Since 1980, Anton & Michel has consistently maintained an award-winning reputation for true excellence in the art of fine dining. Stylish, elegant decor and a breathtaking view of the verdant "Court of the Fountains" harmonize to create a serene and romantically intimate retreat within relaxed, modern surroundings. At this venerable establishment casual elegance, modern charm with old world tradition coalesce. Zagat Survey extolls it as “Carmel’s long-standing paean to graciousness in dining out … well-trained staff treat you like royalty … patrons make a special trip for the tableside service and spectacular flambé desserts. As quoted in the Wine Spectator, Anton & Michel is “probably the best dining experience in downtown Carmel-by-the-Sea”.
"Start with the fantastic Spring Roll appetizer, but don't expect the entrees to be as good. The Kobe Beef Short Rib (boneless) had not had been trimmed, so each bite was very fatty. The Tiger Prawns & Diver Scallops Fricassée was the reason we chose this restaurant. The crab ravioli were hot, but the diver scallops and tiger prawns on top were room temperature. The sauce on this dish was so salty that I ended up scraping it off. Disappointing as I had requested no salt or pepper on my meal. If the chef could make such an excellent appetizer, why were the entrees not up to Anton & Michel's usual quality? We had an early reservation and the dining room was not at all crowded at the time we ate."

"The food and its preparation were both interesting and very good. The quality that sets this restaurant above the others is its staff. They understand how to add to the evening without being intrusive. Their knowledge of the menu, preparations and wine pairings made for an outstanding meal."

"Old-fashioned traditions of table-side service live on at A & M. Food was adequate but nothing to rave about. Probably would have done well to have their rack of lamb speciality. Looked like they are old-hand pros at presenting the food."

"Very good food in a nice ambient. All the people around was a bit older than us so we can't say was "vibrant" but no complains about food and service. Maybe don't go for the house wine by glass."

"What a wonderful find from our stop over at Monterrey Hyatt Regency - Anton & Michel was recommended by our concierge. Carmel is absolutely gorgeous we stroll around before dinner. Anton & Michel is a classy European style establishment. Our server Rene was extremely personal and professional as was all the restaurant staff. Now the food - ahi tuna, steak, fine local wines, dessert........all was perfection for a romantic, happy and fun evening in Carmel. I will return to dine here on our next Carmel visit! Bravo!"

"We are regular traveler's to Carmel for over 35 years and have enjoyed many fine dining experiences from Big Sur to the Highlands and throughout Carmel, Pebble Beach, and Monterey but somehow we missed this gem until now. Anton and Michele may now be our favorite, at least in Carmel. They offer a broad menu and great wine list at somewhat expensive prices, but nonetheless quite restrained compared to the pricing of some of their worthy competitors. Outstanding ingredients were prepared perfectly. Our server was friendly, accommodating, and very attentive. A selection of flamed deserts was the perfect finish. Check this place out! We will certainly be back."

"Not a foodie trendy place, more of an old classic restaurant offering classic food including some prepration right at your table side (who does that anymore) including flamming desserts. I look forward to my next visit and would definately suggest it to friends."

"We were looking for a special evening to celebrate our 25th anniversary. Things went downhill quickly when my wife's wine glass arrived with someone else's lipstick on it. Rather than get a new glass, the waitress simply wiped it off with a towel & returned. Our food arrived overcooked. We did not send anything back because once the food arrived, our waitress disappeared & was clearly more interested in the larger party ( and larger tip) across the room. We were hungry so we ate anyway. We had our dessert, which was the highlight of the evening & left-- extremely disappointed."

"We ate at A&M on a Sunday night so the atmosphere was quieter than a Friday or Saturday---much to our delight. We had a window table overlooking the fountain/courtyard. Sevice was excellent. Wine list outstanding! My husband had the Lamb Shank Special and I had the Shrimp/Scallop/Crab Ravioli Fricassee. The lamb fell off the bone it was so tender. Mine was very good, but the cream sauce could have used a bit more flavor. Portions are very generous. Oh, and we had the Lobster Bisque--outstanding! The fruity creme brulee was very good, not overly rich.
The decor has been updated, the stonework lovely. Loved looking out the large plate windows as evening approached."

"Very impressed with this little Carmel gem. We were seated and drink order was taken. The drinks came to the table within minutes. The food was exquisite and our servers very proficient and knowledgeable on how the dishes were prepared and served. We finished our meal with Cherries Jubilee, prepared table side, which was also delicious. We will definitely come back, as we make Carmel a yearly trip."

"The service was so outstanding! Even before we arrived! We called to let them know that we were going to be very late, they were able to give us a new reservation on a Saturday night! Very busy place, too! The staff, from the hostess to the bus boy to the amazing waiter! So professional and polite & friendly. The wine list was massive and offered even an excellent split section. Our meals were inventive and extremely flavorful! I had Burramundi (spell?) fish. I loved it! (I did not use the dipping sauce, the fish was tasty on its own). I wish we lived closer, I would go back there tonight!!!"

"My husband and I enjoyed an incredible dinner at Anton and Michel. We started with the abalone, which was incredible. I had the short ribs and my husband had the tournedos - both were fabulous. We finished with the bananas foster which was a flaming treat. I highly recommend this restaurant. We had terrific service and food."

"A great dinner and evening. The early bird menue a great find. What a difference to the horrible dinner we had at 1833 in Montrey. None of the dishes were acceptable but the biggest "shock" was that they charged $4.00 for four thin, small slices of French Bread. We have dined all over the world and NEVER had to pay for regular break. All that for $140.00. Denny's dinner would have been more enjoyed. Great ambiance and wait staff but still, we will never go back and never recommend THAT place. A big disappointment!!!!!!"

"Went to the restaurant for an after Valentine Day Dinner. Its a very romantic place, just finished upgrading the interior, its very nice. The food did not live up to oue expectations,it was good but not the top quality advertised. The service was poor, the waiter was unable or unwilling to take care of more than one table at a time.He would actually bring some dish to a table, never look around to his other 4 tables to see if anything was needed then head off to the kitched to repeat his one his one table service. You wanted to hold up your hand like a school kid to get his attention. The buy boy was much better at assisting us than our waiter. The wine list is large but very over priced we are in the wine industry and know the difference."

"We were quite disappointed with Anton and Michel. From the other reviews, we expected a special experience. What we got was rather lackluster service and food. The soup may companion had was good but the salad I had was rather strange and the flavors didn't really work. Our main courses were OK but nothing special. The sauce on my scallop and Shrimp with ravioli dish overpowered the ingredients. The fish that my companion had was nothing special and was overly salty. Needless to say, we didn't get desert. I also had to ask twice to get more water. There was plenty of staff but they didn't seem to know what they were doing considering the price of the meal. Needless to say, we won't be returning on our next visit to Carmel."

"Probably my favorite place in Carmel for upscale dining. Service from host to busboy was prompt and attentive. The food was excellent and the menu choices varied. I was attending an event at the Suns et Center and staff was attentive to time constraints. All in all, a wonderful dining experience typical of this fine old restaurant."

"We love Anton and Michel. We go every year during the AT&T golf tournament and always enjoy our dinner. It is a beautiful restaurant which was just remodeled and looks fantastic. It is a little less formal and feels more like Carmel - elegant yet a little rustic. The service is always excellent. My husband started with the french onion soup which he always enjoys and I had corn bisque. I had salmon as my entree which was cooked perfectly and my husband had the rack of lamb which was also fantastic. We were too full for dessert but lingered over coffee and closed the restaurant. Even being the last couple there, they didn't rush us which is so nice. I would recommend Anton & Michel to anyone for a special evening out in Carmel."

"Love the recent renovation! It looks fantastic. Love all the glass walls so that we can see through the rooms to the courtyard. Love the ambiance, the extra padding in the carpet certainly helps the acoustics. We could hear each other at the tables. Service was very good. Only suggestion would be - with such a beautiful new decor, you need a new menu. Also, might add two additional entrees. We loved the fact you do not have a lengthy menu - hate pages and pages of menu, but our table did feel you need a couple of more items. We will certainly return again and recommend to many!"

"The overall experience was outstanding with the exception of the deafening level of noise that made table conversation impossible without leaning over the table to hear one's companion. The hostess was absolutely outstanding and extraoridinarily helpful and accommodating, as was our attentive but not intrusive service person Rene. The mushroom soup is a destination dish, as were the tiger prawns and diver's scallops in lobster sauce with lobster ravioli! Duckhorn Goldeneye Pinot Noir is very limited production and epicurean. If only the noise level were conversational."

"Will probably not eat here again. Maybe I just ordered the wrong food, but it made my stomach hurt. The people are great and the newly decorated restaurant is lovely. I went on the first night they were opened since the redecorating. Maybe that had something to do with the quality and taste of the food."
