"Came for brunch after the marathon with a large group including 4 kids. Not only were our runners a 1/2 hour late but 1 of the kids had an epic meltdown. Scala's was great throughout all this, and the food was good to boot."

"Scala's has always been a reliably good placet in Union Sq. to take out-of-towners or for a lively drink and app at the bar. When they recenty changed chefs I was a bit nervous. But I'm delighted to report the food is as good if not better than ever. The portions seem to have gotten bigger which makes it a good value. The waitstaff are casual but know their stuff. I'd highly recommend it."

"Scala's, started by celebrity Chef Donna Scala, is a great venue just off Union Square in the Francis Drake Hotel. Bartender/Server Adrian will keep you happy while your table is prepared and like Adrian, the wait staff is first rate. I highly recommend using OPenTable to get a reservation - weekend waits, although worth it, can be long. Seafood and past are first rate, particularly the Pork Sugo Taliatelli and Donna's signature Ravioli with lemon or mainara."

"We have visited Scala a few times a year for many years. The food has remained consistently good. Our meal was excellent made better by the fantastic service. "Hi - I love Scala's - the location, the food.....but the last few times i have been there the service is slow. Normally not a big deal - I dont want a rushed meal for sure. But going to the theatre close by they dont seem to have any sense of urgency.

"When we made our reservation, we asked for the most quiet table available. Instead, we were seated in a central location, which was extremely LOUD. This made conversation nearly impossible for 4 people (2 on either side of the table) -- one of whom has a hearing deficiency. We won't be back."

"Location is convenient from where I work. The food was great, although it took a while to come, they gave us bread to snack on and the staff was very friendly. What I really liked was that the place looked really nice and although it was just after noon, it was busy but not packed, and you could still carry on a conversation without yelling unlike a lot of other places nearby."

"We had a great meal here on our wedding anniversary. We booked online after seeing online reviews but werent sure what to expect. Im happy to say we were thrilled with the restaurant, the service and the food. We felt comfortable as soon as we arrived, and so pleased we had reserved a table! We prefer a lively atmosphere to stuffy formal dining and Scala's lively ambience was perfect. Drinks and food menus were extensive and impressive. Our meal was superb, and our cocktails were perfect.

I have to also say that we had mentioned our anniversary in our booking. We were given a nice table as requested and specially printed anniversary menu! Our lovely waiter Bruce also treated us to a special dessert. Bruce is a star and was a great host."

"Had dinner @Scala w/ my gf while spending a weekend vacation in San Fran. I ordered the papperdelle and she had the duck confi risotto which was the dinner special. Both meals were fantastic! Also ordered a side of roasted artichoke hearts which were very tasty and made for a tasty breakfast the next morning.

The waitstaff were very attentive in that water was always refilled and plates were brought out quickly, but our waitress needed to be flagged down a few times as she did not come to our table for the first 5 minutes... so we ordered wine/apps/entrees all in one shot figuring we wouldn't see much of her. It didn't detract from our dining experience and all-in-all we had a wonderful time."

"Been here dozens of times over the last few years. The hostess and bartenders were more than fantastic.
Once we finally got our table it became a real mess. Our server was totally overwhelmed and barely keep her composure at times. We finally ordered. I hated having to basically flag/hail her for basic procedures. Maybe I could have made it through the night but the mussels and fries were room temperature, the grits with my duck was barely warm, steak was dry with cold fries, salmon was good and linguine with clams had definitely been sitting for a bit(not hot). Of course Bostini chocolate cream dessert thing was awesome. I've been here many times and this was unacceptable for $350"

"The night we arrived in SF (after 11:30 pm), they were closing. But, one of the servers, Umberto, recommended Bouche on Bush (awesome). We repaid that favor by dining in Umberto's service area and he did not disappoint. Perfect timing and great knowledge of the food and wines that the restaurant had to offer. His recommendation of a Sangiovese was spot on (not a fan of Italian wines). Tasty linguine con vongole. Additionally, the woman that was the maitre'd was wonderful and welcoming. On the other hand, we had to wait a bit for our table and decided to have a couple of cocktails at the bar. The woman bartender was not very friendly, in fact she was surly. That aside, a nice comfort food experience made better by a wonderful server."

"Made arrangements in advance for bday dinner for daughter. Server was nice, but would disappear for long periods of time. Bread basket empty during entire pasta course! Shame!! At end of meal, server brought bday dessert for the celebrant and server just took off- no one from Scala's sang HB!! She never even asked if anyone else wanted dessert. Had to seek out our server to get more dessert. Don't know what happened, but we were quite disappointed with our experience, even though the food was good."

"We often dine at Scala's before attending theater and always inform our server of the time constraints. This time our waiter boldly reassured us, "oh you have time!" in a semi-insulting manner that suggested we really hadn't needed to point this out. When I began to order with the sentence, "We'll start with the fritto misto", he ran off to put that in before I could get another word out of my mouth. We had to flag him down to even complete our order. And in the end, we had no time for dessert or even coffee because the entrees took so long to arrive. Not that he even asked us ...."

"Enjoyed another wonderful meal at the always deliciously reliable Scala's Bistro.
The spinach salad with warm vinaigrette was outstanding and we feasted on the steak frites which we shared and there was plenty of the perfectly crispy frites we hated to leave behind!

"every time, Scala's delivers. So tough to do, but it's always fantastic. So tough to do time and time again, but its always perfect. I don't know how they do it. The flat breads, the house made pastas, the local, sustainable and organic produce, the dessert - the house made breads that nail it every time, the seasonal non alcaholic drinks, my favorite one on the face of the earth is Chocolate Chocolate Chocolate - all the textures and temperatures and chocolately flavors all on one little plate."

"Scala's is a staple whenever we visit SF. Right on Powell Street near Union Square with the action of the City, including cable cars, in full swing outside the entrance. We have always had a great experience. This particular visit was good, but not outstanding. Lentils were undercooked in one meal. Staff made a concerted effort to remedy this by preparing and bringing out another side dish of lentils. We love the ambiance and are always well taken care of at Scalas. We'll definitely go back."

"We had a nice meal at scala however it's not a cheap plate option. Although food was
Great we felt processed. The restaurant was busy with a wait line.
We had 3 courses and coffee served in 1 .15 hours !
The server then brought the check when we were finishing our wine and despite saying - no hurry came back twice in 10 min to see if we had sorted the money yet.
Again not what I expect when the bill for 2 is $180."

"Scala's is a staple in SF. The food is consistently good as is their service. I hadn't been in a while and I couldn't believe the hostess remembered me! I always love the caesar salad with grilled salmon on top, and my friend loves the mussels - we're both creatures of habit. In the past I've tried various other pasta dishes and pizzas and everything is good."

"Convenient to San Francisco's Union Square area, we were looking for a late night dining experience...beyond a diner type. Scala was a great find for this....not very busy at 11:15 pm, but wonderful menu, gracious service, nice ambiance and a very pleasant experience. I would highly recommend it for after a night baseball game or the theater."

"None of the four of us wanted drinks or appetizers. That seemed to evoke a 'disdain' for our presence on the part of our waiter, though our water glasses were constantly filled. I had made reservations for four. At lest three parties were seated ahead of us. I assume they had reservations. This was NOT a site to which I would return."

"We keep coming back to Scala's when in town because it's around the corner from the hotel, but really Anda the wonderful waitperson is the drawcard. The food varies from fair to very good, the service is always outstanding.
This time around we really enjoyed the Rhubarb Tart recommendation from Anda. We'll definitely be back when next in San Francisco."
