"Best service I've ever received! I felt very respected and like a very important client. I felt like my business was greatly appreciated -- not like someone they simply want to get in and out of the door. We got 1 appetizer and 1 small after dinner drink on the house too! I love the way the restaurant is setup with the classy bar when you come in where you can sit and enjoy a drink (or not) while you wait for your table. There's no pressure to go right to your table either if you'd rather enjoy the bar for a bit. I ordered the Lemongrass and Coconut soup and the Duck and my fiancee ordered a Sweet Potato Soup and a seafood medley. We both greatly enjoyed our meals! The chocolate desert is amazing!"

"Selected Spring for special dinner with my wife. Service and ambiance were second to none - including our local 5 star establishments. Tables nicely spaced with backgound music at low volume so as not to over power table conversation.

Food is delicious with fresh, unique ingredients and preparations. Server's recommendations were spot on. My only hesitation is pricing, which was high and portions, too small. One entre consisted of 4 medium (quarter sized?)scallops over greens in a pumpkin broth. Cost was $32 for an apetizer portion. I left hungry which is not acceptable. It would probably cost roughly $100+/person for a 'full meal' and we were not willing to spent that amount. If you do not have this limitation, enjoy!!"

"I went for Valentines Day weekend, 2/12/10, hoping to order off of the regular menu, however to my dismay I was forced to eat a prix fixed meal. I was very dissapointed. I checked the website when I made my reservations, and there was no notice of not offering the regular menu. The food was flavorful, but I wasn't satisfied."

"We went for Valentine's Day dinner which offered only a prix fixe menu. We had the Lobster Risotto (tasty but coulda had a bit more lobster), Foie Gras Gyoza which was very delicious just wished there was more of a foie gras focus. The Pan Seared Bass and Diver Scallop dishes were very good. Dessert course however, was a total misfire. The Hawaiian Chocolate Mousse Cake tasted like it came out of your grocers freezer. The Mousse was actually the white frosting/icing part and not the chocolate cake which was dense and dry. The other dessert Pineapple upside down cake was another dry cake, chopped pineapple, which tasted like canned but not even sweet. It was accompanied by an ice cream I can only describe tasting like Murphy's Oil Floor soap"

"The food was good, not great. For the price, it should have all been perfect. Our entrees were the best part of the meal (seabass and short ribs). The salads were both soggy but the appetizers were good (hamachi and perfectly cooked risotto). We sat at the bar for 10 minutes waiting for our table and weren't asked if we wanted a drink until 2 mins before our table was ready. Our server also didn't come over til about 10 minutes after we were seated to take drink orders. 20 minutes and still no drinks! Also, we were seated by the windows and it was freezing. We can say we tried Spring but probably won't be back anytime soon."

"Went for Valentine's and we were very satisfied with the menu. The choices all sounded fantastic, and we only had trouble choosing between options. The food was extremely tasty and blended many different flavors exceptionally well. Every course was interesting and delicious. The service and ambiance were also near perfect for a romantic evening. "My partner and I had a wonderful dining experience at Spring on Valentine's Day. The food, decorum, and service were wonderful. We had a fantastic waiter named Christo who was superb! He was incredibly attentive and very knowledgeable about the wine. He had a very charming personality. I loved the coconut squash soup and lobster risotto. The ribs and pineapple upside down cake were yummy, too. This was my first time at Spring, and I will definitely be returning!"

"Excellent restaurant! I proposed to my girlfriend here! The food is quite good albiet on the pricier side. The portions were small for the Valentine's Day prix fixe menu; although, we did not leave hungry! I cannot be more appreciative of the excellent staff that made our night truly one to remember!"

"Open Table failed to inform me that the prix fixe menu would be the ONLY thing available on Saturday February 13th. While stating that there was a "prix fixe available" and there was a $25 cancellation fee - Open Table did NOT state in TWO emails that the a la carte menu would not be available. When calling to confirm, the host was kind enough to inform me of this and agreed to a discounted price as I was completely unaware that each of my out of town guests would now be committed to an $80 pre-selected meal. I am quite grateful for the kindess and grace of the host, and we enjoyed a lovely meal. I am unsure if I will use OpenTable again though. This oversight was inexcusable."

"My husband and I celebrated my birthday dinner at Spring which was recommended by my daughter who has written reviews on many restaurants in Chicago. The overall experience and food was very good, but the only unfortunate thing that happened was that my husband had a food twist tie in his salad. He didn't know it was there until he unfortunatley placed it in his mouth. Needless to say, it dampened the rest of my evening there. We live in Rockford, IL and traveled in for the evening. Though I give the restaurant pretty high marks for food, service and ambience, I personally would not return to the restaurant."

"My wife and I went for the Valentine's prix fixe menu. There were 4 courses, with 3 or 4 options for each course. All of mine were good, but my wife was disappointed by almost every course - especially dessert.
Lobster risotto - overcooked lobster.
Salad - overcooked seafood, again.
Short ribs - over-seasoned (salt and/or MSG).
Dessert #1 - dry cake with bitter (poorly paired) stout cream on the side. Sent this back and got dessert #2 - the pineapple upside-down cake This was also dry, but much better.
Service was slow and we didn't get our crackers (bread substitute) until after out first course."

"everything was great EXCEPT the inexplicably loud blaring hip-hop music which started shortly after our early arrival (previously perfectly quiet). It was turned down upon request, then went up again (some other employee working at cross purposes?) and then down again upon request #2. They should consider separate speaker systems for bar and dining areas, because not only was the decibel level too much, that style music doesn't really match the ambience of the room and food.

They did a great job following through on my birthday special request."

"I had a very enjoyable time at Spring! The food was delectable and the Asian touches in both the space and the food were superb! I was also very interested to go into the building as I grew up further north and as the EL train passed the Damen stop, I was always interested in the building and its history. It was exciting to be walking on the original tiles from the baths and to see the same glazed bricks on the walls."

"Had a wonderful meal at Custom house and was excited to try Spring. Unfortunately I was very dissapointed,the food was just fair at best and very over priced.The Appetizers of spicy samon roll was fishy tasting,and the 1 small ravioli with egg yoke was not that great for $13.00,I felt ripped off.After the first course disappointment we decided to keep on the safe side and tried the Skate wing entree, it was very dry and tasteless. we also had the chicken breast which was good.We had a very nice bottle of wine and passed on desserts when we saw the desserts were small. The wait staff was very friendly. As I was leaving another patron was leaving she asked my impression,we both agreed,NotImpressed with food and overpriced we would not return"

"I think the Valentine Special was terribly overpriced for the quality, selection, and service we received. The decor was only lulewarm and the chairs were uncomfortable (they lean back too much). "This was our second time dining at Spring. The food was good, but frankly not that special. The service was friendly and basically competent, but seemed a bit harried with a few mis-steps; somewhat surprising given the relatively low bustle and the fixed menu for the night. Overall, it was nice, but for the price, I expected a bit more "wow" either in terms of the experience or the food (or, ideally, both)."

"I was disappointed. Been looking forward to going to Spring for years, I had heard wonderful things about the restaurant and was excited to sample several recommended items off the menu...but alas...they did the DREADED prix-fixe "Valentines Weekend" menu thing. Boo! Despite being underwhelmed by the menu and a little annoyed the waiter didnt seem to know the wine list at all (I own a wineshop and tried to engage him, but he didnt know much--or didnt care) I put on a brave face and my date and I tried a variety of things. Choices were limited, and boring. Portions were small and ridiculously overpriced. $80pp? Save it, there are too many outstanding restaurants in Chicago serving more creative cuisine at a much better value."

"2nd time at Spring - exceptional service and mostly a treat to the palette. We went for Valentine's Day and had the special prefix menu. The first couple of dishes stood out with originality in presentation, taste and ingredients - Foie Gras dumplings, grilled prawn and shrimp salad, lobster risotto, pumpkin and leak soup. The main course dishes were not that much of a surprise - the scallops were precisely grilled and serves with the usual suspects of vegetables; the braised ribs could not surpass my expectation for ribs, even as skillfully as they were prepared. Of the desert, the passion fruit Panna Cotta had a poor choice of flavors, while the hazelnut espuma on the chocolate mousse was oddly bitter. I would go back on another Groupon."

"it would have been nice if they would have mentioned when i confirmed the reservation that there would only be a prix fixe menu option due to the Valentine's day weekend (I went on the 12th). but that's a minor quibble b/c I do like to get tasting menus.

My main issue was that I didn't enjoy any of the 4 courses. All were fair, but none were noteworthy. The lobster risotto and the prawn salad were bland, the Pacific Bass was dry, and the pineapple upside down cake was uninspired.

My friend had the hamachi, squash soup, beef rib, and chocolate mousse. She enjoyed her dishes, aside from the ribs being oversalted.

This is my 2nd time here. My first meal was MUCH better. After this meal, this will likely be my last."

"i was actually disappointed with this dining experience. i've been here once before and thought it was amazing. but we went for valentine's day which had a fixed menu and we were both disappointed with both the service and the food. $80 for dinnerx2 plus a $50 bottle of wine and we weren't that satisfied...our server was also MIA for most of the meal. but like i said, the first time i went the food was great and so was the service."

"After a good experience at Green Zebra two years ago, I expected great things from Spring. I was very disappointed. Two dishes were extremely oversalted, the skatewing to the point of almost being inedible, (sad, because it was perfectly cooked otherwise, and the vegetables with it were very nice). In addition, after taking our cocktail order and meal order, our server never came back. It would have been nice to have a glass of wine with dinner, right? Apparently that's not a priority there. All that said, the atmosphere and some of the dishes (e.g. the malted sweet potato soup - minus the stale fritters in it), are almost enough to send me back. But it won't be any time soon, especially if I'm paying."

"Spring is a beautiful, cozy little restaurant. The way the tables are sectioned off make you feel as if you and your date have your own little private booth. The waitstaff were very attentive, and decorations were tasteful.

However, the food left something to be desired. I had the scallops and oxtails, while my date had the strip steak. Neither dish had a very strong flavor. Perhaps we ordered the wrong thing, because other items that we were allowed to sample, such as the chocolate tea and some kind of soup, had their own very distinct and delicious tastes. Our ordered dishes, however, did not have very strong flavoring.

Not sure if I would return. If I did, I would order something different."

"Again I've been in Chicago for many years but hadn't been here yet and that was a mistake. We had an early reservation so you never know but there were allot of people already there. "Allow plenty of time to read the menu - you will want to think about the listings and imagine what they might taste like, because there is nothing standard on this menu. Lots of it sounded awfully good, but you'll have to narrow down your choices. The items we selected were good, but I can't say that anything was outstanding or revelatory. You can see that they took a lot of care with the cooking, but it wasn't that exciting, for the price.

"I was so excited for spring from all the good reviews and have been wanting to go for a long time. You can skip this place! The food was bland and boring and over priced. When our waitress came by to ask how our entrees were and I started to say that mine was disappointing she had already moved on the the next table. Very inattentive for the place not being that busy. They only things that were good were the cocktails (over priced at 12.50 each), the surprise bite from the chef, the pork belly and a surprise hot chocolate taste (about a thimble full). Everything else we ordered was awful including the scallops that they are known for. If you are looking for a place to got for an expensive romantic dinner go somewhere else!"

"Spring was excellent! Pretty much every dish we had was wonderful. The top dishes were the pork belly, coconut lemongrass soup, scallops entree and lemon pound cake dessert. The dishes that were lacking a bit were the octopus and spanish-influenced bouillabaisse. They brought shots of surprises during the meal including a soup and hot chocolate at the end which were both delicious. "This is not the same restaurant. We have been going to Spring for many years and always considered it some of the best food in Chicago, but we could not have been more disappointed this past Saturday. The appetizers were good (sashimi and oysters), but the two different soups (lemongrass and sweet potato) were so ridiculously over salted that my husband even sent his back - and we are not ones to do that. At this point, we're considering this an off night for the kitchen and expecting the unbelievable melt in your mouth fish we've always had there. Instead both of our meals (barramundi and sea bass) were overcooked and a bit dry. Dessert was fine, but also not up to past standards. At this point, we're hesitant to give it another chance."

Tartare of Prime Beef-The tartare alone was delicious, add the pho spice & dressing, WOW.

"The seafood selection was great. My husband had their signature scallop dish with oxtail and is was fantastic. I had the atlantic skatewing, which was very good, but a bit on the salty side. "I had a great experience at Spring. Our server was great, and between him and the server assistant and food runners our every need was anticipated. The server was very knowledgable of the menu, he answered all of our questions and made great suggestions. We started with the oysters and crispy pork belly, both were amazing. The disappointing part was they were seated after us yet ordered before us. Even with that taken into account it took around 20 minutes to get our drink order in. I really enjoyed the food but honestly don't know if it was worth the price\service. I doubt I will be coming back. As an architect I found the decor very underwhelming and somewhat reminiscent of something from the 80's."

"We went to celebrate my birthday and had a very nice table in the back of the restaurant, off by ourselves. This was very nice because it got crowded and a bit loud. I loved the ambiance and decor. It was peaceful and understated. The food was quite good, especially the 'Foie Gras Gyoza' which I could have had more of. The Pacific Sea Bass was also quite good. All in all, it was a very nice evening and very enjoyable."

"Spring is certainly a special-occasion place, as its quite expensive ($25-$40 for entrees and $9-$15 for apps). We went on Friday b/c we also had a $75 gift certificate, but still ended up paying close to $160 since we went all out and ordered a bottle of wine, three appetizers, two entress and dessert.

The service is great, food is excellent, but be prepared to pay up."

"Ambiance of the dining room: quiet and serene without feeling you need to whisper. Biz Casual dress - fine. Server: attentive, knowledgeable about the wine. Ordered 4 appetizers: a hameachi, grilled octopus, pork belly dumpling foie gras creme brulee. Pork belly great, octopus okay, the other two, well let's just say I had to sit here and think about what they were. Lemongrass coconut and malted sweet potato soups, both were fragrant and excellent on a cold winter's night. Skatewing was sweet, tender as was the barramundi, the grilled scallops, fine not noteworthy, special was a bouillabaise also fine - but not "special" Desserts - pound cake and sweet nothings, don't bother. Spring was expensive and overall a disappointment."

This time the food was not as good as it has been in the past, however it was still for the most part delicious. I'm guessing the chef was going for Holiday flavors, as a lot of what we ordered had nutmeg in it....some it totally unexpectedly. If you love nutmeg, then it would have been fabulous...if you aren't a huge fan, then it compromised a couple of the dishes....I will still go back though...."

"Overrated by Zagat. It is okay, but at those prices one needs to enjoy all the food, not just some of it. Place looks trendy, but in an untrendy section of North Avenue. "I was a bit underwhelmed!
