Occupying the lower level of iconic George’s at the Cove in the heart of La Jolla overlooking the Pacific coastline, George’s California Modern is an upscale contemporary restaurant featuring the thoughtful and inventive cuisine of acclaimed Executive Chef/Partner Trey Foshee. "One of the best dining experiences we've had in recent memory. The 4-course special was superb. Beautiful and flavorful seasonal vegetables highlight highest-quality proteins. Favorites included the first-course dungeness crab with pea puree and tomato water, the fluke in uni sauce, the second-course raviolini in ramp puree, the smoked fish (I forget which species) collar, and 3-way California lamb--a beautiful lamb chop, unusual lamb belly, and a piece of braised lamb shoilder. The only negative note was the lemon curd dessert (a deconstructed lemon meringue pie)--the curd was rubbery and jelly-like rather than a creamy curd. A minor complaint in an otherwise spectacular meal."

"The food at George's California Modern is exquisite with flavors and presentation. The restaurant is modern and upscale. The scallops & the lamb were by far my favorites. For the appetizer, the "fish Tacos" are uniquely prepared. If you like sashimi, you'll love their "fish tacos". We will be back."

"the CA Modern is only open for brunch/lunch 3 times during the year. This means that they don't normally concern themselves with breakfast things. Nevertheless, the crab omelet was stuffed with very tender shredded crab meat. Arugula salad was excellent with a tasty, light vinaigrette. The 'basket' of baked goods was an attractive, savory selection of three moist muffins. The service was attentive without being intrusive.
If you want to be able to see out the windows to the ocean, don't go in without a reservation - and even a willingness to wait."

"Love the beautiful new decor with regal purple sofas. My husband and I have been coming here monthly for 9 years and George's never has disappointed us. We so look forward to our amazing experience from the moment we walk through the door. I think it's unique to find a restaurant that is always spot on. The service, the food, the ambiance, just wonderful. This time we were here to celebrate my husband's birthday. He sure enjoyed himself and left with a big smile in his heart. "A treasured window seat overlooking the ocean and attentive, knowledgeable service set the right tone. Arriving a bit early, I was quickly and graciously seated. This gave me a chance to explore the options on Chef's testing menu for my two colleagues who clearly did not support Mom's mandate "...to eat all the veggies on your plate". Food allergies also came in to play, so flexing to meet our needs was not simple. After due consideration, we did not get the tasting menu option, but just the willingness to work with my friends speaks to the dynamics of the kitchen. What we did have turned out to be superb: lamb and beef with seafood starters. Gazing around the packed room, we were not alone in being delighted by the fare and the ambience."

"requested a window view and was told first come first serve. When we got to the restaurant there were 2 tables avaialbe, and we were told they can only seat 8 at these tables, (we were a party of 6). One of the party's came and they were seated at the table for 8 and only had 5 in their party, less than ours.....

"This is not the place to go if your looking for a fat and happy meal. That said, the food, although very small portions, tasted incredible and the presentation is impressive. No doubt there are highly skilled chefs preparing the meals. Overall, this is a fantastic romantic dining spot, and if your lucky enough (we were not) to get a window side table overlooking the pacific, consider it a great day. It's expensive but just understand your paying for the whole dining experience, not the meal. I'll go back but this is a once or twice a year thing."

"Second time at George's and it did not disappoint. Love the cocktail menu to start. The fish tacos (which I will not try to describe here, but let's just say that it is more of a "deconstructed" fish taco that does not resemble a regular fish taco at all) were excellent. Had the lamb and the snapper - both fantastic. Ended with the doughnuts for dessert (again won't try to describe exactly what this is here, but very good way to end the meal). And of course, it is hard to beat the views. Will be back again next time in SD."

"My only complaint, we both left feeling a little hungry. We did not order an appetizer, but we each had dessert which was just OK -- nothing special. Everyone made a point of wishing my date a Happy Birthday and the candle and birthday greeting on his dessert plate was a nice touch. Thank you. All things considered we'll be back for special occasions."

"We've been to George's many times but this time wasn't as good as usual. My duck was very chewy and my husbands ribeye entree was very greasy. A steak at $50 should be pretty amazing. Our appetizers were both excellent. Dessert was great too. We will go back but not for a while."

"George's only offers brunch for Mother's day and Easter. This is the first time we have eaten at the California Modern. It was excellent. The sticky buns were to die for! They were so good that we ordered another to share for dessert. The omelette was beautiful with crab and peas with the tendrils and leaves decorating it as well as delicious. We have eaten upstairs on the terrace and in the bar area and have had a fun time but the CA Modern was certainly a surprise Easter Present!"

"I had a reservation for 8.30PM on a Saturday but the table was not ready and not seated until 9.10PM. Aside from that, the evening went quite smooth. We had a pretty big group of 12 people for my birthday so I can understand a small delay but definitely did not expect a 40 minute delay."

"If you find a better restaurant -- cuisine, wine selection, ambience -- in Southern California, let me know. I haven't tasted oysters that compare to these since the Post Ranch Inn 15 years ago. Perfectly grilled sea bass with an original array of tasty vegetables. Cheeses no one else offers. A 1999 Savennieres from the Loire Valley that would be a rare gem in a fine Parisian restaurant. No pretension, no excess, just balanced perfection in each dish. Cost: $128 per person bottom line with tip. Just try to match this in France for 100 Euros. Good luck!"

"When we arrived our table was not ready. They bought us a round of drinks even though we only had to wait 15 minutes - an idea of how great the service is.
The bread basket and salts were outstanding and were refilled without asking. The bread is worth the carbs and is served warm.
Our appetizers were good. The red salad was very good. However, the entrees were the star of the show. I had their tenderloin. The cut was one of the best I have had and the sauce was outstanding. The lamb dish was interesting and very tender as well. Service was kind and attentive. It is a restaurant not to be missed. I will return!!!"

"Everyone who hears about George's KNOWS it's a memorable experience - our instincts were reinforced on a Friday night. The staff at the host stand were gracious with our seating request, our server skilled with attentive service. Each appetizer, entree, glass of wine and dessert we enjoyed were the BEST. The ambiance at sunset, surrounded with happy diners pushed this restaurant experience to the top. Make a reservation. This is the place!"

"If you are vegetarian or vegan, the good news is that they have a vegetarian menu. The bad news is that the chef seems to think bacon drippings are vegan.
The wine list is okay. The radish salad was good. My plate of chino farms vegetables was overpriced, lacked imagination, and tasted strongly of bacon. If it did not seem rude and persnickety at the time (for I did not want to offend my date), I would have asked to speak to the chef."

"George's California Modern (the bottom level of this tri-level restaurant) has an unbeatable view of the La Jolla cove...if you are lucky enough to be seated at the tables facing the window that is. The seating is slightly awkward as there is simply one long, connected seat for multiple tables against the walls. With the tables so close together, you feel as though you're having lunch or dinner with the people next to you. The restaurant definitely has the romantic ambience -- and the price to prove it -- but the close proximity of your neighbors ruins this a bit. The food is usually amazing and unique, albeit with a pretty limited menu. I can't complain at all about the service, as it is always top notch."
