AKASHA restaurant/bar/bakery features New American cuisine offering comfort food with big flavors and sustainable ingredients, for carnivores and herbivores alike. Chef/Caterer Akasha Richmond brings visionary cuisine to her own neighborhood eatery located in the historic Hull Building in downtown Culver City. Keeping the principles of sustainability in mind, the building's original steel, wood, concrete and brick arches were restored while the design materials pair with a seventies modernity to exude an inviting and lively atmosphere. The artisan bakery has both sweet and savory selections, as well as locally roasted fair trade coffee. The 20-seat bar highlights fresh juice cocktails, organic and premium spirits, beer and wine. The entire menu is available for catering or to go.

"The menu has changed from our last visit a couple months ago. Lamb sliders are replaced by Pork sliders, with the same wonderful level of success. I tried the new lamb meatballs, which were very good, but too many lentels were involved."

"The ambience is great and very open.Cocktails are on the pricey side- but delicious. The braised short ribs were good and fresh- however lacked a bit more flavor. The portions are incredibly generous! Bring your appetite! I would return however try something different. The sweet potato fries are as must."

"The waitress had a bad attitude and was rude to our party. She acted like she was doing us a favor by just coming to our table to take our order. Also, she had a very messy appearance. The busboy was accomodating and sweet though."

"I had pretty high expectations for Akasha, and I was a bit disappointed. The onion rings were really good, as advertised, but my salad, the sun choke, was rather bland (one of my fellow diners got the spinach salad, which was much better). The soups of the day that companions had were highly touted, but I found the super-thin pizza to be unexciting and not that flavorful, with a bit too much charred quality for my taste, which may be a personal preference; the pizza style I don't recall being mentioned in the menu.
Most importantly, though service began strong, it got very slow after our food stared arriving- I had to ask for water a few times, the last of which was not responded to. Not as vegetarian-friendly as I would have liked..."

"Just reading the menu prompted the Pavlovian instinct. I was glad I previewed so I could narrow my choices down (otherwise I'd taken an HOUR to chose). I had the Catfish soft tacos...wonderful. My guest had the Mac and Cheese (can you say creamy decadence?)..BUT..the appetizer we shared..grilled flatbread with garlic hummus(and some great salty olives to boot..I ate them all)..was truly the star. I'd go back just for the hummus. I also requested a recommendation on a nice cabernet (not too much tanin)..and while not inexpensive, it was not overpriced. Only ONE shortcoming, it was lunch on a Thursday and our waiter was spread too thin (he really had too many tables). I LOVED that the hostess mentioned the "note" I'd made...personal"

"We had a great experience at Akasha. That evening our child (5-yr.-old) was very tired and upset. The server and the restaurant could not have been more accommodating and gracious. They were happy to adjust the food to help cheer him up, the food came quickly, and it was delicious to all of us (even his discriminating parents). If bringing children, I'd recommend going early, since it's really a pretty sophisticated restaurant, not officially "kid friendly." They just happen to be very helpful, too!"

"I must say I was disappointed, partly because the first time I went to Akasha last year, the experience was perfect. The mushroom pizza was a little bland and the cauliflower overspiced. I gave them a much higher rating last time. I'm hoping the next time I go, I'll be able to do so again."

"As usual, Akasha, did NOT let us down. We went for my husband's belated birthday dinner and he could not have been MORE pleased. Our server was attentive but not overbearing. The food came at a liesurely pace....and we even had room for dessert. We will be back.

"I heard about this place on The Best Thing I Ever Ate, Crunchy. They raved about the onion rings so I went to try. It was just okay. Place was nice, food was okay. But it wasn't anything to rave about. The pot roast was tender. My octopus salad was good, but I have had better. PB ice cream was good though. Don't think I'll be going back."

"I've eaten here many many times although never had to wait almost an hour for our meals to be served. It was busy and just as we were wondering what the heck was going on, the 'new' manager came to the dinner to apologize. It was almost embarrasing as it was my birthday dinner with my parents who rarely visit. Great food regardless but there was definitely something off that night...I will return because the food quality surpasses the one time service glitch. Our waiter is a swell guy who knows the menu well and offered great advice, and even suggested the onion rings which made it on the food network the night before!"

"Had a horrendous experience. Food took forever to come out(about 45 minutes), without indication by the waitress that this was of concern, indicating that this was a normal occurrence. When it did, the food was inedible. Having limited time due to a theater curtain, we were concerned that any replacement meal would arrive on time. They assured us it would, however this didn't happen either and we had to leave without eating.

"We appreciate the organic local grown philosophy. Great lamb meatballs. Some of the food was too rich - the jidori chicken (tasty) but the sauce had too many competing flavors. The mushroom pizza had a bit too much concentrated strong flavors. Very nice waitress. A bit too noisy of a place---the music competed for attention and made it a little hard to hear the conversation."

"Food was excellent but the service was distracted. I was left thirsty and I easily would have bought another round of drinks and coffee if the wait staff would have been paying attention. Also, after 1 hr, 45 minutes, we were asked to vacate the table for the next reservation(!) I know it was busy (especially for a Thursday night) but I have never been asked to hurry up and leave. The food was prepared well and was tasty - my compliments to the chef but my criticism to the wait staff and hostess."

"Went for the DineLA meal. Nice space, but quite loud. Food was promising, but a few wrong notes: bland braised shortribs with undercooked potatoes, and heavily charred toast with my beluga lentil stew. Pork sliders (app) were great and flourless pistachio torte was wonderful.

Service was disappointing. Waited 5 minutes for anyone to acknowledge us at the front door. The waitress was nice and somewhat attentive, however, when I asked the busboy for a new tea cup (ours had lipstick) he said "your server will take care of that" and walked away. Another busser quickly removed my plate before I was finished, without asking.

A lot of potential, but not sure I'll return. I've read similar reviews of poor service. Too bad."

"I went there with my girlfriends for my birthday. I loved this restaurant. The food was wonderful. The dessert and drinks were amazing. The only thing that was bad was our waitress. She charged my friends card twice and then didn't even apoligize. She would diappear for a while, so we had to wait longer than we should have. They also got one of my friends order wrong, so we had to wait an extra 15 min. while she was waiting for her food. Other than that, the food was wonderful."

"The small plates looked so good that we ordered 5 plates to share among 3 people, then also shared a pizza and the short ribs with sweet potato fries. We ate every last bit of food. The seasonal persimmon salad was delicious, the mac & cheese was among the best I've had out, the lamb sliders were my husband's favorite - reminiscent of Father's Office burgers - the grilled shrimp was quite tasty and fresh, and the salt cod fritters were surprisingly light for a fried fritter. We enjoyed the thin crust pizza, the sweet potato fries were standard LA fare, and the short ribs fell a little short of the high standard the rest of the food had set. We had a lovely dinner with lovely service and will go back, especially for the small plates!"

"Akasha Richmond never disappoints! We usually have Christmas Eve dinner at home with friends and family but this year decided to attend the special menu at Akasha. This decision was due, in part, to having read a recent publication about factory farming and the importance of sourcing your food. At Akasha, the food is locally-grown and comes from local farms. Akasha Richmond is a brilliant chef whose famous pairings (we added the wine tasting for $30) result in dining experiences that are sublime. Everything from the striped bass, to the duck confit to the stunning dessert buffet was first rate and worthy of such a special occasion."

"We went although most of the reviews were mixed, at best, to enjoy the latkes and vodka special for chanukah and to support a clever idea. The latkes were delicious (we had ours with lox), but the drink I ordered at the same time was not served, until we reminded our waiter as our latke plates were being cleared. My husband ordered a chicken meal, and I ordered a side, at the same time as the original order. As our latka plates were being cleared, he inquired about dessert. We asked for the rest of our ordered food, and realized that he had failed to turn in that order. Thus, the entire experience was lessened by the poor service, and we were not offered any compensation."

"This was our first time visiting Akasha and the service was the worst part of the visit. Sally/e failed to mention a comparable drink when the drink I ordered was out, she also let the entrees arrive without proper utensils. Also I ordered an appetizer, but the wrong appetizer was brought out; we asked Sally/e about this and she said that we received what we had ordered. However, she confirmed the original choice when it was ordered. I assume she forgot our order. The chairs are awkward, which the couple next to us (who claimed to be regulars) commented on. The food was good, not great because they were warmish and sat waiting until we had knives. The decor of the restaurant is interesting and modern."

"Restaurant was beautiful, lively and busy. Great wine list. The burgers were okay as far a high end burgers go. The meat was great quality, but not as tasty. Maybe if they had a sauce or a stronger cheese. Loved the pickle. I gobbled it up in 2 bites. Had the apple tart for dessert, which was a let down. It was dry and the vanilla ice cream scoop on the side was tiny. I kept eye-ing the banana pudding over at the next table, which looked delicious. I'd definitely come again, but try something else. "Wonderful find! We enjoyed the fresh, locally sourced organic produce. Choose a "small plate" and a "large plate" from the interesting menu and share or keep all to yourself! Service was friendly and informative. Great bar area for grabbing a glass of wine before dinner, or just to enjoy the atmoshere. Our only complaint is that tables of two are placed along a "bench row" type seating area. This places you very close to the next table which can impose on a romantic or intimate dinner. Perhaps request a more private table for two when making a reservation?"

"granted this was for thanksgiving, but akasha took a big downgrade in my book after this last visit. the dinner was disorganized, my dish came out cold, I asked for extra veggies (since i wasnt having tofu), even called ahead to request and they brought me two brussel sprouts and cranberry relish the size of a quarter. I am almost positive my chestnut was cooked with or around animal fat, Pie bar was almost out of everything by the time we got to it, and they wouldn't serve me vegan gelato but served it to another... sad that it wasn't better. They didnt even have bread for vegans ANYWHERE in the restaurant and we had to beg for water. Again, it was a holiday, so I am sure they were overwhelmed, but I was so excited and expected more"

"We were seated right away which was nice and they gave us a table that we requested. It took awhile for anyone to come to our table with bread or water. We asked the waiter if we should be concerned with them running out of pies and he said no, they would not run out of any of the pies so not to worry. The food was ample and good. The tofu was bad on the vegan plate. The cornbread was spicy not sweet. There was a cheddar and bacon biscuit that never came to our table. The breads were ice cold. The yams were bland. Cranberries really good. My mom asked for all white meat but got a mixture. And of course they ran out of various pies by the time we started dessert. Thought the music was inappropriate for the holiday. Like I was in a cafe."

"Terrible service. Not busy. No attention from waiter except when he was in a hurry to take the order. It took a long time for the main course to come out from the kitchen in spite of the fact that there were just a couple of tables occupied.
Overpriced. Would not return."

"We went for the 50%off all bottles of wine special offered on Wednesdays and didn't notice until we got home that they charged us the full price after all. This, after we mentioned twice to the server that we'd come especially for the wine discount as we trying to save money these days. My friend spoke with the manager today and hopefully they will credit his account for the overcharge."

"The food was really execellent but I was a little shocked to see that they added a 20% gratuity for Thanksgiving dinner for a part of 3!! It added to sticker shock and I'm not sure I would go back for special occasion dinners for that reason."

"Enjoyed the ambiance at Akasha. And, ordinarily the food is probably very good. On Thanksgiving, however, I think the food suffered from too many people to feed. The salad was excellent. The bread basket (which arrived only after we asked for it) was cold and dry.
The turkey had that reheated taste, the stuffing was very dry(I left it), the mashed potatoes were watery (I left them), the brussel sprouts were good and the broccoli was very good. The pie buffet was a nice touch, and the pies were good, but not exceptional. I was disappointed, but would try the restaurant again on a regular night. All in all, Thanksgiving dinner at Akasha was mediocre and overpriced."

"Meals were excellent for all four of us. Our server(Megan)was outstanding. Her comments on the menu and her recommendations were spot on. She was very pleasant and knowledgeable, yet very professional at the same time. Atmosphere was excellent, with good spacing between tables."

"Ridiculous high prices for interesting, spicy, tiny servings. Will never return to the scene of the crime.
Obnoxious how some people remain in business and can actually pull this off. The Emperor's New Clothes!!!!
Smaller, less popular restaurants are not doing as well and that is too bad because in many cases their food
is better and their servings and pricing are fair."
