crowded the other night, look open and spacious. I particularly like the preparation of the tuna that is sliced, presented with two flavorful and spicy sauces and presented with pear ravioli though am always tempted by the crevette dishes (shrimp). But I have had many meals at Elephant Walk and never been disappointed."

"I did not care for this. The food was beautiful, but didn't have much flavor. The tables were so close together, you could hear other diners' conversations very clearly. There are far better places in the city at which I'd rather dine."

Review 75 for Elephant Walk, The - Boston

Overall Rating 4.0 out of 5 (Very Good)
"Our latest visit to Elephant Walk was during restaurant week, we were very pleasantly surprised. All five of us ordered from the regular menu, the food was wonderful and timely, we were not rushed and the service was very good. We order the duck pancakes to share, which we wonderful even a non duck eating enjoyed them. Definately try the cheese and garlic sausage your choice of chicken or pork. Mee Siem is a great dish to try if this is your 1st Cambodian food. It is favorful but not too exotic. Elephant Walk continues to be one of our favorites."

Overall Rating 3.0 out of 5 (Good)
"Once again the service was not so great. The waiter proceeded to blame me of the wrong order that came out when I knew 100% that I pointed and said the dish I exactly wanted. I had to call him out on it towards the end to let him know to not to do it to other customers. I was upset from this but decided to be polite instead."

Overall Rating 5.0 out of 5 (Outstanding)
"The Elephant Walk was simply excellent. Their food was delicious and original without being cliche or overdone. Everything was both simple and gourmet. The service was attentive and very upscale while the prices were very reasonable. Their 19.95 brunch menu is a steal and includes 3 courses and a mimosa and coffee."

Review 81 for Elephant Walk, The - Boston

Overall Rating 2.0 out of 5 (Fair)
"Terrible service. Must have had a cursed week with the Elephant Walk - took two separate groups from out of town there over the span of a week, and had two terrible experiences (was reluctant to go back the second time, but had a friend with celiac, and E.W. has an excellent gluten-free menu). Probably won't go back again in the near future. Food itself was ok but undistinguished."

"We've eaten at Elephant Walk a number of times before. The French dishes are fine, the Cambodian ones very good and very interesting. They do both traditional Cambodian dishes and some that they've developed from the Cambodian heritage. Our gue
